Problems w/ CWest Ver2 Grill Install

Finally got my CWest V2 Grill today from Renick. Before painting, I wanted to make sure it fit okay. Well, it doesn't. None of the holes line up.
Left side:

Right side:

The grill is designed to reuse the push in screws from the stock grill that go into the 2 top left holes and 2 top right holes. If I try real hard, I can get the far left one in, but then I have no hope of getting the other 3 in. Also, the air inlet scoop doesn't fit right.
Has anyone else installed this grill? Is it my Prodrive headlights causing the problem (it shouldn't be since the stock grill fit back in without any problems)? This is the real deal from CWest, complete with japanese instructions.

take out that plate on top of your radiator?
| Egan | 02-13-2003 07:02 PM |
The plate is not interferring at all. The problem is that if I force the grill all the way to the left so that I get one hole to line up and insert the push screw, the right side is no where near the hole and there is a 1/4" gap between the grill and the right light.
As you can see from the pics it is almost as if the grill is not wide enough. The left holes aren't far enough over to the left and the right holes aren't far enough over to the right.
I'm going to Vegas tomorrow and when I get back on Monday I am shipping this thing back to iSR/Renick. Unless anyone else has a better idea. In my frustration, I may have missed something.

If the grill itself fits fine, you could drill new holes.
| Egan | 02-13-2003 07:43 PM |
As you can see from the pics, the holes are only off 1/2 - 3/4 of a diameter, so drilling new holes won't help. They would just end up being too big to hold the push in screws. Besides for $179 it should come ready to install.
I'm going to try sliding the lights in slightly to see if the holes will line up better (the holes are part of the light bracket). But of course then the grill may not fit between the lights. Before this is done I'll probably end up breaking something. :(

I just test fit mine, and its perfect. I have the oem lights.
You definitely should loosen the lights, find a position that can accept the grille, then tighten it again. The 3 piece part has a lot more tolerance to these differences than a 1 piece, so it isn't strange that you weren't seeing it before.
I'm more wondering how to get the 2 bolts to the bottom part  Maybe the Japanese have it easier because they have a smaller bumper beam?

Well, no matter what I do with the lights, the grill won't fit. The grill mounting brackets are part of the lights themselves, so there's not much more I can do.
Even when I got the far left hole to line up, I could not get any of the other three to line up. I was able to get the air duct screwed down. Then I discovered another thing: the hood won't latch down with the grill in place. Granted the grill wasn't 100% secure, but it was where it would be if it was screwed down.
Anyone think I might have gotten a bad grill? I would think these grilles all come out of the same mold, so maybe it's the Prodrive lights. I'm sure it's not just the CWest stuff either. Looks like I'm stuck with the stock grill.

well last resort you can drill new holes in either the grille or the lights and use real nuts + bolts instead of those cheap plastic tabs :)
That is, if you figure out the latch problem ...

that's a defect. return it for a new one.
| bemani | 02-14-2003 11:10 AM |
Its no defect. I met with Egan and tried mine on his car, still wouldn't fit. It is the prodrive lights causing the issue.
| kenchan | 02-14-2003 11:24 AM |
oh i c... then he needs to make a decision then...
| Egan | 02-14-2003 12:43 PM |
Luckily for me Bemani lives about 5 minutes down the road. A quick check indicated his grill wouldn't work either, and we know his works on his WRX. Looks like I'm out of luck.
Thanks again Alan. Hopefully I can join you and Steve on your next drive!
Pam down at Renick (where Bemani and I bought our grilles from) has a WRX with the same lights as me. She's going to try and fit the grill down there. We'll see what she finds out.

Yep, one big piece of FRP.
| Kostamojen | 02-18-2003 01:40 AM |
Well that completely sucks :(
Maybe you can get one without any holes drilled in advance or something along those lines and drill them yourself? Or maybe find out if there is a different one for prodrive lights? Sucks...

