Imola Gp, predictions HO!!!
Tis that time again, folks.
Before i lay down the line on who will finish where, I have to put forth a question regarding Willaims/BMW and their race strategy.
Why don't they trim out their cars a little more in the races? I think ( ) that they could benefit by letting their horsepower do the talking a bit more on the faster tracks. I do understand their thinking of using more downforce due to the fact that they have more grunt than the other teams, but, that might be better used for qualifying only. Anyone have some insight on this one?
Now, on to the predictions.
1. Rubens !!! wont qualify in P1, but will kick some arse on the track.
2. Red-Mist_Monty---after punting Mikey off in the first turn, he will charge back to with 10 seconds of Rubio.
3. Ralfie will struggle with bad tires, but be steady and quick enough.
4. Kimi poor kid, didnt know he joined up with a team on the down turn.
5. Dirty Cheese 'Number one status at Mclaren' just aint working out.
6. McNish go Toyota!

It'll be a Ferrari day, unless their engines blow up. Williams will put up a fight to, and the two teams will own the top 4 positions (barring failures). McLaren will own 5th and 6th :(
Just my theory :)
And I agree, you'd think Williams would take out a little downforce for the race so that they could run a little better on the straights. It's hard as hell to pass on the corners, so why not set the cars up for greater straight-line speed? Unless they're just expecting their cars to run away and never have to pass anyone?

well, as much as i want to see this season be a 3-way contest, i think that mclaren are going to be getting bitchslapped by the reliability bug again for most of this year.... that and they are allegedly down on power. that adds up to maybe a race win or two... nothing more than 3rd in the manufacturers championship.
now for predictions..
1)rubens
2)ralf
3)kimi (outpaces dc all weekend)
4)mcnish
5)dc
6)heidfeld
ms and chilidog will be on pole and p2, and will take eachother out in the first 3-4 turns. it will be a blantant racing incident, nobody at fault, but the stewards will penalize juan alone.
other than that, it will be a fairly uneventful race, with the ferrari of rubens winning by ~20 seconds, then ralf ahead of hte rest by another ~20 seconds.
-dave
ps. kimi will tear off his tear off (redundant?) on lap 34 :p

Zee Germans are on top zis veek.
1. Ralf Schumacher
2. Michael Schumacher
3. Nick Heidfeld
4. Heinz-Harald Frentzen :D
5. Arioch
6. Mike Tyson
Chili Dog will suffer AISS failure and ding the car in qualifying, putting up only the 17th best time.
Kimi will qualify behind Chokehard, but overtake him easily. DC then throws it in the weeds.
A crazy Ferrari fan somewhat resembling J Colman will streak on to the track before the race wearing only red paint from head to toe.

I'll make my "money in the bank" predictions later in the week. However, on the subject of Imola, here is a refreshingly honest quotation from MS:
"I would say the BMW-Williams have more top speed," Schumacher continued, "but we have other strong points. One is certainly our aerodynamics and actually, a lack of horsepower can be made up for in other ways such as in a better weight distribution. You have to look at a car as a complete package. For example, we were very close to the Williams in terms of top speed, making up the power difference through the rear wing, which is one of the strongest components in the new Ferrari. But we must remember that we only won the Interlagos race because the opposition did not get the most out of its machinery, whereas we did."
This is about as humble as I've heard him.

What you been smoking?
There have been 3 races so far, in the First Alan was taken out in the first corner. In the second, his first proper race, he got points and in the third he had to pit because of damage to his car after the shuey/chilli dog incident.
For his first 3 races he has done amazingly well, not many people get points in there 2nd race (or first proper race as aus doesn't really count)
Whats with the "always" comment? 3 races man.

What do you mean he has Driver Championship points?

Shows him with 0 points so far this year. He got 7th in Malaysia.
He's always qualified behind Salo. Salo has scored two points for Toyota so far.
Don't get me wrong. I want him to do well too. I just think people are forgetting his teamate.

Give Alan time, he is a bloody good driver, his starts are pretty awesome, think he went from 19th to 9th in a couple of laps in malasia.

