That car is so badly designed in so many places i would be here all night. For a start you never mount a fire extingusisher at head height in the middle of a rollcage bar with the impact force of a front impact being enough to break the mounts so it flies through the air and hits you on your head. Stupid car.

Is it just me, or does the car seem to have a really really small wheelbase in comparison to the chassis of the car? O.o That thing is butt fugly.

You know, I actually like it. Cheers to Saturn for not following the typical American manufactures by getting into NASCAR. I see them going very far in Rally. Especially with those FREAKING SUBS IN THE BACK SEAT!!!! Honestly! I see that and think it's got to be a joke. But then I see the dash and can't figure things out. I certainly hope they have an LCD screen that pops out of the dash to complinment those Subs! WTH were they thinking. Do they really get that bored in between stages? So bored they have to BUMP some Ludacris while rolling out of service. Damn this car is pissing me off. Must sleep.

Going to bring these into photoshop and overlay them to see what kind of overhang there is... I don't think the overhang is that bad.... when compared to a known to do well , proven rally car.

i don't think it's so much the overhang that'll mess up the car, it's the wheelbase, the actual distance between the center of the front and rear axles...
the overhang just looks stupid. ;)

I think what is making it look so strange is that the front end is actually very short AND the front wheels sit back a long way on the body. The wheel wells must intrude significantly on the passenger compartment.
OTOH, that means that the strut towers will be really close to the firewall which is good for chassis rigidity. Compare the position of the A-pillar in relation to the front wheels between the Saturn and the Audi, and you'll probably see what I mean.
Oh, yah. One more thing. "Edge" styling looked like crap on the Mercury Cougar, and it looks like crap on a Saturn too. That is one fugly fascia.

Personally (and don't confuse these the following comments with me showing any affection for Saturn) I think that GM should get off its arse and build a competition car based on either the Cav or the Ion. Whether it be touring car or Rally, I'd like to see a NA model running with the big boys... with a little credibility, and, dare I say, race bred technology maybe they'll stop making crap. Ford brought us the Focus, and although its watered down to hell, its still has the greatest credibility of any of the big 3's compacts. GM has access to Subaru's AWD tech, and the Ecotec is a very stout powerplant that is going totally unutilized.

Good grief... tough crowd.
For a bunch of people who whine about the FIA screwing up the WRC and making it less attractive to manufacturers, you guys sure do bash the hell out of a new manufacturer who makes a rally based project.
Granted, much of the car is set up for the general "tooner" populus... the stereo for example. I'm sure it could have been done right to spec... but then it's a race car and race car concepts are boring to most consumers.
Look at what Dodge did. They are running the SRT-4 in a very unconventional race series... SCCA Pro Rally. While it may not be *real* rallying to some motorsports forum frequents, it's what we have over here. So you have Dodge with their new sporty car for the younger generation racing in an unconventional series... and doing quite well too. What is wrong with seeing a new younger generation based car company testing the waters?
Looking past the tooner nonsense, the car has two big things that ranks it pretty high in my book... AWD and a fair amount of HP. Even having another automaker looking into AWD performance applications, espically in small affordable cars, is great.
Even though is has the two big things Evo's and WRX's have, I'm sure it will fall into the "It's still a Saturn" group the SRT-4 fell into if it ever realizes life.
Personally, I applaud Saturn for having the balls to base a project on a virtually unknown racing series and get at least the basics right. Now... go back to the drawing board and make something we can see in competition.

I'm guessing they are still using that week-a$$ pot metal subframe in the front that the US saturn rally cars have soo much trouble with.

Well, I just asked "are they for real, or did someone put it together and show it somewhere claiming that?". I went to the page that was hosted on and got my answer...
Saturn showed this ION Rally concept at the 2003 Woodward Dream Cruise.
Which leads me to believe that they are for real, though I don't know what the Woodward Dream Cruise is.
Honestly, if they went more higher with the front bodywork and then had someone that knew how to build rally cars (and the rules that follow), they could have a good car on their hands to compete. That car was obviously built by someone that didn't know the rules, nor compensated for the abuse that the cars will really take.
A decent attempt, but it needs a lot of work.
Now my question is, since GM AWD system = Subaru AWD system... and Saturn = GM... does Saturn AWD = Subaru AWD system?

