Wow, someone either forgot where the brake was, or didn't walk the course at all.
I have to say, that is pretty impressive being stuck up on an angle like that.

Damn that sucks. *** was he doing? And yes, like KC said, you would never see a straight-away like that at the begining of an auto-x, especially one setup that close to a tree.
Was that the megan racing 350Z?
I found it! HAhAHAHAHHajhfdsjkfhasdf it was the megan car.

Its easy to confuse the 350Z's engine note over whatever else is on course making the loud noises. At the start you can hear the 350Z make the low grumble, which distinguishes it from the loud 'braaaap' of the other car on course.
The car is throwing up a white cloud from the chalk-line a moment before it hits the curb. Horrible course design (especially for a drift club), as you can see that the outside of the turn is a few yards from the curb.
I would be suprised if that thing was on the front right bumpstop when he tried trail-braking (to induce a drift) which caused him to understeer wildly.

I'm hoping that the original poster could make an edit to say that this wasn't an autox event. Videos like this and the infamous Corvette hitting someone are how all of the autox-are-dangerous folks get their fodder. :)

Wow, What a crazy thing to happen at a DRIFT EVENT!
So this is what a DRIFT EVENT is like?
I feel bad for that DRIFTER because he didn't get into his DRIFT and then proceeded to DRIFT into the tree.
I can't wait to try DRIFTING because it looks way more dangerous than autoX.
ok...all kidding aside
Why would a drift event be set up so close to public areas and walkways. It would be nice to see what the rest of the course and lot was like. I feel bad for the Megan team it looked like a really nice car.

Justin
It was pretty open. Entrance to the drift event was controlled access (but there are other ways in). And there's not much in the way of housing on that side of the lot (it abuts highway/freeway)... so not really any danger being 'too close' to anything. Here's the lot: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=32.252269,59.238281&q=qualcomm+stadium&ll=32.78575,-117.11724&spn=0.004176,0.007231&t=h
The camera angle and depth of field can make it lookj like the pedestrians are just on the other side of the wall, but could actually be about 20+ feet away.

Yeah, I figured the camera angle made it look really bad. I am amazed the car had enough rear grip and lack of front grib to scub the tires in a straight line for so long. You'd figure a little blip of power would have got the back end coming around for the guy. You just feel bad for them. :(

With wheels in full lock? Good luck with that. You can see a little wobble like he was trying to set up a flick, but it looks like when the car straightened out, it got grip instead of having the rear come out the other way.

Not that I'm a drifter or even like it, or understand it, but....
For all you motorsports guys that don't know, you get more 'drift points' when you do it near objects (curbs, walls, etc). Most drift events lack on crown control and they are not as safe with spectators as they should be. However, for 'drifting', this course being close to solid objects WAS properly setup, at least in teh eyes of a drifter. If it was a big open parking lot drifters wouldn't be able to score more drift points and such, and they wouldn't like to run it.
All of us can 'drift' around in an open parking lot. Few of us can do a 720 deg turn around a light post with the backend loose....

When I was watching it last night, it looked like he tried to turn right before turning left (upsetting the balance to get the back to come around), but didn't do it hard enough to upset the balance. He was in 4th (you can hear him on the sound) and turned hard left at the same time as he locked up all 4 wheels.
Since he couldn't get the car to rotate, he was screwed. I'd probably make the same mistake if I had gone out there, so nothing against his skill level (although his speed was a bit high for the space available).

Yeah drift is new and most clubs don't have old-timers running teh show, there are no old timers. As the event get bigger and they hold them at actual motorsports venues, dirfting is going to change... Real venues either won;t let drift events go on till they get serious about crowd control or venues will charge ALOT more for events and the venues will manage everything.
In some respects, its not the organizers fault; they post / explain rules to spectators and have folks that try to enforce and so on.... They just don't have enough folks to manage the type spectators that come to drift. At an autoX, 1 guys can manage the start gate. Now imagine 100 young/dumb/wreckless folks that like to spectate autoX and they all want to crowd around the start gate or stand in the middle of the slalom cause they'll get laid if they do and their buddies in the cars will get more autoX points.

Two words: cattle-prod.
More seriously, I can see that problem. The one argument I have against the bit about "it's gotta be next to the big cement object" thing is even in the videos I've seen of drifting there they have room to run off and have soft objects to hit if they get too close to the spectators. Are we trying to be more crazy, more kamikaze than the Japanese?
Note: I am not against the Japanese in any form or way.

Yeah, as the 'sport' grows they will get more reasonable... 10 years down teh road they will have a much better scoring system, like modern figure-skating, and the crowds will be older and more mature, like Nascar.

And if true, I think special lots with 8' x 8' concrete barriers should be constructed to let Darwin decide their fate.
Dude, you could put one of those on yourself and market it as an "Xtreme" level event.
If this is correct, then I retract any statements I've made on the relative merits of drifting.

It is correct, ask an experianced drifter if they would rather drift with or with out curbs or walls and they'll tell you whats up. It still won't make much sense but neither does professional ice curling...

I assume they have a full service bar on site? There is one in NE-Ohio that doesn't serve alcohol and I just can't imagine that game being all that much fun without some serious beer intake.

First thing I thought when I saw the video before reading the rest of the thread was. "This is either a drift event and the guy is a newb or it was an auto-x and the guy was trying to steer with the thootle". :(
WOW, that was a hard it. Probably scaried the piss out of the spectators that were sitting there on the other side of the wall.
