Should I paint this thing, or what?

Got my Greddy lip, but it didn't come painted. Thinking about leaving it unpainted like this. Don't be shy - tell me what you think.
Edit note: If the fit looks slightly off, it's because the lip isn't fully installed, just hanging there by the parts that conform, but it's pretty close.

I think it'd look cool both ways. However, if you wanna keep it black like it is, you should keep other parts black on the car so it sorta matches, hehe (like what you've done w/ your fog covers, etc.). But overall, I think you'll be more satisfied with it being painted. But that's my opinion, hope it helped man.

yah, paint it. is it urethane? if so, just sand with 400 grit, use some duplicolor silver metallic and clearcoat. you're done. $11.

I like the monochromatic look alot, so I say paint it.

So what brand of fog light covers are those and where did you get them?
They appear to be a more open mesh than most I have seen. Unless it is just the lighting.

Those are the real STI ones. Got them from Vivid. 5 minutes to install.

Paint ALL of it including lights, foglight covers and lip. And get a STi grill or something to boot! :p
| In2Deep | 02-27-2002 03:47 AM |
I think it looks good with the color of the headlights. To compliment it though, you should look into a Carbon Fiber Hood scoop. With a c/f hoodscoop, the car would look awesome!
:)

paint the lip,but definately keep the fogs and headlights black.:)

My opinion:
i would keep the headlights black, paint the trim on the fog covers, then leave the lip unpainted.
Im a sucker for black (and the monochromatic look);)
looking good!

Don't paint the lip, it's got that JDM look to it the way it is. Also, the lip on Skyline GT-R's are a flat black like that. I happen to like the way it looks.

Keep the silver and black Imperial thing going for now--it's the meanest looking WRX I've seen on the streets. Paint it later if you must, but enjoy as is for now.

Paint the lip. IMO if the lip was thinner and more subtle I'd say leave it. But paint the lip, leave the lights and paint the trim around your foglight covers.

I'm with EJ20WRX, just paint the trim on the fog light covers.

That's sweet. If my sideskirts were painted, I'd definitely paint the lip (or get black sideskirts), but I think the black-on-silver (like your GC8) looks mean (thanks, jaepu), especially with my gunmetal subzeros and black lights/foglight covers. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what it looks like after I get my zero 2's and lower it a little.

Leave it black--it compliments the headlights. And that's one area you won't have to worry about chipping every time a little piece of road crud hits it!

I think that's what I'm going to do. If it was the only black part on the car, I'd definitely paint it, but I like all the black stuff on silver - my rims are gunmetal, too. I may still change my mind, tho.
I got the lights from Vivid Racing for $674.99 + shipping. Love 'em.

Probably will look riced to the untrained eye, but anyone who knows how much UK300 headlights and STI foglight covers (and Greddy spoilers) cost will know I wasn't too broke to paint it. :) Besides, there are several spoilers/spats that are made to be black on a non-black car (the UK300 lip and the stock sideskirts on the silver WRX, for example).

Paint it black! IMO if it's painted silver it will look too busy, as the design of the stock car is quite busy already, too many hole around the fog lights. Also, your fog light covers and headlights look great in black, so I'd say paint it black. More unique too.:D Just my personal opinion as a designer. :D
| 2Point5RS | 02-28-2002 02:01 PM |
Get it painted.. with the side skirts.
| SQUAD_907 | 02-28-2002 06:43 PM |
paint it and paint the trim of the fog light covers too! oh...and the side skirts! :D
| Rzk | 02-28-2002 07:17 PM |
Cool, two tone like the Outbacks. Since your sideskirts are black and have other black trim pieces, I say keep it black.
| ForceFed4 | 02-28-2002 07:50 PM |
Whatever color you make it, I say paint it either way. Bare plastic like it is now doesn't match the car and will make it look like a cheap tack-on to the car; it will always look like a piece of plastic taped to the bumper. Either paint it flat black to match the sideskirts, or paint it and the sideskirts silver to match the car; that's what I would do if it were mine. That's just my opinion, but hey, that's what you asked for I guess.
| jlogan9 | 02-28-2002 08:10 PM |
I say whatever you do keep side skirts and lip the same color, would look really tacky otherwise

| SFastWRX | 03-01-2002 02:44 PM |
I'll take some pics with different angles and post 'em tomorrow. I'm going to take the lip with me to the body shop Monday (having them paint to fix some flying road debris scratches), and I'll have them paint the lip and sideskirtsn while I'm at it. Hopefully the crack trip they were on when I was down there last has worn off (they gave me a ballpark figure to paint a spoiler of $1200    ). I'll post some after pics when they're done. I should have my Cusco Zero 2's by then, so I can lower the front a little, too.
| KonKoz | 03-01-2002 02:59 PM |
Just leave it alone. It compilments the other black components, and I agree that you would worry less about chips, I know I would. It looks meaner this way; paint it only if you want a tamer look, or if you want to stealth it out a little.
Think about painting the area between your lights and the grill like this:

It would look ok unpainted if it wasn't so big compared to the bumper.

Well, guys - this has become a moot point. I put the lip on yesterday and went to pull the car out onto the street so I could take some pics, but the front of the car won't clear the ramp to get out of the garage with the lip on. The lip isn't really that low, but it's a couple inches lower and sticks out a few inches farther than stock, and the ramp is pretty steep. It was really close.
Bummer, especially since I have a set of painted C-West sideskirts and rear underspoiler on the way from NY that should be here Wednesday.

| holam | 03-03-2002 04:42 PM |
sorry to hear about that, but u r not the only one, my garage exit is a steep ramp too, that's why I can't get a lip for my v4 bumper. I'm luckier because I knew the problem therefore I didn't buy the lip, but it would be so much nicer with the lip on (both for ur car and my car):(
| SFastWRX | 03-03-2002 07:10 PM |
Sucks, doesn't it? Maybe after I sell this lip and the sideskirs/rear underspoiler, I'll try the UK300 lip. At least I can still lower my car an inch or two.

That looks really sweet, Roy! Nice headlights ;) . Love the wheels.
I haven't received the pkg yet, but UPS sez it should be here Wednesday, which is fine, because 1) My car is at the body shop getting painted and 2) I can't use the Greddy lip if I plan to use the garage at my apartment building, which means they are going to be for sale again because I won't have a lip that matches them. :( Now I'm going to have to get something like the UK300 lip and/or drop it as far as I can and still get it in/out of the garage - the Greddy lip is 3 1/4" lower than the stock bumper and sticks out a couple inches forward and it almost made it, so I think I should be OK dropping the car 1 1/2" to 2" in front.

i'd just leave it...it looks fine! as long as you have something else to offset the black, you're OK. a black lip on a silver car that's had every bit of trim painted over would look silly on the other hand...
so many people are all up in arms about eliminating every bit of black trim from cars...look at the mid-late 90's BMW's...there's black trim all over those things (bumpers, mirrors, doors, etc), even the big 7 $eries. hardly bad looking cars in my book.

I remember reading a car design magazine, some designer said certain parts are designed to be left black, I believe so too, if you paint every bit of the car the same color, sometimes it looks really ugly.
