my Valentine One Setup part 1

ecasirhc 03-07-2005 08:39 AM

my Valentine One Setup
here's mine...

I put the radar up here because supposedly, the higher, the better the reception... but...

1. its kinda hard to read up there.
2. too noticeable for cops when lighted.
3. too hard to press the buttons for mute. :furious:
ecasirhc 03-07-2005 08:39 AM

so I wired it through the panels to my clock and replaced my clock with the remote display. Since the clock is one piece with the plastic translucent cover, I found something in my house that was flat and tinted and used it as my cover to make it look OEM. I wanted it so people can't see there's a Valentine One unless its on. anyways... here's the pix.

So now the problem was pushing the muting button in that small area. So I took apart the remote, and soldered wires connecting to the muting button. I wired that to a Momentary button that was inserted next to my shifter. The power source of the V1 is wired to accessory so it comes on when the key is turned to accessory. This is where i placed my button.

Now this way:

1. I can press the button easily whenever I want because its right next to the shifter.

2. If a cop looks through my window, he wont see the button because my leg covers it.

3. While driving, the cop wont see my hand reach up to the rear view mirror just to press mute.

4. The main radar unit is high up there and since I got a tinted visor for my front winshield, you cant see the radar from the front of the car.

well heres a video of the final results.

Looks great dude. Kudos for some ingenious ideas :)
drkwtsn 03-07-2005 09:12 AM

Wow, very nice. When I first looked I thought it was just going to be someone else simply mounting their V1 up above the mirror... But now that I see your setup, it makes me want to do something similar. Again, very nice
fastsubie 03-07-2005 09:16 AM

Very, very good job man!

Wow thats ****in cooll! I just stuck mine on my windshield but thats sweet. Not dangling in the way or anything. I got my valentineone along time ago, how much are they now? Bets radar detector ever btw for anyone who is considering purchasing one, its for sure worth the $$$.
Yom 03-07-2005 10:46 AM

Wow nice!

How did you fit your broadway mirror on your rear view mirror?
Aphex28 03-07-2005 10:51 AM

nice install. hehe! It sounds like you farted at the end of your vid :D
Yom 03-07-2005 10:54 AM

That is sweet. I need to do that.

I think PS Works's dad owns one as well or something like that.
austinpike 03-07-2005 12:36 PM

Looks like a lot of work, nice job.

Although it sounds like you are putting a lot of effort into a stealth install, and in the end you still have the V1 sitting up there above the mirror. If the cop peeks in at all he is still going to see it.

I couldn't get my suction cups to stick to that screened area worth a darn, had to rest it on the mirror (as you are doing I guess.) You can drill a hole in the clip mount and use that leftover 3rd visor hole to get the detector up higher, a little less visible. I broke the tab off the power connector for "quick release" (it still stays in there fine) and can slip the detector out and stow it away in like two seconds. With tint and the time it takes for the cop to pull a U-turn, merge through traffic or whatever I'm not too worried about them seeing me messing with it.

They are around $400 for the radar, $40 for the remote. I think if you buy one, you get a lifetime warranty meaning if they update to newer versions, you can send yours back, and they will send you the newest model...read up on it/not sure www.valentineone.com
Wow nice!

How did you fit your broadway mirror on your rear view mirror?
I don't have the compass/auto dimming mirror so My Broadway fits fine.
Just read your profile but are you a real L&L manager/owner? Which one?!!
Yeah, It's in La Verne, California (off the 57 and 210 freeway)...maybe I should organize a Hawaiian BBQ car meet there with like 1/2 price lunches...
what do you guys think?
austinpike 03-07-2005 06:54 PM
if they update to newer versions, you can send yours back, and they will send you the newest model...
The upgrade fee from say V1.7 to V1.8 is ~ $200, cheaper than buying a new one but you can probably do better just selling the old one and buying a new one.
Quack 03-07-2005 08:03 PM

damn...i was thinking of doing something similar, but you beat me to it (and i don't have a remote display yet either) ;)

looks great.
ExtremePowerOuters 03-07-2005 09:56 PM

Awesome radar.
Mulder 03-07-2005 10:22 PM

Mine, not quite as elegant as in the Sti because of the gap in the headliner when the visor is removed, but I was able to use an existing pushpin through the headliner to attach the V1 mount after drilling a hole in it (and yes that clip is a PITA to drill through).

The remote display, mounted INSIDE the instrument cluster (note this is the older, smaller remote)-

I also have the remote audio unit, mounted under the console out of sight, with the volume/mute control remoted and installed in the switch blank by the shifter (sorry no installed pic of this).
Trunk_Monkey 03-10-2005 07:52 PM

Sweet install mulder, nice spot, but double sided tape would look better then velcro IMO. Is the remote mount wireless, of not how did you get wiring to it?
Mulder 03-10-2005 08:19 PM

It's not velcro, it's the "dual-lock" stuff. I think it looks fine. Double-side tape alone would not fill the gap under the display (the cluster is curved there, not flat).
Wired, not wireless (Valentine doesn't make a wireless display). You can't see it in the pic but the wire exits the display on the right and goes through a notch at the edge of the cluster. Only a bit of the wire is visible.
ima5exyindo 03-11-2005 02:19 AM

man thats awesome maybe i should come to u for a stealth install if i ever get a V1 :disco:
Erudition 03-16-2005 04:30 PM

Why are you all concerned that the police will notice the detector? They are not illegal (at least in CA).

