McRae to sub for Loeb in Turkey!
Very cool news.
Colin McRae to deputise for Loeb

By Glenn Freeman Tuesday, October 3rd 2006, 15:25 GMT

Former world champion Colin McRae will replace Sebastien Loeb in the Kronos Citroen team for Rally Turkey.

Championship leader Loeb recently broke his arm in a cycling accident, and former works Citroen driver McRae has been drafted in to drive the No.1 car in his place.

Nicky Grist, who has joined McRae on 83 rallies, will co-drive for the Scot in the Xsara, which he last drove in 2003 as a team-mate to Loeb.

A statement from the Kronos team said: "(Team boss) Marc van Dalen and (Citroen Sport director) Guy Frequelin have searched for the best solution to help the team defend its leadership in both the drivers' and manufacturers' championship.

"Colin McRae has been chosen to help the team, and he is highly motivated to do his maximum to serve Seb and Kronos Total Citroen's interests."

The 1995 champion's last WRC appearance came at the end of the 2005 season, when he contested two events for the factory Skoda team, and ran second before retiring in Australia.
It will be great to see him back behind the wheel of a WRC car yet again, even if it's against SWRT.

A little Q&A with the man himself...
Exclusive Q&A with Colin McRae

By David Evans Tuesday, October 3rd 2006, 18:50 GMT

Following Kronos Citroen's announcement that former world champion Colin McRae will replace Sebastien Loeb for the Rally Turkey, Autosport's WRC editor David Evans caught up with the Scotsman for more details.

Q: When did Kronos first contact you?

Colin McRae: "I spoke to Guy [Frequelin] late last week, and we agreed everything on the telephone on Sunday night."

Q: What's the deal for?

McRae: "Just for Turkey."

Q: How do you feel?

McRae: "Very excited. It's not very often that you get the chance to jump straight into the world champion's car, is it? Having said that, it's really unfortunate for Seb [Loeb]."

Q: Do you get much of a test?

McRae: "No, not really. I'll do half a day tomorrow [Wednesday] and then a day on Thursday. The test is in Kielder, just over the border in England."

Q: What has Guy asked you to do?

McRae: "Just to score as many points as possible, but remember that I have to finish - so there's no pressure at all! Actually, I enjoy a challenge, and throwing myself right into the middle of a big battle for the manufacturers' championship is going to be a big challenge."

Q: Did you have to think about it much?

McRae: "Not really, no. Given that I retired early on Saturday [from the Colin McRae Stages in Scotland] I had most of Saturday to think about it!"

Q: What do you expect from the car?

McRae: "I would think it will be completely different from the last time I drove the Xsara in 2003. All of the World Rally Cars are running at a different specification now."

Q: When the regulations changed from active to mechanical transmission at the start of this season, you were talked about as one of the drivers it would suit. What do you think?

McRae: "Sure, I think it will be slightly easier to get the car set-up without having to map all of the differentials; it should be quicker to get comfortable with the car. It should be better to get in it from cold."

Q: What do you think is possible?

McRae: "Well, [Marcus] Gronholm is going very well and [Mikko] Hirvonen as well. But after that, it's all quite erratic. Petter [Solberg] is usually there or thereabouts until he has a problem, but there's nobody really consistently on the pace. I would like to think I could aim for a podium - but I know I'm putting pressure on myself by saying that."

Q: Do you dare think about a win?

McRae: "You never know what can happen, do you. You wouldn't have said a win was possible before I started in Australia in the Skoda last year. But then once the event got going, we were in with a fighting chance of victory - you never know. It would be nice to be around the pace and able to pick up the big points on day two and three."

Q: What about Australia, would you like to do that as well?

McRae: "That's not for me to say. I hope for Seb's sake that he's fit again, but if the team were to ask me to stay for Australia, it could be good. I think I showed last year what a difference experience can make in Australia and I'd like to go back there."

Q: This will be your first event back after 10 months away from WRC. How difficult will it be?

