lights under hood scoop

i've seen a few people in my area with lights under there hood scoop. they look really cool and i was wondering if anyone of you know what kinda light they used and how the hooked them up
| hpracingwrx | 11-16-2002 02:16 AM |
they have them in street glow and toucan industries and light companys like that, they are just neons, but they are only like 12" long instead of 36 or 24 long for the bottom of ur car, i think eurolite has em too, some companys even have the ones that go back and forth, i think theyre called tracers????
| ATX25RS | 11-16-2002 02:23 AM |
it depends on what you are looking for...you can use a neon tube, as suggested....you can also use the small LED driving lights...or even the LED washer nozzles, INSIDE the hood:D.....maybe even as an intercooler sprayer:D.....

I know I saw a thread here on this a short time ago. The person put the light under his scoop. He had some pics of the install . He also had it wired to an on/off switch
| piker28 | 11-16-2002 01:50 PM |
Thad be cool to have one that moves back and forth kinda like knight rider haha
| dRu888 | 11-16-2002 02:07 PM |
yep, both putting neon lights and knight rider-ish LEDs in the scoop have been done before. do a search on the net and there are a whole bunch of kits out there to do such things. and u could also do a search here because it's been discussed a couple times..

that's fabulous that that is your opinion. but he didn't ask for your opinion on neon lights, he just wants to know where to find them.
we've ragged on stuff like this since..forever..on this forum and it never gets old. "Yip yap yip yap", "rice rice rice", basically it comes down to each his own. It's his car so who are we to say anything about it? Geez, isn't like he's putting LED washers

I dunno much about car exterior lighting (mainly because it doesn't interest me), but isn't the hood scoop area a little bit too hot to be placing lights in? I know that after even just a regular commute drive, it gets pretty toasty there. Therefore, I thought that maybe there'd be an issue about melted lights? I dunno
Oh, and dRu888 I'm actually surprised that this thread didn't turn into a rice-bashing fest :D Guess we've all gotten more civil since the big OT fiasco.

dood...
omg...
i like the general concept that you're stickin up for subaru but....
....dood....
first off, last year was not the first year that the WRX has "came out". It was the first time it was released in the states. The WRX has been available for almost 8 years overseas in "non-watered down" and "non-bugeyed" format.
Also, when was the last time a Honda won a World Rally Championship? Ok, yes, that isn't even comprehendable.
Like mojo said, any fool can drive straight in a line.

and you still don't make sense.
I think you are basing the fact that the Honda company has been in the US market for 20 years therefore they have more experience in building fast cars.......=/

Oh wait, you said the WRX came out last year. Oh, that was smart, you were comparing a specific car model with an entire car company. Umm, okay. Ok, back to the lights for a minute, whoever brought up the heat issue has a really good point. I think this lights in the hood scoop idea is really cool, but can someone that has done it or someone who knows someone that's done it tell us about the heat. Does it hurt the lights or is there enough air flow???

Doesn't everyone know that Knight Rider light in your hoodscoop make your car go faster. It adds more HP. Just like the Streetglow LED Exhaust Tips and the LED Washer Lights But then again, I wouldn't know, I have a honda.
| Gobi | 11-18-2002 03:32 PM |
I think lights under the hood scoop could be a cool thing, but proceed with caution. You could very easily turn a beautiful car into something that people laugh at when it goes down the street. I saw a guy with a four foot tall wing attached to a pimped out Eclipse. That car look real nice until you got to the spoiler. All I could do was sit back and laugh.
The heat issue could potentially derail your whole project though. Talk to street glow and see if there's a rated tempature that their neon rails can withstand. Then take some temp. reading at the scoop.
PS - On the Honda issue I only have one thing to say:

