Hey did you guys hear that the USGP will be broadcast in the US on ABC instead of Speedvision?? Part of the regular IRL staff (Bob Jenkins, Jason Priestley) are gonna do it, along with Eddie Cheever (blech!!!) ABC is picking it up, wanting to gauge American interest in F1 with thoughts of giving it more coverage in the future....
J Colman 09-12-2001 03:17 PM

That would be cool

Mika retires, Kimi to McLaren 2002
The West McLaren Mercedes team have finally announced their new driver line-up for the 2002 championship season, confirming speculation that Mika Hakkinen won't be with the Woking outfit next year, instead he will be replaced by rising Sauber driver, Kimi Raikkonen. The young Finn will race alongside David Coulthard next year while Alexander Wurz will retain his role of third driver for the team.

After 11 years in Formula One and two Formula One World Championships Mika Hakkinen will take a break following the end of the current season to allow him to dedicate more time to family life. David Coulthard will commence his seventh season with the intention of improving upon his current second place position in the Formula One World Championship. The team is particularly pleased to announce that it has been able to secure the services of the highly talented 21- year-old Finn, who will be at the wheel of a West McLaren Mercedes for the first time at the start of testing in early January 2002.

"Formula One has been virtually my whole life since I started karting in 1974. The intensity of my career has become increasingly difficult for those around me. Whilst this year has been difficult for me and the team, these experiences have not guided the decision to take this break," Mika remarked. "I asked the team for a break which would be a good way to recharge my batteries and enjoy more time with my wife Erja and my son Hugo. I'm pleased to welcome a fellow Finn to the team and I wish Kimi all the best. However let's not forget that there are three races left for me this year, and I have every intention of going flat out. Of course it might have been easier to retire, but that just isn't a decision I feel ready to take. I know that I will have to work hard to return after my break but I know that I want to return with West McLaren Mercedes."

David Coulthard knew that his position was safe within the team, the Scot stating some time ago that he had re-signed. He understands Mika's reasons for leaving the team and is now looking ahead to racing alongside another flying Finn.

"My contract with the team was agreed a few months ago and I'm looking forward to next year's Championship challenge," the Scot explained. "Mika and myself have been teammates for six years - the longest ever in Formula One and we have worked well and competed hard and I understand his reasons for having a break. Thanks to Mika, I have gained valuable insight into fast Finns, which I'm sure will be useful next year."

Kimi Raikkonen

New member, Kimi Raikkonen is grateful to Peter Sauber and the entire Swiss based team for giving him the chance to prove what he was made of this year. He has picked up several points scoring finishes throughout the season to date and will continue to help them achieve their goal of fourth in the constructors battle in the remaining three events.

"I'm pleased to have achieved several point scoring finishes with the Sauber team after they gave me the chance to show what I could do in Formula One," he said. "I really want to thank Peter for helping me to take the opportunity to drive for West McLaren Mercedes next year. However until then, I will do everything I can to help the Sauber team retaining their fourth place in the Formula One Constructors' World Championship."

Alexander Wurz was hoping to get back into the action next season and is a little disappointed at taking on the role of third driver for a second season. However the Austrian is pleased to be staying with the Mercedes powered outfit.

"Obviously I'm disappointed not to have achieved one of the two principal seats in the team. I understand, however, that I came very close to achieving my goal of racing for West McLaren Mercedes and I'm pleased that the team has recognized my contribution through this year and re-affirmed their commitment to me for the coming season," he said. "It has been made clear that the team will support my career and whilst I will continue to gain valuable experience in such a good organization, they will ensure that I will be ready if a competitive opportunity arises."

"Mika has been a part of the team for nine years and after 159 races, 26 pole positions and 19 race wins, he decided that he wanted a break," added Ron Dennis. "Mika has always done an incredible job for us and now is not the time to be bidding him farewell. Whilst we have had a range of interesting options for 2002 we are very pleased to announce our driver line-up with David, Kimi and Alex. Kimi's outstanding performances in what is only his first year in Formula One have obviously resulted in a lot of attention although from the initial discussions we made it clear that we would only be interested if a solution could be reached with Red Bull Sauber Petronas. We were extremely pleased therefore that partly as a result of Peter Sauber's good relationship with Professor Hubbert of Mercedes-Benz, we have been able to reach a professional conclusion. We are also pleased to continue our relationship with David, who has shown that he can win races and is obviously a strong Championship contender. Alex's loyalty is appreciated by everybody in the team and can ultimately only help in furthering his career."

"Today is a day with mixed emotions. Mercedes-Benz has a great relationship with Mika and he is a valued member of the family and not only because he has won two World Championships with West McLaren Mercedes," added Norbert Haug. "We have a lot of memories together and we want to thank Mika for all he has done for Mercedes-Benz and West McLaren Mercedes. We would like to welcome Kimi to the team who in his first Formula One season impressed all of us very much and we are looking forward to working with him. David, having done a great job for the team for years, will be even stronger next year and I'm sure that Alex will continue to contribute to the team's performance in the efficient way he did this year."

SubEd 09-14-2001 08:24 AM

 at you guys trying to figure how they get the girls into those outfits. I'm always trying to figure how to get them out of them!
donjuan 09-14-2001 08:25 AM

Good point SubEd. I'll do some research on that...
donjuan 09-14-2001 08:26 AM

Ralf won't race in the US??

