Installing a sparco steering weel in 06 sti

After numerous searches trying to figure out what I needed to expect with this installation I went ahead and started...
Needless to say alot was discovered in the process...
So, I started easily...Seems the new sti does not use tamper proof torques anymore for the steering wheel airbag. Nice, so I took a t-30 torques to the 2 screw (1 on each side) and dismantles the airbag.
Next I took a 17mm deep socket and removed the steering wheel center nut.
Now the fun part, to avoid use of a puller (lazy because I do have the puller) I tapped the steering wheel gently on various location to dislodge it.
Now, the weel is off, lets get to work on the clock spring...
I removed the 1 screw on the bottom of the column cover and slide the lower column cover off and then the 2 on the bottom of the column that hold the upper column cover off and slide that off towards the driver side (what a pain, not much room)
Now I removed the lower dash on teh driver side and the little metal plate under the igniton to get all the clock spring wires out and removed the 4 screws for the clock spring...
OK, all smooth so far right.
Now, I quickly install the wheel and woo hoo, 15 minutes and my sparco wheel is in...
Started the car and wait a sec, dccd open mode light flashing WTF!!
Well, turns out the culpret is on the back side of the clock spring...

I caled 3 subie dealers and no explanation except that its the first they heard of this issue and may be some new component for the dccd in the 06 cars...
Great...
So.. not being one to give up I start hacking...
Remove the drive cp from the clock spring for this "new piece" and destry the clock spring as a result by dropping it and it coming apart (now in the gabage) and cut off the tabs used to screw the clock spring onto the steering column (img 2)

Screwed the tabs onto the new DCCD thingamabob

and reinstall this back into the car. Now I need to get the cup that allows this thingamabob to turn with the steering wheel a the same time...
How about some putty, mix it up and it bonds any 2 materials...

Sweet, now put the adapter hub in the car

And while I was at it I also changed the ignition keyhole to red lighting...;)

All done...Saved a additional 2.5lbs to make up for the additional weight of the utec and got a nice steering wheel to hold as well.

lol ya they do and what years of crash testing have yielded false results as to the usefulness of airbags? meh. costs money to remove a vital safety feature = teh no go.
| Lachlan | 04-24-2006 03:58 PM |
There are plenty of cars on the road that came from the factory with no airbags. They do increase your chances of not getting an injury by a certain small percentage (somewhere in the 15-30% range, I don't remember) but if they were really "life saving" devices the DOT would require older cars to be retrofitted with them, I'm sure.
| jetfan8178 | 04-24-2006 04:00 PM |
njskatchmo : Thats what seatbelts are for, and thats why I have 3" harnesses also BTW... Plus, Im a big guy, and I prefer to NOT have the airbag in front of me. I will leave the passenger one because I cant choose for someone in my car next to me whether or not its a good idea to have a airbag, but considering I let NOONE drive my car, and I would rather not have a airbag in front of me, Ill stick with the Sparco wheel for now...
joecerv : None, but I have a very nice part in front of me to look at every day when I drive my car...So I gained just as much with this as I would with a battery tie down, or a different set of speakers or maybe even a dead pedal...I gained something I wanted in my car.

I agree with customizing your car to your liking, but when it comes to removing safety items, that is where I draw the line, and I personally will never do, although it is a nice steering wheel. The more I read your statement about your harness, I can see you are someone who considers safety very important and I was not at all trashing your mod, It was more of a concern in case of an accident.
So, are we cool ?.

| jetfan8178 | 04-24-2006 05:32 PM |
Not a problem, I can see how some people dont want to remove any safety items, but I consider certain things to be nessesary and certain ones not nessesary. There are alot of tings that are required in the US due to cras test data and any that are simply added to make the public think it makes a car safe. Airbags for instance have become one of them in my opinion...
Just as a supercar has alot of vents and spoilers to show its exotic prowess a standard family car seems to be judged nowadays by how many airbags it has...
Front, side, rear, curtain and blah blah...I prefer to make the structure stronger and more resistent. Hence strut bars, lower arm bars, fender braces and eventually a cage.

Good write up and the wheel looks nice.
I need to get one of these soon. I find my hands slipping off the wheel at autoxs too often, especially when its really hot out.
PS weee I want to get burned by an exploding air bag right next to my face. Sorry had to add that. :p

Did you check with your insurance carrier about removing the airbag? you might have just voided your coverage if you get into an accident. Other then that good write up and hope you enjoy the new toy.

+12345 for no airbags. much safer without one as long as you wear your seatbelt.
| LDeibert | 04-25-2006 02:03 AM |
I have heard of countless incidents, and also witnessed many incidents where in low speed accidents the air bag actually injured the occupants.. And seriously why is it inevitable that someone will always post their bull**** palaver about safety in threads like this... Seriously its not your life to decide or comment on, its his own safety not yours.

Nice install.
Just as a .02 on the airbag thing. My '87 Grand National dosn't have bags and I know of alot of GN wrecks where everyone walked away. My mom owns a 1998 Hummer and it dosn't have bags, neither do the '06s. I know of quite a few Hummer accidents and don't know of any fatalities (military not included). My 1993 Olds has a pre SRS air bag and I am scared of that thing.
Air bags are a safety tool, like the HANS. Millions of people have survived wrecks without them. Millions have also been saved because of them. They are not required to survive a wreck.
I have also been in two major accidents in '02+ WRXs where the bags didn't go off and I am here to talk about it, injury free. Other aspects of the car saved my butt.

About the horn... I haven't YET replaced my steering wheel, but I removed the cruise control and that disabled the horn... so I figured out which wire it was... it's a green wire... and I took a "pin" out of an old honda harness that was the same... ran the pin into the 4 pin connector where the green wire went... and then wrapped the other end in the hole where the spade connector went... eventually I will solder a spade connector to the other end for a cleaner install, but it was 3 am at the time and I didn't feel like doing it.. horn works perfect since then...
I know which wheel I want to get... it's an OMP wheel, but they don't make a hub for the 05 STI... where can I get a Sparco or Momo hub? I think the wheel bolt pattern should be all standardized so it should work with my OMP wheel.

i just used this as a guide putting a wheel in my 06 sti. I wasn't in much of a mood to screw with the airbag thing. so i dropped mine on the floor too. I figure i can get one out of a part out if i have to go back to stock...
| PeteDucati | 01-05-2007 05:53 PM |
For future readers - the Momo hub for an '04 WRX (don't know if the STi is the same) is far easier to install. I did have to hit the hub with a dremel to open the slot for the wires/plug for the horn, airbag, and cruise - but the rubber jimmie thing covers up 99% of it. With a minimal amount of effort and a wee bit of thinking I was able to retain everything except the airbag.

If I have time this weekend I'll take the wheel off, stretch out the wires, and take some high res pictures. There was one part of the install (wiring related) that made me scratch my head, but I think that's 'cause I wasn't in the mood to put on my thinking cap.

I started a thread for the MOMO hub/wheel debacle - I hope this helps anyone interested in an aftermarket wheel.
