Suzuka Discussion & Senna Vid

Ahead of this weekend's Grand Prix of Japan, I thought you all might like to see this clip of Senna during a pole-taking qually lap.
Senna-Suzuka
Watch his hands. Notice how jerky it was then (manual steering) and check out the manual shifts.
And for comparision - here's Kimi in the first qually session in '03:

Suzuka.
In my humble opinion, one of the all time great tracks to drive in the world. Be smooth, hold your lines and you will be rewarded with good lap times.

WOW!
I've always been a huge Senna fan and that was a nice little present I haven't seen before.
The speed is staggering. Amazing how different the cars are today compared to 10-12 yrs ago. Todays F1 looks like a one is driving a cadillac compared to that video.
Thank you WRXinfx

Simply awesome!
It looks like he is riding a cannon ball. I love the manual shifts and how notchy every thing in that generations of cars were.

Hard to believe also that Senna's pace ( that was either 1991 or 1992) was in the
1minute40~41 second range....
The circuit has only one minor revision IIRC, adding 3 meters or so, but Rubens B.(2003) has fast qualifying 1.31 and fastest race lap was about 1.33............
Watching Senna...can you imagine doing that circuit now, 8 to 10 seconds faster

Major typhoon set to hit Suzuka on Saturday
| gtguy | 10-07-2004 12:12 PM |
Suzuka predictions....

1. MS (he's angry, and Suzuka is his kind of track)
2. RB (loves Suzuka, but won't have the speed for MS this weekend)
3. TS (geeked for the home crowd, will podium)
4. KR (he won't break...)
5. FA (Suzuka is the Renualt's kind of track)
6. JV (yes, Jacques is going to work it hard)
7. JB (I know...no way he's this far down)
8. RS (Ralf will be fast, but not fast enough)
I know, I'm leaving some good folks out. It could all be different, particularly if herr Schumacher spins out in qualifying again, or if that typhoon shows up.

1. MS (finally decides RB had won enough races... haha)
2. KR (always strong if the car holds up)
3. RB (not a bad result... higher if it rains)
4. JB (or maybe even podium if his SS engine is reliable)
5. TS (always strong in his home race... easily in the points if the SS engine is reliable)
6. FA (Renault is fading)
7. JPM
8. JV (I hope he does better but it takes at least a couple of races to get up to speed when you take 1 year out of F1)
The BS runners (Ferrari, Sauber) should be very strong for qualifying and the race if it rains... right now there is a 100% probability of rain on Saturday and 60% for the race. Damn, maybe I should revise my predictions...

| BillT | 10-07-2004 03:23 PM |
My Suzuka picks:
1. MS - wants to make up for last week and last year's Japan performance
2. RB - Back in his normal position, 2nd to MS
3. KR - Best of the non-red cars
4. JB - Faster than Takuma, but the Honda's won't compete for a podium
5. TS - shows flashes of brilliance, but he's not good enough to consistently beat any of the people listed above
6. JPM - on cruise control, will probably bitch about the car being crappy
7. GF - More points for Sauber!
8. JT - Toyota gets a point in its homeland.
I'll be on a plane to London during the race making it only the second race I've missed all season (the first was China due to my cable being out because of the last hurricane). I hope to be able to catch some kind of repeat when I land on Sunday morning.

Awesome video, talk about nearly losing it at the chicane!
Jenson takes his first win !!! :)
TS
MS
KR
RB
FA
Honda have a special engine for this race and with the BAR front torque transfer system they should be better than most in the wet under braking.

Amazing video of Senna. I wish I had exposure to F1 back then.. What a difference!
I'm in for:

JV
FA
JPM
Giancarlo hook me up with a few more points!
We'll be in Montreal this weekend so I'm going to try to stay up late and watch the race in English on TSN. (As I've been Speed-less since 2002 and watching the races in French this is a rare treat! :D )

apparently qualification has been delayed until Sunday morning... not sure what that means for the speed broadcast...
| wrxinfx | 10-08-2004 10:38 AM |
Does anybody know when the last time it rained in Suzuka? I've been watching F1 since '96 and don't recall seeing it rain there (not that I can trust my memory!)
| TimStevens | 10-08-2004 10:47 AM |
Rained in 94, they just had the decade race there in the rain. Not sure about since...
| artkevin | 10-08-2004 10:57 AM |
I looked on Speedtv.com and couldn't find anything about rescheduled qualifying coverage. They are probably obligated to show something related to one of there 35 different NASCAR programs at that time. I hope we get to see it.
| TimStevens | 10-08-2004 11:01 AM |
Qualifying will apparently be at about 7:00 pm eastern, or something like that. There's a rebroadcast of F1 qualifying scheduled for later that night, there's a chance they'll show it then. I'm taping that time just in case...

Didn't even realize the whole timezone/dateline thing was going to make practice happen last night until I went to watch something to put me to sleep and there it was on the TiVo. Started watching 20 minutes in or so, and caught up to the end without watching a single commercial.... Needless to say I didn't make it to sleep. Yeehaw!

