like my headlights? part 1

azimiut 07-31-2004 03:21 PM

like my headlights?
I had got those cheap ass ebay headlights after shattering omy old ones in a car accident :(. anyhow, i could not bring myself to buy oem or jdm at the time, while i had other repairs to pay for. so i got the ebay ones for $30. I thought why not. so i was playin around and too the lenses off my old ones, polished them as good as I could to get the scratches out, painted the lights black, and siliconed the lenses over the units. opinnions? they are still in the looks ok phase, but i really need new lenses that arnt so scuffed up. (and a better camera)

DAMN!!!!!!!! I just thought about that same idea about 2 weeks ago. I was thinking "I wonder if you can put clear lenses on the cheapo Headlights?" I guess you pulled it off. By the way they look really nice, just get those scratches out and you will be golden. Very original....Two thumbs up
azimiut 07-31-2004 03:53 PM

im trying to get the scratches out, but alot of them are tiny little stress cracks from hitting the back of a CRV. damnit. but do you know of something that might help clear them up a bit?
echo2k1 07-31-2004 03:59 PM

If the lenses are made of plastic you can try and use meguiars plastix or mothers plastic polish I used the mothers plastic polish on my corner lenses and it worked pretty well.
hyp36rmax 07-31-2004 04:06 PM

yes try a real polish substance on your lenses and a fine grit sandpaper, will help out till you can get yourself some brandspankin new lenses, check autopia board.

thats a fabulous idea of yours, and i like it, and its original!
MB38 07-31-2004 04:42 PM

Have any closer pictures?
azimiut 07-31-2004 05:00 PM

i will go take some pics
Spoolin16PSI 07-31-2004 05:06 PM

looks awesome
notyet227 07-31-2004 06:00 PM

use some plexus. Its a plastic polish that takes out swirls and scratches. Very good product. I used to use it on lightbars when i built them for state trooper cars. Works very good.

Does the light beam look right? In other words, does it affect the light's performance?
azimiut 07-31-2004 08:13 PM

the lightbeam looks great, next i want to see if i can get the HID kit on there without melting anything
satrya 07-31-2004 08:54 PM

Looks good. Thanks for showing that the curvature of the oem lens matches that particular aftermarket headlight unit. :)

I've got 3 questions regarding your approach:

(1) Bulb replacement access

Unless yours are different than what I recently got (same wrc-look, but possibly different manufacturer), the low & high beam bulbs are capped with a rubber seal in the back. I don't think the rear openings in the plastic headlight housing are large enough for the rubber seal caps to come off without removing the low & high beam units from the plastic headlight housing.

(Q1) Since the front/face is now closed off by the oem clear lens, did you cut off the rear portions of the plastic housing and fabricate new brackets to allow removal of the low & high beam units for bulb replacement?

(2) Turn signal / city lights

Imho, the turn signal is much more diffuse and not as bright when viewed directly from ahead compared to the oems. While I noticed that the silver reflectors doesn't seem to contribute much, looks like you decided to blacken out the entire silver reflectors altogether.

(Q2) Did you replace the turn signal bulbs with higher wattage bulbs?

(3) Beam pattern

I did a comparison between the oem and the particular wrc knockoff I got, and my conclusion was that the beam pattern was closer to auxiliary driving lights that throw a pencil beam with diffuse radial cutoff. Even after aiming, there is still a significant amount of light being thrown above the vertical cutoff line. I tried several bulb mask patterns to no avail. The low & high beams seem to have higher overall light output compared to the oem low & highs when projected to a wall thanks to the H7 bulbs imho. However, the knockoff lows have a narrower horizontal spread and a complete lack of vertical cutoff the oems have.

(Q3) How does the beam pattern of your wrc-knockoff lows compare to the oems?

Question #3 is not too much of a big deal because a good 90mm Hella projector lows (be it halogen or HID) would take care of the funcitonality and legality issue imho, but I was just wondering if you were lucky enough to get a wrc knockoff that comes with better low beams.

t.i.a.
azimiut 07-31-2004 10:55 PM

1st bulb access, there is just enough room to change the lights, I was wondering the same thing, but I actually tried it and I did it successfully.

2nd. I did get a higher wattage bulb for the turn signals. and since there is nothing covering the bulb, it is actually quite bright. plus the side markers blink.

