Prodrive Subaru's Options for '04 w/o RB? part 1

cvalle-sd 11-17-2003 09:32 AM

Prodrive Subaru's Options for '04 w/o RB?
What are they gonna do now? McRae perhaps? One more season from Tommi? This RB thing has got to be a doubly harsh blow, with Richard being so familiar to the team, and them certainly planning their season around him and Petter. I don't suppose they have a lot of options now.
 :(
johnfelstead 11-17-2003 09:56 AM

There will be lots of speculation surrounding the obvious posible candidates. Prodrive need to be given time to digest the impact of losing Richard this season, i am sure they will make a good choice.

We just have to sit back and wait to see what happens, it's such a shame this is the scenario as Petter/Richard was a great combination.

It goes without saying that we hope Richard is fully recovered quickly and takes up his seat with Subaru in 2005.
mykrrrr 11-17-2003 10:18 AM

I'd love to see Tommi stay or for Colin to join back w/SWRT.

Tommi seemed to be getting to grips w/the car finally and I think if Colin drives a bit more cautiously he'd be able to keep it together.

I definitely agree w/JF, it's a great loss for '04 and the Petter/Richard combo was gonna be a great one.

Godspeed on a full recovery RB.

DonA 11-17-2003 10:50 AM

Petter Solberg respects Colin very much and has always said how much he enjoyed having him as a teammate. (They drove together with Ford during the 1999 season)

I think it should still be a promising season for the SWRT

you have to feel for Richard though he is was without a doubt on top of his game :(
Lightning Jack 11-17-2003 10:58 AM

The light will shine on Colin...:)
ShockWave 11-17-2003 11:19 AM

Colin seems the obvious choice (Tommi has confirmed he will stay retired), but it may depend on finances. No idea what kind of money is locked for Burns. If he's entitled to a big payment regardless of becoming ill, they may not be able to afford Colin. Course, Colin could also drop his price for a one year shot at a top team to set up for something better in 2005. Personally, I think it's more likely we'll see Prodrive sign an up and coming driver out of the Junior series.

As for Burns, I really hope he recovers well and fully! His consistant finishes will be a great for locking up that manufacturer's title.
Lightning Jack 11-17-2003 11:30 AM

If u don't work u shouldn't be getting pay
StuBeck 11-17-2003 11:34 AM

I'm sure they have an injury clause in the contract that allows you to be paid if you get injured, we just need to find out if Burn's had such a clause that was effective before his season started.
dwx 11-17-2003 11:54 AM

I think Colin McRae would take less money to drive with Subaru this year and seems like the obvious choice at this point.
Sergeant_V 11-17-2003 01:11 PM

The folks at Rallyforum.com speculate that Markko will move to Subaru should Ford pull out of the WRC. Burn's illness is devastating news. I hope he recovers soon.

Abel
lark6 11-17-2003 02:06 PM

Would Harri Rovanpera be an option? Rally-live.com reports that Peugeot is moving to make Freddy Loix the second driver alongside Gronholm, leaving Rovanpera out in the cold.

Ed
Lou 11-17-2003 02:15 PM

The new two driver only rule may help Subaru now since there are some quality drivers looking for contracts. World class guys like Colin, if he is willing, and Harri Rovanpera would make great additions. I think if we can get Markko the team would be unstoppable.

Markko and Petter, together again. That's a great combo.:)

Get well, RB!:(
WRXPRESS 11-17-2003 02:42 PM

Wow , if we get Markko that would be amazing...
cvalle-sd 11-17-2003 02:56 PM

-Except that Ford pulling out would be devastating in and of itself. I'd like to see a strong Prodrive team, but without strong competition, there's not much worth winning.
cwhalgren 11-17-2003 03:21 PM

A bit OT, but since we are speculating on teams and competion for Prodrive/Subaru - does anyone know what Mistubishi's intentions are? I thought they were only taking one year off. That's obviously not the case, so does anyone know if they have a schedule to get back in the WRC?

