paint interior
what kind of stuff should i use to paint my interior, i want shine color (metallica color) blue and pink

please help

thank you
KAX 06-25-2006 02:42 AM

i think your guess is going to be as good as everyone elses for those colors you chose. what exactly are you painting? the entire dash or just the trim peices?
jasonpig 06-25-2006 03:04 PM

i want to paint entire dash, and the trim peices
rsalicrup 06-25-2006 03:23 PM

read this page on this page. I think I explained it pretty good
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=912618&page=3&pp=25
jasonpig 06-25-2006 04:14 PM

but i want a metallica color, with blue and pink, do they have those color?
and do i have to sand before paint it?

thank you
rsalicrup 06-25-2006 04:31 PM

it is always good to sand it before painting. My recomendation if you are not going to remove the silver off.
Wet sand it down with 1000 grit paper or dry with 2000 grit. Use the primer I mention since it will cover all scratches and bond pretty good to the surface let it dry for atleast 12 hours (most sandable primers needs to cure for that long) then paint it with Tamiya colors for plastic model not for R/C cars shells. it will come out nice and smooth. The more paint you use the better it can be when you polish it. I use either plastic polish or scratch x (both Meguiars product).

can i get the same result as the pic. after i followed your steps?

thank you
rsalicrup 06-25-2006 05:00 PM

well in that pics, I just sand it down with wet 2000 grit paper to it natural color, no painting.
rsalicrup 06-25-2006 05:02 PM

if you want to make your silver shiny as hell with reflection, I found out if you use Never Dull on it work great. I had an experience once that I removed paint off plastic by using Never Dull. I was trying to do the same but it end up coming out shiny on silver.
jasonpig 06-25-2006 05:09 PM

thank you for helping me!
i find tamiya is very good stuff, so after the blue and pink paint do i need clear coat?
because i want to be like the pic. below

jasonpig 06-25-2006 05:27 PM

how many ml do i need to do the project
thank you
rsalicrup 06-25-2006 05:37 PM

I would say you would use about 2-3 cans. Clear coat will make it better and easier to clean also. On Tamiya paints, buff the paint before you apply clear coat. I would use just a 100% cotton rag to buff wihtout anything on it.

BTW link not working
jasonpig 06-25-2006 09:21 PM

thank you very much : rsalicrup

do u know where can i buy the tamiya spray paint?
rsalicrup 06-25-2006 09:49 PM

any good hobby store
jasonpig 06-25-2006 10:22 PM

wiil the tamiya bring some bad smell after i applyed it on the trim and dash?
rsalicrup 06-25-2006 10:44 PM

nope. I did notice the smell when I used Kryon though. Another thing, don't get exited and start putting thinkgs in the car. Be patience and let it dry very good or you will get finger prints marks. I will let it start on a friday night with primer. Monday AM to paint and Sunday noon to install back.
jasonpig 06-25-2006 11:06 PM

so it will takes about a week, can i still drive the car without put them back?
what kind and what brand primer should use?
thank you
rsalicrup 06-25-2006 11:24 PM

not it will take you about a weekend. You can use some other fast drying paint but it will not be as smooth as with high grade plastic paint like the tamiya. I would use Tamiya primer also. Also do you want it gloss, semi-gloss or flat? Yes you can drive with evrything removed, how you think I did it? ;)
1SlowCavalier 06-25-2006 11:54 PM

would u use the same process to paint the dash as u would painting the trim pieces?
jasonpig 06-26-2006 12:48 AM

how to get the shine color like the pic.?

jasonpig 06-26-2006 12:49 AM

i want it to be gloss!
how?

thank you
jasonpig 06-26-2006 01:09 AM

what color of the primer should i use?
jasonpig 06-26-2006 01:15 AM

look this pic. how can they paint at the top of the cluster, that area is soft.
and ideal for that?
but i want a metallica color, with blue and pink, do they have those color?
and do i have to sand before paint it?

thank you
Woot Metallica!
rsalicrup 06-26-2006 01:39 AM

For glossy look get TS series spray collor. It will be TS-##. TS is for gloss paint. This number will be under the color you choose. To achive that glossy paint up there, there is a lot of buffing. If you apply the paint right you may achive that right away. I got lucky once building a model and I achived that by the second coat without buffing. For the blue Tamiya make a a nice Metalic Blue (TS-19). This color is very easy to buff out actually any metalic color is easy to buff out from Tamiya. For pink I have no clue since I don't use it. What ever you do don't use power tools to buff, you will burn it!!!

