Well folks I have done it again! Another absolutely easy and awesome mod for Dirt Cheap once again!!! Maybe I should change my screen name to DirtCheapDevil! Here it is Color matched side skirts for 13 dollars!!!! and it is exact the pics I will provide may look a tad off but it is the weather here right now. So light wasn't best and the flash from the digi went off! but any ways here we go ... all I used was Duplicolors Flexable Polypropalyne Clear Primer(2 coats)! and then for my car anyways the Royal Blue Metalic from duplicolor! It only took one can of primer and two small cans of Royal Blue Metallic!:D and of coarse you may want to buy some of their clear coat but I already had some so it may cost you guys more like $18 bucks but still!!! It only took me 3 hours from start to finish and washing my car with skirts on and dried!!!

Final product. kinda hard to tell from far cause the BRP is so dark! just squint real good! LOL.
T_REX02 10-28-2001 02:27 PM

They look pretty damn sweet.....good job at being resourceful, if they had a color for the rex in wrb i'd probably take it to them instead of paying the $250 for the factory ones.....keep up the (cheap) work!!:D
DirtDevil 10-28-2001 02:33 PM

well they actually do...

Hey they do make a color that matches the WRB or at least pretty damn close, close enough to not be able to really tell. Duplicolor is the name of the spray paint company that I used to paint my side skirts. they sell them at any Walmart(Sam's Club) K-Mart, etc etc, however the best selections are at Kragen Auto parts,AutoZone,PepBoys. go there and check it out! it is worth the time and money!:p
garface 10-28-2001 09:07 PM

Did you wetsand before you applied clearcoat? Do they have anything that matches Silverthorne? Looks great.

Sweet mod! Questions for you if you don't mind...
1) the Duplicolour Royal Blue Metallic is colour code 95H?
2) how many coats of clearcoat did you use?

Hmm... wonder how this would stand up to the hot/cold cycles associated with a snow belt car?
mtnbkrcr 10-28-2001 10:13 PM

Looks good DirtDevil. Just wondering if you did any sanding before applying the primer? And what grit sand paper, if sanding was done.
Billy: This should be fine in Toronto climate because of the flexible primer.

Mike
Dolphin Overton 10-28-2001 10:20 PM

Post a side view in good light if you can... that looks really good from what I can see!!! Same color as my car too... I must do this!
DirtDevil 10-28-2001 10:39 PM

To all

I am not 100% sure on the paint code because htey don't list it like that but it is so close that it is really hard to tell.

I didn't do any sanding ... I just cleaned off the skirts really well and then layed down two coats of clear flexible primer! and then two or three coats of Royal blue metalic.

They should have a color that matches almost any color of car paint.:D

Thanks for the compliments and when the sun comes out I will get better pics!
NotoriousWRX 10-28-2001 11:02 PM

You can also buy the exact color paint from www.paintscratch.com
IMPREZA GUY 10-28-2001 11:18 PM

HOLY CRAP!!!! did you remove the side skirts before painting???
Billy 10-28-2001 11:32 PM

Thanks for the info Mike. Reason why I asked is because even guys who had their sideskirts painted at professional body shops
have experienced chipping paint.

Maybe they added flex primer in the wrong ratios or maybe not at all?
128d 10-28-2001 11:52 PM

For 18 bucks that a damn good deal. I think I might have to run out to the store and do it myself tomorrow. :D
DirtDevil 10-29-2001 12:09 AM

Yesa I did!

Yea I removed them first then washed them off real good with an old t-shirt then flex primed them and then coated them with royal blue I still want to clear coat them some more cause I only did a real light coat. but even if it does chip over time, I only spent $15 bucks and it was so easy that I can touch up when needed if at all so you figure at 250-300$ from a body shop that can't even garuntee them not to chip as apposed to $15-20 and have the same garuntee I think I'll go for the cheaper route! Now as a reminder to everyone who is going to do this themselfs please learn how to use Spray paint befor hand and just apply quick thin very fast spirts at about 6 inchec away and let it sit a couple of minutes between coats! just go left right spirt spirt motions and you should be good to go with no runs! hell I did mine at midnight! with not much light and look how good they turned out!
thanks again all hope you all like this opportunity! and sorry to any body shops whom business this might hurt but man you guys waaaaayyyy over charge!!!
KillerTHC 10-29-2001 01:51 AM

does anyone know how different Micca Ruby and Sedon Red Pearl are? this is an awesome mod. i guess i can get some and test it on the jacked sideskirt i found :D
ChosenWon 10-29-2001 02:15 AM

That is awesom. I had no idea that they made flexable primer...that worked!

