Sweet!!...so I got the 2nd-fastest time of the day in my FIRST RallyCross!!!!

the run groups (3) were divided into Stock, Modified and Open....in the stock class there were close to 10 WRX/STi's that that participated.....the largest showing of any single make (in ALL classes) was subaru.
I beat EVERY single stock car there except for one (a mazda 323 AWD)....and every single stock WRX......
in my rental corolla!....it just goes to show that just because you drive an AWD subaru, does not make you instantly good at driving on gravel....
i've got pictures if anyone wants to see...but this forum won't let me post them

San Diego.
i'm pretty sure that was a mk2 escort...but it was right-hand drive...some dude from new zeland was driving it....all i know is that it sounded like a 2-stroke dirtbike when it ran.
he ran some blistering times with it though

the guy with the cozy was leon styles, he won pikes peak this year and also owned tombstone paintball park where we used to rally-x 5 or 6 times a year until the land was taken away by the city last month
this event was run at the del mar fair grounds in San Diego CA
I wish I could have made it out but unfortunatly Im in NM on business right now so that wasnt an option.
Dont forget teh nest event is on Feb 11th and 12th in Ridgecrest CA

Were trying to put a few evenst toether right now but they will not be associated with CRS.
If you havent been to Ridgecreast School you should go. its a fun weekend with a ton of good pepole and a ton of seat time.

Cool. I was really impressed with how you guys took the events to the next level over the past couple years. Just sucks about Tombstone, I can't believe that happened. As for CRS.. personally I don't care about the points (I wouldn't be winning any anyway) I just wanna play in the dirt :D
Hmm.. maybe I'll give Ridgecrest a shot..

Yeah, you've learned your first lesson of rallycross... your car doesn't mean jack. If the weather is dry, usually a handful of Sentras and Neons take top honors over all the Subarus where I rallycross. Regardless of the weather, new drivers in STIs and Evos get absolutely smacked by 15 year old station wagons driven by somebody who's rallycrossed a few times.
So, just curious, you signed on to a Subaru website you had never been to before just to tell us you beat some Subarus?

that was the worst-run event ever.
they had too many entries in the third class...SUPPOSEDLY, they were gonna run 2 runs each, run the other two classes and then run each class one turn (as the surface got faster).
but then they decided that third class (BIGGEST) was gonna run ALL their runs...that made that run group almost 4 hours long!....by then, i had to be back home (hour and a half away) to return the rental. they would not let me run my run out-of-turn...by the end of the day, the surface was actually QUITE fast (as seen by the times posted in the third runs). i for one will never support this rally again because of ****ty management...
i even asked if i could just run and be out-of-the-money...just for fun...and he said no citing time concerns...i figured a run is a run...my 80-something seconds woulda been the same 80-something seconds regardless of if i did it at 3pm or 5pm....whatever

I had a blast, great venue beautiful weather, cars, girls...
Big thanks to John of Rally Innovations for letting me drive his car, I'm addicted now and may have to give up a few autocrosses in SD to run some more rally.
If I do this more often I need to remember that time is cumulative. I improved 7 seconds from run 1 to run 3. I'm used to autocross which is of course fastest time counts.
My fastest clean run was an 81.xxx which would have been competitive in the AWD Open class but not second fastest of the day in my SECOND EV4r event!

Leon just imported the `73 Ford Escort MkII from New Zealand less than three weeks ago. This was the first event where the car 'officially' hit dirt. For a little 1600cc engine that thing hauled ass while screeming up to its 9k redline. And was tail out the whole way....

As the announcer and close friends with the organizers, you don't know jack. You obviously have never been to a motorsports event and don't know how logistically challenging it is to get over 80 drivers more than one run in a day....much less three or four.
You were begging me to run again and we had to tell you no. You don't budget 4 hours for a rallycross, autocross or whatever. It's an all day thing. You had the rental for 24 hours, why did you have to bring it home? Would you also be complaining if you had to work the course while others were racing? Because that's very typical in autocrossing.
Having gone to rallycrosses and autocrosses for over 5 years, and seen all types of organizing, this was the most well run, smooth event I have ever been in. The OPEN class guys were combined into 3 runs to minimize the time in between run groups. No split into 3 runs means one whole less transition, typically a 20 minute event. But you wouldn't know that because you have to point out that your runs were spaced out over the day.
Whaaa.
And so what if you beat everyone in the rental car. I've won the championship in CRS 2WD for the past two years in rentals, and it was easy.
We're glad you won't be coming back.

Yes, the timing stuff was screwed up.
Yes, the course got much faster and three times as wide in some places.
No, it was not the best run event I've been to (come see how SD Regional does autox).
All I know is this: I was one of the stock subbies running with falkens and I was excited that I posted competitive times (plus, I suck at racing; very new). The FF cars were posting better times than the AWD, and one of the instructors said the course favored FF slightly (some favor AWD, some favor FF). I would have had a decent score if I could have still seen ok when I ran my 3rd run (right as the sun set, so I was partially blind), but instead I missed a gate.
Same organizers or not, I'd do it again. :D
Yes, the course got much faster and three times as wide in some places.
No, it was not the best run event I've been to (come see how SD Regional does autox).

I've stood in a non-moving registration line for nearly an hour despite being in the first work group (and then got chewed out by some old cranky a-hole in tech for being late!? and then got chewed out again by a different old cranky a-hole for being late to the work group :furious: ) at a SD Regional autox before.
The dirt events are (were?) a lot more laid back and the people friendlier.

I've seen problems with the work groups. I once helped out at an earlier work group instead of my normal, and they came looking for me. Since I was down for the other group, it was easy.
The dirt group was more laid back. Good: no cranky a-hole. Bad: 6 hour wait between my 2nd and 3rd runs. I'd rather deal with a cranky a-hole for 5 minutes (or even two cranky a-holes) than sit on my ass for 6 hours, but that's just me.
Plus, we were supposed to get 4 runs, not 3. I feel slightly gypped.

Hopefully they can hone the rallyx organization to perfection without any cranky a-holes. :)

actually, i DO know A LOT about organizing MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH bigger events than these...in fact, that's what i do for a living :) (i organize factory GM, MBZ, Toyota, et al. events)....we get 30k people in and out our gates in one weekend.....80 drivers? that would be cake.
so next time, don't presume.

Not if we took away your budget and staff, made you find your own venue without manufacturer backing and made the driving events timed instead of MBZ's "OhMyGodPleaseDon'tDriveOurCarsFast" courses.
But hey, put your money where your mouth is, Pal:
If you're such hot **** organizing these events, we can always use another good one in San Diego or Orange Counties. Get to it!! :disco: :disco:

He probably works the gate at the GM arrive and drives. BTW, those have a budget of millions of dollars and this event was done with pocket change (relatively speaking).

...not trying to add to the 'hate', but I did laugh out loud at the 'Please don't drive our cars fast' bit b/c it's so true! (at least at the GM events).
However, my friends and I discovered that if you pick the crappiest ****-box to 'test' drive, you can rip around on 2 wheels and they don't give a flip... they're too busy yelling at people doing burnouts in the GTO's
"Aveo-Challenge" is not just a name, it's a competition around here when GM's show comes around :D ... pile 4 people into one, you can usually hot-lap it and do the fire-drill at the starting-line b/c no one but no one is waiting in line to drive one :disco:

Is someone timing each lap to compare or is this just a "thrash someone else's car" bit?