Now as for primer. If you get any light color (ie yellow, white, green and red) buy the grey primer and white. You have to put a coat of the grey then cover with white.

There is a clear coat that will change color but needs to be applyed by air brush, this is the deep end of the pool.

As for dash painting, I have no idea. Fabric dye I guess?
jasonpig 06-26-2006 02:11 AM

how many coat do i need to put on the dash and trim for blue and pink, and how many coat for clear coat?

how to do the buff?

thank you

from the sounds of things if i were you i would get a professional interior shop to handle it. what you are talking about is alot of work and time. i myself went for the krylon ultra flat black finish. if it scuffs i just repaint with what you want you would have to sand prep and do the whole process over again. it all comes down to how much time you are willing to put into this. if you are mechaniclly inclined enough to remove the dash and said trim parts without breaking anything and then reinstalling them. and if you get a interior shop to do it then if they mess up they have to fix it. if you do it yourself good luck take your time and be patient.

jasonpig 06-26-2006 12:02 PM

thank you to share the pic.
rsalicrup 06-26-2006 12:59 PM

I was under the impresion that you where doing the plastic (radio trim, A/C vents) only. For the actual dash, I would have no idea on how to paint it. Like said before I would take it to a profesional.
WRXDriftR 06-26-2006 01:53 PM

gloss spraypaint leaves a gloss finish.

but i think painitng the top of the dash will give you SUPER GLARE on the windshield when the sun hits it. My dads car came with this shiny leather protectant on top of the dash and blinded the driver in sunlight
WRXDriftR 06-26-2006 01:55 PM
look this = eeeew why??
fixed
rsalicrup 06-26-2006 02:58 PM

You may want to reconsider about painting your dash. It will get old and you are stuck with it unless you fork out $ to get a replacement.
jasonpig 06-26-2006 04:15 PM

i was consider about it will get old the color will fade. so i may just paint the radio trim, A/C vents for now, cause i do not find any profesional shop doing this in my area, i am in calgary canada.

I went for a flat black with metalic flecks it looks hot and i sanded the hazard button down till i got to the red plastic and the just put a black triangle to show what the button was and then used a glossy finish to cover it and the trim piece to protect it... it looks really sharp looking to

Better then my origanal plan of doing a wrb blue interior like was posted
i will have pic tomorrow..
jasonpig 06-27-2006 01:34 AM

use a small flat tip screw driver and make sure to cover the screw driver with something soft as to not scratch the dash or the A/C ring. simply pry around the sides of the ring untill it kind of pops up then get your finger under it and pull it the rest of the way .
jasonpig 06-29-2006 01:30 AM

i will send my pic up when i finishied the painting.

thank you for help

haha when I started reading this thread i thought you were insane but that looks pretty good, if you enjoy it then whatever man knock yourself out and good luck :)
jasonpig 06-29-2006 02:08 AM

why do you think i am insane?
designfate 06-29-2006 02:19 AM

becuase its RICE
ekw 06-29-2006 08:32 AM

jasonpig,
i kind of guessed from the first post what you were talking about,
and expected to see the thread rapidly turn into a flame fest.

the interior you seek is unlikely to fit in w/ the 'mainstream' opinion of what a Subaru 'should' look like.
and i wonder if that much shiny pink & blue will be a bit hard on the eyes.

but - it is your car, so do what you want, and enjoy it.
if your work is skillfully executed, and you like it, that's good enough for me.

is this a daily driver or a show car in the making?
teh Phil 06-29-2006 09:31 AM

Off Topic, but where can I pick up a can of Clear Coat? I checked Advance and Walmart and neither of them seem to have it.

that looks pretty good, what kind of paint did you use and did you clear coat it?
Dhcheckeracer 07-17-2006 03:33 AM

when i read this i thought you were crazy for wanting your nice looking interior to be bright blue and pink but now that youve done just a couple of peices and not the WHOLE interior i think it actually looks good..so good job
Cyclops 07-17-2006 05:04 AM

Same here, I read it and thought WTF? Then I thought no way would you follow through. Now that it's done though it doesn't look too bad, granted I'd never do it to my car, but it really looks something like a blinged out show car. Nice job painting.
jasonpig 07-17-2006 10:22 AM

thank you guys, i used tamiya paint. yes i did clear coat it.
it is not a easy job. lol
but i enjoy it.
wrX-RTD 07-17-2006 01:15 PM

some of the pieces stand out a bit much for my personal taste but it looks like you did a really nice job on it. i think the red turned out a lot better than pink would have also.
