Rally & Rally X School, Feb 26-27 Ridgecrest, Ca.
The best bang for the buck going. Ask those who have attended. CRS instructors. Learn about rally and rally x. It's just great for volunteers and fans as well.

Sticky please.

Ooops 25th- 26th.
isburns 12-15-2004 08:12 PM

I was thinking about posting this same topic. I'll be going, not sure if I'll be driving or flying yet. If anyone wants to caravan or catch a ride (if I drive), I'll be heading out from Tucson.

I'm torn on whether to do the co-driving or driving breakout sessions. I figure I'll be competing in rallies faster if I go the co-driver route first, but my real passion is getting behind the wheel. Considering doing the co-driver at Ridgecrest and the driver one at Thunderhill, if it runs this year...

And for those of us going, could everyone please spend the time to mail or fax in the entry form in advance for this one.

The Sept. one last year was canned due to a lack of pre-entries.

We should probably try to get this one stickied in SCIC as well.

Good Course
I attended the CRS school before I started co-driving. That and all of the reading I did before my first event saved Victor and I from many costly mistakes (road points are bad mmmmkay) ;)

Yup, it's only $95 for both days and odds are, you'll be able to borrow a helmet... :)
dorrington 12-19-2004 03:27 PM

i think I can borrow a helmet from a buddy who races his R6...

would a motorcycle (M2000) helmet be legal for this?

Getting a set of stock wheels with RE-92's when I get back home...will they fare okay in this or should I look for a cheaper set of wheels with decent winter or dirt tires?

I won several events in the SS4 class this past season with my wagon on RE-92's - believe it or not, they make decent RallyX tires. Most winter or dirt tires will bump you into the "Rally" class which means you're then facing some rally-prepped cars instead of mainly other daily-driver WRX's.

Motorcycle helmets are usually allowed but I'd double check with the promoter.
dorrington 12-20-2004 04:06 PM

would I be in rally prepared if I have engine mods (like VF34)?
MarkA 12-20-2004 04:15 PM

No, you will run in Street Mod class (SM4).

The three basic classes are:
Street Stock - Street tires and the only allowed mods. are to the catback the ECU.
Street Modified - Street tires and no limit on car mods.
Rally/Open - Rally tires and no rules on car mods.

The classes ran at CRS RallyX's are well-explained on this page: http://www.sfrscca.org/RallyX/rallyx_faq.htm#Classes
recce02 12-29-2004 01:21 AM

I highly reccomend the school if you would like to get involved with rallying. Some of The Gravel Crew Race team goes out there and teaches the class. It is very informative and fun, but you should pre register so that the class does not get cancelled, this is the only school for so-cal this year do to the lack of entries in the last class.

Rally School Feb 26-27 in Ridgecrest, CA
We are pleased to invite you to the 10th presentation of the CRS Rally School on February 26 in Ridgecrest California. There will be a CRS RallyX championship points event the following day, Sunday February 27.

This daylong event that covers all elements of rally preparation and competition. Along with the class room sessions, an emphasis is placed on in-the-seat time for both drivers and co-drivers on practice courses designed to give them the "feel" of real competition. Many of the west's top rally teams have taken part in the school.

This is a great opportunity to show a new co-driver, service crew member, or spouse what rally is all about. There is no one involved in the sport that will not benefit from this workshop.

The $80 per person entry includes a "working sack lunch" Saturday afternoon and a delicious Mexican buffet Saturday night. No vehicle is needed to take part in the classroom portions of the course. Any reasonable street automobile (except convertibles) are acceptable for the drivers practice sessions. These sessions are held on the same level smooth dirt parking lot as the Sunday RallyCross. Experienced Drivers will ride along with you to show you how to use the practice area. Two or more students may share one car. A helmet with a Snell 90 or newer sticker is required for the driver's practice. A few loaner helmets are available. No helmets are required for the co-driver practice sessions.

For complete details visit the school's web site at http://www.rallyusa.com/CRS%20School/crs_school.html or contact Ray or Donna Hocker at 760-375-3289.
dorrington 12-30-2004 07:25 PM

I'm gonna sign up next week...is that too late? I'm just on the east coast right now and need to deposit some paychecks!

