Show your Support for Subaru!
Hey all,
We are putting up several polls in the Motorsports forum in an effort to gather data to show Subaru that people want to see their cars in the higher levels of U.S. road racing.
Please go to the Motorsports forum and participate in all of the polls. Then, go get your friends, family members and anyone else you can think online and get them to participate in the polls.
With enough participation, we can bring a powerful story to Subaru to get involved in U.S. Roadracing.
Thank you!
Gary

Hey Gary,
Your making our motorsport forum look like a piece of crap with all these sticky polls. grrrrrrrrrrr
Subaru are using Rally the world over for their marketing, They do that because they have a heritage that the public can buy into.
If you wanna get Subaru to participate in your race programme then do what every other person out there does, go make a case for yourself with some substance. A poll on here wont do squat because your just showing the input from converts.
Sorry to be so blunt.

You people need to quit this "rally heritage" one sided view of an Subaru's. Subaru's are much more than just a rugged rally car. Gary proved it very well. So did many Japan race teams that race WRX's, SVX's and even VIVIO's around the tarmac race tracks.
Please, stop acting like you are nephews of Colin McRae.
This is not a place for an argument, so don't bother replying. You will only waste your time, as I will delete your ignorant replies.

I couldn't agree more with the Prez.
Felstead: I'm surprised at you. To see such a brilliant guy as you say such a thing just knocks me out. Rally is great, we all love it. But it's hardly a well understood/followed form of motorsports here in NA; certainly not like it is there in UK. You know this. All 3000 rally fans in the US that knew the car (WRX) already bought it. Other than that, Subaru in the US is a pretty small brand, purchased by people who want a safe rain/snow car. Rally heritage alone is not going to sell more cars for Subaru in the future. Fortunately they do realize this. I've seen their five-year strategy.
And I have to say it: This forum is nobody's private idaho....not even the great John Felstead. Loosen up, boys. Roadracing will help the bigger cause. Ultimately that will also make more dollars available for rally, too.

i think Subaru should come out with another model for on road racing..
cuz when i think of subaru, first thing that come to my mind is off road..
i also would like to see Subaru compete in Touring Car, GT etc...
Gary u r doing a good job in racing....how come Speedvision never show your racing on tv

i agree with john and jon. several of the polls aren't even motorsports related. this is just a cheap attempt to get money out of SOA.

 gary, you need to take a stat class. this BS is worthless and i would hope SOA isn't dumb enough to listen to you.
and alex, you can go f*ck yourself :monkey: no one is saying subarus should only be used for rallying, people are merely pointing out that these polls are not valid and that it just demeans the i-club in general and the motorsports forum in particular with this "sticky" bs. gee, it seems almost as if you have something to gain on a personal level from this, but if that were true, you'd have an entire forum devoted to things that you're selling and that would just be ridiculous. oh, go ahead an delete this, i can always repost it

RIGHT ON! :D:D Subaru's are not for rally only. They make GREAT all-purpose motorsports cars (maybe not drag racing though)

Well, FYI, I don't rally a Subaru. The only "motorsport"--if you can call it that--that I do with my Impreza is an occasional trackday.
I think you misread or misinterpreted my (and John's) response. If Gary has some sort of marketing agenda and you're letting him use the board that's your prerogative. My point isn't that track racing is bad or necessarily inferior to rally--did I say that?
Do you think my replies are ignorant?

#8. No double posting (posting the same message in 2 different forums) is allowed.
Or my english is so bad, Gary posted the same message to almost every single chapter/region forums, it's not only 2, and so he allowed to do so?
Yeah, Subaru is not only for rally, but the way he posted, make me feel like he want to get sponsor from SOA for himself. And we let him use our board to get sponsor, hello? Whoever rally, autox, trackday your suby, post your own poll here then!

J. Felstead post was what ticked me off. And I do think that his post was ignorant. If his post was ignorant, I do not expect more from his reply. Thats why I told HIM not to bother to reply.
I remember when some brit wanted to go in a circle for over 3 hours, that was big deal and "Support him blah-blah..." posts were all over i-Club and Scoobynet. J. Felstead was all over those posts with his support. And now, when one of my very close friends, fellow i Clubber needs your support, you get your panties in a big bunch and start telling Gary what to do. I am sorry, but this is IGNORANT!
10th Warrior was simply rude and vulgar, thats why is he where he is. I don't mind critisism, as long as it is constructive and not DEstructive.
Cross-posting was allowed by me personally, after I spoke with Gary on the phone.
I am sorry, if I wasn't clear in my first post.

it's a simple case of the parasitic drag of an AWD system..
too much horsepower loss on tarmac :p

So AWD parasitic loss was the reason behind Audi's HUUUUGE success in BTCC which caused many complaints on behalf of the other BTCC non-AWD driving teams.

