hmmm... they need a 245/40/17 dammit ... though.. that 275/40/17 sounds meaty.

i'm upset with the lack of decent sizes for 16's :furious:

275/35-18 for my RX-8. Muuuhahahaha :D
| del105 | 11-04-2004 01:55 PM |
KC do all RX8s come with 18's? and if they do can you fit a 315/35/18?
| KC | 11-04-2004 02:01 PM |
All Manuals have 18s. 18 x 8 wheels.
Sure, you might fit more with a wider wheel. :)

Well, at least it's not a tough choice as far as sizes go for me...
I'll be on either the 215/40/17's or the 215/40/17's...
Good thing I didn't pull the trigger on the lightweight 16" wheels yet. The budget just went up.
Corey #89 STS
Hmm... 225/50/15... wonder how that would work?

I was really hoping for a 225/35/17. They make the FK451 in that size.

This could suck for STU.

this does suck......
guess it's gonna be Kumhos then....
they still have nothing that is optimal for the STi, in 17's or even 18's...

yup, I feel ya. I was hoping for 245/40/17 or 245/35/18.....
btw, you see the local guy here selling the 17" rota BBS knockoffs? they'd look good on your ride :)
hmmmm, I wonder if those 255/40/17's would fit under my STi?.... hmmmmmm... sure wouldn't work for the STU class though.

Ehh the 245s have been working fine for me, what I meant was it gives even more options to the non awd people and nothing new for the awd cars other then I can get rid of a little bit of sidewall by going to 18s. In other words I hate the tire rule :( cause I would love to run some 275s.

245/45/17 then? what modifications (if any) have you done to make them fit? lot's oh camber? etc...
if you went with 18's would you then try the 245/40/18?? looks to be about the same size as the 245/45/17... which, looks real wide to me. too wide maybe....

I have less the -1 degree of rear camber and 245/45/17 azenis, depending on wheels and right height you need to roll the rear fenders.

Soo.. according to the Miata.net tire size calculator a 235-40-17 has a 24.4" diameter instead as opposed to 25" of 225-45-17. Is that going to be meaningful? 215-45-16 is 23.6" and people have said the gearing on that is pretty nice..

Glad to see the 18's...but they still don't look they'd be great in the rain (in comparison to S0-3's, Pilot Sports, etc). I kinda like the tread pattern of the 215's better.
Once again...*** is up with no decent 16" sizes. I don't think that only Subie people want the 16" size....so I don't see why they don't make them wider already!!
Mike~~

....another thing on the 16" size note. The 215 Azenis had a proper diameter for us. Apparently that is no longer applicable.

After seeing the new sizes, I'm glad I picked up a set of used RE070's this fall.
The sizes I would want is 235/40/17, and that won't be available until Q3.

I'm thinking along the same lines as you. I found this chart to be more helpful than the Miata tire calculator.
http://www.sstire.com/tireheights.html
So I use 215/45-16 which according to the chart is 23.62" I love the gearing but need more tread to the ground. To me the next best thing would be 235/40-17 according to the same chart it is 24.09" is that close enough to have a gearing advantage? For reference the popular 225/45-17 is listed at 24.97".

Weren't the FK451 guys running 245/35/17 shaved this year?
Whatever it was, it was enough to make up a second over a set of 225/45/17 Azenis on a 60 second course.
The 245/35/17 is 23.75" according to that site. I'm sure you'd notice the advantage of a 235/40/17

Son of a b#@h- so much for trying Azeni's. Maybe the 16" lineup will fair better w/ the T1R, but those are a ways out unfortuantely.

Yep 245/35-17, and Tom at least said they were worth at least a second on a 60 second course. At any rate I'm fairly dissapointed, a 245/35-17 was on the preliminary list for the new Azenis. Since I think we really need to step up to shaved 245s on 8" rims next year I guess we'll look to the BFs or the local (to us) Kumho choices. Mike felt the Kumhos in 245/40 were worth almost as much as Tom felt the 451s in 245/35.
All I know is that in the Pro I lined up against Steve several times and it was freaky to HEAR the difference in shift point off the line with his 245/35 and my 225/45s. Clearly an advantage when you dig out of a corner (and fairly disturbing to your rythm when you hear someone else shift a FULL second before you do)

I drove Steve's car at our last milwaukee autox. Morning were on my 225/45/17's, afternoon was on his 245/35/17's. I think I dropped a second and a half on teh 245/35's on the course IIRC.
Who's actually gonna shave tires for a local event though?

Corey you crack me up.
We don't have local events anymore. That means for us we're travelling most weekends and it will be for a Divisional, Tour or Pro in many cases. I very much doubt I'll be willing to shell out the cash for several sets of shaved tires next year but hey, if you had asked me about trailering my STX car last year at this time I would have said no way and now we're looking for a truck and trailer for next season.

 I think we went 30 runs total on the shaved 245/35/17s ;)
They make a good size for us, 275/40/17 for the STi for one lap if these tires really are that fast.

As for the 225/50-15...it's about time...that's an extremely popular size, so it surprised me when it was never available in the Azenis (not that it matters much now, since I've moved on to R-compound classes anyway).
But only one 16-inch size and it's only a 205!? What the ...? 225/50-16 and 245/45-16 are far more common sizes than several of the other sizes they have listed there.

I don't mind if they update their design, I talked to a rep about it at last years MAZDA REV IT UP event in Houston. I just hope they will be better in the rain & don't have such poor tread life.

For the upcoming season, i would like to run a set of the Falken's on an old set of stock wheels. What do you all suggest? Buy a set of the Sports now (205/55R-16) or wait and buy these (205/40/16) or just say screw it and find some cheap 17'' and run 225/45/17's?
Thanks

| Danno | 11-07-2004 03:52 PM |
If you want to stay economical and use the stock wheels you have, I would recommend the current Sports in 215/45-16 if you can still get them. That's what I ran this year and they work quite well, being wider and shorter than the stock size. If you want to purchase new wheels, you have more options. With the new tires not appearing in 245/35-17 or 245/40-17 (and 235/40-17 not even coming until 3Q) I'm going to have to either use Kumho MXs or shaved FK-451s next year if I want to stay competitive.
| DrBiggly | 11-07-2004 10:56 PM |
Saunders, if you have the time to wait I would definitely go with the 205/40/R16s. The gearing advantage would be very much worth it. :)
Now I just have to ponder if I want 245 FK-451s, 215/40/R17 new Azenis, or 225/45/R17 old Azenis...
I really like the idea of the 235/40/R17s; just wish it was a 245/40 :(

The 235/40 > 245/40. The tire being very slightly thinner will be offset by the fact that you will have better gearing. If I had the choice, I would run 235/40 over a 245/40 any day.

i just wish they'd produce sizes w/ overall diameters w/in reason of each other. i'd love to run 225s in front and 205s in back, but 225/50 >> 205/50. :(
word is that the oft-rumored hankook Z212 ST tire is again a go, with tons of 16" sizes. also, apparently Yoko, Advan, and Toyo are coming out w/ ST tires.
KC, i think these sizes just made the RX-8 the STU car to have! 275s = teh nice.

I've seen the Falken Traction Circle comparing the new Sport vs Old ... the new version expanded every part of the circle pretty evenly ... except for wet traction ... which was much better.
