This winter's project: fixing $11,000 of damage to my rex
As many of you probably know a tree fell on my rex last month, well I started fixing it and ordering new parts today and I have some pics.

I also need to fix the windows, dents in the doors, a mirror and the passenger front door handle.

It's gonna be a busy winter. :)

SonicYelloWRX 12-21-2003 06:33 PM

Damn, that tree must have been pretty big to do that much damage in that many places!!!
WRXMikeH 12-21-2003 06:52 PM

That sucks.. Good luck fixing it all. Did you not have insurance?
the2rz 12-21-2003 07:14 PM

yea........no insurance?

good luck!
kenshiro 12-21-2003 08:01 PM

Oh hell yeah I have insurance. That woulda totally sucked if I didn't. The cool thing is that they cut me a big fat check so I'm using the money to buy all aftermarket parts and I'm doing all the work myself. My friend who paints cars for a living is going to spray it for me in a shop after I fix all the dents. It's nice knowing people that are into cars, comes in handy when you need help with stuff you don't know how to do yourself.

I fixed that under fender in the first pic. I just bent it back to place by hand. And I bent the trunk back into place by hand too but it's not good enough.

Anyways, I'm done working on this crap for now, I'm cold as hell. I need to buy a heater for the garage. I'll post some pics when I get farther. Next time I'm going to remove the interior and start pushing some dents out. Laters.
allanak 12-21-2003 08:33 PM

What's a Kalimari hood? Aren't those what I ate last night? j/k heheh

Oh yeah hahaha, kaminari kalimari whatever. :D
Full_Clip 12-21-2003 08:39 PM

ken, guessing they didn't total your car. Anyway, are you tackling all the body work yourself?

BTW, clean your IC foo'!

Full_Clip wishes you good luck with the work ahead.
kenshiro 12-21-2003 08:48 PM

hey what's up dude. long time no post er whatever.

Yeah dude, part of me wanted it totalled, but then I got thinking that it would totally suck because I owe almost as much as it's worth, so I woulda ended up with no rex and no money. That woulda totally sucked. This is much cooler because I get all the mods I've been wanting to do but couldn't afford and also get my car fixed.

Baldturbofreak is gonna help with the work. He's the one who owns the welders and some of the tools I don't have. If we totally can't do something we'll just pay this other guy to come over and help out. Also, btf's uncle owns a shop so if we need a lift we can drive it over there all busted up, hahaha, that'd be great.
Dick Fitzwell 12-21-2003 11:11 PM

holy ****....a tree?

damn man, good luck, sounds like you got your work cut out for you!
scobaru 12-22-2003 12:03 AM

so after your car is fixed how much money will you end up with extra?
u should of gotten WRC style fenders :D
kenshiro 12-22-2003 12:10 AM

Yeah a tree. That was a bad day, I was pissed.

If I woulda restored it back to stock condition I woulda had about $7K left over after it was fixed, but I'm upgrading it while I fix it, so I should only have like $3K in the end. And that'll probably go to new gears or something.
Blitzkrieg 12-22-2003 12:18 AM

how hard is it to take off the passenger side fender? Does the fender have any hidden screws?

Sorry about all the questions, but i half to re repair my crappy body guys screw up. Dumb ass, even put a blob of overspray on my bumper...

mbeach 12-22-2003 12:24 AM

A tree??

Looks like a whole forest fell on your car!

Good luck with the work, keep us up on the progress.
Dick Fitzwell 12-22-2003 12:31 AM

i wasnt for sure if how serious you were being when you said a tree 'fell' on your car, that's crazy! anymore to the story? hopefully you weren't cutting down that particular tree when it fell on your car

It's not too hard, it takes about 5 or 10 minutes to get it off. You need to take the plastic side sill off by unsnapping the little snappy things, then you gotta undo the plastic in the wheel well (it's easier if you jack it up and take the wheel off), then open up the door and there two nuts you need to unscrew, one way at the bottom and one up higher. Then there's 4 nuts you need to unscrew up top under the hood. Then you have to take the front grill off by pushing in the plastic tabs, then take the headlight out so you can get at the snap on things under there. Actually maybe it'll take like 30 minutes, I forgot how much stuff needs to come off. And you gotta be careful when you pull it off because they bend pretty easy.

There was a big huge wind storm up here that day. A top of a tree broke off, flew over the house and landed on the corner of my car. Luckily a few things stopped the tree before it hit the car, so it wasn't as bad as it coulda been.

I wasn't as unlucky as some people though. This lady was driving down the street by my work that day and a tree fell right on her car as she drove by it and crushed her. They mention it in this article: http://www.canoe.com/CNEWS/Canada/2003/11/13/256693-cp.html

"A driver in Victor, N.Y., was killed when a tree toppled by the wind struck her car"
kenshiro 01-13-2004 12:24 AM

Made some progress. The whole front end is pretty much fixed. Now we're working on the doors, roof and rear quarter panels.

Just what are you trying to say?!

Looks like the restoration is coming along, that's good to see.
subywrxwrblu 01-13-2004 06:54 PM

looks good so far..

You should get the STi back window that has the rear wiper, that would be cool.
Doughboy 01-13-2004 07:38 PM

you are one hardcore foo, ken.

by far one of the best (and most extreme) undertakings on the forum. now i'm all anxious to see the end product of your hard work!
Spoolin16PSI 01-13-2004 07:41 PM

Tree=1
WRX=0

Cant wait to see it when it's done
kenshiro 01-13-2004 08:06 PM

Ha, I didn't even think about the STi rear window with the wiper. That woulda probably cost a lot though. I got a good deal on the replacement window, something like $150.

