Replica rear apron doesn't fit - how did you fix it?

So I have my rear apron on and one of them fits a lot better than the other. Like Dieselclown, one of my apron's corners doesn't mold perfectly to the bumper. I don't have any adhesive strong enough to bond the corner to the bumper either.
What have you guys done to get it to fit (other than purchasing the JDM apron)? What adhesives out there is strong enough to bond the corners to the bumper (permanently)?
I've also had the idea of using a thin screw to just BOLT the corner to the bumper and just paint the head of the bolt. I know it'll look GHETTO but at least it'll ensure that the corner is molded to the bumper.
Help anyone, please!

I used all sorts of adhesives and nothing was strong enough to bond to the bumper.
Right now, it looks exactly like this on my right corner.

I've heard of others using a heat gun to heat up the part which will allow me to mold it better. Stupid question, but what is a heat gun? I don't think I've ever seen one before. Is that like a high powered hair dryer? Would I have to heat it up detached from the bumper first before trying to mold it again?

i got the same problem..........
i was using 3M tape first...but it came back out.......
what i did was i took the lip out.....took out those tape.....sand the part where you put those tape on then clean it.
then I used a little bit of paint thinner on the lip until they dry out i then put the 3M tape on........after you finish......apply a little bit thinner on the bumper where the tape will stick...(but not too much that could clean out your clear coat and paint) then stick it back on......
that way those thinner will make the tape stick way harder on the bumper and the lip..........

i held my lip down with clear silicon. 3m tape just wasn't holding.
i held my lip down with clear silicon. 3m tape just wasn't holding.
Clear silicon? Is that very strong? Does it bond quickly? The molding goo that came with the lip works nicely but there's just not enough of it. The 3M tape I got was the strongest at Home Depot but that doesn't seem to hold as well.
I was thinking of placing an electric heater at each corner of my rear bumper to heat up the apron but I don't think that alone would mold the tips of the corners to the bumper perfectly.

basically, i just put a nice layer down and pushed the lip onto the bumper. i wiped away any excess silicon. once u have it cleaned up and pressed down, get some masking tape put that on to help hold the lip to bumper. the silicon needed some time to dry and bond. so i held the lip on with the tape. next day i went out and took the tape off and the lip was holding great. hasn't moved since and it's been months.

Where can I buy that 'clear silicon'? What brand was it?
I think I have a plan. I'm gonna park the car inside, use two heaters (one for each corner), apply silicon to the contact edges, tape it up and leave it there for several hours (possibly overnight). Hopefully that'll allow the polyurethane to soften up and mold better while the silicon will glue to piece to the bumper.

just get it from a hardware store or walmart. dap makes some nice clear silicon. u can't have a heater going with the silicon on, just so u know. i'd keep the tape on overnight. i usually give it a full day to tell u the truth. better safe than sorry.

Ok thanks man. I think I'll heat up the pieces on the bumper for an hour or so to soften them up, apply the silicon, tape it up, then turn off the heat to allow everything to cool and mold in place. Hopefully that works

Bump for suggestions
Plus, I'm also worried that masking tape won't be strong enough to hold the part down for very long. I'm gonna try to think of something creative. Maybe I can back my car into the garage and close enough to the wall that I can wedge something in between the wall and bumper to keep the piece stuck onto the bumper while the adhesive dries?

yes the masking tape is strong enough. u don't just put one piece. put a bunch. x-cross the tape, do some vertical, horizontal, etc. didn't say u had to do it. it worked for me and it's held now for probably 9mos.

So after all this time, I thought the rear apron was supposed to come with brackets. Yes or no? I asked Preston at Gruppe-S about why mine didn't come with brackets and he said,
"Dave,
My shipping guy says there is no brackets for the rear aprons, just double sided tape.
Thanks
Preston"
Is this true? I could've swore I read threads from people who bought the replicas and their apron came with brackets

I am looking at the brackets for my rear aprons right now (sitting on my desk in a bag) there are a total of four, two for each side... also came with 8 screws/lock nuts and a bunch of washers.
Does this mean that you're only using some kind of adhesive to keep your rear aprons on? Could that be why the right side is bulging a little?
Reason I ask is because mine are at the shop getting painted right now and I want to be able to avoid this situation if possible. I would contact Gruppe-S again and let them know that you know for sure that they are supposed to come with brackets. Talk to a different person if you have to. I ordered mine from Gruppe-S.

Ok, here's an update. Preston stood corrected again and he is sending me the brackets and a free pink 'i' emblem
Right now, it's being held up with adhesive and medium gauge wire. GHETTO!! There are holes on the bottom of the apron and holes on the bottom of the bumper. I thread the wire through both holes and hold them together. Should stay until I get my mounting hardware. For the wheel well, I managed to find a bolt, washer and nut to hold that in place to make sure those pieces aren't gonna fly off on the highway.

Didn't have this part specifically, but I have used this step on some plastics.
Use your tape to get the temp hold you want. Allows you to shift mods around and get it just right. Then once you've got that, use your sisters/mothers/gf's hair dryer and slowly warm up the part. Avoid heating up the tape directly because that will just make it come undone. If you keep the hair dryer on and wave it back and forth about 6 to 10 inches away, it should slowly warm up the plastic and allow it to reshape it's self to what your tape is holding it too. Edges that need a little more bending, put a little more heat evenly over the entire bend and you should get nice round curves for it.
As always, do it slowly and if you can test the plastic out on a bit of scrap or an area that can't be seen.
Just my two cents.