Wow! I was just begining to enjoy WRC.
I hope all You rally fans are not as pompous as J. Felstead. I dont care if he is the greatest name in motorsports, as some of you seem to think. I personally feel that any attention we can garner from SOA, is good for the marque.
I would also venture a guess that there are a hell of a lot more WRX owners involved in Autocrossing, than in rallying, here in SOA Country. I happen to be a real fan of roadracing, but I also enjoy almost every type of Motorsport. What Gary Sheehan is doing, is GOOD for Subaru and Good for every Subaru Owner. He is trying to get more people involved in racing Subaru's, and that will eventually improve our NEW "Rugged Roadracing Image". Give Em Hell Gary, I wont be afraid to tell all my aquaintainces in the SCCA about our Great Club, and by the way I encourage everyone to cancel thier subscription to Autoweek, its no longer a credable motorsports publication.
"Cant we all just get along" That may go over your head, Mr. Felstead, but after reading your post, its exactly what I wanted to do to you!
Jerry C
PS, I am so pissed, I am thinking of selling my Healey.

Hey Gary,
Your making our motorsport forum look like a piece of crap with all these sticky polls. grrrrrrrrrrr
WOW, talk about hitting a raw nerve. I dont know what you guys read into my post but i am totally staggered by the response, especially of Alex. Let me explain each paragraph.
First of all, This Forum does now look like a piece of crap. In no way would anyone else make so many polls like this about the same subject and not have them merged. The policy for a long time in this forum has been to merge threads that cover the same subject. This has worked very well and made this forum a place worth contributing to.
My second paragraph states precisely the Subaru stance on their marketing and the reason why they have this stance. You guys have very short memories. It's only 12 months since Subaru actually decided to do any oficial participation in the USA in motorsport and it's been a huge success in terms of both results and marketing. I DO NOT say in that paragraph that Road Racing a Subaru is a waste of time or that it wont work. Where did that come from? My paragraph, if you choose to actually try understanding it's content tells you what you are up against, it doesnt say dont go do it, it doesnt say it wont work.
My third paragraph tells you the realities of gaining support. Companies dont give a damn about gathering info like this from a group that is totally loyal to the marque. What i am saying is that if you want to get support you need to go and make a case for yourself that does not include this type of information because to the rather sophisticated people in company promotion you need to convince, they see this for what it is. A group of genuine supporters who are already 100% behind the product.
I have been around race and rally cars all my adult life, i am 36 now and i have seen enough about running a race or rally programme to know what tends to get attention and what doesnt. This kind of thing does nothing to help you achieve your goals, which i aplaud 100%.
I am totally shocked by you saying you will delete my post Alex. I have been around here for quite a while now. I think i make good contributions to this comunity. Yes at times i am blunt and to the point but someone has to be. One thing you learn as you get older is that being kind and nice may massage your ego and make everyone feel all warm inside but in matters like this, all that happens is you waste time and energy chasing the wrong agenda when you could be really focusing on something that makes a diference.
I do not profess to be a god in motorsport. Where that comes from i dont know? If i were a god, and believe me i know a few as friends, i would not waste my time (i dont ever see my posts as wasting time) on this Forum trying to give a genuine insight into the sport. I have 20 years active participation in motorsport behind me, before that i rode trial bikes from 13 so for the majority of my life i have been around this stuff. I still dont say i am a god. I am just a knowledgable enthusiast who likes to share that knowledge with people trying to learn. I also enjoy the banter and fun we have here too. Our F1 posts are always classic humour. Hell, lots of the people on this Forum i consider friends even though i havent met them.
Now for you guys to take such offence to what i posted and to threaten me because i chose to point out a few truths saddens me more than you can posibly imagine. There seems to be real hate in the tone of your post Alex. What the hell did i do to you to warrant that?
It's up to you Alex. If you choose to delete this post and are incapable of seeing some critisism then i will be more disapointed than you could possibly imagine.
I hope you dont do that because if you do you wont get a second oportunity to do it again.
I moderate on scoobynet, i know what being a moderator is all about. To delete this post will be unaceptable to me and you will have lost someone from these forums who loves the place and the people who frequent it.
A BBS has no value without the input from it's members, dont lose sight of that fact. Yes you own it and can do what you like with it, thats your perogotive. That doesnt mean you are always correct, no one ever is, especially me.
Your call.
P.S. Merry Christmass, i hope you all have a great time.