Just don't want to get noticed?

They're not illegal (at least in CA) but cops still don't like them. It just gives them a reason to pull you over to hassle you about anything else they can.
kool168 03-17-2005 12:46 AM

very very nice!
InfamousDX 03-17-2005 01:20 AM

Wow.. thats a nice custom setup right there.
WR^2X 06-20-2005 07:33 PM

Bump for a great idea! I just did this setup this afternoon, though I put my pushbutton right in front of the DCCD auto/manual toggle switch. The whole thing took about 3 hours, including letting the glue dry for the remote display's mount. I tried to find a pushbutton that had an orange LED in it so that it would look stockish, but wasn't able to find anything. Tinted acrylic can be found through McMaster-Carr, part number 8505K112.

I also found a mod for the remote display where someone desoldered the LEDs, drilled out the display, and was able to color code each radar band and add LEDs to make the signal strength indicator go from orange to red. I wasn't feeling that adventurous and didn't really see the need for something like that, but it was very cool.
silver04rs 06-21-2005 06:29 AM

Looks Great!!!

Does it still get good reception from the rear? it just seems that since it is so high it wouldnt pick up a signal through the rear window as well

do you have any pics of your setup with it in the rear window ecasirhc? That sounds interesting. I have been thinking of doing the stealth install (via the clock area) but I would like to have the main unit somewhere not noticeable at all.

I was half thinking of something like a set of A-Pillar mounted gauges with the uppermost one containing the radar detector guts. Or maybe getting a Defi gauge housing and cutting up the back of it a bit to fit the radar stuff in there.

do you have a link for that mod? I've thought about doing this, as that is my biggesst complaint with the remote(and normal) display is the single color. not quite sure which smt leds were used originally.
thanks
WR^2X 08-08-2005 05:31 PM

Damn, I knew somebody would ask for it right after I had cleaned out my bookmarks!
Luckily I was able to find it through Google again: Valentine One Remote Display Mod - Colored LEDs
It even has part numbers and vendors! Let us know if you do it.
AZ-GT 08-08-2005 06:43 PM

Check www.radardetector.net. There's a guy in the V1 forum who offers a service to change the color of the LED's for the different bands.
l_0_s 08-08-2005 08:21 PM

I'm in for the rearwindow install. That sounds like a perfect install.
bfarm 08-09-2005 10:13 PM

I am really interested in finding a stealth way to install this V1 without losing effectiveness. Here is what V1 site had to say about stealth mounting:
I want a hidden detector, with the receiver remote-mounted down in the grille, but you don't make one. Why not?
- B.L., Florida

I want a remote too, but I don't want to give up any protection. For the same reason you see high radio towers, the detector antenna needs to be high in the car; it sees over hills better, increasing range.

Mounting down in the grille amounts to a low tower. You also have the problem of traffic ahead blocking the signal. The only time I've seen a grille mount outperform a windshield mount was a case where the detector could look under the truck just ahead. Normally, a high mount has an advantage because it's up where it can see through the windows of other traffic.

Another thing; the really sophisticated direction finding and bogey counting that V1 has requires perfectly synchronized information from the front and rear antenna. It's possible to maintain that synchronization when the system in broken apart into units at the front and rear of the car, but you pay F-15 prices. My best compromise between maintaining performance on the one hand, and hiding the detector on the other, is the Concealed Display. This keeps V1 in the window where it works great, but operates "dark;" all the light-up warnings are transferred to a small Display that you can locate where only you will see it.
So we need it high up, and it needs rearward visibility. There is the standard stealth install with the unit mounted above the rearview, behind a tint strip, which is okay. But I want a cop to be able to look into my car and not see a detector at all. That said, I am looking now into mounting the V1 or its guts into a gauge pod. The two choices are a console mount pod a la:

https://www.xtremediesel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=531

Or a triple A-Pillar pod with the V1 guts in the top pod like so:

http://www.rallysportdirect.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=505

Anyone else interested in this? Ideas? Thoughts?

I would like to be able to mount an actual gauge and cram the V1 guts behind it, or maybe atleast put a false face in the gauge spot so it looks standard. I think that the overhead console pod has the most promise.

I sent an information request to V1 proposing this type of install to see if they had any feedback.
Check www.radardetector.net. There's a guy in the V1 forum who offers a service to change the color of the LED's for the different bands.
This guy changes out LED's on your V1 concealed display to make the radar bands more easy to identify. X band is green, K band is yellow, Ka band is red, and Laser is blue.

