Show me your gauges!!
I'm looking for some original ideas about where and how to mount guages. I've seen the A-pillar and the dash pod, but want to do something more inconspicuous. If you've come up with a different place or way to mount your gauges, please share with me/us. Thanks

inconspicuous? lol your trying to hide your gauges? come on now.. you need to be able to see them at all times!

Forgive my naive friend, but surely there are those of you out there who have seen gauges placed so that the driver can plainly see them, but passerbys walking passed the parked car cannot. Nor other drivers lining up for an ass-kicking. It's called stealth or sleeper. Please, think before you speak. Anyway, I'm interested in seeing what some of you have come up with. Steering column, air vents, glove box, etc. Thanks
| Schleppy | 06-12-2002 05:35 PM |
Well, I was going to put a mechanical boost gauge in the left vent, but that didn't work (you can fit an electronic gauge however).
I am mouting whatever gauges I get in the spare DIN sized slot under my aftermarket stereo. That is good and stealth, and still more than visible.

What size gauge did you try to fit in the left a/c vent? And what size are you using in the din? I ordered 2 1/16" (52mm) gauges. Have you seen anyone else with their gauges in the din? I like that idea. Is there room for them, and if so, how many? Thanks

dbrier - that could be just what I'm looking for. I couldn't find a price on their site. Any idea?
2OHOH2WRX - that's the dash pod I was referring to. I want something more out of site to passersby
That Omori kit could be the answer. Does the WRX have room already for that with the big six disc changer already in the dash?

no. you'll need an aftermarket single DIN receiver to use that gauge housing :)

60mm gauges
sdseagles- like the thread you have here- am actually wondering if using single DIN radio slot, and installing 60mm blitz DC gauges would work. any ideas about the 60mm electronic gauges fitting in this area?

I can't say for sure. It doesn't even look like Omori makes a gauge pod like the one above for 60mms. I'm getting the 52mms, but I don't really know if the 60s will fit. Sorry

Looks good, but I don't want others to be able to see it from the outside, that's why the single din above an aftermarket head unit seems the best location.
| QA Guy | 06-14-2002 01:32 PM |
People will still be able to see it if you have a single DIN head unit and put it above or below that in a DIN panel. It will be less conspicuous, though.
Window tinting would help with this, too.

| QA Guy | 06-15-2002 12:49 AM |
I don't have the Defi pod, but I've seen it. It's bigger than I wanted and was not cheap, so I passed on it.
It seems like any 60mm gauges should fit in it just fine.
Electric gauges are usually more expensive and don't require the substance to be measured to come into the gauge. I wouldn't use a mechanical oil pressure gauge, since I don't want oil coming into the cabin. A mechanical boost gauge, on the other hand, is fine with me.
Some gauges, like EGT, will only be available in an electric version.
Hope this helps.

So that's it? No flashes of brilliance, no hints of genius? No ingenuity? Just a dash pod or the single din? No one with a gauge pod mounted in the glove box that opens and comes out for racing/hard driving purposes? No one fashioned a gauge assembly in the armrest extension? How disappointing. I guess I'll have to figure something unique out when I get set to do the install. Thanks all for your input

The installation was very simple. The gauge bezel fits almost perfectly. I've seen the 52mm and didn't care for it and a 60mm still falls thru the vent bezel. 2 5/8" is the way to go.
Here's the link to install the TCG vent gauge. It will get you to the point where you can take the vent out. I just used the hardware that the gauge came with to install and tapped for light thru the fog light switch so that it will dim with the dash. The Ultralite series matches the dash perfectly, but any of their 2 5/8" series should work. I really like having a big boost gauge.

It's very easy. Just remove the vent. The gauge is mechanical so you just have to route a hose thru the firewall and tap to a pressure line the same way they do for the OEM gauges. The light is tapped to (in my case) to the fog light switch for power and so that it will dim. It looks almost OEM and is very easy to do with the right gauge. The cost was only $48 for the gauge and $15 for the hardware to hook it up.

I got the pod from a local, I believe he said he got it from Japan, don't know where. I got it with the gauges from him. The backing plate was on there as well, I believe he got it from a plastics manuf. company in town and cut it to fit. Looks like a stereo shop would be able to do this as well, looks like the face plate trim that someone would see around a radio that is smaller than the DIN opening it is put into.
I know I didn't help you much, but it's a start! :D

Can anyone tell me where I can get the paint that matches the dash color. I know it's made by SEM and the color is Ford Smoke Medium but I can't find it anywhere. There used to be a link somewhere in a thread but I can't find it anymore.
Thanks
Thanks

I still think I'm gonna go with a single din gauge pod, maybe Omori. I'm considering a recessed mounting so the gauges are covered when I'm not in the car. Any thoughts?

I bought an aerosol can of paint from HandsOnTool.

Select SEM39163.
I think the price went up $0.35 from when I bought
it in early June. The shipping cost more than the
paint!