And I will add a little something to this little discusion too. I have a great tip for touch ups or small to medium jobs. To make a long story short, I found a great way to fix bad scratches. The below pic is a collage of my drivers side key hole after the thief with a screw driver and a lousy body guy got done with it, and what I did to fix both. I think something simialr could be used for your idea as well. And it will let you match your paint EXACTLY.

SSJ Char 10-29-2001 02:36 AM

So you didnt apply any topcoats on it? Would it be a good idea to do so?
Dre2932 10-29-2001 03:33 AM

Nice Job.

Looks good. That's going to be my plan for a while. I'm going to paint my body kit with a compressor and some paint from a local paint shop. That will hold me off for about a good 5-6 months until I decide to take it to a body shop and have the whole car repainted. But yours came out great looking. I've done my girl and eyelids and they came out good so I'm going to do the 4 piece's of my body kit, the 22B vents, and the hood scoop too..
JGard 10-29-2001 09:18 AM

just let me know when the paint starts to flake off.

I had a body shop do mine while they were repairing other things, and it wasn't overly expensive to add that work on, so I figured what the hey.

Now the paint it flaking off, right at the top of the skirt, where it meets the body of the car...not only on the side skirts, but also one of my rear spats. Needless to say, I'm pissed.... oh well...
garface 10-29-2001 10:40 AM

Ok, now imagine this. Those turned out amazing, but the great part for everyone is that they would look even better (and I'm guessing totally pro as long as it matches) if you sand the bare plastic, primer, paint, wet sand, clearcoat, and maybe sand again. I'm not to sure about the last sanding, but that sounds about right. Yours has a little texture to it that's probably not noticeable, but it can be taken care of.:D
adeck 10-29-2001 08:26 PM

I picked up the materials to do this mod today. I found a color that matches a little better, Duplicolor's midnight blue pearl, it's only sold in 5oz cans.
Ghomer1 10-29-2001 08:30 PM

Garface, I wonder if the texture of the skirts helps the paint stick any better??? I dont know, maybe what you said would work the best. I'd like to know. I'm gonna do the wheels with duplicolor this weekend and leave the skirts for later.

Garret
Elite421 10-29-2001 09:12 PM

The texture does not Help. A shop i went to said for them to give me any sort of garuntte they would sand off all the texture, put three layers of primer and then paint. This is a great mod. i'll probally do this soon. i'm plaining on getting side skirts sometime down the line and this will hold me over until then. Thanks Dirtdevil !!!
Alex:)
adeck 10-29-2001 10:04 PM

Dirtdevil, did you paint the bottom of your skirts also? I took mine off today to clean them before painting tomorrow and I noticed that the bottoms were pretty chewed up, I was thinking about not painting the whole bottoms just the sides and 1/3 of the bottom.
Bobalouy 10-29-2001 10:34 PM

I sparyed my skirts about a year ago they still look pritty good, just try not to kick them when getting in your car, my passanger side is all beat of from disrespectful friends.

Anthony C.
brewdude 10-29-2001 10:37 PM

Okay, dumb question time: If you get painted side skirts from the factory, how much more durable is that finish going to be, compared to this cool DIY method? And why? (Like, do they use different chemicals, etc. etc.)

- brew
ChosenWon 10-30-2001 12:00 AM

The skirts are made of the same mataerial as the bumpers. I assume they would get the same process and the paint would stick the same way. IE decent, yet THIN paint.
Vigorous 10-30-2001 12:19 AM

You know what would be funny.....if the Duplicolor paint lasted longer than the Factory Subaru Paint!