Anyway, my predictions.
1) ChilliDog
2) Ralphy
3) Shuey
4) Button
5) Kimi
6) DC
Rubens will stop on lap 21 after running a light first stint, it will be the hydraulic presure in his water bottle that fails, causing terminal dry throut for the excuses syndrome.
Shuey will make a poor start and drop from pole to 3rd and the williams will clear off. Button will have a scrap with Kimi all race. DC will spin and recover after spotting his next model girlfriend prospect in the stands and becoming distracted for a split second. "it was gear selection problems" oficially.
Truly will crash when trying to match Button, Fissi will race well but the Jordan will blow up with 1 lap to go. Sato will pass more people than anyone else but will be re passed on every occasion as he runs wide on exit.
Webber will be 2 seconds a lap faster that yoong and throws away a top 20 finish by throwing a barbie at his first pit stop, still celebrating Australia. The arrows will be there, nuff said. BAR will be crap, Villeneuve will crash on the 30th lap, Panis will stop one lap later in sympathy.

If memory serves, McNish had sixth place in the bag but his wonderful pit crew LOST his right front tire during a pit stop.
I know Toyota is new, nad they are doing a terrific job, but hoiw do you lose a tire? I thouhgt they were all supposed to be Readied by the individual who was putting them on? Simple mistake I guess, that will probably never happen again.
Good luck to McNish-Im pulling for him.

MS is untouchable this race. Chili Dog goes out to teach him a lesson, and almost succeeds, loses a piece of his car on the first lap due to some brushing contact. Rubens thinks he has 3rd buttoned down, but Kimi comes out of nowhere with a last-lap pass and beats him to the finish. DC blows up, then goes to sulk with his pitbabes. Trulli hits Chili's debris 4th lap, blows a tire in the 6th lap mid corner, and is hit by Button who takes out McNish.

Ruebens will lead, but his car will explode less than 20 laps in. DC will suffer a penalty when he tries to pass a Jordan Honda, putting him out of the points. Jaun and Mike will have their first event free race this season. They will stay close together throughout the race, and the victor will be decided in the pits. Mike will lead throughout, but after lightning fast pits, and MS having difficulties with the 2002, JPMwill emerge behind Mike after the final pit stops, and pass him before the checkered flag.

Weather Advantage - Ferrari
Current weather forecasts are saying rain through out Friday and Saturday at Imola, but Sunday it will be cloudy w/o rain... ambient temps will be cool, low 60's Friday & Saturday, mid 60's Sunday...
There are three reasons why Ferrari may be gain an advantage from these weather conditions:

Friday and Saturday wet and/or changing conditions in practice sessions will give an advantage to Ferrari, as they tested the F2002 at Imola for three days in February in dry conditions, while no other teams have tested their current chassis at Imola. It will be difficult for everyone to learn an optimum dry setup, but advantage goes to Ferrari.
Wet qualifying usually produces unusual starting grids, and part of it will be the luck of drivers hitting the course at a drier moment than others. Nonetheless, Ruebens has shone in past wet qualifying sessions, and Michael is a rain-meister... it is likely that red cars will do well in the crap-shoot of a wet qualifying session.
Bridgestone tires are a plus/minus... some folks think that Michelin has better wet weather tires, which may help their runners in qualifying. However, no points are awarded for qualifying, and if the race is run in the cool, dry conditions, many people believe that Bridgestone is better than Michelin in such conditions. I think the advantage to Ferrari would be very slight, as McLaren and Williams should be able to maximize their Michelins and be competitive. The advantage may be greater down the grid and give the advantage to Sauber over Renault, for instance. Still, advantage Ferrari!
AutoWeek is reporting that Honda will have a new motor this weekend. They recently admitted that the '02 motor is less powerful than last year's, although it may be more reliable. The evolution is described as a small but positive development. So if all goes well we should see GF and JV looking competitive.

Weather Or Not...
These three weather guessing sites:

Cool Site Showing Hour By Hour Weather Forecasts (Weather.com)
wunderground.com's Bologna Forecast
weather.yahoo.com's best guess
are predicting a rainy race (or at least 40% chance) on Sunday.
In light of today's practice sessions, a wet race will mean that Ferrari may walk away from the field, and McLaren and Williams may have a very tough dogfight w/any cars riding on B'stones in the wet, in particular Honda-Jordon, Ferrari-Sauber, and Cosworth-Arrows are likely to be stout. Michelin's wets are no bueno... Could be another surprising and unusual race...
EDIT: 2nd tier B'stones teams
In light of today's practice sessions, a wet race will mean that Ferrari may walk away from the field, and McLaren and Williams may have a very tough dogfight w/any cars riding on B'stones in the wet, in particular Honda-Jordon, Ferrari-Sauber, and Cosworth-Arrows are likely to be stout. Michelin's wets are no bueno... Could be another surprising and unusual race...

