Painted my stock WRX headlights and removed yellow bubble
1 Attachment(s)
Last night, my friend and I painted my headlights. It was a pain in the ass to take 'em apart ...until we popped em in the oven, then they came right off. I won't have enough money to buy morettes at the moment, so I guess I'm gonna have to stick with these "JDM's" for now. What do you guys think?
| girl | 08-08-2001 02:27 PM |
yo ray
looks pretty siiiick man......those jdm's cost too much anyhow. no projectors though:( nice cost effective upgrade though. i like!!
| samowrx | 08-08-2001 02:31 PM |
looks good. you weren't affraid that the oven would melt the plastic?
| jacobhorn | 08-08-2001 02:35 PM |
Looks trick, but pic is a bit blury.

when you remove that colored bubble...is the bulb underneath it colored? I mean if I turn on my turn signal, will it be a white or a yellow/orange?
| Raymond | 08-08-2001 02:57 PM |
The bulb under the bubble is CLEAR, so when its lit up, the light will be off-white.
| PhlypSide | 08-08-2001 03:07 PM |
This does look pretty good.
Now if only it were color matched... I wonder how that would look.
I'm betting pretty good too, maybe even better than the black frame effect :)

subaru logo
How did you get the blue subaru logo in the front grill? DId you paint that? I've only seen the pink one and I don't really like that on the blue car
| Raymond | 08-08-2001 03:35 PM |
Yeah, I painted the blue logo. Just use acetone or polish remover to remove the black part and then just paint under it. Getting the black **** off is a bitch.

hehe
Im gonna be copying off of you tonite!

been there, done that hehe. www.scoobymods.com
Just curious, why'd you paint them? Just for the look or does it make the blinker more defined? I really am curious.

I wanted the yellow part off.......and i figured i might as well paint to make em look JDM style

If you like that badge mod go for the lighted badge mod. I did it to my Rex and my fathers 00 RS and everywhere we go people look and comment. They are both painted very lightly gloss white so I could change the color of the bulb whenever I wanted. Mine has a yellow bulb for the yellow car with matching clear corner lights and my fathers is white to match the white car. I will probably put a super white in his in the future. You will love it.

Looks great. I was thinking about doing exactly the same thing, but you beat me to it :)
The pics are not clear, can you post more pics from different angles?

www.scoobymods.com i already did a write up on clearing out the headlights. All you need to do is paint the backing once you get the peices apart. I'm only guessing but black rustoleum would probably do the trick. Any definite on the brand?
| trhoppe | 08-09-2001 05:15 PM |
I was going to use a brush on testor's paint, but then I throught about the heat and was wondering if I needed to use high temp paint or of the regular stuff would work.
| Frank | 08-09-2001 05:21 PM |
rustoleum is good enough to stay on my gas grille i assume the headlight doesn't get over 450 degrees.
| trhoppe | 08-09-2001 05:30 PM |
lol
I hope not...Rustoleum it is!
I'm gonna go screw up my headlights tonight guys, wish me luck!
I have to borrow the girfriends hairdryer as I actually don't own one :D Honey can I borrow your hairdrier for a night?, hahahaha thats gonna go over well....

Use High-temperature, black, non-glossy paint at Kragen. It should say 500 degrees on it. Its whats used on the engine, and it works fairly well, and looks pretty good
| trhoppe | 08-09-2001 05:47 PM |
wait a min
Non glossy?
I was going to use really glossy paint....did you use non glossy?

| Raymond | 08-09-2001 06:07 PM |
Yeah, I used non-glossy, but thats just me. It's up to you on what you want. I don't think it would hurt though.
| trhoppe | 08-09-2001 10:41 PM |
well
I got the headlights apart and took the little orange thimagiggers out, but I ended up wussing out on painting them. What did you use to mask off the part that you didnt want to paint? I tried regular masking tape but just couldnt get the exact roundness that I wanted.
| HS WRB-rex | 08-10-2001 01:27 AM |
hey, would this possibly produce a sharper cut off if I were to put in an HID conversion? I was planning on getting the WRC lights but I dont think its worth it with the low budget I have. They look damn good tho
| mbiker97 | 08-10-2001 09:37 AM |
Very nice. Another member of i-club painted his like that too, but he painted the reflector of the blinker also. I would probably paint mine like your and install one of those Philips bulbs that look silver but flash orange. :)

I am said member....
To see what it would look like if you painted the whole area, do a search on "DIY headlights"
There is an example of my WRX at the end of the post.
The pics arent great, but you can get the idea.
BTW, I also used flat black. But I didnt use high-temp, and I havent had problems.
Actually, I am gonna go bump the other post so it will be easier to find.
Enjoy.

Masking the relfector
I was the one that masked the reflectors and painted the light. Well here is how i did it. not too hard. just folded the edges when it got to the edge of the reflector. really looks professional ;) Be sure if you do this mod. There is one tiny screw on the back you have to losen then take the front part off (the chrome trim piece should come along with the clear plastic cover) then you can unscrew 2 more screws on the trim. We learned the hard way.
| Daios | 08-10-2001 05:35 PM |

metoo- wow, that looks really good, nice work! That's a good alternative to dropping 2 g's on JDM HID lights, now I know how I'll do mine

I did it
Just wanted to thank everyone for all the help. It took me forever but I took the amber out and blacked out the lights. It looks phat!

Paint?
If I change to PIAA light bulbs, is there a chance that the black paint would melt? What kinda paint did you guys used?
| aspera | 09-17-2001 04:57 AM |
Aspera is throwing in two pennies. I copied the original thread a while ago. You guys have got to paint the headlight bulb shroud black. It in no way affects the beam pattern, but makes the lights twice as dark when shut off. I ended up using a flat black camo paint. It worked better than the high-temp paint that I bought. The bulb shroud is the little metal piece partially covering the headlight bulb. It takes paint very well. Another thing...cook your lights in the oven for a long time. Unless you crank the heat up, they wont melt. You are more likely to tear them up if they are too cold. Good luck.:)
| Hanzo | 09-17-2001 08:01 AM |
Has anyone try to paint them the same color as the car? it will look like F50 :D

| IMPREZA GUY | 09-18-2001 10:45 AM |
what is better using an oven to heat it up or a hairdryer??? cuz when i get the WRX i don't really wanna crack the housing because i get too impatient.

Diaos,
What is that blue stuff that you used to mask off the signal reflector?
Does anyone know the part # or any more info about this phillips light that looks silver but flashes yellow?
Anyone have pics of this on a white car?
Cowboy up,
Loren

How long and how hot?
How long did you put them in the oven and at what temp?

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees for 5 minutes. Turn the oven down to just a little over the lowest setting (175-225). Put headlight in. Leave in there for approx. 8 minutes. after that, use a flathead screwdriver to pry it apart....it should come right off. oh, and BE CAREFUL not to touch the plastic cover, or else you're risking causing bubbles on it. Good luck!!

If you look at the headlights, closely, the housing is black, rather the chrome. This kinda makes it more "JDM"ish....hehehe.:D

I'm interested in seeing color matched, I HAVE seen black on black already which looked pretty nice but I think if I were to paint mine SRP to match my car it would come out looking fruity somehow. I think I will end up painting mine black soon.
Photoshop anyone?