Did I mention that our paint sux?!
garface 10-30-2001 12:22 AM

Anyone find a silver that matches silverthorne? Do they sell by car make and model? Or do you just have to figure it out?
DirtDevil 10-30-2001 02:08 AM

follow up.

Adeck yes I painted them all around and becarefull I am tellin you that paint does not match like you think!!!!!!!!!! When I bashed in my fender from a rally one fine eening I touched it up with that midnight pearl blue and it looked like a perfect match on the cap but it was waaaayyyyy off. this royal blue metalic is for lack of a better word perfect! it is the closest to blueridge pearl!! I garuntee it!!!!;) I will get better pics asap but I was just at work for 16 hours we got hit with that latest nimda strain of viruses... It was not pretty. especially in a hospital!!!! I love being a network engineer but some times it's stressfull when it is in a place where PC's are the differance between life and death!!:(
mtnbkrcr 10-30-2001 03:05 AM

adeck: Have you sprayed the paint yet, how good does it match? Any photos?
DirtDevil: Did you try any other shades of blue ie: the one adeck is talking about.
DrunkenMonkey 10-30-2001 10:22 AM

which Duplicolor color matches silverthorn? Im thinking of trying this mod hehe..ive wanted those painted for a LONG time...I think it will make the whole car look much lower

DM:)
DirtDevil 10-30-2001 03:56 PM

Iam still waiting for the damn weather here to get some good pics but let me just say that if I look in the door sill next to the side skirt that they are an exact match!!!! the only reason the outside looks a tad oof is probably because of sun fade oor what not. but it is dead on!!!:D I am still soo stoked about this. I must admitt though it does not change the look outside mutch for a BRP car cause it is already so dark. but I imagine a white or silver would make all the diff in the world.! Cheers!!!
ChosenWon 10-30-2001 06:27 PM

I think that I found a great match for the Silverthourne Met. I am working on a project right now and should be finished by tomorrow morning. So far it is a spot on match. I will have complete pics, and a picture album tutorial as well. I might be able to finish it tonight......

I would tell you what the color is but I would feel bad if you went out and bought it and used it and it looked bad, this way I will have pics and you can decide for yourself.
imprez_kyoso 10-31-2001 02:00 AM

How do I remove the side skirt off my car? THANX:)
TaiChih 10-31-2001 02:06 AM

I did this mod with the STM color. I got it from Pepboys, I'll get you the color... It is unfortunately flaking off now after one winter. I would suggest getting it done professionally. Make sure they put a flex agent into the paint. And not to mention sand and prime it properly or the paint won't stick. Just my .02 cents.
adeck 10-31-2001 07:59 AM

I painted mine last night. I must say that royal blue metalic matches BRP the ABSOLUTE best! I used 1 large can of primer about 3 5oz cans of paint and 1 large can of clearcoat. They look great I just hope they hold up, I think I will put mudflaps on for winter to preserve the paint.
Samirr76 10-31-2001 09:10 AM

Theres a Ford silver touch up paint thats almost identical to Platinum Silver Metallic. I forget the paint code, I have it in my glovebox. I think I may just try this scheme out....
TaiChih 10-31-2001 02:07 PM

The color for STM that I used is from Pepboys colr code #8135 FM. made by Plasti-kote in a 6oz. can.:D It is ever so slightly more beige than STM , but it's the closest match I could find.
Thumper23 10-31-2001 09:10 PM

For all you Sedona Red Pearl people out there, Duplicolors cayenne red matches perfectly. This is what I used to paint my brake vents and need I say damn. Happy painting
garface 10-31-2001 09:12 PM

ChosenWon, did you figure out how it matches yet?
Bankheist 12-19-2001 02:48 PM

Mike, did you match Silverthorne yet? I gotta friend who wants that color.
bouse1 12-19-2001 05:32 PM

Has anybody found a match for Aspen White? I have tried several but they are all way off. Thank you!
JC 12-19-2001 07:16 PM

Sounds good, might have to try this myself. I need white too though. :)

