For those of you that don't go over to specialstage.com here's some information about a reporter who wants to know more about the event.
I just got this from a buddy. Here's your chance to be heard, folks:
I just got off the phone with
Heather Lake
AV Press (newspaper)
661-267-4133
[emailprotected]
She had already called the CHP to get their side of the story, they said 17 cars were towed.
Anyway she really wants to hear from people who were there. PLEASE call her, and get your point across.
If you feel more comfortable please email her.
She was esp. interested in how the cars were towed, if the drivers took cash to release the cars on the spot etc.
I thinks its worth it to make the 5 min call. She wants to hear from people today if possible.

Rally spectators left out in cold when vehicles get towed
This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press Tuesday, May 6, 2003.
By HEATHER LAKE
Valley Press Staff Writer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GREEN VALLEY - Some spectators attending the Rim of the World Rally last weekend walked nearly six miles round trip in the cold rain to view a leg of the racing event only to find their vehicles had been towed in their absence.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Hulbert said the CHP received a call Saturday reporting traffic hazards along Spunky Canyon Road; officers found about 20 unattended vehicles improperly parked. Seventeen were towed away, according to the CHP; bystanders said it was closer to 50.
Spectators apparently were supposed to park on an access road at the top of the mountain but were unable to do so because of the weather. Many said they were told by event coordinators to park where they could.
As afternoon gave way to evening, an estimated 100 adults and children reportedly were stranded in the cold rain in an area without a signal for their cellular phones. At least one man was able to get to the tow truck driver before he pulled away and got his car unhooked for $100. Others were told they could not pick up their vehicles until Monday.
Normal practice is if the vehicle's owner gets to the tow truck before it's en route, he or she can retrieve the vehicle for a fee, said the owner of Ahlgreen's Towing Service, who refused to give his name; Valley Press files list the owner as Carl Ahlgreen. He said Ahlgreen's fee is $105.
Not normal, however, is the practice of refusing to allow individuals to pay with a valid credit card, which reportedly was the case for the owner of one vehicle. Secton 22651 of the vehicle code states, "A person operating or in charge of any storage facility who refuses to accept a valid bank credit card for payment of towing shall be liable to the registered owner of the vehicle for four times the amount of the towing and storage charges not to exceed $500."
Scott Beherns found himself in a particular pickle because he and his three passengers left their wallets in his Ford F-250 pickup truck, which was towed by Ahlgreen's. Some $268.72 later, Beherns had his truck back but the experience left a bitter taste in his mouth.
"We were left stranded on the mountain," Beherns said, adding that one of his passengers was handicapped.

Me thinks a few of the tow companies were trying to "under the table" some income by insisting on cash......what's the bet the paperwork magically never appeared for those cars that paid cash
I hope that this blows up in their faces and in the faces of the CHP officers doing this. if they had to pay everyone they towed $500.......
This is as blatant an example of revenue raising as I have ever heard of not to mention the risk of leaving people exposed in that weather - lucky no one had issues with exposure/hypothermia

Has anyone called Antelope Valley CHP at 661-948-8541?
I'm gonna call them this afternoon, if I get a few moments to complain, and learn their views.
What needs to happen in these situations is to start at the bottom, (who were the officers involved (I think there were two or three units circling up there), who were the tow truck companies, how many cars did each tow company take... Then go up through the ranks, who was the shift supervisor at that time, who does the shift supervisor report to... What mechanisms are there for handling complaints? Who else has asked about this situation? Are there any other formal complaints? etc.
Then share the info here, and w/Dave Coleman at SCC, the A/V reporter, w/Gov. Davis, etc.

The AVPress reporter is doing her own research too, i'm sure. But she also may get tired of the story pretty soon, unless she get the tow drivers for the whole cash only thing I stumbled upon the other day.

But I've crewed on race cars before, and I don't like to dawdle around if I can be lending a hand instead when a friend is racing. But since I was still chilled and stiff from the wind and rain at the spectator spot back up the mountain, I wasn't much use to the team. You were fairly busy de-mudding Jamie's wheels. If I was in better shape, I would have offered to grab a screwdriver or stick and helped.
So I beg your pardon... that was rude of me not to say hello.

Maybe we should all send emails to the organizers about this. In defense of them though, there may have been some sort of "legal" problem that prevented them from having it this year. I heard rumors about this, but I really don't know if that is the case.
I worked at the Pelona Vista park as the "rally car parking attendent"and I asked the same question of why we are not having the SS stages at Holiday Inn like last year. The answer I got from the organizers is that some property owners around the Holiday Inn are trying to sell the properties to some big time development company and doesn't want to have some weekend rally traffic and noise to snip the deal.
Otherwise I agree that the SS stages at Holiday Inn was definitely more fun to watch than the cheezy haybill tarmac road for 5 seconds!! It was fun to direct the rally cars out to the tarmac but the Sherrif RV was blocking most of the view! ARGH!

That's a shame. I figured it must have been some kind of snag like that. Hopefully they'll get it figured out for next year, or find another lot to have it in. It's not like Palmdale doesn't have any unused dirt lots!

The official CHP opinion...

Dear Mr. Wallace:
Your concerns were investigated and we found the following;
1. The U. S. Forest Service contacted the CHP and reported vehicles were blocking the roadway.
2. CHP responded and noticed several vehicles in the roadway (to the left of the fogline).
3. One of the CHP officers contacted race officials and asked them to announce that vehicles were blocking the roadway and would be towed if they were not moved. The officer told the officials they had 45 minutes to use their radios or other means to let the everyone know.
4. The officers then called for tow trucks since they could not leave the scene knowing there were cars in the roadway, due to safety and civil liability issues.
5. The officers remained at the scene and offered to call cabs for some people.
6. ONLY vehicles in the roadway were towed.
As mentioned in my earlier e-mail, once we receive information of vehicles blocking a roadway, we cannot ignore them or leave them. It has been detemined based on the above information, the officers acted appropriately and within policies and laws. If I may be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to e-mail or call (661) 948-8541).
Sincerely,
Captain Brian Smith

Well, #5 is a bald-faced lie.
I was at the bottom of the mud hill the entire day, and the CHP officers were refusing to help stranded people who asked, when they were there, and then they left, leaving everyone else to fend for themselves.