What happened to you and the Westie?
Rather a large crash is what happened. I was behind a Land Rover Discovery (big ass SUV to you lot) and some gimp passed us, almost having a head on with a car coming the other way. Said gimp cut the SUV up and braked. The guy in the SUV panicked and jumped on the brakes. Being so low down i didnt see the guy cut him up so the first i knew was when i saw this thing getting close rather rapidly.
I jumped on the brakes and tried to steer round it a bit but couldn't stop and went right under the back. As i was to one side, my front left suspension hit his rear right tyre, this dragged my car up and on top of his rear tyre, bit like those F1 launch in the air crashes. This meant i was doing 50MPH with both front wheels 3 feet in the air.
As my car went in and got draged on top of the wheel, it wiped out his rear spring and shock, colapsing the cab down onto my car and crushing the front of the westie.
I think thats a big enough shunt to have in a cig packet thankyou very much indeedy!
The chassis is a write off, as is the body and the left front suspension/corner. It's 50/50 as to if its repaired (basically a new car bar the main running gear) or it's written off. Waiting for an answer from the insurance company. The repair bill is estimated at $14,500 and thats using all my running gear.
As to me, i am very lucky, i have a sore neck, shoulder and left arm and my wrists are sore from the steering wheel being spun on impact, a quick rack and a tiny wheel puts lots of load into them.
I am suposed to be doing an endurance Kart race in 360cc pro karts on sunday against 20 guys from Jordan F1 on a full size international circuit. I am going to give it a go but i doubt i'll last long.

Holy crap John! Sorry about the Westie but damn glad you're still alive and weren't seriously injured.

Thanks Fred, me too. :D
The anoying thing is the guy who caused the crash didnt stop and the SUV driver didnt get his registration number, so it's down to me to pay up. Sucks ass.
Kind of ironic doing the car in like this, it would have been far more acceptable if i stuffed it at the ring or on track somewhere. When i called Westfield about an estimate the 2nd in command told me he was just watching my lap of the ring 2 days before. I hope they repair it but it's not looking great on that front really.
OK, back on topic.
Bridgestone should be stronger now we are in europe. The interesting one for me will be how Renault/McLaren compete against each other. I think Ferrari/Williams will be at the front again.

I got to drive a real Lotus 7 once and it was a blast!

We have those here, but unfortunately, they're actually pretty small compared to the FordZillas and Escalades we have here.

It looks like I got back from the Continent (Germany, to be exact) just in time to make my predictions for Imola. Well, here they are:
1) Michael
2) Chili Dog
3) Ralf
4) Rubens
5) Coulthard
6) Salo
Kimi will slither off as McLaren takes the downforce off in an attempt to keep up w/ the higher horsepower Williams cars. Heidfeld and Button will have a coming together early in the race.
And I will make another trip to Germany so that I can make it to the Nordschliefe (schleife?) which I didn't get to see this time.

Michael had to really work for that pole lap. Rubens almost had him! Good on you rubino!
If it rains it has to be a michael walkover. If its dry then it's going to be a 4 way fight i think, should be fun.
Thanks for the thoughts! I bought a neck brace today to help in the race. The forcast is for rain, i hope it does as that will help me on the steering, i love driving in the rain too, gives me more of an advantage usually. :D
Must remember to set my video!! :D

Anyone notice how bad the F1 mags are doing with respect to DC predictions?
I know there is a serious time lag, but sheesh, they are way off.
Go Kimi, dont get used to seeing Dippy Chimp, he wont be around that much longer.

