License plate holder?

Hey when i got my WRX it didnt have holes drilled for the license plate so i just put it in my window. But i got pulled over bye the cops today and they said i have to put it on the bumper. So does any one know where to get those metal holders that like angle the plate down? And do u need to do any drilling in the bumper to mount the bracket for the holder?
| AWD>FWD | 10-19-2006 10:05 PM |
Yep, you need to drill for that too.

Advanced auto parts has a bracket made by Bell for ~$9. The guy at the store near me said "I don't think we carry those, but check aisle 6" so if they tell you they don't exist, go look anyway. From my experience, you can't find them on the online store.

That idea might not work in the USA, because if the requirements to have the license plate at a specific location in the front of the car. This will vary by state, but, I doubt that placing a license plate in fog light area is legal.

License plates do not have to be in the middle all the time, on the side is alright, as long as the plate is xx inches above the road.
A license plate located as low as the fog light is not legal, because it needs to be xx inches above the road.
xx varies by state.
In NJ, for passenger vehicles, the front bumper license plate has to be at least 12 inches from the ground, but no more than 48 inches.

Hey Mechie3 does that bracket fit into the JDM bracket holes that are slightly wider than the places you drill to screw the plate directly in?
| dibblejr | 10-20-2006 09:16 PM |
I will help you;
The bracket is fully adjustable for width and it will angle the liscense plate as well. Great deal for the price and if the bolts rust a little you can paint. I have had mine a year with very little rust.

that bell item doesnt fit the jdm holes anyways.
| dibblejr | 10-21-2006 08:46 AM |
Umm, I sent some to my friends in Japan and Europe and they said they did indeed fit.
Wouldnt make any sense to have a bracket that is adjustable not to fit.
Where did you get your info and what made them not to fit? I spent 9 years in Japan and I know the app. size of the plates. Def they are wide enough esp. since they fit on the long and narrow European plates.
As far as the rust, I have had mine for a year and in the north country in New York with all of the road salt only the bolts have rusted. That is overcome with a little paint.

Aren't those as illegal as not having a front plate at all?
| dibblejr | 10-21-2006 10:25 PM |
Why would they be illegal? In NY the plate has to be on the front and be visible. It is very visible unless you are right on top of it.
I have been sporting the angled plate mount and have never had a police stop me.

At least in NY, the law states that it cannot be on any sort of "movable" mount or anything like that. Dunno... guess I need to rip apart the law again.
| dibblejr | 10-22-2006 09:05 AM |
NY state law only requires that it will be mounted and visible on the front and rear bumper and be clean and free of any obstruction. I have found nothing of your claim of not on a moveable liscense plate bracket ect.
I have been running mine since I owned the car a few miles from the dealer floor 3 years and never had a problem. I have travelled all over the state and country without harrassment.

Hi my03rx
You missed post 6, 7, and 8. :)
It is true that some people have their plates lower than the standard height, and the police officer are not making an issue of it.
But, who is to say that one day, someone goes over a bump and the license plate makes a horrible sound and a cop is there to see it and checks the books and verifies the height and give out a ticket.
Or, that one day, it snows alot and the a state plow employer sees a car using its license plate to plow the snow out of the way, and the employer gets nervous because he will lose his job when everyone uses their license plate to plow snow, and notifies the governor, and from them on the height standard is enforced.

Having it over the fog doesn't make it that low. Just look at the picture I posted. Its almost the same height as stock. Cops just want to see a plate on the front no matter if its in the center or off to the side. I will bet money on it that having the plate mounted off to the side, over the fog will not cause any tickets.

Hi RODENT.
Let me see if I can clear things up. :)
My first response was to the comment on post #4.
"there it a replacment fog light cover thats a plate holder i saw it on japanparts.com"
Then, I got the Evo's answers which indicated that the plates are on the side.
My answer still applies as before, it might be too low.
Take notice that such plate holder, as indicated above, is a replacement to the fog light cover.
Also, I never indicated that a license plate had to be in the center only, that was added by someone else, like if I had said it.
You indicated that "having the plate mounted off to the side, over the fog will not cause any tickets". I totally agree with you, since the plate was just mounted on the side, about the same height as in the original place.
Again, if the plate holder replaces the fog light cover, it might be too low. :)

Okay but according to this picture-

The plate is mounted at the top of the fog cover. The US plate is 6" tall. This leaves exactly 12" from the ground to the bottom edge of the plate. Yes... I went out and actually measured this and I am on stock STi springs. Now if you were to lower your car 1", then you would violating the law since you only have 11" between the ground and the bottom of the plate (if your state had 12" as the law). GASP!
Seriously though, I doubt anyone would get a ticket even if there car was lowered and the plate mounted to the fog cover as shown above.