RacingBlue...you wanna do a lil' caravan thing up there? I'll probably drag my GF along, figure itd be fun to go along with somebody
ChrisL2 12-30-2004 07:32 PM

I should have attended when I lived in that area. Too bad I will not be able to attend it. Maybe another time. It is a short drive (relatively) from Tucson anyways.
I'm gonna sign up next week...is that too late? I'm just on the east coast right now and need to deposit some paychecks!
Technically, you have until Feb. 20th as per the entry form to enter but myself and others are encouraging early entry to ensure the event has enough participants to happen.

I'm mailing in my RallyX entry next week.
isburns 01-05-2005 02:46 PM

ChrisL2,
Now that I got my RS, I'm definately going to drive up in February rather than fly and rent a car. If you want to caravan let me know.

I'm trying to get involved as quickly as possible, so I actually signed up for the Co-driving school seeing as I don't have a rally car yet, but I'm doing the rally-x the next day as well. Still means I gotta buy a helmet and suit before I can get seat time at an event though.

Shea
platypus 01-28-2005 05:47 PM

hmm, I'll have to see if the car is together and running that weekend. Might be a good chance for a little seat time.
slowmike 01-30-2005 04:34 PM

Most fun you can have with your pants on. Bring a helmet and a car, any car, rent a car if you have to. I'm gonna bring The Mad Wagon.
MarkA 02-14-2005 03:23 PM

Still time and spaces left to sign up.
slorex 02-16-2005 12:49 PM

Is this the kind of thing that will reak havoc on the cars? I would like to go but I don't want to destroy my brand new WRX, taking it over jumps and what not. Is there anything to crash into other than cones? or will it void my warranty?
MarkA 02-16-2005 01:54 PM

No jumps or any other immovable objects its just a dirt field with a course laid out. Pump up your tire pressures so you dont roll one off the bead and youll be fine. Pics from last year are here: http://www.pbase.com/token/crs_sunday&page=all

Warranty wise What Rally? I dont know anything about a Rally I was just driving down a dirt road

Get the idea ;)
RacingBlue 02-17-2005 06:52 AM

Just a few spots left, if your interested, don't snooze and sign up.

Hopefully i'll get some decent shots. also have a camcorder mounted to the roof rack of my wagon. Guess we'll see if i get some decent video. fish eye lens might make the video look interesting.
isburns 02-25-2005 02:53 PM

thats pretty sweet, the fish eye will probably make for interesting footage...

Man, I gotta drive 550 miles tonight after work to get there... thats gonna be totally awesome'

From special stages:

"Ramada Express 2004 Video -- Looks Great!"

Last night after the Ridgecrest Rally School (70 or 80 outstanding students, methinks), Ray showed the Green Light video production of the 2004 Ramada Express International Rally.

It was just what we've come to expect from great coverage: a nice blend of action shots, in-car shots, and talking heads; a nice blend of class leaders, overall leaders, and others; enough establishing shots to give you a sense of the event, but not so many that you feel cheated out of real action; and Chris & Chrissie's dramatic Stage 1 climax.

I understand they have one more minor edit cycle to complete before it'll be available but from what I've seen so far, everyone will want this in their personal video collection.

Rally on!

John
isburns 02-28-2005 04:58 PM

Yea, a thumbs up on the Ramada video, it looked good.

The rally school prooved to be very informative from the co-driver perspective, I learned a lot and will be keeping the notes they handed out for reference for a long time methinks. Wish I could have done the driver session, but I figure I need every credential I can get if I want to start co-driving this year.

The rally-x on Sunday was also a blast. There were boat loads of subies there all looking quite nice, with a big presence by the gravel crew.

This was my first rally-x and I didn't have the benefit of the driver training the day before, but I'm still pretty happy with my results. You can see them at http://californiarallyseries.com/results05_files/Ridgecrest_RX_2005.htm, I'm car # 55. Wish I could have improved my 3rd run as much as my 2nd, though.

I didn't have the opportunity to take too many pictures, but certainly saw a lot of others snapping away, hopefully some of those will make their way back here.

