I'm Upset....Please help w/ Headlamp Bulbs
Ok...first, I've been around here long enough and have covered areas of headlights (bulbs)...and before you say "search", been there done that...
I have changed my PIAA's Superwhites twice...the second set actually lasted longer than the first set. But now I have to buy another set...!!!
So...to h*** with PIAA!!! They are good in output but are crappy in longitivity [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/mad.gif[/img]
Since I don't have any real $$$ to spend on HID's and all that stuff...Besides, I'm considering selling my RS.
I've noticed from the search that Hella Optilux Xenon are comparable to the PIAA Superwhites.
Anyone have them??? How reliable are they???
Or is there something similar out there I'm not aware of...bulb wise!
My interest is brighter and longer range NOT how cute the blue looks (i.e. Sylvania Cool Blue)
Please help so I can buy these tomorrow...
Also, where do they sell the cheapest (price wise).
Thanks in advance....![img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img]

I sell PIAA at my shop and have no problem. Are you cleaning the bulbs with DENATURED ALCOHOL? It is a must! Any grease or dirt particles on the bulbs will create excessive heat and cause either a blown bulb or a burn out!

HELLA's i HIGHLY recommend...
I had them on my GT
Catz I have had success with too...

APC suck, i just got some fog light bulbs from APC, and had them in for a day and a half, next thing you know the bulb blows up in my fog light and now my fog looks like crap with all this smoke on the lens and white crap on the reflector, i am very pissed off

How much is a pair of Hella Optilux Xenon cost? How much is a pair of Catz bulbs cost?

I tried posting last night to subpreza's reply but my browser was acting a bit strange...anyway, I wrote a good encyclopedia last night but I'll be brief this morning...First of all, for some $75 bulbs, I don't think we should be cleaning them in the first place....Second, don't you think consumers should be told about this???Well, I'm already disgraced with PIAA...the brightness and range is awesome but the longitivity sucks!!!
Anyway, the bottom line is that I'm thinking about getting the Hella Optilux Xenon, so anyone know where to get the 80W output??? Any suggestions on cheap prices???
Thanks again...

seems Ken has removed them from his web site... as there were some similar complaints as is being said here about PIAA's...
he wont sell 'flakey' products...
try the highest level Hellas or the Yellowstars...those are fantastic as well.

Ken at Susquehanna (the link Jamie posted) dropped the Optilux Xenon due to quality issues. Originally Hella pulled them to work on the Optilux quality. This it took about 6+ months for them to get back on the market. Then new ones Ken got failed so said he wouldn't carry them anymore.
That is what I went through when I was looking for optilux and why you don't see them.

Well, here's the story...Optilux nowhere to be found...nobody carries them anymore...I really liked the Superwhites and looked for comparisons to the Superwhites; because of the brightness especially at night, my search wasn't easy but I finally gave in to the Hiper SuperWhite Xenon Bulbs...through Ebay, but I actually called the company for the 130/100 output....$28.99, not bad compared to $75 for the PIAA's. Well, I guess when they come in this week, I'll give you feedback...They're guaranteed for 1 yr., hopefully I won't have to change them...

If you buy bulbs from a REPUTABLE store, they will tell you how to install and clean your new bulbs. I have very few bulbs return, mainly problems with Civics from excessive heat transfer and bad ground. By the way, there are only six companies that actually make these bulbs. Companies buy the rights to market them. APC, HYPER, and NAXOS are all the same bulb. Until these bulbs are built, shipped, and installed in a true vacuum environment then you will need to clean them. Dust particles will destroy these bulbs. Glass naturally attracts dust. Clean your bulbs.

I had PIAAs on my old truck and they were great but that's not the case on the Scooby.

I have Philip blue vision and after 2 month of use, it's holding up so far. The bulb is not actually no where near blue. it's more like Hella Optilux bulb I used to have.
BTW, Hella Optilux are very poor quality bulbs. I had 3 sets of them and non of the bulbs made it over 1.5 month.
I got the Philips from Autolamps They also have interesting articles about headlights and lamps.
I am quite happy with the philip bulbs so far, although it is not as white/blue as others, it is for sure brighter than stock bulbs.

replying to the original post, but interesting to whoever thinks white bulbs are brighter.

If you want usable lights, not looks, stick with stock, or something like Hella H4+30. Because white color may seem brighter, but can't fool light sensors [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]
even PIAA, according to their test, under performed quite a bit compare to stock.
and others are just simply terrible.
Regarding Hella H4+30... seems to have a bit longer range, even though i can't tell how it is brighter than stock; appearantly other drivers could. I never changed the angle of my reflectors, but now I get flashed by on coming traffics on low beam [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/confused.gif[/img]

Well I don't know what was wrong with their car... I've got a '91 Civic DX hatchback, and when I jumped from the stock lights to PIAA platinums, there was a big difference. Maybe not to the light meter, but being able to see things was nice. The Honda's lights aren't nearly as bad as the Subaru stock lights though.
Now I've got Hella 80/100 H4's in my Subaru and they work admirably.