You guys are just taking this thread way to far. Just mount your plate holder wherever you want. The police have a lot more to worry about than the heigth of your plate.
Unless you are drawing uneeded attention to yourself by street racing they dont have time to stop and measure your plate. As long as they can see there is a plate on the front of your car at a quick glance you will be ok.

today i bought my bell license plate holder after getting a ticket for no front plate. i got home, put the plate on and went outside to check the fitment and it doesn't line up. i have 2 holes drilled by subaru that are too wide for the bracket. i also have 2 tiny dimple holes that do fit but i'd have to drill them out bigger to fit the screws. did anyone else have this experience? also, is there foam or the bumper beam behind the plate since were talking about the front bumper here?

Yeah, Im not sure why some folks are having a hard time with this. The $10 mount is adjustable and should fit any car. You have to get creative and use the bracket bolts to screw into your bumper, but they should fit without modding.
Mine has not rusted at all, except for inside the bolts where the allen wrench goes, but as mentioned above I also will paint mine black if it starts to look bad.
This $10 piece is def. better than paying $50-$75 for a JDM one.

Is there any way to make the plate stiffer? Maybe it's only NY plates but it seems that ours like to flex and for some reason that gets on my nerves. I thought that maybe I had one side of the mount torqued too much or more of an angle but they're both even and my plate is still flexing. Any ideas
| dibblejr | 12-19-2006 01:21 PM |
Mine are straight and didnt flex. You could add some type of plate frame to it and use all 4 bolt holes to secure it.
Is there any way to make the plate stiffer? Maybe it's only NY plates but it seems that ours like to flex and for some reason that gets on my nerves. I thought that maybe I had one side of the mount torqued too much or more of an angle but they're both even and my plate is still flexing. Any ideas
I have an extra Autozone plate frame that I am working on to make it automatically tilit back just like that. Once complete I will let everyone know.
That was not what he was asking though.
I believe he was saying that his plate is warped itself.

Correct. The plate flexs cuz it's so thin and it's gets on my nerves when I look at it cuz yes, I have a tendency to stare at my car when I'm not in it lol.
Edit* Pls let us know if you figure out how to make the plate do what that one on the teg did. I'm guessing some sort of springs were used?

Someone that actually paid the $ for one could chime in. I dont think springs but I may be wrong.
I tried a couple diff springs but no luck. I am going to try bushings that will replace the bracket bolts and just let the frame swing like it was on a hinge.

Well I didn't see any springs on there but I think one of the original versions in Japan were spring loaded no? Basically the side mounts just need to be loose enough to let the air actually force the plate inwards and I figure the springs would pull it back when idle. Maybe we should just contact the starter of that vid and ask them where they got it lol.

There are two JDM versions...
One is a spring loaded plate, the other is just the top bracket.
The spring loaded one actually has a full plate the license plate mounts on..

Well, we need to figure out how to make the spring loaded version.

It'd be a lot easier to make from scratch.
Search around for pics of the JDM Spring loaded version, and go from there.

I'm thinking modding the $10 will be cheaper. Fabricating something is expensive and also copyright protected. As stated just loosten the plate bracket bolts enough to let it swing freely. The hard part will be drilling a hole in the bolt to put a cotter pin or something to keep the nut from falling off and loosing the plate.
Thats why I was thinking a bushing. The weight of the plate should be enough to let the plate rotate back to normal possition when stopped.
However I havent had any problems with the police with the mount so there is really no need for a swinging mount. It is something I have toyed with when I was bored.

With no spring, its going to just swing..very ugly, very annoying, and screams for attention.
For the bolt all you have to do is use Red Loctite on it,

I tried the plastic coat on it and eventually it wears off. I think the loctite will do the same. Some small clips to go through the bolt or a castlenut with a small cotterpin would be better.
Like I said, I'm not running my car with the swinging plate, there's really no need, just something to toy around with.
I like mine in the tilted possition all the time.

Well, when I got pulled over this past Sunday, the officers made a note of how the plate is tilted, they didn't give me a ticket for it but you can tell they didn't like it.
| dibblejr | 12-19-2006 06:27 PM |
As long as they can see the plate at a reasonable distance and the plate is not over 3' high there is no violation. Therefore you didnt get a ticket. They were just jealous of your ride.