3rd. i got mine from a guy who got them off ebay, he did the plug and play and it dont work routine. I wired mine like suggested on scoobymods.com. outside bulbs driving lights, all 4 high beam. the driving lights are actually silverstars, and are rather bright, and I feel that they give more than enough illumination. but I have been thinking about getting some projector bulbs for the driving lights, and then put them in the housing. I attached the front lense with rtv, just like if you did the headlight mod. I painted the unit with flat paint, i thought it would look best. anyhow, im off to the car show.
imprezive one 07-31-2004 11:45 PM

nice dude, nice! I still think the oem sti projectors look the best, but that's not bad at all for the money. Can't argue with the price.
satrya 08-01-2004 12:58 AM
3rd........
Thanks.

For the 3rd though, I was asking about the beam pattern itself. On the pair I tested, the low & high beam patterns were far from acceptable. They were bright, but would surely blind oncoming traffic.

Looks nice though
CrX1988Zc 08-01-2004 11:13 AM

Could you take some more pics? like some from the side or closer up would be good.
GoRacerXGo 08-01-2004 02:02 PM

I like them, they're great alternatives to the real jdm headlights. Just wondering though, how's the light output? I heard they really suck though, but I could be wrong.
- Matt
azimiut 08-01-2004 07:09 PM

yea, they are pretty bright for on comming traffic. my driving lights are pointed down just enought that its not that bad, but its no where near as bad as some F*ing lifted truck behind you at a light. if you just plug them in they suck, but if you do the wiring correctly with the relays, they are great. i will get some night pics, when the sun goes down.

CrX1988Zc 08-01-2004 09:59 PM

did you use clear silicone?
LatentWagen 08-01-2004 10:36 PM

i wonder what theyd look like in white?
azimiut 08-01-2004 10:50 PM

no i used black silicone. i blened in nicely. those pics were taken the next day, after it dried of course. i still need to trim the excess off, but it was getting dark and i needed to go home. i thought about painting them white and just puting them in to see what it would look like, but I really like the black, especially with the hood.
scrappydoo 08-02-2004 05:02 AM

Wow, those look really nice. You've turned the cheapo ebay lights into something that's actually worth putting on a car. Good job.
azimiut 08-02-2004 10:47 PM

this was just and experiment, im sure it can be done a whole lot better too.....
Leandro 08-03-2004 12:24 AM

I want to see with excess trimmed off. Overall looks good, but the extra silicone looks kind of sloppy (this is just constructive criticism to a creative person in whose shoes I will probably follow ;) )
scrappydoo 08-03-2004 03:22 AM

For anyone wanting to do this there's a trick you can do to make the extra silicone look alot better. Take an ice-cube and run it along the silicone to smooth it out, this will give it an even uniformed look.
WRXVII 11-11-2004 09:25 PM

looks very nice... I am also thinking about getting these lights.
crank0r 11-12-2004 02:15 AM

so basicly you bought these and took off a stock lens and glued it on ? sorry i skipped over thread incase you did describe what u did...

i have a set of these that i will sell for $25 plus shipping, if someone else wants to try this. pm if interested.
MikeWRX-NJ 11-12-2004 10:54 AM

definately gives them a better look.
azimiut 11-12-2004 01:02 PM

right now(literally the epoxy is drying) I am putting HID xenon projectors in there that I got from an audi TT.
Yin 11-12-2004 04:12 PM

Night pics....???

Good stuff.
sportwagon 11-12-2004 05:35 PM

I have UK300s...
I was actualy thinking about doing this to them today.... because Its snowing today... and I don't like how snow and ice gets caught up in the craks and crevices! So, I was pondering taking the stock lenses off and seeing if they'd fit over the UKs... unfortuantely I didn't pay 25 bucks for mine... and I don't want to mess them up! But, It would be great if I could add the lenses to them! I do have HIDs and the outside of the lenses doesn't really get hot at all... (I think that was a question asked earlier)
lawn boy 11-12-2004 05:50 PM

post pics of the hid
azimiut 11-12-2004 05:52 PM

i will hopefully have them all finished and done tomorow
azimiut 11-12-2004 09:33 PM

Here are the current pics. they are still not finished, I have to put the lenses on, but thats a job for tomorrow. they also still need to be adjusted, and the turn signal is another lens from the Audi TT. I dont really know what it was for, but it was cool so I put it in my headlights, and now I have projector turnsignals too!!!!