Jeez, why all the haterid for DC?
What the heck happened to Kimi today? Did they even say what happened during the broadcast? It just seemed like he disappeared during a commercial break and the broadcasters never bothered to fill us in. Neither my girlfriend or I heard anything about why or when he retired...
Oh well, aside from Button sneaking in there, my predictions were right on :)

Man, are we talking whoopass, or what? John Felstead, what happened? Is the F2002 that fast, or were there temperature conditions that made the Michelin tires not as fast as they can be? That was scary. I like Schumacher, Barrichello and Ferrari and all, but man...that was creepy. It was like a machine.

The reason Kimi retired was down to his rear suspension overheating with a suspected exhaust failure. They pulled him for safety reasons because when the carbon fibre suspension overheats it fails catastrophically.
The Ferrari's look like they have a big advantage in terms of change of direction, very impresive. It just looked like it was dialed in to the track beter. It also seems to be very easy on the tyres so they are being consistent through the full run.
Ralf looked very depressed in the post race interview, i think he has realised they have their work cut out.
Chilli Dog had major understeer all race. Aparantly he altered his car after warmup because the Michelin engineers told him his tyres would suffer so he dialed in extra understeer to compensate, only his tyres didnt suffer so he screwed himself! oops.
Dont know if you guys picked it up but the front runners 2 stoped but had a very long first stint for a 2 stoper. I think they did this because of the prediction of rain after half distance and that would have given them a chance to not lose a pit stop. The Only team that didnt do that was Renault and that helped them get 5th for Button because he ran a conventional 2 stoper. Very good drive from Jenson, he beat the McLarens on pace. I dont know why but Truli never seems to perform in the race. He is fast in qualifying but he sucks ass in race situations, especially in the last 1/3. The move Massa pulled on him was classic, i am tired and not concentrating type stuff. Nice move by Masa but he shouldnt have gotten close to pulling that off.
Not a thrilling race really, michael was just unreal in the first stint, very fast. That race made michael the longest serving Ferrari driver in history in terms of races driven, he is already more than twice higher in win numbers than any other Ferrari driver. Considering he went to that team when they were utter crap thats remarkable. I loved the mind games he played with Rubens though, killed me. After Rubens got so close in qualifying in the spare car, Michael comandeered that car as his race car, took it of Rubens. I think thats funny as hell.
As to me, i did the kart race, my team sucked ass ;) but i did OK. I did the 2nd stint and took over when we were 14th and handed the Kart to the next driver in P3. We eventually finished 11th out of 24. I set the 4th fastest lap out of 80 odd drivers so everything still seems to work OK. :D:lol: It was good fun, which was the main thing. I need to find faster team mates though. :D:lol:

I noticed the same thing too... did you see Rubens had fastest lap for about a minute, and seemingly as soon as MS heard about it, he turned around and put an even faster lap on the boards, as if to assert his position in the team.

I did notice the long first stint, which leads to this question:
Why not just do a one-stopper? If Michael had enough fuel in the car to reach half-distance, and was still going that fast, why not top it off and leave him out there?
And indeed, Ralf was looking very glum on the podium. They were outrun, outstrategized, just plain beat. It was really good to see Rubens not only finish one, but finish second.
Poor McNish!
What I'm really curious about, is if Schumacher's claim that the F2002 won't really be good for another couple of races (made after the last race, not this one), WTH!!?? Some of it is mind games, but the way that he just checked out was pretty amazing.
And speaking of amazing, how about that Williams launch control! Wow! Ralf took off like a shot. Rubens lost the game before he could even begin to play it.
Ultimately, I know that there are ebbs and flows over the course of a season, but given Ferrari's reliability record, and the speed of the new car, am I crazy or is this going to be a loooong season for anyone not driving for the Scuderia?

