ideas for raised letters on FHI 4 pots? part 2

DieselClown 05-13-2007 04:39 PM

actually...i dont mind doing all this..i just want to get these onmy car LOL. BUt, all i did last night was take off the decals, lightly sanded the whole caliper down so that it was nice and smooth. i was lucky that a majority of the paint still stayed on and I only removed mostof the clear coat. I applied the decal and let it dry overnight and then cleared it in the morning. it came out nice after the second coat, but I waited only about 12 minutes and applied the 3rd coat of clear. Then it began to crinkle again. i was like DOH!! but by a stroke of luck, a piece of dust fell onto the face of the caliper so I went and smudged it off. Then, realizing the clearcoat was still soft, I use my finger and just smeared the entire caliper effectively rubbing down all of the crinkles!! I then blowdried it and the gloss came right back and everything's now PERFECTLY smoooth!!! I'm going to do the same with the suby 2 pots tomorrow night and then install everything this weekend.

One thing I did learn though, is to DEFINITELY bake the paint BEFORE applying any clearcoat.
kenny,

Don't think we've spoken before, but your gold paint job on the converted Nissan calipers is impressive. Nicely done. :)
Thanks, I actually was planning to leave them as-is but needed to grind down the Nissan for clearance on the wheels I just got. I probably should have taken down the "SUMITOMO" entirely as well for improved aesthetics but I got the clearance I needed at that point.

Gotcha.

I think I'll probably stick with saving for the Subaru ones. I guess I'm not that interested in grinding and repainting. *shrug*

But I do appreciate a nice DIY. :D

Here're a few quick pics from my crappy phone. I'm going to buff them out a little with the porter cable this weekend to bring out that shine!!

I'm using the custom designed (by me!! :D ) decals on the bottom to mimick the stoptech look but retaining the SUBARU letters. I'd contemplated using STOPTECH decals there just so it can match the fronts but how cheesy is that since they're SUBARU brakes? I'm so freaking creative I know.

I had some extras printed out in different sizes cuz I know I'll mess them up LOL.

here's the STOPTECH rear decal that I'm mimicking.
nice. can't go wrong with dbas.

i opted to grind down my retrofitted nissan calipers and paint them with duplicolor engine enamel. i used a heavy duty grinding wheel and finished off with a palm sander.

sorry to say mine are still all black- bought some high temp white spray w/ the idea of spraying some in a cup and hand painting the raised letters- little concerned w/ coming out like crap- not wanting to re bead blast, re powder coat, re build the calipers- I should have trimmed off the raised letters before hand and went w/ the decal option :(