I think the lights would look good but I wouldnt use them driving cause might be like imperonating a police officer or something. At shows it would look pretty dope.
| bluesunlion | 11-18-2002 04:03 PM |
before we all get into the my car/dad/big brother can beat up your car/dad/big brother BS, another concern with using a neon rail would be placement. LED's wouldnt take up that much space, but a neon rail could block quite a bit of airflow. Just something else you might be concerned with, since Subaru has basically quit selling bras for WRXs because of concern about decreases in airflow hitting the intercooler.
| piker28 | 11-18-2002 04:24 PM |
No worries with me considering I have no intercooler for air to go into:D
| NeoteriX | 11-18-2002 08:21 PM |
(trying to be helpful) There was a post before with someone who did this, try a search for it. Offhand, here's what I remember he did.
He got one of those neon glow tubes for your car's interior that you can find at like Target or Kmart or whatever. He had to cut away a little at the rubber attachment to the hoodscoop (you know, the thing that makes a solid seal with the intercooler and the scoop).
He actually mounted the neon tube like beneath the hoodscoop -- it's hard to explain, but basically, the net effect is that the light shines off the back of the hoodscoop, and you don't actually see the neon light tube itself, just the glow of it -- which is cleaner than actually seeing the neon stick sitting there.
He wired the thing through the firewall and just plugged it into the cigarette socket, but I'm sure you could splice it into some line for a cleaner setup.
I hope that helps. To each his own. :)

What I'm about to say will upset some of you...I like Honda's. I think they are great cars to own..speaking from experience because my last car was a 96 civic EX. The "rice" matter at hand doesn't have much to do with the manufacturer of the car, it has to do with the person that owns the car. Now, I try really hard to be as open-minded as possible about people and they're cars but iyts hard to. For example, I had a customer come into work today with an 89 mustang lx 4 CYLINDER and wanted an alluminum spoiler installed on his trunk. This car was also the REALLY ugly body style that has a trunk instead of the hatch, and the car was TEAL!!!! I also see a late 80's camaro Z28 with fast and the furious graphics and one of these park bench spoilers on its trunk too.
The way I see it, if someones car is going to be bashed because of what is done to it, its not the cars fault, or the manufacturers fault, its the person that owns it.
IMO Honda makes a great car because of their quality, and most of their cars look good in stock condition. An attractive car becomes ugly, when some kid does something to draw attention to himself, without thinking about what it looks like.
As far as american cars go, I have no respect for these cars because of their poor engineering, and their frequent breakdowns. Adding a big gaudy spoiler to one of these isn't as bad because you're not ruining a good car, you're just making a bad car a little worse.
Hate me if you will for what I've said here, but I can't dislike a company with the engineering of Honda. The things they have done for the import car spectrum as a whole is great( 240hp, 9000 RPM redline and still meet LEV status...From a NATURALLY ASPIRATED engine is very impressive) and I have to respect it.
Well, theres my $.02, now on your mark, get set, FLAME!!!:D

The honda thing comes up all the time because it seems to be THE rice magnet... Like pokemon for teenage drivers. Around my area, I see more trucks and mustangs with altezas these days than anything else

I completely agree. I think most folks do.
The honda thing comes up all the time because it seems to be THE rice magnet... Like pokemon for teenage drivers. Around my area, I see more trucks and mustangs with altezas these days than anything else

Anyone who puts a neon tube inside their hoodscoop deserves to be beaten up and have their car confiscated.
| skydiverman | 11-19-2002 03:02 PM |
completely aside: check local laws before turning them lights on while on the street, out here in wa, that'll getcha a run-in with the law.. (i'm not saying dont put 'em in, just be careful where you use 'em)..

beavisnuke its people like you that deserve to be beaten up and have there cars taken away
| BeavisNuke | 11-19-2002 07:14 PM |
BeavisNuke's criteria for having car confiscated:
1. Neon lights in hood scoop
2. Windshield washer LEDs
3. Altezzas
4. Gaudy aftermarket wings
I've seen all of these things on the street, and it makes me cringe.