Hey Gary,
Your making our motorsport forum look like a piece of crap with all these sticky polls. grrrrrrrrrrr
Another vote for "Too many Stickies". Won't larger numbers in any given poll be a better reflection of the support you're seeking?

I forgot one thing.
The "3 hour going round in circles" comment.
I only recall a couple of distinct posts on this that i contributed to, i did not spam the board. I explained what we were trying to achieve and then reported back when we achieved our goal.
What we actually achieved was the first World Record, in fact the first notable achievement for the new WRX ever made.
We worked for 6 months setting up a world record attempt, working with people at Subaru, Prodrive, MIRA, Datron, Toyo etc. I was responsible for giving some advise on the technical aspects of the attempt such as Turbo and diff longevity.
The record would have been ratified by the Guiness book of world records if we achived a time of 15 minutes of holding a car, We chose the WRX, in a completely sideways attitude.
On our first and only attempt we set a new world record of 2 hours 11 minutes and 18 seconds, at which point the fuel ran out!
I think thats an acheivement worth sharing with I-Club. You have no idea how much effort went into setting up the first ever record for the new WRX. Getting on MIRA with Camera's is unheard of due to it's nature as test venue to the worlds car manufacturers. That was just one hurdle we had to overcome.
We raised over $11,000 for charity in the process.

So and I guess you have an idea of how to setup a WRX to win a 2nd place overall in US Touring championship on the first attemp by 2 people in their own garage?
Hmmm.... Lets see, going 2 hours in a circle OR coming a arm reach within the top position in the year long, 12 event, nationwide Touring Car Championship.
Your critisism is fine. I just don't think you know the whole story. Neither who Gary is, what he does, and where he competes, nor what SOA does, supports or chooses to promote.

Yikes!
First of all, I'd like to thank everyone that has participated in the polls and showed their support for what we are doing here.
I have to say that I am very surprised to see the anger in some of the responses. Honestly, I never considered what the aesthetics of the polls would be. I apologize to everyone I may have offended with the multiple polls and excessive cross-posts.
What we are trying to do is gather some compelling data that will show Subaru that there is an interest in seeing Subaru in the U.S.'s premier road racing series for stock based cars. It was never our intention to point Subaru to these pages and say "look, see, everyone wants this." The results will be a very small part of a fairly extensive proposal to Subaru.
A few comments have insinuated that I am out to squeeze money from Subaru for my own personal gain. Going after corporate dollars to fund a racing program takes an incredible amount of effort, thought and creativity. The ONLY way we will get the funding to run a Subaru in World Challenge is to show them that there will be a larger return on their investment with this program than with spending money in other ways. This will come down to a pure business decision for Subaru and they are smart people. No one will be swindling Subaru any time soon.
Thanks again to all the people showing their support by participating in the polls.
Sincerely,
Gary

Alex, I am not going to get into a pissing contest/flame war with you about my background in motorsport, whats the point? I didnt mention anything about myself in the post i made.
All i did was critisise what i saw as inapropriate use of the forum. I am entitled to do that as much as anybody is entitled to criticise me.
I did not call Gary names, swear at him or post a remark to flame him. I just pointed out the obvious to me, that this isnt the best way for him to achieve something and it has made this place look a mess.
I wish Gary 100% success and i am very glad to see him achieve something special. It's obvious Gary was only trying to do something positive, that doesnt mean we have to say nothing when we see something that looks wrong.
I dont agree with some of the comments in this thread, especially the ones about squeezing SOA for money. I never mentioned anything about that. I hope Gary does get support from SOA, i hope he gets enough funding from elsewhere also to achieve his goals. I never once said anything negative about him gaining support from anywhere, i just pointed out that this method wont help him.
You can say what you wish re the world record we set. I honestly havent a clue why you brought that up anyway? The fact is we, as a team of people, did something no one has ever done before and in doing so that gave the WRX it's first notable success. This was covered by the BBC on Top Gear, it was in Autosport Magazine and it was in EVO magazine. It is now in the Guiness Book of World Records. You wont find a single mention of my name in any because like most projects i get involved in, i help out with my technical input and the driver gets all the exposure. Thats fine by me.
You really dont have a clue what projects i have contributed to Alex, i wont bother listing any of them here because i have nothing to prove to anyone.
Have a great Xmass.

Here you insult Gary and I, by telling us that something we did turned this forum into a peice of crap. It took Gary some time to discuss this with SOA and come up with appropriate questions. It took me some time to figure out a best way to set this whole thing up. And YOU are going to tell me that we turned something into crap?!?!?