------------
I now see that Mitsu is going to have two cars at all 16 rounds next year... thanks

They have a limited program (IIRC) with some new drivers, but they'll be in many of the WRC events. I think Rally-Live or WRC.com has the poop on that

They announced a couple weeks ago that their main driver will be Panizzi, and then they have 3 other drivers that will rotate and do different rallies depending on surface and whatnot.
shrieden 11-17-2003 04:44 PM

Come back Colin, come back...............
Night Kid 11-17-2003 05:23 PM

wow, Petter + Markko would be real nice!!
Colin McRae wouldnt be so bad either
Lightning Jack 11-17-2003 05:48 PM

Markko??!! hell yeah Markko would take be greatful of having a car that doens't break down all the time.
T-WREXX 11-17-2003 06:13 PM

I had no idea Richard wasn't going to be able to compete with Subaru next year?! :(

I hope he recovers fast, I was really looking forward to Petter and Richard tearing up the WRC. On the positive side if we can somehow get Colin to drive for us I see very big things happening for Subaru. Come back Colin, you know what team you loved the best, SUBARU!!
3:15wrx 11-17-2003 06:30 PM

I know it will be a big-name WRC driver who gets the second 555-Subaru car, but I can't help hoping Toshi Arai gets at least a chance in the big dance. He has had great results with G-N.

Also, poor Richard. Astrocytoma is one of the worst types of cancers to get. Recoveries are extremely rare. I hope he beats the odds.
Patrick L 11-17-2003 07:47 PM

They will probably go with Colin. There was talk about this before if Richard could not drive that David Lapworth would go with Colin if he wanted to drive for Subaru.
Tensen 11-17-2003 07:49 PM

My vote....David Higgins (no idea if hes even elligible, but he is my choice!
MattDell 11-17-2003 09:31 PM

This could be a wild shot, but what is Subaru doing with Ramana Lagemann?

-Matt
driver8 11-17-2003 10:31 PM

Petter and Marko - that would be a dream team. two guys that are definitely on there way up.
FUNKED1 11-18-2003 12:45 AM

Mrtin is great but if Ford withdrew it would be very very bad for the sport.

I'm hoping for Colin.
meebs 11-18-2003 12:54 AM

It feels like such a sure thing... McRae, home again.
eastbaysubaru 11-18-2003 01:21 AM

I REALLY hope Ford doesn't pull out of the series. It's great seeing an American brand in the series. I hope they get it together and Malcolm gets another couple years with Ford.

Impreza01 11-18-2003 02:13 AM

Seeing how McRae is the obvious choice, I find it ironic of the possibilites of all the English-ex-WRC-champion-using-Subaru-cars coming back.
occytron wrc 11-18-2003 07:28 AM

McRae has signed with Nissan to run the Dakar Rally shich starts in early January and runs a little under three weeks so it will be interesting to see if Subaru goes with him and if he can be ready in time for Monte Carlo....
Kilika2k 11-18-2003 07:51 AM

The Paris-Dakar Rally will end on Sunday, the 18th of January. Monte Carlo will start on the week of the 19th. That doesn't leave much time for testing if any. I guess if Colin does sign, they'll do some testing in December.

But yeah, so much speculation! This must be the busiest off-season for the WRC ever! Maybe Tommi should postpone his retirement just for one rally, it'd be nice for him to leave after Monte Carlo where he does so well. Then Colin can just finish the rest of the season without affecting his Dakar chances.
occytron wrc 11-18-2003 08:00 AM

That would be cool wouldn't it? Unfortunatly he has confirmed that he is still "retired". Oh Well.

Yeah, its kinda American. They don't use M-Sport's program in any of their US marketing (hello, sell Focus SVTs! ), and the whole WRC effort comes under the umbrella of Ford Europe, which is obviously owned by "our" Ford, but really is more of a separate company without much overlap of the Ford products we'll ever see. Thy don't move a lot of Exploders, F150s or SVT Cobras, and we'll never get the Focus RS or Ka, or new Contour..or whatever they're calling it.

/OT!

Just picking a nit, but McRae is not English. As much as WE think of "Great Britain" as a single country, the folks who live there think of it as four.

That's why they made such a big deal about Burns being the "First ENGLISH" World Rally Champ.

The true test is this: What would McRae do if you called him "English" to his face?

I STOLE THIS FROM A RALLY WEBSITE.......

Brain tumor sidelines Burns

Richard Burns has been diagnosed as having a brain tumour and will not compete in next year's World Rally Championship.

Latest News

Burns suffered a blackout at the wheel of his car ahead of the Wales Rally GB, and tests have revealed he has a condition known as Astrocytoma.

He will undergo radiotherapy, and doctors are confident this will prove successful, but he will be unable to compete in next season's championship.

The 32-year-old Briton was due to re-join Subaru next season, the team he won the World Championship with in 2001.

"The doctors have advised that I am unable to get back in a rally car for the 2004 championship and I have to accept that," Burns told the BBC.

"I'm obviously extremely disappointed but I am feeling very positive and I am determined to focus all of my efforts on getting back to full fitness as soon as I can.

"I would really like to thank everyone for their continued support - it means a lot to me.

"My fans, the Peugeot WRC team and also everyone at Prodrive and Subaru have all been tremendous."