McRae: "It's not going to be as difficult as it was when I came back for Rally GB. Rally GB is a much faster event, which makes it tricky. Turkey is quite slow, really. Having said that, I've only done it once before, but I don't think it's going to be that difficult to jump in to it."
I know thats the problem

i think Colin could be one of the greatest rally drives of all time if he wasn't so wreckless, but then again thats what i admire about him.
Easy Rider 10-03-2006 05:45 PM

Cool - good to see him back - I hope he doesn't bin it!

Good Luck!
bitterWRX 10-03-2006 07:26 PM

This may sound like a dumb but he is only scoring points for manufacture championship right? He's not scoring points for Loeb right?

edit: just making sure because "Guy Frequelin have searched for the best solution to help the team defend its leadership in both the drivers' and manufacturers' championship." this sorta threw me off.
Easy Rider 10-03-2006 07:38 PM

Colin will be trying to place higher that Seb's competitors.

it's awesome that Colin is back. I whish the Skoda didn't f'up in Austraila, changing that stupid clutch without having any problems with the old one :furious: Can you imagine, Colin on the podium in Skoda???
With Citroen it will be certainly easier.
Why'd he leave in the first place?
McRae didnt choose to leave.
He had a bad run of results during 2003, dispite the Citroen being great car. His last great results were really back in 2002 with Ford. When the reshuffle came around there were younger, sharper, cheaper drivers moving up the ranks and they were more appealing to the teams.
If he had the opportunity he would be in a fulltime WRC seat again as it clearly wasn't his time to be retired from WRC.

Rumor has it that McRae was also severely offended by the teams' decisions to choose younger drivers over him.
Boxologist 10-04-2006 04:57 PM

I was going to say the tree will do McCrash in, but considering its Turkey, i'll go with a rock with axle in the ditch!
Geese1 10-04-2006 06:47 PM

I was going to say that Petter might actually be in the running now that Loebs not in it...

But then I remembered that the Subaru cars this year seem to have debilitating technical problems on the order of every other stage... :(

Anyway, good to see Colin back. I was just getting into Rally around the halfway point of 2003, so I never really did get to see him do much driving. But as others have said, he and Nicky put on a good showing in the Skoda last year, so there's no reason why they couldn't be competetive in the Citroen.

Awesome news for them and for rally!!!

I wish Colin/Nicky could have run for Skoda in '06. I think they would have helped develop the Fabia into a strong car. Look what they did in those two events they ran. Stupid WRC rules...

Hopefully we'll see Colin/Nicky in the championship next year. *crosses fingers*

GO COLIN GO!!!

So no poll to see in what stage he crashes?!?!?! Don't get me wrong....I love McRae. Citroen is going to keep him on a short leash...well depending on what Ford does!

he is so fun to watch, this should make turkey a very interesting rally.
No second Kronos outing for McRae

By Glenn Freeman Wednesday, October 18th 2006, 10:41 GMT

Colin McRae will not get a second outing with the Kronos Citroen team as the squad announced that Xevi Pons will drive Sebastien Loeb's car in Rally Australia.

Loeb's broken arm has not yet healed enough for him to return to action, meaning that Kronos will have to continue their battle for the manufacturers' championship without him at the next event.

WRC teams can only nominate two drivers to be eligible to score points for the manufacturers' championship, and replaced Pons with Sordo from Rally Germany earlier this year.

But while Loeb's replacement McRae struggled on his one-off return to WRC action last weekend in Turkey, Pons showed a return to form and finished fourth.

As rivals Ford took a 1-2 in Turkey, they moved ahead of the Citroen team, who only scored two points with Sordo.

After getting used to the car, McRae had been hoping to get a second outing in the championship-winning Xsara, especially after running so well in Australia last year with Skoda.
Cheer up; there's still a chance he'll turn up in Wales.

Looks like Kronos loss Gauloises.

That means they don't have any sponsorship other than Total.