What do u guys think of BMW?? I'm coming from the BMW group ( I still have my bimmer) and tell you what, I have seen riced out Bimmers! I wouldn't hate a fellow BMW member cause he has a riced out bimmer, its his car, his style. Why would you care what he is doing to HIS car?? if you dont like, them keep it to yourself. I didn't like hondas at 1st, but I don't mind them now. they are good cars, and last a long time. And y would someone put a fellow member down?? No, its because some of us have a strong sense of pride for our Subaru's.
And because exterior mods are not what the driver has to look at while he is in his car, its everyone else that has to look at it...

For what it's worth, I like the idea of having lights in the hood scoop. Something in a purple, or black light, on a black WRX....that'd lood mean!

oooh! rice!

Thank you to all abouve who just stuck up for honda. The last couple days esp., i have seen a lot of whining about "rice" on i-club (nasioc). Sometimes its about hondas, and sometimes its the WRXers getting flack from the 2.5rs ers. (this is especially been a issue cause of the whining about the i-club split and people have been talking about where loyalties lie). People have been saying that WRXers caused alot of problems and a whole thred baisicly turned into WRX bashing, then how WRX drivers were rude kids with no taste who turned their cas into ricers. (and of course rice talks automaticly have to include hondas:rolleyes: ) Anyway, i just wanted to say that reading all of this got me incredibly pissed off . People were bashing WRX and honda making comepletely ignorant claims like "WRXers are ruining i-club" and "they are all snobs, too good to wave to the rest of us subaru owners" I havea question for people who hate "rice" what is ur defenition. Is it any non-stock car ? Is a Ruf Porche? How about a WRX with STi gear. Or an "old school" 2.5rs, hooked up to rally? Oh, wait! Exhaust and a rollcage on a wanabe rally car is different from exhaust and a roll cage on a wannabe autocross. Too many people on this board have some superiority complex that can only have their way, and if they don't like someone elses style, than it must be bad taste, period. Well, sorry for the long post, just needed to vent. We all have different opinions and tastes, and the right to vocalize them as well. But it is wrong to just hate on people and their hobbies, especially those that work very hard to support it. Do you think the WRX would have been brought here had there not been the recent popularity in performance oriented compact cars? BTW, i started writing this a while ago, sorry if the topic has already shifted to something else. *edit: P.S. I hapen to think that neon under the scoop could be tasefully done as well.

Yes, it could be neat if done tastefully, its still illegal on the road though.
I'd like to see it at car shows. Specifically, a black WRX with the red nightrider lights ;)

For what it's worth, I don't care a lot for the "ricer" image. Not my particular cup of tea. But I'll encourage it in a heartbeat, because it's people customizing their cars. More people should love their cars enough to want to put that kind of time and money into them. And so long as they're happy with them, then who cares?
And besides, American's have no room to talk. I mean, lowrider pickups painted chartreuse, or Cadillacs with gold wheels? C'mon....
Hell, as far as that goes, the Germans just gave us the BMW Z4, and the Italians released the Enzo! Great performers, but EWWW! Almost makes Altezza's look classy!

The inside? Sure, beautiful. I really could get used to sitting in a car like that. Especially the steering wheel! The problem I have is when I have to get out and look at the outside of it. Not to my tastes, or to, well......ANY automotive journalists. Haven't read a single article on it where they praise the outside design. Many have flat out bashed it.
But, each to his own. So long as some are happy with it, that's all that matters. :)

the general deal w/ lights...
red, or blue, facing front, illegal
exposed (visible) neon tubes... illegal
unexposed neon's in blue or red, illegal
green, yellow, white are cool tho
don't use a color that could be construed as red or blue... , ie. purple or orange.
led's in any color other than red or blue are ok
and more than 2 sets of front facing lights on at a time are bad

Neon lights on cars...in the early 90's they were stupid. 10 years later... they're even more stupid. People who attach neon lights on the outside of their cars...are stupid and have no taste. Putting neon lights on a Subaru...really stupid.
Neon lights have a place in show cars. That's it, stupid.
