I've given up on guessing what will happen to Petter.

I hope Petter actualy wins this rally. Just gotta hope for rain. But even that didn't help this last rally...
But I KNOW that something will happen to his car. Again. Just like every other rally this season. I HATE when they show a Subaru that's not in 1st place on the Eurosport coverage, because you know they're just going to show something going wrong on Petter's car, or Chris Atkinson crashing out as usual.
Would be nice to see Mikko disobeying Ford orders and pushing and fighting Gronholm for the win. Ha.

I'm going. Anyone ever spectated WRC GB? Any advice? (FYI I've been to US Pro rallies and know the basics, but I've never been to WRC).
I guess our plan is to spectate at "Halfway". We'll stay there all day and see the cars go through once in the morning, once in the evening, then move to Millenium Stadium. But, if someone knows better, we could do something else.

I know a few people here have been to Wales Rally before.
I've done 4 events.
Advice?
- Plan ahead. Wake up early.
- Pretend you are camping
- You will only get to see 3 stages a day, maximum.
- Talk to a local, they may know backroads to get to uncrowded spectator pens
-Don't speed or do asshat things on the roads. Cops are thick in Wales during the rally.
-Skip the SSS if at all possible. The real stages are where it's at.
There are 98 entries in this rally, so expect the roads to be crowded.

Shakedown !

from rally-live.com
The shakedown of the Wales Rally GB took place this morning in the Penllergaer Forest, just four kilometres away from the service area.
Under cloudy skies and a temperature of around 10C, the drivers had the opportunity to evaluate the best set-ups for their cars, taking into consideration the predicted rain for tomorrow's leg.
Dani Sordo damaged a suspension on his Xsara after hitting a rock. Kronos had time to repair his car and send him for a final run through the 3.90 km course.
Petter Solberg and Mikko Hirvonen set an identical time to share the best performance of the day. Henning Solberg achieved the third fastest time at the wheel of his Peugeot 307 WRC.
Only a few seconds separated Marcus Gronholm in fourth place and the rest of the top 8: Dani Sordo (5th), Manfred Stohl (6th), Chris Atkinson (7th) and Jari-Matti Latvala (8th).
After the shakedown, the drivers returned to the service area, where the teams will need to prepare the cars for this evening's ceremonial start at the Millenium Stadium.

little known fact--there are 2 Ammerricons entered in Rally GB this year
Doug Shepherd and Pete Gladyz, Impreza Gp N. these guys normally run a FWD Gp5 Dodge Neon with about eleventy-million hp in the Rally America series.
they completed recce in the RHD Subie (or its local rentacar equivalent) "without any issues", so check out the entry list and cheer on some real live US privateers!

I believe they rolled it on either the opening stage (or second, I forget) during the Gorman portion of the rally, then after mending the car together for the Home Depot Center special stage, they had some issues with the in-stadium jump and ultimately killed the car.
Good showing from Petter--up to 2nd overall, and charging.

It was a close battle for supremacy in Resolfen 2, eight drivers finishing the stage within a 15-second gap. Marcus Gronholm and Petter Solberg set an identical time to share the stage victory.
Manfred Stohl lost 3.5 seconds on the stage winning duo. The OMV driver is third in this timed event and also third overall, eight seconds away from Petter Solberg.
Chris Atkinson achieved his best stage result of the race, clinching fourth place, three tenths of a second faster than Dani Sordo. The Kronos driver moved ahead of his teammate Xevi Pons to take sixth position in the race standings. Pons had to settle for ninth place in SS5, 25 seconds slower than Gronholm and Solberg.
Jari-Matti Latvala set the sixth fastest time, followed by Francois Duval and Henning Solberg, both men sharing seventh place with the same stage time.
Mark Higgins is the final driver in the top ten, the British star finishing in front of Harri Rovanpera (11th), Jan Kopecky (12th) and Matthew Wilson (13th).
Andreas Aigner wasn't able to complete the stage, the Red Bull Skoda driver stopped on the road.

