Nürburgring Nordschleife who's driven it ? part 1

Nutter 01-28-2006 09:00 PM

Nrburgring Nordschleife who's driven it ?
Im off to the UK soon to visit my family and friends on a long overdue vacation. Well my wife has friends in Germany that we plan to visit also. Thing is they live about 1.5 hours from Nrburgring Nordschleife, also my wifes friend owns and runs a restoration shop and drives a 90's 911.

So long story short we are taking a trip to the Nrburgring Nordschleife to do a few laps each in his 911

Has anyone here been there, done it ? comments please :D
AndrewSS 01-28-2006 09:36 PM

all I have to say is... that sounds REALLY awesome! :)
ExitVisa 01-28-2006 09:45 PM

Look up johnfelstead - at one time he had a DVD of his laps around the Ring.
ChrisL2 01-28-2006 10:38 PM

Yes, I've driven.

Yes, it is fun.

It is nice that is is open year round now, though I think they close it if there is snow/ice on it.
gregr01 01-28-2006 11:05 PM

Been there, done that (in a brand new U.S.-spec M-B E350) , and it's an experience not to be missed... can't wait to go back, especially if I can get my hands on something a little more sporting!

Be sure to check out the 'ring Web site for info, especially dates and times it's open to the public.

If you have previous road racing experience it'll take you several laps to get familiar... although you'll be having a lot of fun on the first lap. There are some especially dangerous spots, but it was easy to tell where those danger areas were located... just keep a lookout for the swelling crowd behind the catchfence and you'll know an especially tough complex is ahead!

Have fun and be safe! I was passed by bikes riding double, bikes doing wheelies, full-out race cars (as much race car as they allow during public sessions), trains of BMWs and Porsches, and passed POS doo-doo wagons full of tourists. It's a wild scene, and then it started raining. My wife wanted a 'ring sticker so I told her she had to ride around to get one (they're in the gift shop at the register).

Seems like few pay attention to the rule about no cameras or video while on track, but I did. Waiting in line to get on the track--note the wrecker going out to collect a BMW that failed to navigate one complex...

As far as the whole camera thing goes how was it enforced (if at all) I would really like to get it on video. :)

Im not sure how much it will help me but I have played PGR2 "a lot" and driven the "Burger King" hundreds of times. I am also an experianced AutoCrosser. I hope its enough to keep me on the blacktop.
ChrisL2 01-29-2006 12:59 AM

Remember, you have to pay for any damage you cause to the road if you crash.
ToddStratton 01-29-2006 12:19 PM

Been there many times; I love it. Living 1.5 hours away helps a bit though. But you always need to be in the right mind-set. It's a long track and if you let your mind drift...yes, you'll be paying for the whole bit, the extraction, armco damage, medic, etc., and reportedly a flat fee if you really close things down for long stretch.

Send me a PM if you're serious about going. I've done 130 laps and still consider myself a novice, despite the fact I can get around at a good clip.

The official page now has a web cam (it's been cold and snowy here lately). Also, they are opening more in the winter months, but I'd be wary of going unless you have snow tires or something that works in cold temps. I went the last day it was open in 04 and it was not exactly fun.

randy zimmer 01-29-2006 12:38 PM

We went straight there after arriving - jetlag?
We went 1.5 hours to find the entrance!
Everyone we asked shrugged and thought we were nuts (some, a few times).
We went to a building that looked promising, but it was a ride and drive of the GP course.
We went the right way, but not far enough.
We went on the road to the castle which would have worked but stopped 200 yards too soon and turned around.
You go waaaay past what looks like the track entrance, turn onto a small road and go thru a tunnel (under the last straight) and drive all the way back to get to the start.

It was a quiet day with little traffic on the track. Debi was going to call notes but I soon told her just to relax and enjoy the scenery.
It is very long, there are a few turns after crests (gotchas). I went quickly but was always careful. I can now say I did it and sucessfully with no issues.
I wish the same for you.

always keep an eye out for bikes and try to keep to the ideal line...dont fear the ring, respect it...
Fitz 01-29-2006 08:56 PM

RyanC has a few laps under his belt as do I. Mine was nothing more than "recreational" though as the rental 3 series bimmer was on snow tires.

John Felstead's DVD is outstanding. He has several passes of the course, including one where he narrates the best lines to take.

Have fun. It's a dream of mine.
Subie Gal 01-30-2006 09:05 AM

been there. driven that :D lot trickier than it may seem....

have fun and be careful.

each day i was there, more than one car was hauled away on a flatbed ;)

I went there for a day. One of the most fun times I have had ever. I was driving a pos toyota aventis rental. It had stability control which reeled in the fun a bit but litterally saved my arse a few times when some of my friends were driving....

Wow, that soon, eh? Well, that's Tues/Wed and the web site shows it open. A lot can change in 3 weeks, but there is a high chance of still having snow on at least parts of the track. I'd love it if they opened it when it was all snow covered. I have a video of a 911 with snow tires doing a lap and it looks like a blast.

It's under "Geplante Offnungszeitung Nordschleife 2005/2006" scroll down and look for the drop-down with the months listed.