The key to having a durable painted skirt and or molding etc....is the preperation and type of paint used. The problem is the side skirts are urethane. If they flex, most regular paints will chip off. Also if you feel them they are rather slippery and so paint doesn't adhere to them that well. The best way to paint them is to give them a nice scuffing with some 300grit sand paper, clean them up real good. And instead of primer(or before primer) use something called an Flexible Adhesion Promoter(3m and bulldog both make it). This will make the paint really stick. The next important thing to having a durable finish is to use a good quality urethane paint with a flex agent added. This stuff isn't cheap but it's alot better. Stuff like plastikote will give a decent finish but it's nowhere in comparison in the durability and will start to flake in no time.

I painted the body kit on my teg with the plastikote. It came out nice, but started to flake in a couple of months. I then did it again with PPG urethane paint and clear. 1 year later the only chip is where I accidentally hit my bumper with my 1 1/2 ton floor jack  oppps The problem with using good paint is that it no longer costs 18$ I got mine from a local auto paint supply shop, enough for the whole kit cost me like 110.

If you are going to DIY I would strongly recommend paintscratch.com. A bit more expensive than Duplicolor - $29 for base color and $15 for clearcoat (12oz spray cans).
However, at your request, they will add a flex agent that will minimize chipping in the long run.

Good luck

Bump!

How's everyone's DIY side skirts holding up?
Anyone have a good match for silverthorne met. yet? (other than paintscratch.com) I'd like to DIY my side skirts...
krave 04-17-2002 02:57 PM

I bought the real ones and sold my sideskirts...I really doubt any of you can match this paint quality

Also, if you are trying to get as exact a match as possible, many body
shop and/or auto paint supply places will custom mix spray cans of paint
to any paint code. Around here it's about $20 Cdn per can. Check the yellow
pages in your area under Automotive Supplies or something along those
lines.

Free Bump for an awesome mod.

Any ideas for 2002 Black?
technix 04-23-2002 11:57 PM

anyone know if i can add more color coat over the clear coat? i tried this but the color came out kinda dark. also its not very shiny either like professionally painted skirts. any tips? i tried very light coats but it takes forever for the color to be right.
suprajay 04-24-2002 08:58 PM

I went to local auto paint shop for '02 black.. $10 for adhesion promotor, $10 for primer, $20 for 16oz paint + $10 flex agent , $15 for clear coat. TTL ~ $70. Local paint shop quote = $100. Not worth the effort.

so how are everyone's painted skirts holding up?

( bouse1, Has anybody found a match for Aspen White? I have tried several but they are all way off. Thank you!)

I painted mine with a color called Alpine White that you can find at wal-mart. It is near perfect except when under flourscent lights. In the daylight it looks great
STI4ME 03-31-2003 02:47 PM

For those of you that has painted your sideskirts, or purchased the OEM painted sideskirt, have you ever thought about getting the Clear-Guard paint protection film? I'd imagine that will really protect your paint very well from chips and passengers accidentally scratching it with high heels etc. May have to buy them in bulk, since they don't pre-cut for the sideskirts. $6.50/ft for a 12" wide film.

Aspen 04-02-2003 04:33 PM

Just found the best clear coat out of a spray can for the DIY'er and I have used many of them in the past.

Duplicolor Wheel Paint - Clear

This clear gives out the most gloss and puts the most amount of clear onto the surface. I have tried it with all the Dupli-color brand spray paints and works quite well. It gives more of a "body shop" clear than your traditional "spray can" clear paints out there.
Dave_MacKinnon 04-02-2003 08:00 PM

Quite a while ago, I decided I wanted my side skirts painted, and as such, I took all the bits to the guy who takes care of all my paint. He warned me that there was a small chance that the paint might chip and come off.

Where, here I am, 2 winters later, and there isn't a single chip. Sure, there are some gouges, just like there are all over the front bumper and other parts of the car, but nothing due to poor painting.

IN fact, I have some new parts that need to be painted, maybe I'll arrange a group-buy on paint... Hmm...

Anyways, you get what you pay for, though those blue skirts did look OK!