Das ultra pimp man- I can't wait to finally get one
advanracing62 08-10-2005 07:16 AM

I thought mounting that high (above the mirror) would be too high and not allow the rear detection.
bfarm 08-10-2005 09:51 AM

From what I understand (and from an email from V1) as long as the two antennaes (the black acrylic section on the front and back of the V1) have a clear view through the front and rear of the windows, all is well. That's what I'm going for... we'll see :).

Stealth Install
ecasirhc & ***** - I have a few questions for this install as I am preparing to purchase the V1 and I love how stealth this looks, even though RDs are not illegal where I live.

1st question, how hard was it to hardwire the remote to the main detector unit? I know it's basically phone cord so everything is pretty much plug and play, but what I want to know is how/where you passed your wire from the remote to the main unit.

2nd question, how hard was it to remove the the hosing where the stock clock resides? What did you use to pry it up and out?

3rd question, does the remote have to be glued onto the tinted platic piece you were talking about and does it have be flush up against it to be visible? Did you have to remove the mute button so that it could be flush?

Lastly, regarding the momentary switch, how did you wire that to the remote's mute button making your own mute button? I plan on putting my mute button on one of the blanks next to the I/C spray button.

tia :)

hmmm..I really want one too. If I were to do it I would mount it in the rear of my wagon, right next to the headliner and get a remote display for up front.
I actually moved my Valentine One and plunged it to my rear window so you don't see anything at all in the front. So the only thing you see is the remote display in the clock console. Works Awesome. Also, if you guys want to move your valentine one and need a longer extension cord, I found out and tested that regular phone cords work! haha (it looks exactly like one but i was afraid to test it at first because it might be slightly different)
How do you like your v1? I live in socal too and was wondering if it is useful. how does it perform on local streets? freeway?

thanks

I know it's basically phone cord so everything is pretty much plug and play, but what I want to know is how/where you passed your wire from the remote to the main unit.
The remote is wired to the main detector with another phone line. Plug-n-play. The wire runs through the headliner, down the A-pillar, behind the gauge cluster, and to the clock pod.
2nd question, how hard was it to remove the the hosing where the stock clock resides? What did you use to pry it up and out?
Easy, just grab and pull up.
3rd question, does the remote have to be glued onto the tinted platic piece you were talking about and does it have be flush up against it to be visible? It should be flush up against the tinted plastic, but I can't say that it HAS to be... Not sure about that. I did not try mounting it without removing the mute button.
Lastly, regarding the momentary switch, how did you wire that to the remote's mute button making your own mute button? Hmm I thought the higher the radar detector, the lower the reception since the cops shoot at the licenseplates & lights..

but Man... I love how the concealed display replaced the clock! Looks awesome
WR^2X 01-23-2006 04:35 PM
Hmm I thought the higher the radar detector, the lower the reception since the cops shoot at the licenseplates & lights..
Maybe for laser, but not for radar. The radar cone is so much wider when it hits you, no matter what they aim for, you'll pick it up. Otherwise how would detectors give you any advance warning? You want it to be up higher for longer-range detection. Laser's a whole other story though. The cone is only about 3-4 feet across, so the detector could miss it. But that's not really an issue, IMO, for two reasons. 1) No cops around me use laser. 2) By the time you realize laser's actually hit you, you're screwed. That's where the laser jammers come in.
HAN 02-18-2006 01:30 AM

How did you power the unit if it was mounted in the rear, ecasirhc? Is the standard power cable they give you long enough, or did you have to do somthing else? Also, the phone cable cords that have to run to the remote display - where did you conceal them? I'm looking to pick the unit up as soon as I can round up a few dollars and I would appreciate any help anyone could offer on these questions...

The cord used to power the V1 is a standard phone cord so you can make it any length you want. The one that comes with the V1 is 8 feet I believe.

If you want a Valentine One, call Valentine Research at 1 800 331 3030 and ask for a returned V1 and you will get 10% off the retail price of $399. It will be the latest version V1.8 POP2 w/ Euro-mode and 3.826 firmware and that comes with all the accessories and a 1 year warranty.

hello
hey guys, sorry i don't check this often, if you guys wanna ask me more questions, feel free to AIM me: ecasirhc

but anyway, looks like all questions are answered, took me about 30-45 mins. i wired everything through the inner panels. i used normal wires at radio shack for the power. use phone extension cords for placing V1 on the rear windshield and make sure you point the front correctly. you will need the windshield mount and to do some modifications. but anway, i waiting for my digital camera in the mail, ill take more in-depth pics if desired. the one i used last time was my friends. anyway laters.

if yer interested in an install, let me know, maybe i can help you out if yer in my area.

this might be a silly question but can cops tell if you have a radar when you drive past them?
i've heard of cops having "radar detector DETECTORS"...
but if its legal in your state to have detectors why would a cop have this?

Yes. There are radar detector detectors. No matter how intricate your install is, if they think you have one they will find it. (Only applies to those of you who live in an area that has prohibited them.)