And it was worth the 550 mile drive

How'd the video turn out Brian? I just noticed you beat me by a tenth of a second overall :furious:

got some pics and the video actually came out pretty good. better than my driving! at least i have proof of crappy track layout in run 2. you can clearly see that the track was messed up and caused my 4 second penalty! ha. i'm still upset about that. but whatever. awesome weekend. i'm definately hooked on rallyX now.
slowmike 02-28-2005 10:23 PM

Track was not "messed up". They never changed the course just the direction.
isburns 02-28-2005 10:44 PM

From the video it looks like he just cut one of the turns and went inside of the cones, but I'm not sure why. I noticed that there were tracks he ended up following, I wonder if someone else did it before him too?

I liked running the course the direction of runs 2 and 3 more than the direction in 1. Plus, it seemed the end of the first run was becoming way more rutted with the 4wd cars then it was as the beginning of the second and third runs. I noticed one car almost get stuck in one of the ruts- when walking the course you could see where the car had gotten high-centered on the ruts. A few others went up on 1 wheel when bouncing through the ruts sideways too. Glad I went near the beginning and didn't have to drive through those things.
slowmike 02-28-2005 10:54 PM

I liked the way the layed the track out. The corners tightened when you run one direction and they open in the other, so yes it was easier on the second run. I had the unfortunate pleasure of popping a bead on my third run in one of those deep ruts. Gotta get me some of those Michelins
humara 03-01-2005 01:14 AM

tracked track
I also liked the course layout. i didn't say "they" changed the layout. just by the end of the 2nd run, the track was so torn up, and so many people clipped that corner that by the time I got on the track, it was virtually impossible to see the right line before it was too late. i dont know if you noticed but there were about 6 or 7 people at the end of that run that did the same thing i did. its not worth getting into since I didn't have competitve times anyway, but it was frustrating.

did anyone see that pic of terry's white STI? his front tire is off the rim yet he still managed to pull an 87 or so on that run. damn impressive

http://lemonchicken.com/gallery/tire/IMG_1022
MarkA 03-01-2005 02:03 PM

I hate to throw anymore fuel on the fire but in your .gif vidcaps of the cones in question, on the part labeled, where is the line, you can clearly see the next set of cones. You can even see them entering the frame on the one fork in the road.

It would appear to me that you simply might just not be looking far enough up the course making the common beginner mistake of driving at a point just over the end of your hood.

At least this year, the cones were only 1 second per cone as opposed to 3 per cone like at other venues and in past years. Now that wouldve really hurt;)
humara 03-01-2005 02:35 PM

no fire
you can't throw any fuel here! there's no fire.
i know i'm a beginner. :)

anyway, that event was great. and i'll have other rallyX events to vindicate myself! or at least practice and get better.

any other pics posted anywhere?

i've been adding more pics to my gallery, but of the 500 pics taken, many look the same and aren't always interesting.

Unfortunately, not many pics yet.

Although, if you have any of a red Ford Probe, I know Id find those interesting. ;)

You may want to post that youve got some pics in this thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=725065 also as theyre fishing for pics as well.
Porsche914boxer4 03-01-2005 05:57 PM

yes, humara, please post pics of the white/pink GC8 with the male driver (me!).

Thanks!!
hoche 03-01-2005 08:30 PM

I was a conechaser during those runs when everyone went the wrong way. What happened was that a car oversteered coming out of the previous turn and ended up almost at a stop on the inside of those cones. The driver decided that rather than back up, he'd just keep going, probably not realizing that would be an instant DNF. In doing so, he left fresh tracks.

The next driver came around and followed his tracks, along the wrong route. This driver also left tracks, strengthening the trail.

The next two drivers just followed the fresh tracks. It wasn't until the fifth car came along (someone I recognized as a regular rallycrosser) that someone figured out that the recent tracks were incorrect. After that car laid down new tracks in the original route, no one else had a problem.

Not once were any of the cones touched or moved. At the end of the session, the cone-chaser for that area and Ray Hocker and myself had a short discussion about it. Since the cones hadn't been moved and since everyone had had a chance to walk and memorize the course, there really was only one conclusion: driver error.

So...sorry. Chalk it up as a learning experience, and come back and try again! I hope you all still had a lot of fun and learned a lot.

Oh, and Mark...next time I go up against you, remind me to run a car with non-blown shocks and rally tires.
