Luke's One Lap '06 update

While not nearly as exciting as the ESX World-Challenge STi, Hoppes T2 adventures Locks Grand-Am Legacy, or the Irish WRX but on a more grassroots level, the One Lap of America is right around the corner.
Official PR and Sponsor Announcement to follow in 2 weeks. Here is a brief update:
So what has Luke been up to? As you will likely recall, while dominating One Lap 05 in class and running 5th overall, Luke was introduced to Mr. Tire Barrier in a most unusual ride that involved two successful attempts at flight. The car was rebuilt to above par standards and Luke headed out to Sebring for testing. The car ran beautifully in the morning. In the afternoon, the turbo decided to seize and a small radiator hose leak caused severe overheating. The car has been undergoing a major rebuild (with some added goodies) ever since.
Therefore, Luke has been busy doing track days in his wifes station wagon and the company car. VIR, while familiar, needed to be visited again. Luke likes VIR. The uphill esses are arguably the best section of racetrack ever. Next was No Problem Raceway (yes its a real race track) in the bayou Louisiana. This is one goofy little track that needs to be learned, and Luke learned it good. This weekend Luke is going on a 3000 mile + solo (my loser friends bailed) mini one lap, where he will visit Putnam Park and Road America. Luke will log 50+ hours of driving this weekend and may go insane or overdose on Red Bull. Stay tuned. The following weekend, Luke will pick up his car at Top Speed in the ATL, take it to Roebling Road, beat on it, tweak it, tune it, abuse it all to make sure it will be ready for the One Lap.
Thats it. Luke is done with his update. Luke likes talking in the third person. Luke is out.

you mean jealous of my sleepless nights and credit limits?
my track days usually require me to leave after work friday, drive all night, track day saturday then try to figure out how to make it home without falling asleep so i can be at work monday morning.
actually i did take 2 days off for this weekends craziness and get a week and 2 days for the actual one lap. but i took no days off for VIR, No Problem or Roebling (i got it down to a science).
sponsors help too.
i gots to get back to work now, i've got 2 crazy bids to deliver tomorrow and don't want to work on them all night.
thanks for the support guys.

No, paypal was closed. I know what you mean about sending them in. The website let me submit the entry, but I still have yet to hear back from anyone. I would like to run in the assertive group, but I had to compromise with my friend in the R32 and settle for intermediate. He wanted to do novice, but I convinced him otherwise. Hopefully, I can get in. :D

I did Autobahn this past weekend and there were three guys there learning the track for One Lap. One had a 964 Turbo (965) from CT, the other had a Z06 from Tx, and a Noble from FL was there too. Both the Z06 and the 965 were instuctors so I was able to ride along with them. The guy from CT has done One Lap 3 times and his stories are great. Sounds like a fun (and crazy) event.
Good luck.

Great facility. Audi Car Club sponsored the event. It was 3 days and 3 tracks - very cool. It was my first time on a track and I loved it. I am returning on June 2 for a south course day. Very cool that you got in on the Lotus day, that filled up quickly.