I bought superwhite EuroLite and they were inexpensive and work well. It's only been about 6 months, but no blowing or anything. I called around and all the distributors said that they no longer sell the 100W ones cause they overheat the wiring harness and blow out much too frequently. I did a quick search for Eurolite, and here's a link: http://www.aieonline.com/4/cat4.htm?298
Incidentally, I only paid $40 Canadian including taxes - that's about $25US. I highly recommend them.

In response to the comparability of stocks vs. whites observed by meters doesn't cut for me...
I have heard so many things about how whites are not bright according to technological observation measures. Honestly, I've done my share of research and to MY naked eye, I can see a difference. There may be a difference between the whites vs. higher wattage bulbs, but the difference is that I can see MUCH better with the whites. Remember, even if you have a higher output wattage with 'yellow' bulbs, the whites still are brighter (seeing much better) even if the wattage is not the same as the higher stock. (i.e 75/65 whites vs. 85/80 stocks). I'm not speaking of what I've heard or read but of what I've seen with my very eyes.
Maybe to a meter, the whites are not brighter but to the naked eye, you can see much better, and the road is clearer.

hmm. I remember reading somewhere that wattage does not equal candlepower. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]
I believe wattage refers to the amount of energy consumed whereas candlepower is the measure of the light output. If that's true, you can have same-wattage bulbs put out different amounts of light. You could also have a higher wattage bulb put out less light than a bulb consuming less energy.
It makes sense. I just haven't noticed it for myself.

I've read that small electrical surges can blow out the bulbs prematurely. I bought a relay kit from www.autobulbdepot.com that is supposed to prevent this. I haven't installed the bulbs or the kit yet but I thought it was good insurance. Relay kit was around $45 and includes two relays and wiring that plugs into existing headlight harness and provides two new female headlight plugs to plug onto the new bulbs. Two ground wires and 1 power wire too hook up. Nice set but with ugly yellow wire harness covering.

My H3 PIAA Superwhites are actually brighter than my Hiper's. But I think it's because of the blue hint, that kinda offsets the vision brightness through the naked eye....oh well....

Hiper's suck
The Hiper Industries' xenon plasma blue's suck big time. If you actually want to see the road, and objects in the road. Light is completely lost in the vegetation on the side of the road, and on newly paved asphalt are even worse!
These bulbs are simply too blue! They are like those Blue Party light bulbs you can buy at wal mart for your household light sockets. I ended up going with the Sylvania Cool Blue cheapo halogens. The light temperature (color) is exactly what I was looking for. White, not blue. I just wish they had a little more distance to them.
I am going to try the Catz or Hella yellow star soon.
If you just drive in the city with street lights, then your headlights look blue if that's all you use your headlights for.

Bulb size question
Do the sizes and design of the bulbs (H1, 9006, etc) have anything the output at all? I'm assuming they dont, but was just curious since a lot of newer light housings seem to use an h7 or something to that effect.

If you are not looking specifically for white/blue bulbs, what I
have done is used H4 bulbs that are sold for snowmobiles. They
come in a variety of wattages (I think that mine are 55/100s) but
I know of people running 100/135s!
Best of all, they last long, and they are cheap.

i don't know about you guys but i have had the PIAA's super plasma's for a year + now and i've only had one blow. it's in the fog lamp. i think most people find that bulbs blow usually more in their fog lamps. the headlights still work fine, i use my highbeams a lot as well. these are a little pricey.. but should last about 1 year.

I think I'm going to give those a shot after I put in some Hella 500's in the fog lamp position. I'm going to see about wiring those with the high beams so they only come on with my high beams, then get some aftermarket fogs and put those in the air dam and wire the stock fog wiring to those new fogs.
If anyone can help me with wiring diagrams or suggestions in wiring the Hella 500's to the high beam wiring, then please let me know!
Thanks

Seowitz, the Hella 500's come in a fog or driving light variation. if you get the driving lght then it will probably have a harness for you to hook up to your high beams .

I have been using my Xenon bulbs for two years now and I LOVE them. They are 55w rated at 7500k. It gives off a really nice white bluish light.

If you're looking for the best bang for the buck bulbs, get some M-Tecs, I have the Goldens in my high beams, the ultra whites are good and they were the only high wattage bulbs not to melt my harnesses.
Price = 1/2 What PIAA and Hella charge
Output = the goldens are amazing for rain and snow
Life = Ran a set in my 97 L for over a year until a rock hit my lense, then in my FXT until the accident and about 4 month running in the TS.
I paid like $20 shipped, so I'm never gonna complain, if they're good enough for some JGTC cars, they're good enough for my car.

Are you like a Motion R vendor? If so this sort of thing is frowned upon.