Plan to drive Feb 21st. :)
spongejosh 02-14-2006 12:24 AM

be careful, especially in the porsche. driving any more than 7/10 on the ring is a recipe for disaster. as subiegal said, there are multiple crashes a day out there.

i drove the ring in my 02 wrx. it was awesome. i also drove the hockenheim ring.

have fun.

The weather for next week does not look too good. :( So it may only be a relaxed drive arround the Ring. If it's dry and clear I will push it a little but it looks like it may be wet and cold.

I was there in the summer of 2005 and remeber looking at the schedule .... It might not even be open to the public at this time of year .... look up Ben Lovejoy's website and you can get more info than you need about 'The Ring'

Yes a 911 can jump up and bite you but, properly sorted they are great drivers cars ...

I was driving a BMW 1 Series rental when I was there and had a tremdous time .... the rental company didn't like the corded tires and metal to metal brakes when I returned it

also check out the gas station across the street from the entry road (cheaper place to get your Ring gear) .....

yes, I have a ringer sticker on my car

call me or email me if you want more details

won't happen ...... pics and videos are against the rules and they check your car before each lap
[emailprotected] 02-14-2006 04:37 PM

here's a cut and paste from a friends site ..... they plan a group trip every year

I cannot say enough about the Nrburgrings old circuit, the Nordschleife. It is easily the most beautiful and challenging track in the world. As Jackie Stewart said in the movie The Flying Scotsman, The Nordschleife is 14.5 miles and 186 turns of what is absolutely the toughest driving in the world. Inclines of 18%, declines of 21%, 68% of turns are blind. Turn speeds range from 180mph flat out kinks to 25mph 90 degree turns. Being such a long circuit, it is not unusual to have sun on one side of the track and rain on the other. The Nordschleife, or the Green Hell as many call it, is a track that commands respect, but gives back a ton of fun. A fast lap times in a 996 (911) Porsche in the hands of a professional driver is in the 8 minutes 30 second range. A fast time in a Golf, Jetta (Bora) or Passat is roughly 10 minutes. The Ring is considered a German roadway, and all German rules of the road apply. This means that if you are rear-ended on the Ring, the accident is 100% your fault and you will actually be cited by the police!! This has happened before. Please understand, not a soul will deliberately rear end you, but you have to keep your eyes VERY open on the Ring (and when on the autobahn) and ALWAYS use your turn signals (it is customary to always signal right and move off the racing line when you see a car coming up from behind at a rate significantly faster than you are driving) to acknowledge the faster car behind you and move to the right to let them by. Cars traveling over 220mph as well as motorcycles running as fast as 190mph may overtake you , while on the same lap you may come across tour buses running as slow as 55mph. Helmets are encouraged, but not required on track. There is no helmet rental facility available, so plan on bringing your own helmet.
[emailprotected] 02-14-2006 04:39 PM

also a Garmin GPS is highly recommended since it will map your laps and with a quick glance you can tell lwhat corners are coming up ....

if caught it is an immediate lifetime ban ... as you can see in the pics I posted I skated the rules also ;) because, there is an in car pic exiting Quiddlebacher approaching Flugplatz and the Aremberg corner .... you can see it on the GPS unit which mapped the course lap after lap

lol, a 911 for the first time around nurburgring? Wow, watch the rear end, they like to swing out unexpectedly, especially at 150+mph ^_^

have fun !!!

Snow ! Closed ! :(

Im back in the UK, we only had 2 days in Germany and the track was closed both days. Oh well just means we will have to go again . . . SOON !

John
Phil Jr. 02-23-2006 08:35 AM

What a bummer. I would not have left Germany without doing at least 1 lap.
[emailprotected] 02-23-2006 08:45 AM

sorry to here .... maybe next time
LIQUIDSK8S 02-23-2006 08:58 AM

I envy anyone that has driven that track........I plan to go next year.....which is too far away :(

Also......with an old 911......remember not to jab the brakes mid corner or if you start to lose it. If the back end starts to come out under power.....stay on it or lightly let off the gas....but not much, just enough to stop the slide.

Your doing your first ever lap of the ring......in a car that many people have named the "grim reaper", and they have a very good reason for calling it that, especially on such a high speed track.

So unless you plan to really really take it easy, I would suggest renting a BMW or something that is very forgiving, especially if you dont have experience with old 911's. Just my $.02, best of luck to you though and post pics when you return :)
Phil Jr. 02-23-2006 09:00 AM

he got shutdown, mother nature had the last say. Further proof of the WAPCE theory.
scrmblr2 02-23-2006 12:18 PM

Raise my hand
I did 1 lap w/ the wife in our opel station wagon! Best drive of my life. I remember giggling a whole lot. Got passed by everthing. It was still awesome:)

I would go back in a second. If you have the time, the castle in the middle of the ring is a nice side trip. Little bit of a hike up, but the view from the top of the turrett is worth it.
Nutter 02-11-2008 08:17 AM

Here we go again !
Off to the UK Wed Feb 27th, side trip to Germany Mon Mar 2nd - Thu 6th. Maybe going a couple of weeks later in the year will improve my chances with the weather.

Again I have been offered the chance to drive a late 90's 911 Trubo (maybe a 993) going to take plenty of pic's and maybe get to use my digicam for some in-car footage.