yes i was. i need to start bringing my computer w/ me so i can respond quicker. i was there, the evo (i mean i) destroyed the brakes after 2 sessions. i could of put the stock pads in and drove around leisurely, but i had a 20 hour drive home ahead of me. i really think i could've been more ginger w/ the brakes and not really been any slower - lesson learned. the calipers were ferrari red, now they're pinto brown - the rotors are chunked.
Thanks for the info. I will be there. I am going to try to sign up. I just hope it is not too late. It looks like we could use a few Subies in the mix.
if i would've known that you guys were there, i would've looked for you. i was in a white evo, i was parked close to an '04 blue STi. i left around 2pm saturday.
everybody else-
there were lots of One lap people at Putnam and RA. The red noble was at putnam. Stock and very very fast (i guess for $96k it better be), also well driven. He said the grey noble has all kinds of mods, is very fast, not sure how good the guy can drive but he is doing track days every weekend - so he's getting good. He is having some mechanical problems as the car is really modded to the limit. The red noble guy also said there will be a third noble at One Lap.
putnam is a great track. i was not expecting this, i thought it would be another low budget IRP or No Problem, but it's really nice. it was wet and slippery as snot in the morning, i think i was the fastest guy out there in the rain. tons of run off room in every corner but the last one. the crazy HPA beetle was there, the fab work and build of that car is beautiful. i think he said 480hp and torque at the wheels. his brother in law had a srt4 and was giving him a run for his money, but the beetle was in the pits shortly after w/ laptop out, i'm not sure he was running an aggressive map or not. ron adee, the crazy truck guy, was there in a stock STi. i never once saw him on the track. i think he had a tire issue. he was at Road America the next day w/ the truck. i forgot how good and mean that thing looked.
road america is crazy high speed and walls everywhere. plus there was ice on the track, mostly in straights, but also entering the carousel. it melted around noon. it is absolutely viscous on brakes. i think Jon, the AMS Evo driver, took some pics of me tearing up the brakes. i'll see if i can't get some from him. road america was filled w/ beautiful well prepared cars and excellent drivers. lots of experience up there.
i need to start taking pics and lap times on these things. i did neither, although i did my cd player timer at putnam, which showed 1:20 - 1:21, but it has a small delay after you push the next track button, so we'll estimate high at 1:23 on a bone stock evo. i have no idea at road america or no problem, i was there to learn the track more than anything else.
oh yea, i drove 1500 miles home from road america in 19 hours straight.
next week, i'll post about Roebling on a seperate Press Release. i'll be there with the STi for it's only shakedown and test before one lap. i need to dial in the new teins, tires, etc. i'll get lap times and pics for you. in full One Lap prep last year i ran a 1:23 or 1:24 i think - on the stock potenzas.

Luke, we did get some pics, It might be a day or so before I get them up.
We also turned our calipers brown, driving Road America in the rain in 03 I didn't realize how tough it was on brakes. Saturday I took the car around, came back in and said "the brakes feel like crap" We went, looked at the tape and i thought.. well.. yea I gues going from 145mph to 45mph will make brakes feel bad.
Road America is a terrifying track. :) If you have problems looking ahead, go do a day there, you will either learn to look ahead, or crash.
Luke the 1:23 sounds about right for Putnam, with the bone stock (no flash or anything) I was running high 1:25s in a semi-snow/wet condition.
Did you get any times at Road America? I snuck into the 42s, but never got a clean lap in that "C" group... I figure wide open I could stick it in the 2:40.5x range.

I don't like Road America.... Straaaaaaaaaaaaight, turn, straight, turn, straaaaaaaaaaight, turn, straight, turn, straight, turn, straight, turn, straight, tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurn, straight, kink, straaaaaaaight, turn, turn, turn (only fun part), repeat. Way too much gas and brake wear, and not nearly enough fun corners. :/
Although I bet it's fun in a champ car.

Road America is a fun track, the high speeds make it very interesting for the corners & brake coordination.
The Carousel is fun @ 90 exit at 115mph, the kink entry at 115mph and exit @ 120, turn 5 is fun coming down from 150mph and braking at 350 ft point down hill towards a concrete wall and tire barriers also top speed of 155mph up the main straight. Average speed of just over 100 mph with a time of 2:29.74.
Its a great track!! IMHO.

Nigel i wanted to get a ride from you Saturday but my 7 year old was getting kinda tired / hyper so idecided to take off at around 2:30 as well.
I got to see some nice cars run and met a couple of new faces there along with some old.
Those new zo6's are sure impressive, when driven the right way..
Hope to see you again sometime. Nice to meet you..

I guess that would explain why I could not find you in a black STi on Sunday. I agree, RA is pretty tough on brakes. Without a BBK I was playing it pretty safe coming into turns 1 and 5 at only about 130 tops. On the last session with a much more open track I was trying to hit 140 and still brake conservatively, but that was still too much for the FHI 4pots and HP+ pads up front. I drove home with a pretty soft pedal. Nigel, nice driving by the way. I guess I am not surprised that you were cooking your brakes at those types of entry speeds. All in all, a very fun weekend. I cannot wait for the Lotus track day June 5th at Autobahn.

Nigel, nice driving by the way. I guess I am not surprised that you were cooking your brakes at those types of entry speeds. All in all, a very fun weekend. I cannot wait for the Lotus track day June 5th at Autobahn.

Luke, best of luck next week. I'll be out of town the last week in April and off the board (vacationing in FL actually) but wanted to send you a quick note. You have my cell # if you need it.