He said it's unsafe and he will not be taking his family there...
J Colman 09-14-2001 08:46 AM

Ralf needs to relax a little, I'm sure they will all be on chartered planes or private jets.

I cant believe Mika is retiring and Kimi is taking his place. Kimi must have really impressed everyone with his performance this year, amazing.

I think that next year will be another Schumi year though. I think that Williams will have another year of getting some of the final bugs out, but they will be more competative. McLaren could be good, but without Mika there chances are slim. I say this because Kimi is too young and doesn't have enough experience to take it to schumi for the whole season, and we all know what DC does in high pressure situations (Donjuan, do you want to do the honours with the picture).

hahahahahahahaa

Always a classic, make sure you have that baby handy for next year, and of course a steady supply of tard faces at the ready
donjuan 09-14-2001 09:05 AM

Haha...yep that's a good one.

Plenty of action left this year though (well, maybe). Ralf and Chili Dog on top of practice this morning. That is a good sign, because Williams has made VAST improvements between Friday practice and qualifying in nearly every race this year. I wanna see them dominate and bump McLaren...

Williams 1-2!!!!
J Colman 09-14-2001 10:00 AM

Then Indy, they could do very well in the last couple of races.

Old chili dog doesn't look like he cares too much in that last one
johnfelstead 09-14-2001 06:58 PM

chilli dog looks fine to me Justin.

donjuan, thanks for that choker, i need a giggle right now.
OnTheGas 09-14-2001 09:42 PM

McLaren

I'd like to see McLaren and MB step it back up, as we could then see next season three teams roll out each race weekend who are each just as likely as the other to be on the podium...

It would make for more furrowed brows and nasty rivalries all season long! :)

Montoya will win!
johnfelstead 09-15-2001 12:46 PM

surprised me with that one Fred, NOT!
SpinAll4 09-15-2001 02:56 PM

Sam Posey said something very interesting.

I watched friday practice last nite, and i heard something so awesome and so hilarious I cant believe I am the first to post about it. I didn't tape the broadcast so you'll have to excuse my memory, but it went a little like this...

Varsha: "It will be interesting to see what DC does next year beeing the #1 guy at Mclaren, and having a new, unexperienced teammate"

Posey:"It'll be the end of him."

Varsha:"the end of COulthard?"

Posey:"Yes, Kimi will come in there and rip him up."

Posey went on to say various things about Dank Crud, like-- he's always been a #2, and how Kimi is the real deal and will have no trouble showing it.
If any one has this program taped i'd love to have a dub. It was so amazingly funny to hear.

PS- JPM put down the big smack in quyalifying this mornin'
He will win tomorrow, easy
johnfelstead 09-15-2001 03:30 PM

Michael will win, the BMW's will blow up. Either that or they will be down big style on power as they run higher revs in qualifying.

Sam Posey, i have a great tape called "the speed merchants" from the 1972 WSC. Sam was talking about his plans for the race, very funny guy. :)

DC is a waste of space. I kicked his ass in a kart race when i raced him in 1995. He is a whining sod too and a bad loser. The race was just a giggle to raise money for charity. I won, he came second. He wouldnt shake my hand. tosser.

I raced that day against Jackie and Paul Stewart, Johnny Herbert and Damon Hill and they were all fantastic, DC was a twonk.
Strepto 09-16-2001 09:36 AM

GO CHILIDOG!

congratulations to JPM on his first victory in F1! :D
johnfelstead 09-16-2001 09:40 AM

Told you the McLarens would blow up. ;)

1 out of 15 aint so bad is it? ;)

Nice one chilli dog. :D
meebs 09-16-2001 10:37 AM

it almost rained...

... but just over JPM's car thanks to Posey. :) 4 laps to go and he starts making the usual, "not to jinx him but..." comments. Arrgg Sam you're killing me!

Juan is a fairly short man, about 5' 6" but fairly stout perhaps even 'hefty' for his size. This year when he innitially joined Williams as a driver it was suggested to him that he loose some weight by team manager Patrick Head. My best guess is that on this board speculation on his new found weight was at one point attributed to his love for American "Chilli Dogs" that he has been consuming over the last couple of years...
Fred Zaplitny 09-16-2001 11:19 PM

John, it was only speculation by one of our members that he loved chili dogs! I believe it all started in our Monte Carlo thread. The name just sort of stuck in all our threads after that. It's a good nickname, I think.

oh, I almost forgot..........

Montoya won!!!!!!!!! BwaHaHaHa!!!!!

I told you so!

Hey all you Montoya doubters.....How's that crow taste?! :D Kind of like a chili dog?!
J Colman 09-17-2001 08:23 AM

He's an Alesi, 1 hit wonder  ;)
donjuan 09-17-2001 08:27 AM

Hahahaha.

Honestly I'm glad he got the first one out of the way. I think the pressure on him to win right away was the cause of some of the dumbass driving he's done this year. He's settled down a bit and is obviously learning something. As much crap as I give him, I still hope he does well because he's on "my" team :)

But what the hell is up with his funk girl??:

Cant see the pic.

I'm just giving Juan Pabolito a hard time. I'm sure he will win his fair share before his time is up. Nice to see the podium with some fresh faces.

Justin
donjuan 09-17-2001 09:58 AM

Weird, I can see it just fine, even after deleting cookies and such.

I really feel bad for Zanardi. Coming back from retirement, then having such a disappointing season, and then this accident. It's horrible. :( Get well soon Alex.
J Colman 09-17-2001 11:16 AM

Amen to that