David Lapworth, Subaru team principal, said: "We are very concerned at this news about Richard.

"There will always be future rallies and future championships, but for now Richard needs to put his own health first. Richard will always be welcome at Subaru and we hope that he may again, when fully recovered, work with us once more.

Lapworth would not be drawn on a replacement for Burns for next season.

"We have not yet had much time to consider all the alternative driver options for next year, but we hope to make an announcement in the coming weeks," he said.

I was thinking the same thing! Markko is a strong driver, but those Fords just don't seem to hold together.

I dunno, I kind of fancy the idea of one young driver and one older, more experienced hand. Petter/Colin could be killer...

*runs off to apply for newly vacant driver position* Will drive for food!
jesse370 11-18-2003 06:45 PM

I really hope burnsie can come back heathly and be able to race in the future BUT I think colin would be a much better team player then burnsie. I think that burns could give damn about peter or how his car is setup. Colin has had his share of bad luck in the last few years but he is the guy that brought subaru a manfu title.
Cigar2 11-18-2003 07:05 PM

I've wondering of late about what's going to happen for Rally of Mexico and Subaru's plans for it.
Before what has happen to Richard happen and that thought is.
Would Subaru think about running a third car or even a fourth car by using the U.S.A. operation to run to crew and run those cars?
And have Ramana Lagemann and Pat Richards driving them has a purely PR type of move?

Just a wild ideal.

Has for who should Subaru get to replace Richard. Well I would say it is most likely going to be Colin since whether Ford is in or out of the championship.
And thus leaving where Markko may or may not be going in question.
mlambert 11-19-2003 05:53 AM

If Ford dropped outa wrc it would get very boring for me, no markko ford to cheer for.
T-WREXX 11-19-2003 11:38 AM

The way drivers change teams so often, I just hope Petter stays with Subaru for a long time. He has a lot more driver's championships to win with us. It would be nice to see some true loyalties develop, like if you hear a drivers name you automatically think of the car he drives. Like Petter with Subaru, Gronholm with Peugeot, Markko with Ford, Alister McRae with Mitsu, etc.
rogue 11-19-2003 02:07 PM

Like Tommi with Mitsubishi? :)

I like that the teams can move around, but yeah... would be nice to see some more loyalty.

I'm sure it's not the drivers' fault, with teams constantly dropping out and reworking and coming back. Certainly we're running short on works teams now, though. No Hyundai, maybe no Ford, no Mitsu last year... bleah. More competition is GOOD!
sha_zapple 11-20-2003 09:46 AM

What about Rovanperra? He is no longer driving for Peugeot? Im not so sure we would want him though, we seem to be contracting too many Peugeto dropouts!
cvalle-sd 11-20-2003 10:17 AM

From Autosport

Subaru will welcome Burns back
No comments from team on possible replacement
Burns may still drive a Subaru in the future

Subaru has maintained that it will welcome Richard Burns back to drive in the World Rally Championship once the Englishman is fit again. This is according to a story in the latest issue of AUTOSPORT Magazine.

Burns was due to join the Banbury-based outfit for next season but has now been ruled out of 2004 competition following his diagnosis with a brain tumour.

Richard will always be welcome at Subaru, said team principal David Lapworth. And we hope that he may again, when fully recovered, work with us once more.

The team has offered to do what it can to help Richard back to health and return as one of the leading drivers in the world championship.

Subaru will need to find a replacement for next year, which begins in Monte Carlo on January 23rd, but say they aren't rushing into a decision.

Right now people are taking in the news about Richard, said team manager Paul Howarth. We haven't really started talking about names of who might drive for the team next year.

But Howarth did say that Subaru will be looking for a driver that can compete on all rallies, rather than rotating the drive among specialists: I don't think the two-driver thing works. We need drivers to be competing all the time to retain that competitive edge.

Leading possibilities to replace Burns could be Colin McRae (although he says he's in temporary retirement), Markko Martin (but only if Ford don't compete next year) or Harri Rovanpera, who has been dropped by Peugeot.

>I love Prodrive - everything I've seen them do, on and off the >stages/track is just plain classy.
jesse370 11-20-2003 10:45 AM

I would much rather have colin in a subie then harri. I was never impressed with him. Even though colin would bend quite a few subies I think the rallies that he finishes will be higher in the points then harri. There is a reason he was dropped from the pug team. He is slow.

haha, yeah Rogue, like Tommi w/ Mitsu

I guess a driver will always be most associated with the team he won the most with. So that's a perfect reason for Colin to come back to Subaru, right?!! :D