Why not just do a one-stopper? If Michael had enough fuel in the car to reach half-distance, and was still going that fast, why not top it off and leave him out there?
That is a pretty good question. Tire wear is not a problem at Imola, as the surface is very smooth and non-abrasive, so the tire engineers would say, yes tires will have no problem w/a one-stopper strategy...
I'm guessing here, but I believe that if Imola was a nice fat, wide track like Sepang, (the "new, modern" track in Malaysia), then they would one stop. But the current lay-out does not allow easy overtaking. Track passing for position is extremely difficult (which is one reason why Massa's pass of Trulli seemed so fabulous!), and even lapping traffic can be difficult.
Looking at the pitstops strategies of previous GP's at Imola since they put in the chicanes (post '94), the avg lap# for the 1st pitstop was 28.5, (out of 62 laps total), and the 2nd stop is around lap 45. Every winner, and most everyone who stood on the podium used a similar 2 stop strategy of stopping at or near the 1/2 way distance, then racing a quarter race distance and stopping again, and finish out the last 1/4 race distance.
The exception is notable, and I think it illustrates well the danger of a 1 stop strategy at Imola. In 1999 Mika lead from the pole, running easily away from DC who was followed by Michael. But Mika uncharecteristically spun on lap 17, giving DC the lead. Michael then reeled in DC, till he was within a few seconds, and at lap 31 Michael pitted (same lap as this year, btw). Afterward, DC did his one and only pit stop on lap 35, and rolled out of the pits in 2nd position. However, since he was on a 1 stop, he only needed to stay within a certain distance of Michael, so that when Michael came in for his 2nd stop, DC would pass Michael while he was in the pits, and win the race. But after his pitstop, DC had a very difficult time w/lapped traffic. His laptimes were atrocious as he tried to lap cars while being fat w/fuel. In comparison, Michael came out and had minimal interuption in his laptimes while lapping traffic. (I realize that other factors maybe involved, such as a shiny red car in the mirrors being more visible, etc.). We saw today that lapping traffic at Imola requires a fairly high amount of cooperation from the other driver, as illustrated by a relatively slow Irvine successfully balking Rubens for half dozen turns. Being significantly faster makes it easier to muscle reluctant lapped drivers aside.
Consequently, Michael came out of his 2nd stop still retaining the lead. He won the race, although McLaren should of/could of had at least a victory, if not the 1-2, if both DC and Mika were on the 2 stop strategy. There is a good graph illustrating how these 1999 Imola strategies played out at http://www.forix.com/asp/gp.asp?z=0&k=0&l=0&r=9903&c=7. Notice the large variance in DC's laptimes after his stop, vs. the mostly rapid and smooth acceleration in laptimes for Michael.

Notice the large variance in DC's laptimes after his stop, vs. the mostly rapid and smooth acceleration in laptimes for Michael.
Ultimately, I know that there are ebbs and flows over the course of a season, but given Ferrari's reliability record, and the speed of the new car, am I crazy or is this going to be a loooong season for anyone not driving for the Scuderia?
You're not crazy... That F2002 chassis works very well. Those B'stones did very well in the cooler European ambient temps... I, too, am seeing a long summer for those fighting the boys in red...

Kinda boring race/
I hope the Ferrari dominance was down to mostly tire superiority, not every race will be hot for those Michelins. Otherwise, it could be an extra boring season.
I think all the circuits should install heating and cooling systems to the tracks, so every race can be run on the exact same temperature. ;) :p
Way to go Button. Wonderful racing.
When is Ferrari going to bust out with that trick transmission?
Should Williams be extra scared of that?
Peace

Williams does have excellent Launch Control but if you compare last years races to the three starts the F2002 has made, I think you'll notice a big improvement on the new Ferrari.
As for giving DC a hard time, he is the quintessential underachiever. The guy has spent his entire career in the the best cars yet has never made a serious run at the championship. Now he is getting matched by a 21 year old sophomore with no experience on the team.
DC seems like a real nice guy. Apparently that is not what succeeds in F1.
PS, I'm really happy for JB. Everyone was so quick to kick dirt on the guy last year, but his troubles we clearly (to me at least) car related. I'm glad his looking good, and Renault may be the place to be if past performance is any indication.
Poor Fisichella. He has Jean Alesi-like talent, but unfortunately he is making Alesi-like career decisions too :( . Imagine leaving Jordan just when they get good, then after wasting prime years on a struggeling Benneton, he leaves them and they turn it around! He must be kicking himself!

Well, that's one thing to say that DC hasn't met expectations (which I'd agree with), but calling him "Dorky Chowderhead" and "Dippy Chimp" seem a bit extreme. Aside from whining a bit too much after Monaco last year, it seems like there's no reason for name calling.
*shrug* Oh well... hopefully McLaren can get their act together and get their cars closer to the front of the grid. With how close Kimi and DC's times have been for the most part, I think it's safe to say that they're getting all they can from the car.
