Ford launches revolutionary new Focus
Car set for debut on next month's Rally New Zealand
The new Focus is a radical departure from the old version
Ford Rallye Sport has unveiled what it describes as its "most technically advanced and revolutionary rally car ever".
The latest evolution of the Focus RS WRC with a new Peugeot-style rear wing and extended front bumper will make its competition debut on Rally New Zealand next month and team insiders predict it will be a significant improvement on the last year's model.
The car, designed by former Prodrive chief engineer Christian Loriaux, features a new aerodynamics package, revised rear suspension, improved weight distribution, an updated lightweight engine and more efficient engine and transmission cooling.
"If World Rally Cars can be described as stunning, then that is the word I would use to describe the new Ford Focus RS WRC," said Loriaux. "The large rear wing and revised bumpers give the car a very contemporary look from the outside and much has changed underneath as well.
"We know that the new car is quicker than the old one," he added. "We began with a clean sheet of paper and we've ended up with a radical, revolutionary car, which retains all that was good from the previous model."

The Ford Focus RS WRC 03 is the first car Christian Loriaux has designed since joining the team at the start of 2002. Starting with a clean sheet of paper, initial design work began in mid-May 2002 and just seven months elapsed between then and the car's first brief test run six days before Christmas. Since then the car has undergone a comprehensive testing programme, most of it on gravel, in advance of its New Zealand debut.

Engineers at M-Sport and Ford's newly announced Team RS technical department in Cologne, Germany, worked closely on the project. Mainstream engineers at Ford undertook detailed analysis on Loriaux's roll cage design and the new rear suspension while the wind tunnel in Cologne was used for advanced testing in the development of the aerodynamics. The dynomometer there was also used by Ford and Cosworth Racing engineers for dyno work on the new engine.
Says nothing about it having anything to do with the SVT.

And to quote the article:
"The key to the aerodynamic changes is a switch to the Focus SVT170 sold in the USA as the base model for homologation purposes. It is longer, which has made it possible to shift the Subaru-style "chipcutter" aerofoil rearwards, aiding downforce, while extending the front spoiler."

The entire Focus RS WRC is NOT "based on the SVT Focus." The front and rear fascias are based on USDM Focus skins and that's it.
M-sport is using USDM fascias because they're longer than the Euro ones.
Our crash standards warrant longer bumper beams/fascias than Euro Focus's and the rear wing can't extend past the furthest point on the vehicle.
This is the reason.
Skippy - I wanna see a Tamiya model of this too. :D

Don't get nervous, that's not entirely true.
The only thing they used off of the USDM Focus was the front and rear valances. And even then they were highly modified. Reason they used US ones, is that they're longer, and the new Focus neede to meet FIA standards. But that's it, similarities end there.

Dude! You guys watch that during the rally? Nicky Grist went through the new Focus and described all the changes.....it truly is a completely different car. They moved everything in the interior down and back to get it closer to the CG, we know all about the bumpers and such, plus the engine is configured differently and the radiotrs have been moved to the front, just under those big hood vents. Melikes!....oh and Go Petter! :D
