The Best Sounding Race Car Ever.....
What is the best sounding race car that you ever heard ??
For me;
The Audi Sport Quattro "Group B", with about 650 Bhp from a 2.1 Liter 5 cylinder, Ripping up some remote forest road at about 100 mph lined with trees............"That sounded beautiful to me :)"

I've heard Andy Burton's Cosworth DTM engined Peugeot sounds pretty mean. Here's a clip: freespace.virginnet.co.uk/down.loadz/burton.exe
It's some sort of weird video format with an integral viewer. Don't worry--it's not a virus.

Of the cars I've heard, the one that sticks out in my mind is the Havspeed Prorally RX-7. That thing sounds like a monster commin up on you in the woods! I've got a special love of wanks tho...... My first car was a 1st gen RX-7. :)

Jon, we compete against Andy. great bloke.
You should have heard his alfa-ferrari. Now that thing sounded awesome in the forests!! His Pug-cossie is awesome too. Mind you last evet he blew up about 100 yards after passing me in stage. didnt sound that nice then.
For me the Ultimate sound is either a V12 ferrari F1 engine or a Can-Am McLaren M8F. The McLaren you feel rather than hear, all 9 litres of it!!!!!! :D

'57 - 59 Ferrari TR. Nuthin' like it.
I did however love the sound of the F1 Renault 1.5 Turbos from the early - mid 1980ies.

That Havas RX-7 really was something else at Cherokee Trails. On one stage, I heard it coming while it was still a minute behind the Evo cresting the hill coming toward us. Loud.

I have a lot of favorites, sorry. :D
V8-- unquestionably, Top Fuel dragsters. Pick one, and bring your earplugs to the first row at the 1/8th mile so you can FEEL it too.
V12-- mid-late 80s Jaguar GTU Prototype. nice roar...
Rotary-- same era as above, Mazda RX7 3 rotor GTU Prototype. Nothing sounds like that 3 rotor.
Next year after too many seasons of mufflers, the noise comes back to motorcycle racing. Then I'll pick a favorite motorcycle sound.

Standing in speed alley, and watching Strega (V-12 Merlin) ao Rare Bear (R-16 I think) come over the top at 400+ miles an hour
Also the one time I went to Bonneville speed flats, and watched some of those guys, ohhhhh boy.

Airplanes and cars
Now were talking....
P-51 has got to have one of the nicest sounding engines in the world!
Any front line fighter such as F-14, F-16, F-15, etc are also music to my ears. I love that deep rumble of a jet.
Oh yeah and the cars, gotta give it up to Formula 1, especially when they are accelerating.

Man, I havent heard too many REAL race cars (in person, not on TV) but I was at the Canadian GP this year, and DAMN, GP cars are INSANE!! You wouldnt expect it, but each one sounds different! They make such a sick noise when decelarating! And theyre DAMN LOUD! Bring earplugs!
BTW, if anyone ever wants to come to the Canadian GP, we'll hook up! :D

Here are my choices:
Grp. B Audi
F1 - When they had turbos.
CART cars when they shift.
My race scooter riding down my alley...I love 2 strokes.
My old Kawasaki S3 2 stroke motorcycle (triple cylinder 400 cc).
Here's a funny story about the S3...I used to live right off Western Ave. & Roscoe here in Chicago and the bar that I frequented was on Damen & Roscoe. Not that far away, perhaps 2/3 of a mile. Western is a busy street so it's prety noisy but my firend said that he knew when I would be off to the bar when I would start that thing up. It had stock pipes on it as well. :D

it would have to be a ferrari. Their engines are like music. had a f355 pull away from me. My god. I crapped in my pants.
Also sounded bad ass was the BMW M3 at petite LeMans. What a screamer.
oh yeah, my alarm is a f1 mclaren reving and then gunning it every morning. last for like 30 secs and i have it running on 4 speakers at full volume. First time it went off, I scared my roommate to death.
Try sleeping through that.

I would have to say the 20V 5cyl Audi either in the Grp B rally car or in the IMSA cars. I also like the McLaren and the reason they sound so distinctive is because for the last two seasons the exhaust has been ducted out through the rear diffuser below the car. It sounds like a V-12.
