First, and only, real Snow Rally of the year!

Can't wait to see how Patrick Richard does, I hope he owns the whole damn thing!!! With the Canadian Rally Championship having several snow rallies, I think he's well suited for this one!
Even you American guys should be cheering for Pat, it ups the chances of having a rally here in North America hugely!!! It's alot shorter trip up to Canada to see a WRC event than across the pond!

Does anyone know if Radstrom has been hired by a manufacturer for this race? I wouldnt be surprised to see him finish in the top 5 if he's driving for one of the big boys.

Pat's co-driver (Martin Headland) is out. He's OK but too sore to compete in the rally after an accident during Recce. Pat lost the chance to recce some stages and will be using old notes from someone else for the lost stages (that's not going to help much).
Swedish co-driver Mikael Johansson is taking over for Martin for this event (and that's not going help much either).
Looks like Pat's up against it even before the event starts.

Former world rally champion Tommi Makinen had a near miss with a spectator during a trial run for the Swedish Rally on Thursday.
The Subaru driver was angered by the incident ahead of this weekend's race.
"The biggest drama was having to brake from sixth gear when a stupid spectator was in the middle of the road," said Makinen.

WRC Dashboard

Has anyone seen the new dashboard on WRC.com? That thing is awesome. Along with the horrible "Rally Radio" announcers, you can really view the rally in real time.
Duval really screwed things up on SS5... he kept Mak, Sol, Rov, Gron, and a few others back at least 10 mins on the stage. I wonder what they're going to do for their times?

Any clue what happened to Solberg?? He seems down there a bit...Mcrae is in the same boat...geesh..

What happened on SS5? Makinen dropped from 2nd to 8th.
| Idjiit | 02-07-2003 10:37 AM |
Francois Duval was blocking the road, it sound like the stag will be cancelled.
The question I have is what is up with Petter? He was 45 seconds behind at the first checkpoint, but that was before he got the news that Duval crashed out... Hmm.
Petter Solberg (Subaru), 11th, +1m08.6s: "I'm not very happy at all. The car isn't giving me the proper feeling and I just don't have the confidence to push hard. It's difficult to describe, but the handling feels a bit nervous. I think we can fix it by changing the differential settings, so hopefully things will be better this afternoon
hey if the car feels nervous...
best to slow down a tick rather than ball it up...!!

Not totally on-topic, but did anyone else notice this bit in the Autoweek interview with Gronholm?
-----------------
"... The oft-hyped animosity between the pair is not as far from the truth as the Peugeot PR machine would have the world believe. Gronholm has taken to calling Burns Rubens, alluding that he is the Schumacher of the team and Burns is Barrichello. "

Pat was just interviewed on Rally Radio. Sounds like he is driving with his arm in plaster from the injuries he had in his recee acident. He had no brakes through the last stage, the longest stage he was stuck behind a car for 25Km's after catching him, so he is having a tough time of it.
He says he will be trying to set some good times tonight/tomorrow as he feels he hasnt set a representative time yet.

Looks like Tommi finished the day 38 seconds out of first. It'll be tough to make that up tomorrow on so few stages, but a second place would certainly be just fine.

Looks like Arai and Blomqvist are 1/2 in the "Production WRC" standings, although they are 3rd and 7th in GrpN for the event. Richard is 23rd in GrpN and 11th in the PWRC standings.
I think Gronholm is a lock. Makinen has a decent margin over Burns for second, he should drive consistently and wrap up the 2nd place finish. Solberg and McRae probably have the best battle for 5th/6th.

Congratulations to Patric, I think under the circumstances he had an outstanding drive. What logic you use to say that RallyDriver, i just dont get?
Pat drove most of the rally route without a recce after his crash, head on with a Land Rover at 50km/h. He had to find another codriver to replace Martin at short notice, this guy had to translate and then convert his 2002 notes to Pats system.
Pat then drove the event injured, with no real recce, a new foreign language speeking codriver, a new car etc and just missed out on scoring a championship point, overhauling 2 places today and setting some great stage times.
Thats forgeting his problems yesterday with the brakes and catching drivers on stage.
Well done Pat, good luck with the rest of the year.

Most of Richard's results have been in the middle of PWRC and top 2/3rd of the GrpN overall results. He may be able to do a little better with his regular co-driver and his arm not in a cast... Arai was leading PWRC by alot (3rd in GrpN overall) but went out on the 16th stage? I'm sure he has the most well prepped Subaru out there.
Looks like Makinen in second and Solberg in sixth. I'll take that over two DNFs any day.

Rallydriver, you have 9-10 positions back to front. Patrick finished 9th.
Good luck to your "buddies", that doesnt mean you should disrespect the job Patrick did, he drove a great rally, there is a lot more to come from him.

Be reasonable. It's his second WRC rally, and the first (WRC) event on snow and ice. I think it was an admirable effort given the circumstances (injuries, co-driver, notes).
He has much more experience on gravel. I expect him to do very well in New Zealand.

Patrick did very well in his first outing in Sweden, Congratulations.
Well, I celebrate Janusz Kulig's victory in PCWRC. He visited our shores last year and took second overall in Cherokee Trails driving the same car (group N). Too bad its not a Subie, but they have to resolve their reliability issues. Arai blew his engine about 70 KM before finish.

Agreed 100 percent. A decent result for SWRT for sure. Seemed both cars ran great and as Petter said, if he got the set-up right the first two days, who knows what the results might have been.

Petter was probably too distracted by all the Norweegian fans. BTW Richard Burns and a handfull of other drivers used the same excuse.
I would absolutly love for Subaru to win, but... I don't know what gives, they never seem to have it right. Maybe they should follow Ford and get rid of Pirelli tires. After Ford's switch to Michelin Marko Martin is doing terrific given the car he is driving...

Not quite ;)
SS8 was the stage where Rovanpera collided with Pykalisto's stricken car, and the two blocked the road. Not many people got through before the accident, so they ended up canning the stage and giving everybody else the same time.
It was a nice thought though :)

It looks like Patrick might score a point in Production after all. Technical Inspection after the rally questioned flywheel on Kulig's car, which appeared to have a correct weight and size, however it's manufacturing process is questionable. FIA decision is pending. So my joy might have been premature. Boy, sometimes it is hard to be Polish:confused:

Tommi in 2nd! Both cars finishing! I know it's early but I think Burns is going to take the season. The new points system rewards consistency.

I think the Championship will be closer this year, but ultimately I still think it will be Gronholm. He's got the right car, the right talent, and a boatload of confidence.
Oh, and Burns chasing him the entire time. :p
