"If it rains in Catalunya, I am going to win," Solberg told Motorsport News. "If it is dry I am going for between third and fifth."
"I'm still feeling so good after the win in Corsica that I can't wait to start this rally," he continued. "It's often said that anything's possible, and last week we really showed that! I'm feeling comfortable with my driving style in slippery conditions, and on the repeated runs through the stages in Spain, even in the dry, there's a lot of gravel and dirt on the road, so that should help me I think."

its raining here, so it must be raining in Spain right?!?
i think petter will do well either way. the win in france is huge for him, as it was his first tarmac win. its dry he'll do good, if its wet he'll kick ass!!!
The weather forecast for the Catalonia Rally is poor, giving Subaru renewed hope for a tarmac rally in which it might easily struggle.
Some rain is currently forecast for each of the three days of the Catalan event, which starts on Friday. Drivers expect the route to be slippery in any case, because it is concentrated on the roads around Sant Hilari and Vic, and some stretches of road, used in both directions, will figure up to four times; corner cutting will therefore reduce grip still further.
Pirelli's tyres are generally no match for Michelin's on dry asphalt, but damp conditions give its drivers a fighting chance and allowed Petter Solberg to achieve Subaru's first tarmac victory at World Championship level in five years in Corsica.

Yes Petter is awesome. Favorite Driver Subaru has ever had... potential to be the best.
| Big C | 10-23-2003 07:12 AM |
Petter has definitely put some excitement back in the WRC...Its great to a driver with alot of confidence who isn't afraid to say it. Loeb would never do this...He would be more like "uhhhhh if I uhhh drive good then uhhhh we might uhhhh win" Solberg might not be a WRC champion (yet) but IMO he is already far more of a personality/superstar then most past champions will ever be.
We should all do our "rain dance" this weekend to give Petter/Subaru the best chance possible. For me this involves washing the car, it always rains within 12hrs of doing that!

Well it's dry and Petter is in first. Loeb, Sains, Burns and Martin have run. So maybe Subaru's peformance in the dry won't be too bad! Go Petter!

Yeah, but he was only .1 sec up. Times after stage two look a little more realistic for a dry weather rally :(

Well, its looking better for Solberg after SS3 (up to 3rd), but I really feel its a bit rediculious for us to post the standings after each stage :D
In other news, I feel bad for Markko. He's driving with a neck brace this weekend due to his crash in France. His co-driver has said that the g-forces are almost too much for Martin to drive at his limit. :(

| Kilika2k | 10-24-2003 01:21 PM |
Since Petter is in 11th after leg 1, what order will they be running tomorrow? Does the top 10 go in reverse? I'm wondering since all the cars are pulling gravel onto the road when cutting corners which makes it harder for the people who are going later. Hopefully Petter would be one of the first runners tomorrow so he could claw his way back.
And oh yeah, PRAY FOR RAIN!

| X1_SRT | 10-24-2003 02:52 PM |
actually, petter prefers the gravel on the roads. and if its a little wet, even better. the suby is just not a dominating dry tarmac car. but when things get dirty/wet/loose, they really shine!!
-pj

| Kilika2k | 10-24-2003 02:58 PM |
Yeah, but you don't want to be on gravel while your competitors on clean dry tarmac. Its not the gravel that makes the Scoobies faster, its the gravel which slows down its competitors while the Scooby being less affected by it.
| X1_SRT | 10-24-2003 02:59 PM |
very good point. so when it really makes the difference is when the stage is run for the second or third time. this means all the cars will have to deal with the loose conditions.

Running order is the top 15 from leg on running backwards, then 16 to the end.
So Petter will be 5th on the road tomorrow. He gets to spray up the dust (and hopefully standing water) for everyone else.

Sainz, Martin and Leob are going to be pushing each other hard tommarow, so it is very possiable that someone could make a very costly mistake like in Corsica. Loeb seems to have some trouble being fast when it is very wet and Martin might still be feeling a bit reserved after his off in Corsica. I don't exect Sainz to slip up though, he's a cool vet.

Wow...the Subarus are making up some major time after SS19. At this rate, Petter may finish the rally in 4th place if it keeps raining. If it wasn't for the penalty, he would be fighing for second with a chance of winning the rally! Too bad for Richard Burns, his chance for the championship just fizzled up by going off road.
| nKoan | 10-26-2003 04:14 AM |
Yeah, SS19 is amazing. Tommi has a time that looks to be nearly 1 minute up on everybody, except Petter.

Loeb did very well in Australia I think it will be about Petter and Loeb in Rally UK. El Matadore always does well but not well enough to win. What a team for next year with Richard and Petter on the same team. I hope the tire issue gets worked out. Team soobe cant rely on rain to win on asphalt

All Solberg really has to do is finish in front of Loeb and Sainz. Even if he tied on points, he has more wins this season and that would give him the championship. But finishing in front will probably mean winning the rally. Hopefully we don't see team orders with Citreon.

Here we go again!! Chad's observations after watching the telecast.
1. My next set of Rubbers are going to be Pirelli's
2. 600 MILES in transit between stages in Catulunya? WOW holey my back is sore in the Recaro Batman!!
3. Richard is teh suck. I'd almost want Colin at Subaru next year than to deal with his wineyness.
4. On that note, Colin hasnt wrecked a car in a LONG time
5. Lets set up a charity to get Penny's teef fixed.
6. Tell my how Michelin told Richard to choose the wrong tire on leg one??
7. WRC's TV coverage it top class, I'm happy. Rally Radio is off the hook too.
8. If I robbed a bank, I'd want Carlos to be my getaway driver
9. Tommi really drove with passion on SS19
10. Panizzi's eyes are the size of beach balls when driving. Intense.
11. Notice how Carlos tests the corner grip with a little wiggle of the wheel before dumping the car in a corner??
12. Was the RS Ford really that much quicker that the rest?
13. Why can VW help Skoda find power that they need?
14. Holey I need a titanium skid plate!!
And my top observation:
If Carlos or Petter wins the championship, I will be crying happy tears for either one equally!
I will give Petter the nod in Cardiff though.

Agreed. Seeing Petter win, well thats obvious why that would make me happy. But it would also be amazing to see Carlos win, 11 years after his last win. It would really send a message that experience still counts for something in this sport.
And truth be told, I could be quite happy seeing Seb on the top podium spot.

For once, I actually agree with the poll. Solberg is smart enough to play it safe, and he has the advantage over both the Citroens and Peugeot. Barring any technical difficulties, I think he'll take it. And by "take it", I mean the Championship. He'll let Colin win if it means taking 2nd, and the Championship.