Looks like Ma-On has passed on, and left Suzuka unscathed, though certainly sodden. It's headed for Tokyo at present. The question now is about weather conditions. If it's suddenly a dry race, EVERYBODY is going to be scrambling.

This was sort of scary when Barrichello missed the final chicane (and actually other times when drivers mess up the final chicane) David Hobbs and I have been saying the exact same things.
| gtguy | 10-10-2004 04:19 PM |
Uh...wow. When Schumacher has something to prove, watch out. He even got a good start. I couldn't believe that in 13 laps, he got enough of a gap to pit and come out in the lead from the BARs. Scary stuff.
Looks like Woobins and DC's coming together was more the red car's optimism, but we don't know for sure, because we were watching Sato adjust something or other, then Sato driving around, then Sato...you get it. Being a homer is one thing, but that was just shameful.
There is Button, third again with a fine drive, and redemption for R. Schumacher. All in all, a fine race, even if the outcome was never, ever in doubt. I think that even from the first practice session, M. Schu was on a mission. There was no way he was going to lose this race, though the dominance displayed, particularly in a car upon which Ferrari has done no development work, is pretty amazing.
Now, on to Brazil, another track at which M. Schumacher has something to prove, after becoming part of the unofficial Interlagos F1 Parking Facility last year.

I am just happy the race even happened. Stupid Ma-on.
Does anybody know what Sato was doing with his head/hand? Is it the same thing that happend to Jenson in Germany? If so it seems to me like it could be an aero problem of the BAR becuase I have never seen any driver much less two from the same team have to hold their helmet down on straights.

I missed the speed guys showing the Rubens/DC event after the race (I can only stomach about 15 mins of post-race coverage before I get bored, and apparently it was after that), but I saw this animated gif of the incident in case anyone else missed it:

Looks to me like Rubens (on the inside) was being awfully optimistic and wouldn't have made the turn.

I agree, Woobin's line or maybe trajectory is a better term, is going pretty straight when he should be arcing in.
| gtguy | 10-11-2004 11:04 AM |
Looks like Barrichello pulled a Sato. And if he was, as he said, "two seconds" per lap faster than Coulthard, why force a pass at that point? In post-race comments, Barrichello said he was hoping to "surprise" Coulthard. I'd say he did, but not all surprises are pleasant ones.
Kevin
Kevin
| OnTheGas | 10-11-2004 06:02 PM |
The pity about Rubens is that he had the fastest car on the track at that time... that crash cost him a podium position perhaps. He passed his favorite fellow South American driver, Montoya, while Montoya was riding Trulli's butt, in that slow Toyota. Trulli was probably a second per lap slower than Montoya, but Montoya wasn't able to pull off the pass. Rubens came up on those two, did a couple of laps behind them, then ate Montoya on one lap, and ate Trulli on the next lap. Then Rubens opened up the Ferrari in some clear air, and quickly set fast lap of the race. He was lapping about a second faster per lap than those folks residing between him, and 2nd place.
So for Rubens, it was hero, or zero, when he made his move on Coulthard. As David called it, "...a bit too optimistic, perhaps..."
The best battles are often not broadcast by the locals... but they are always clear as a bell on Formula1.com's live timing.
Interesting things that I notice post-race... JV admits that his car beat him up... he was exhausted during his last stint... And he had been training hard to get back into the seat. I wonder what Flavio thinks about JV, now that Renault has been pushed back into 3rd position in the constructors?
And Ralfie beat Jenson, Takuma, Kimi, Montoya... he won best in class... nice drive!

Did you guys catch what the SpeedTV commentators said about the Button contract dispute? That Button's people acted on seeing a contract from Honda on someone's desk, and after taking into account the dates mentioned, realized JB's contract was null - ACCEPT the contract was not the main one between B.A.R and Honda, but some other contract(!!!) If this turns out to be true - wow what a farce. I guess JB really want's out to take that risk.
| artkevin | 10-13-2004 12:05 PM |
He has got to have one of the worst managment teams ever! Even if the contract is valid they handled Button-gate like crap. They are going to end up pissing off everyone envoled. BAR might have a driver might not. If they get him he wont want to be there. Anthony Davidson, Mika Hakkeinen, David Coulthard and who knows who else might or might not have a drive for BAR. Williams might have a driver or might not. Button can't be on Honda's happy list.

*bows* .. Thanks :D If I hadn't missed my picks for Monte Carlo I'd be up near the top too.
Roll on Brazil.. Let's hope 2004 will be far less eventful than 2003. In 6 years of watching F1 I don't recall gasping out loud as I did when Alonso rounded that blind corner and slammed into the debris across the track.. Only perhaps Burti's crash at Spa and the BAR's crashes at Eau Rouge years ago come to mind as comparable in recent times.

Good picks, Lord Bass. I need either Ken March or Jim Rider to have a disaster at Brazil to podium for the year. Wishing brain fades for you both! I had a couple of weeks where I choked. Points equivalent of a DNF.
Remember: OnTheGas has committed Krispy Kreme's for all podium finishers.

Thx all. Must have been a little divine intervention or something. :)
Krispy Kreme's? Looks like a battle for 5th for us, Steve. Williams or McLaren. JPM or Trulli. Ah well, there's always next year.
