In the USA: how do you watch WRC? part 1

chimchimm5 10-25-2006 02:58 AM

In the USA: how do you watch WRC?
What kind of options do I have to watch WRC in the USA?

No channels carry it around here.

I'm thinking about subscribing to the WRC site for 39.99 pounds cuz I don't know how else to see footage.
andypress 10-25-2006 05:13 AM

You can find the episodes all over the net, just have to look.
bitterWRX 10-25-2006 06:10 AM

I download mine from the internet. They usually come out a week or so after the race itself but I don't mind the wait. Better than not watching it.
SPOOLN STI 10-25-2006 08:24 AM

Speed channel and some of the special ESPN channels usually have it. Oh also the Outdoor channel sometimes has a few events.

Years past they did carry it, but not this year. There is no US coverage of WRC this year.

Download the European coverage off the web or bit torrent.

yup speedchannel cut it...

A guy my gf works for accually wrote them on the issue and they plainly said there is not enough fanbase for WRC in america and they had other shows with much higher ratings to put it its slots.

I do, I have a super secret source. Not really, I just download them from http://www.rally703.com/ as well. Speaking of, I have to remember to finish up watching the Turkey coverage tonight...
nKoan 10-25-2006 01:51 PM

I don't anymore. If it was on TV again, I'd watch it, but lately I've become more enthralled with road racing anyway.
Splash 10-25-2006 02:20 PM

Speed might have had a fanbase for WRC if it didn't show it SUNDAY NIGHT at 11PM....

(DUH)

How about we forego just ONE Barret Jackson episode for WRC...

I download torrent. Usually delay about 6 hrs.
RBelcher00 10-25-2006 11:14 PM

Torrent!

I've DLed the whole season so far!
I have so much footage that I'm behind.
rallymaniac 10-25-2006 11:50 PM

to be honest i don't care if it comes back on SpeedTv. Their coverage was garbage anyway.
I'd rather watch Eurosport coverage downloaded few days later on my PC whenever i want than wait 'till almost midnigt to see Speed crap with poor Bob Marsha commentary

Oh no!!! I'm so behind being that I work in Iraq. Excuse the dated info. I do see alot of coverage big time in Europe. I'm sure of that. It's always soccer (football), F1, MotoGP and WRC. Not too bad when I visit but, soccer gets worn out.
Kostamojen 10-26-2006 03:12 AM

It's official. "Falconing" has become a meme.
blue blurr 02-04-2008 08:57 PM

I don't think it has anything to do with making more room on the network for shows such as Barret Jackson, or racing like NASCAR. It was a contract dispute, or lack there of with EuroSport. Which is the network that films, and originally broadcast the event. However, they show clips on Speed News which means they still have access to at least some of the footage...

As far as watching it here, there used to be a great site but think the person no longer uploads it to their site :( http://www.corriewolfe.com/Movies/
buster 02-04-2008 11:20 PM

Speed Channel is the devil.
I have stopped watching it entirely as I have been rarley been able to find a redeeming show or motorsport on there.
Sheehan 02-04-2008 11:29 PM

There's a forum out there that has a giant 'registered members only' "WRC 2008 video mega thread" or something.

I've heard it also has WRC 2007 and Top Gear as well! :D

OBShahn 02-05-2008 10:08 AM
yep for the speed channel unique whips is more important than WRC :furious:
A whole season of unique whips probably costs less to make and air than one WRC broadcast. Probably has more to do with no WRC than anything else...

By all means hate on SPEED but the reason there is no WRC on TV in the US like it used to be isn't because of the networks but because ISC/NorthOne want so much freaking money.

I guess Koni Challenge coverage doesn't count.

Or American LeMans.

Or Redline TV with rallycross, rally, time attack, and almost zero BS "mad tyte tunerz yo" crap, hosted by Tanner Foust.

Or DTM.

Or Australian V8 Supercars series.

Or SCCA Runoffs.

Or Mazda MX-5 Cup.

but how many of those are shown during the season, day of the race? the last 4 are shown at the end of the year when there is no NASCAR to show. Granted, it makes my wait for F1 and WRC easier to bare, I don't really consider that as acceptable replacement. I usually end up downloading DTM and Aussie V8 during the season via bittorrent along with WRC, instead of waiting for december for SPEED to air it.

The only redeeming factor SPEED has is Formula1. And for those complaining about the 11 PM air time WRC, try waking up at 6 in the morning on sunday for F1. I assure you its harder, but SPEED still airs it. So the airtime is not the problem with the fanbase, which in turn is not the reason for it not being on SPEED. Its all about the cost.
RichardM 02-05-2008 03:46 PM

Why Speed shows lawn mower racing instead of good stuff like rally is simple. It is a sad but true fact that more people watch lawn mower racing than watch rally.

You exaggerate.

This discussion has been beat to death about 200 times, but I remember when Speed Chanel, not SPEED, used to show racing too. And it used to be you could turn it on during the evening or prime time even and be able to watch this type of racing. Even if it were re-runs.

Now it's like this:

Jay911 02-06-2008 01:57 AM

SPEED has a cadre of apologists on their forums who will make excuses for every stupid decision that SPEED makes. The latest excuse is that SPEED, with the power of the FOX conglomerate behind it, couldn't afford the US/NA distribution rights for WRC for 2007 (and presumably 2008). Never mind that a regional cable provider in the midwest managed to pick partial coverage up for 2007, or that Eurosport in the EU been able to afford it all along.

SPEED has a definite abhorrence to anything that might involve taking a risk when it comes to viewers. They will gladly dump total crap on the public - programs that outright insult the viewer and appear to the lowest common denominator for the least possible cost. Anything that requires an expenditure or a fan base, or isn't guaranteed to give them an easy return, is not worth checking out.

V8 Supercars is aired in January each year in a rudely butchered format. All races including the 1000 kilometer Bathurst marathon are cut up to fit in an hour US TV format. DTM suffers the same fate. As someone else said, it's put off until the time of year when no NASCAR racing is going on. Instead, during the racing season, we get dozens of reruns of the dreck programming that FOX/SPEED thinks is what the average viewer wants to see. They have one or two acceptable shows - like SETUP, returning this year, where amateur racers compete with identical (baseline) cars to eventually get a ride with Pontiac. However, easily three-quarters of SPEED's broadcast day is rubbish.

As for where to watch WRC, there are people who get out HQ torrents of the half-hour Eurosport coverage that caps each day of an event, generally within 12 hours of the airing on Eurosport. Racing torrent sites have them aplenty.

Rocky Mountains, not mid west.

And just a point, but I believe the argument is that the WRC generates less revenue than say a rerun of unique whips. Not that SPEED can't afford it, but that it costs too much and returns too little for it to make sense.

Other countries have networks that provide the feed because they are able to generate sufficient revenue to make it worthwhile. And in a lot of countries WRC coverage is going to cable instead of over the air network TV because of the deteriorating Revenue:Cost ratio for WRC programming...