You weren't blunt. You were out of line. This is my peice of critisism.
I know that you are bright when it comes to motorsports and cars in general. But, that doesn't mean that you can just run your mouth and expect me to listen to you when you show no respect or prior knowledge to THIS particular case.
To further prove my point, look over the treads. Look at the response we got and only YOU, your buddy Squire and a handfull of i Clubbers do not like our idea and our approach.
The reason I brough the WRX World REcord here, is to show you how it feels when someone bashes your work. You are the one who truly has a problem with "self agrandissement", not me, as Squire said.
No flame wars here. Just my statements to try to show you that you need to think few times more before you run your mouth HERE on other people (not me).

I am quite open to critisism and am prepaired to listen to it. It's pretty obvious that you dont like people being completely direct and to the point. I was not out of line, i was expressing an opinion, because you dont agree with that opinion doesnt mean it has no validity.
I will always tell it as i see it and if i am wrong then i expect people to tell me why i am wrong. I dont expect to have someone threaten me with deleting my posts because i expressed an opinion.
I always try and keep within the spirit of the BBS rules and i dont need my "budies" to back me up. Freedom to post what you want is fundemental to this BBS being a success as long as we dont break the rules. I did not break any rules.
There was no insult intended Gary, i wish you luck.
If you want to discuss this further Alex then lets take it offline.

Kind of OT here but I believe posting these polls on a Subaru board will definetly show a bias. If you want to get a more precise answer I would consider doing some more agregate research and post polls on other sites as well.

Is it just me?
:( Did anyone else NOT understand that Gary AND Alex were working together on this project. I, personally, didn't realize they knew each other & just thought it was a ton of poll threads set out by a member. I wasn't sure that was allowed by the rules. I read and just stayed quiet as I'm sure alot of others did, no matter which side of the fence they sit on. I had no idea how much work had gone into brand/club specific polls. Guess it's just me.
BTW, this is more entertaining than the game on TV. But it should stop here. :o Pissing contests get boring very quickly.
Congratulations & Good Luck Gary, in all your racing efforts.
I have sought recognition/help from Subaru for the past 10 years. I have always been successful yet I am still a privateer. Manufacturers don't take internet participation very seriously but I hope they keep an eye out for your successes. At least they sponsor the TV coverage now. That's good right?
Happy Holidays EVERYONE. :)

You are right Damian. And manufactureres don;t take internet stuff seriously because it is a sign of being lazy. If people want to get funding and stuff, write a business plan out or do some REAL research. It takes a long time and some money.
The internet is a great tool but for trying to get people to take notice, but it is the least personal way to do business and manufacturers are going to look for some hardbound data.

It's nice to see so many marketing experts here
If I'm not mistaken, Gary and SMR already have a sponsorship, and relationship, with the Subaru Marketing people. To presume that this is the only thing he is doing for his proposal, that there is no other research, no other insight, no business plan, seems like a lot of just that.....unfounded presumption. He did SOMETHING right to get a sponsorship the first time, obviously. My guess is he knows them better than most you you seem to know so much about this topic. Give the guy the benefit of the doubt.
I was just looking over the polls themselves, and thinking about the "bias" and "convert" comments. Well, I dunno, but If I'm SOA, and I see a bunch of Subaru-biased converts saying overwhelmingly that a Mitsubishi EVO (which will likely be competing in US roadracing/Speedvision) is going to be a strong threat to my WRX sales, then I might think that is more compelling than a bunch of non-Subaru people saying the same thing. I might take that pretty seriously, indeed. As for the other polls, about TV and what not, my read is that they are only there so that the one I just mentioned didnt stick out so much.
Actually, seems pretty smart to me. Good work, Gary.

I guess this means Gary is paying you some unspecified sum of money to be allowed to spam everywhere?

:( I never claimed to know what, if any, relationship Sheeham Motorsports has with Subaru. I applaud anyone who makes efforts to have manufacturers involvement in recreational activities of any kind, motorsports or other. Most of us in N.Am. would not know of amateur/grassroots sports if it were not for corporate involvement. They place ads for exposure & in return we get to watch our locals/countrymen complete.
I'm done.
Merry Christmas.:D

The motorsports forum does look like crap. I wish Gary all the best with his racing program but six sticky polls is a tad much.

Let me clarify that my posts about how to market and stuff earlier in this forum were not an attack on Gary or anyone else. just stating an oppinion.

Oh, and the reason the forum is "presented" by teamSMR is i Club's attempt to promote Professional Subaru Road Racing and educate people that Subaru's do road race. No one is paying no one for this.

Another thing, the polls will remain sticky until Thursday.

I cleaned up the forum and going to close this thread as it is not going anywhere. If anyone has an urge to complain about me or how I run this place, feel free to post it in General.