Sorry if this is a stupid response, but what about zip tying it into place? I see where the holes are, and you could probably just use some zip ties to make up for the 1/2 to 1/4" - no?
(I haven't looked that closely at what you are doing, so forgive me is this is a really dumb suggestion - just trying to help!)
Grill should fit fine with the JDM lights, right?
Leo, all the pics I have seen of this grill show it on a Rex w/ the STi lights, so I would think they would fit.

The grill is super tight between the two lights, plus as I mentioned earlier, the hood won't latch with the grill in place. It's almost as if I need to push the lights outboard in order for the grill to fit between them, but I need to push it inboard for the holes to line up.
Pam is going to try a grill/Prodrive install down at Renick and see what happens.

I don't know if this helps at all, but mine fits better with the snorkel under the grill peice.
My main concern is that the grill does not sit flush with the hood. It sticks out like an inch in front of the hood. In all the pictures I've seen it sits flush with the hood, although all the pictures I've seen have been with the c-west hood. Do you guys think that it is designed for the c-west hood specifically?

So I take it that you can use the grill without the c-west badge? That would be a good thing. Did you have to do anything special for that to work?
| Egan | 02-20-2003 11:35 AM |
It doesn't come with a badge. Just a blank, flat area where the badge is in that picture.
| bemani | 02-20-2003 11:50 AM |
sure it does, its in the bag with the screws and nuts. you should ask renick subaru if you don't have it.
| Egan | 02-20-2003 12:29 PM |
Nope, mine only had a big CWest sticker which is too big for the badge area. I put mine on my toolbox with the other 25 stickers I have from WRX vendors. :)
Of course since I'll probably have to send my grill back, I don't really need the badge anyway. :(

Hopefully I'm slipping it in with a batch of WRB parts from one of the vendors down on the Bay Area. Pretty decent price if it works out ~$40
Hey, have you test fitted and closed the hood??? Mine doesn't sit flush with the hood like the one in the picture....

Mind if I stick my grille to be painted with yours? When are you painting it?
It sticks out maybe about 1/2 cm, not the 1 in like you say. But if you look at the design of the grille, the area around the screen does come out a little. You can adjust the 2 rubber stopper in the engine bay to make the hood seal better.
The stock one doesn't match the hood line too I just notice ... it is recessed a bit inside.
I still can't figure out how to screw the bottom to the bumper. Probably have to zip tie it.

If I can work it out, it will be going to Masters I think. They are down in Hayward. I don't know, though, I am going to have to re-test fit it this weekend to see how bad it is. I must be doing something wrong because when I close my hood it is WAY noticable that it sticks out too far. I am talking with the vendor to see if I got a defect or there are multiple models...

I've been wanting to go to those, but I usually don't get out of Santa Clara until 10:30 or so and that puts me in Sac after 12:30. Plus the Rex is sitting in the garage at home.
One of these weeks I'll make it. Plus we need to do another full blown meet. The last one I was at was in November.

Well, no matter what I do the grill and holes won't line up. It's like the grill is deformed in its shape. It needs to have the center pushed in. I'm curious to see Ryball and Bemeni's completed installs. Anyways, I got the hood to close with the grill in place. I had to take the air scoop off (kinda defeats the purpose of this grill).

except the right side where it is sticking out a bit more than the left side, looks pretty good to me
| Egan | 02-22-2003 01:28 PM |
Ya Steve, it is almost too wide. It barely fits between the lights. But based on where the holes line up, it needs to be wider, which can't happen.
Pam from iSR/Renick is aware of the problem. She was going to test fit their last grill on a WRX with the Prodrive lights, but I haven't heard back yet. Regardless of what she finds, this grill has to go back.

I'm sorry, my car is put away for the winter and where I store it I don't have full time access. (Located about 20 miles from where I live) I went to test fit it and didn't think to bring my digital. But I can tell you everything looked and fit perfect. One thing I did notice is that on the passenger side, on the second hole in from the headlight the predrilled hole is a few cm off. No big deal though. Here's a pic.