What makes this funny, is I own a saturn, (and a WRX), and Ive personnally testdrove the new 2004 Saturn Ion QC Red-line car. it comes stock with 255 HP at the crank Supercharged and many other features a normal ION doesnt come with (eg. different compression ratios, newly added tunned suspension, all kinds of other stuff too) . This is a really good car, not only because I own a Saturn, but compared to my WRX, it doesnt come far behind. I am waiting for this concept to come true, because I plan on trading my current saturn SC in and getting a redline ION and making the changes required to do replicate this rally car.
Now, i hear you guys just talking **** about saturns because to you their just another one of those 'honda' class cars. Saturn is currently making a long way to becoming a leader in the sport compact class. If you pay attention to drag racing and the NHRA/NOPI series, you would already know that the Saturn ION PRO OUTLAW FWD car has taken the worlds fastest QM time and speed record at 8.006. Soon their going to make the first fwd to break a 7 second quarter mile time. So for how cheap of a car they are, their well worth it. btw, i personally love how it looks ;D
Well now that iam done talking about my daily driver, im ready to hear all you haters **** talk about how much saturn is coming along to becoming more then a worthey match for the subaru =P

I'm going to guess that it has the same AWD system as the Saturn Vue. The idea is great, but nothing helps out the looks. It's like putting makeup on a wart hog. The Vue Redline looks much much better.

I will never buy a Saturn. If you look at JD Powers, they have a ton of issues/problems. Poor build quality and horrible styling.
There's nothing about that car that's rally.
:furious:
Thumbs down. Leave rallying to good companies or at least better companies. (I don't care if you disagree with me).

I dunno about any one else, but I'm still laughing at the Focus (at least the US Focus).
The WRC one is freaking awesome and the ones in Britian (where the Focus is actually from) aren't bad at all (especially the RS). But what we see here in the US is a joke. It's a grocery getter along with the Honda Civic.

This has zip, zilch, zero, nothing to do with the Saturn you can buy from a dealer. This would be the equivalent of saying the Peugeot 206 road car is awesome. Sure, the WRC version is probably the best in the circuit, but the road going car is only 2wd w/130ish HP. Far from impressive.

This is the perfect example (and I see it everyday) of a marketeer (like a mouseketeer) deciding that it would be exciting to show off what kinda car a teenager could build if they had the coin.
"Rally cars are cool, the kids like them, I see them on speed TV. Hey, wouldn't it be fun if we got into rally"
followed by...
"Hey engineers, build a rally car out of an ION..."
I'm putting the truck together for SEMA, and in my big box of parts there's a fuel door cover that looks like carbon and aluminum, but is printed plastic with double sided tape on the back. I'm thinking, this truck has a 5000 dollar paint job, I'm NOT sticking this thing on there.
to see the truck, it's on the opening page of www.lundlook.com
I'm an engineer, I design running boards and deal with crap...but it's SOOOOOOO much FUN.

IIRC, some interior designer had a 'bright idea' and was allowed to follow through on it. Doesn't another one of the "youth market" cars have a center instrument cluster too? Vibe/Matrix maybe?
And yeah, I think it's a retarded place for 'em too.
I think it would get rather annoying looking right all the time to see my gauges. Did Saturn just do that to export them to lhd countries easier or are they retarded?
1636 total. 530 that count. Regional and OT don't count though. You're only 25 away from being a big boy though (not that it matters).

regional doesn't count???
Why??? That's the only place worth wasting my time. That's where my friends are, and I've got nothing to contribute to the other forums...mostly because I've "been there, done that"
post count doesn't mean anything. Member number says it all.

Steve, been that way for well over a year now. ;) They were thinking why should someone who only posts locally (like 75% of the people here, including myself) be called a Guru/Specialist when they don't impart that much technical knowledge.