Yanks Doug Shepherd and Pete Gladysz broke a driveshaft, busted tires, bent a control arm.....and still finished 38th overall in their GpN Impreza.

Congrats to the "old guys".
Shepherd and Gladyz fell back to 51st after some otherwise unexplainable mechanical failures but still did quite well.

Here are some videos I took:

It was an awesome experience. But, I also have to give props to our US rallies for a few things, because I really think they are almost as fun to watch as a WRC event.

Spectating at Rally Mexico is free, and awesome
Spectating at Rally New Zealand is ~$50 for 3 days, and awesome

Yay, I've started a controversy! First, I really loved Wales Rally GB, so I'm not complaining about a thing. But, my point is, I gush about US Pro rallies almost as much. I guess it made me cherish that we still have a real stage rally scene in the US. Ignoring the glamor and flashbulbs, really my experiences and sensations in both cases are very similar. I can only compare what I've seen: Rim & STPR vs. Wales Rally GB.
"Free roaming spectator locations": Draw.
In both countries, we were penned up behind yellow tape after fighting traffic jams. And, of course, a crowd beat you there and is blocking your camera shot. In US, you pay nothing to stand behind yellow tape. In Wales, you pay 20 pounds (40 bucks) to stand behind yellow tape. Maybe other WRC venues are different, I'm only speaking of Wales.
Driver performance: WRC
The driving was on a different plane, it was jaw-dropping to watch.
Unpredictability/Entertainment factor: Advantage US.
The action is more variable and exciting in the US because you're watching imperfect drivers, with no recce, and sparser notes. That means you see each US driver go a little too fast/slow/wide/tight... and at least one guy goes the wrong way at the junction! 99.9% of the time a WRC driver comes through in the previous guy's tire tracks like a robot... a very cool robot but a predictable one.
Weather:
All rally weather is BAD everywhere (even in L.A. the year I went and people got hypothermia) but the UK has to lose this category - just on principle. Now those Mediterranean WRC rounds - that's a whole different story
Grassroots/underdog factor: Advantage US.
Most of the drivers are ordinary guys (or gals) who just happened to sink more of their mortgage into their hobby. They are totally cool to talk to. Many of the cars are beat up and dirty like any respectable rally car should be, and slower than the average nasiocer's daily driver. By contrast, the WRC cars are way too clean. Chat with the drivers? Not even with the tool who cleans Petter Solberg's firesuit
Driver Drama: Who cares.
If you're into rooting for a particular hero, or the soap operas, then obviously "advantage WRC". Personally, it's lost on me. I don't listen to any of them them and just watch the cars.
Alcohol: Advantage Wales.
Lots of people were casually cracking a beer, which was blowing my mind after the cooler inspections at STPR.
Spectator camaraderie: advantage STPR.
Maybe it's just the forest night-stage scene there that make people expect a more social atmosphere. But everyone chats cheerfully during the day. Then at night, everyone starts yelling to the other side or just tells campfire stories or rally war stories to the people nearby. None of that really happened at Wales Rally GB. People set off their airhorns and cheered for the drivers from their country, but there was no particular socializing or community that I noticed (but granted I've only been once and could be totally off base!). After nightfall in Wales, we were in stadium seating watching the show from the nose bleed seats .
Like I said, the sensations were pretty similar (and pretty awesome) in both cases. In both cases you get awesome cars doing awesome things on slippery roads out in the beautiful countryside. I'm glad we have good stage rally, and I appreciate that we have it MORE now that I know it's basically the same sport as the big boys.
These are all just personal opinions, but they're based on actual first hand experience - so I can't be "wrong" or "naive". But I hope everyone has completely different opinions and starts a little controversy
Third overall is Petter Solberg. The Subaru driver clinched the stage victory in this final timed event. I had a good weekend. Thank you very much to Pirelli and I am looking forward to next year, said Solberg.