Take the rear bumper off.. It'll be way easier
| wrx2k4blue | 03-05-2005 05:45 PM |
I ended up using a heat gun. I took the pieces off, heated them up and kept on trying to mold them until they fit perfectly. Even though after awhile it wasn't perfect, it was much better than it was before.
I applied epoxy to the contact surface, some double-sided tape, and bolted the piece on the bumper. Right now, I'm using electrical (sticky) tape to tape the edges to the bumper. Tomorrow afternoon, I'll slowly peel it off and hopefully the piece will be permanently stuck on the bumper!

| DieselClown | 03-16-2005 08:17 AM |
if u order from gruppe-s, it should include everything needed (brackets, lip, tape). I too have tried everything and just CANNOT get the left side to fit correctly. I haven't called gruppe-s re: this yet but I don't expect a refund anyway since I've had it on for some time already. I'm going to pull them off for sure before this summer and either try to fit on the bugeye rear with the diffusers or just get the JDM ones.

u can see the fitment here....ALSO, mine came with the brackets and lip, sorry but NO TAPE. I used the tape that was left over from the front lip.

For what it's worth, I used a heat gun and within 30 minutes of trying out different mold shapes, I got the right one. The idea is to soften the plastic, mold it, hold it, and allow the piece to cool down so it holds the shape. Then you can put it up against the bumper and see if it fits any better. Worked awesome for me. The left skirt fit ok so I didn't do anything with that, but the right piece was HORRIBLE!!!!
Plus, epoxy is your friend. Double-sided tape may work too but I think epoxy is the best. It also doesn't discolor the paint either. AND, you can paint over it. Just apply epoxy glue, tape the apron to the bumper to secure it and let it sit there for a few hours. When you come back, it'll be permanently bonded to the bumper. The combo of that and a heat gun worked perfectly for me.

I did it inside my garage which was probably around 45 degrees, but with epoxy, you don't need a very warm environment. If you're concerned, you can put an electric heater a couple of feet away to make the surrounding area warmer.
With a heat gun, you could melt plastic even if you were outside. Those things, when set at 'high', are pretty hot. All I have to say is, don't put your finger in front of a heat gun!
Good luck

Lucky for me, my fiance had a heat gun (pretty random I know) and I was able to do this in my garage where it's nice and warm. Now that I know how easy it is to 'correct' the molding issue, I'm glad I didn't spend the extra $200 on the JDM ones. The paint looks good on these too

I'm interested if anyone has tried fitting this on the wagon as well.....especially since it seems like moulding with a heat gun is inevitable, maybe a little more heat and moulding effort = fitting an 04 wagon?

I'm too lazy (actually I'm about to go to sleep) but perhaps someone would like to volunteer finding a rear pic of both a stock wagon and stock sedan (same year of course). Maybe an angled shot would be good too.
What really matters is how low the bumper goes on the wagon. If it's as thick as the sedan's bumper, then there's a chance it might fit

Here's my stock a$$

It looks like the bumper does dip a little bit lower at the corners but that doesn't mean the apron can't fit. From the side, the bumpers look similar too.
Here is a shot of my car from the side (this was taken last summer)

Both the sedan and wagon have that little groove leading to the wheel well area. That is actually where the rear apron lines up to, that groove. The angle of the bumper seems almost the same, I can't tell if it's exactly the same or not.

| classvi | 03-17-2005 02:40 PM |
If you look at the rear view of both wagon and sedan, it does look different near the bottom, the sedan flattens out and the wagon is more rounded, I don't know if this would make a difference seeing that the apron is attaching higher up than that. I don't think I'm going to spend the money until I see someone that has at least test fit it up.
| wrx2k4blue | 03-17-2005 03:26 PM |
I'm glad I have a sedan!
| Opes | 03-17-2005 06:25 PM |
hmm, wrx2k4blue, I agree, from the side it looks quite similar and was thinking the same thing as classvi that this may be doable since most of the contact with the rear bumper will come near the top groove? When you mounted the sedan ones is there any part of the spat that mounts onto the bottom part of the bumper? Since the sedan rear seems to flatten out at the bottom, I'm worried that there may be a gap left on the wagon that fits into the spat on the sedan. (I'm specifically thinking about the brackets that have been mentioned to come with the spats...how do those come into play)
| wrx2k4blue | 03-17-2005 11:46 PM |
Here's the thing about the brackets...I haven't used them yet! Gruppe-S sent me the wrong item, then when they finally got the apron out they forgot the brackets, but I was impatient, so I installed them without the mounting hardware. I used a bolt, washer and nut that I found in the garage and stuck it on using double-sided tape and epoxy. That was after heating it up to perfect the mold.
If the only reason why they say the apron doesn't fit the wagon is because of the mounting brackets won't fit properly, then I would say go for it. My apron is holding on real well with epoxy and the double-sided tape. It's holding on so well that if I tugged REAL hard on the apron, the bumper would go with it.
It'd be nice if Gruppe-S or anyone else could show us what the apron would look like when held up to the wagon bumper...