Out of curiousity, how did you remove the lense from the turn signal on the ebay assembly?
WRXVII 11-13-2004 09:46 AM

I like it in black than white.
mkultra69 11-13-2004 01:51 PM

How much, and where did you get the Audi pojectors? I realy want pojectors, but cant bring my self to spend $1000 for headlights. Anyways this is very cool and a right up would be nice.
azimiut 11-13-2004 03:12 PM

I got the projectors from a wrecked audi at my friends colission repair shop. he just gave them to me

to get the white out of the headlights, I just popped them out with a screw driver in the turn signal hole.

ouch...I was hoping not to destroy them in the process.
turbolover02 11-13-2004 07:09 PM

two thumbs up. i really wanted the jdm lights but i think that you just sold me on trying this mod instead of spending the extra money on lights.
azimiut 11-15-2004 12:25 PM

On one headlight, the white came out really easily, on the other, it came out in many, many pieces.
here are some more pictures.

thats looks great. way to be original
azimiut 01-16-2005 12:26 PM

the only problem I am having is that in the rain, the ballast still keeps getting water in only the right headlight. I just need to seal them better. the ballast originally sealed against the headlight housing, and now it has a large opening, and I must have missed a spot with the silicone letting water in, other than that, I love them.
David Medina 11-17-2006 08:27 PM

looks pretty good without the white turn signals.
Handsdown 11-18-2006 10:40 AM

dude, all the dust and dirt specks kicked up by all the cars on the road are going to make little scratches and pits in your projectors and eventually a rock will hit them and crack them straight through.

you need to have projector glass protected. on lowbeams it's absolutely necessary.

put the clear covers over them asap!
Handsdown 11-18-2006 10:46 AM

oh... and i'm going to say this as largely as i can so that people take notice:

It is absolutely imperative that you replace the optics with OEM or better projectors!
The projectors that come in the newer ebay lights have a cut-off, which is an improvement over the dual highbeams of the previous generation of ebay lights... BUT THEY ARE STILL TERRIBLE LIGHTS! they have bad coverage under the cutoff and the beam is not focused where it should be. they're cheap because they use cheap components that aren't engineered right- NOT ALL PROJECTORS ARE CREATED EQUAL.

If you are going to try this, get NEW PROJECTORS from an 06 wrx or another car with OEM projectors- or get Hella 90mm units from rallylights.com for 60 bucks a piece.

i know that 6-800 $ is a lot of money to pay for JDM lights but it's simply not okay to get cheap lights that will blind people just for the sake of looks. make sure you're using optics of OEM quality.

and even if you do replace the optics, you may find that the ebay lights are too weak and thin to withstand the heat of many bulbs and housings, so don't get mad at anyone but yourself if your cheap ass lights melt.
WRXDriftR 11-18-2006 11:55 AM

if I had a turkey sandwich to throw at every car that blinded me with inproperly aimed headlights, id be a happy guy :p
woosleycoon84 11-18-2006 11:56 AM

they look good
youngjom 07-10-2007 06:50 AM

ok, i already have a hid kit for the 9007 bulb (smart4cars kit), so i was wondering if it is possible for me to:

get these ebay headlight housing
retrofit a projector that works with the 9007 hid kit i have already

that way, i wont have to purchase a new set of ballast, etc for the light to work right? (and i`m sorry if i dont make ANY sense.. i am a total newb at this)

or somebody tell me the cheapest and the easiest way to do the retrofit right...
Mulder 07-10-2007 06:55 AM

True HID projectors use D2S bulbs and won't work with an aftermarket "kit". Also the Ebay housings are crap and not a very good starting point for a retrofit.
For a great deal of useful information regarding HIDs and retrofitting, please refer to the Electrical and Lighting forum. Start with the HID FAQ thread at the top and also search through the forum for the many threads on the topic.
youngjom 07-10-2007 08:02 AM

tell me what you think of this Mulder.. i need some professional opinion on what i`m about to do cuz i`m a newb haha.
http://www.wrxatlanta.com/forums/showthread.php?p=180946#post180946post180946

i am probably not going to end up doing a straight up retrofitting of a projector..because the only reason why i`m looking to install these headlight housings is that these might be the easiest way to get my high beams back, and look good at the same time.

however, i am FULLY aware that professional retrofitting with the right kind of bulb/harness/etc will yield the best result.

but at this point, i`m somewhat happy with the HID kit i have; i`m just looking to enhance them a little bit, so no need to have the absolute best. i figured HID kit w/projector housing w high beams is > then HID kit with reflector housing w/o high beams with my budget right now.