I'm not working on it tonight, I need a break. We were in there for like 5 hours last night.
Sauceboy01 01-13-2004 08:26 PM

Why dont you just get an 04 front end with chargespeed bumper kit? one members Already did this, looks great!

RallyFord 01-14-2004 12:29 AM

Sorry to hear about the loss man, that's bomb a$$ you're doing the work yourself! Props bro.

I sell auto insurance for a living and I'm not sure what state you live in, but some states have laws that you have to disclose any damage over certain amounts to whomever you sell it to. Any smart buyer will find it on a CLUE check of the VIN like CarFax. Anyways, the insurance companies don't like to disclose this, but if you're state has that law and your damage was over that amount ($5000) in Iowa, they have to reimburse you for the loss that you will take on the resale. I hate to see people get dicked over by claims agents. I hope they compensated you for that, and if they didn't you may still be able to get that out of them with some effort, that is if you're state has that law.
RallyFord 01-14-2004 12:57 AM

Doh. Didn't see before that you're from NY. Here's the NY insurance commissioner's website. Besides giving a lot of basic information about auto policies you can look at the rates by company for your territory based on a 20yr old unmarried male.

http://www.ins.state.ny.us/cauto.htm
128d 01-14-2004 11:43 AM

Damn. That is quite a job to do yourself. Good luck.
kenshiro 01-14-2004 07:49 PM

RallyFord, I don't understand all that mumbo jumbo on that site :) Do you think I should call my insurance company and get money for that?

128d, yeah dude it's a ton of work but in the end I'll have saved $7,000 in labor because I'll have done it myself. I'm using that money for more mods. Plus, it's fun learning about body work, I don't mind working on the WRX I just hate working on my POS winter car because it's all rusty.
neuspeed 01-15-2004 08:34 AM

Why wasn't the car in the garage in the first place?
kenshiro 01-15-2004 09:07 AM

No, I was cleaning the garage so it sat outside for 1 night and my luck was bad enough that the tree fell on that night.
spit_heron 01-15-2004 12:00 PM

where are/did you source the front fender?

thanks for the outline on the removal, i need to replace one as well.
RallyFord 01-16-2004 11:25 AM

kenshiro,
The best thing to do since the claim has been settled is probably to contact the insurance commissioner via phone or email and ask them about it. The Commissioner is there to help the consumer through regulation of the companies and agents. It may be that in NY there is no such disclaimer law, but it's definitlely worth asking about, never know, it could land you and extra grand or so.

I just searched the classifieds section of nasioc to find the fender. $140 shipped.

I got my new door today :)

It's got a couple scatches and it's white, but that's ok cuz I'm painted the whole car anyway.

Front end is almost done

EDIT: Oh yeah I almost forgot. Me and BTF are fabricating a full roll cage while we have the interior out. I'm going to paint the cage the same color I decide to paint the outside. It's gonna be sweet. I'm about to run 11's next summer (hopefully) so I need a roll bar anyway per IHRA rules. Actually it's 11.5's and slower but I'm planning on beating that anyway.

Sauceboy01 01-26-2004 03:19 AM

keep up with the updates.. this thread ROOOOLZ!
speedblind 01-27-2004 03:12 AM

Cool thread. And one helluva project you've got going there. Keep us updated on your progress and good luck!
Anyotherone 01-28-2004 04:36 PM

Awesome... I was going to do the same thing with my integra. I ended up with $5,000 worth of hail damage on it last April... but the car was only worth about $8K so I just saved the money for another 6 months and got a WRX.

Serious props for the restoration project!
02scoobyboi 01-28-2004 07:43 PM

Dude do you live anywhere near Albany NY? I live in Altamont. I'm j/w b/c its always fun to meet impreza owners from the area.
kenshiro 01-28-2004 07:52 PM

Naw, Rochester NY. My cousins live in Delmar though.

BTW, there haven't been any updates because I haven't gotten a chance to do anything else lately. I'm waiting for my friend to borrow some special tools for us.
piker28 01-28-2004 08:59 PM

damnn wish your hood wasnt trashed id so love that hah
kenshiro 02-01-2004 10:22 AM

We got a unispotter and started pulling dents:

Marked all the points for pulling:

Then welded a bunch of nails on there so we could pull them out:

Bolted up my new front mount intercooler too:

It took us freakin 7 hours yesterday just to pull the dents out. Kinda fun though.
imprezzed 02-02-2004 06:43 AM

sweet man, hopefully not too much keystone was ingested during the final inspection of how the work came out lol
looks good, keep us updated
kenshiro 02-02-2004 07:37 AM

Yeah Keystone is good considering it's $3.99 for a 12 pack. It honestly doesn't taste bad like the other cheap beers.

I forgot, I have a picture of my new hood:
imprezzed 02-02-2004 10:44 AM

suhhhhweeeet
kenshiro 02-24-2004 10:23 PM

OK, some updates.

I got my new driver side door. It was actually cheaper and waay less of a PITA to just buy a new door than to fix that one because of the way the door was made. I forgot to take a pic of that door though, it's black off of a '02 WRX like mine.

We started sanding the clear coat off so the new paint will stick.

I decided to paint it jet black, because black's my favorite color, it'll go good with the STi headlights and carbon fiber, plus I never liked the blue mica.

We threw some metal glaze on the minor dents. I'll be sanding it down like this weekend or sometime to make it match the lines.

It's getting there. I expect to be done like sometime in the spring or early summer...
digitaltekniq 02-24-2004 11:53 PM

Kaminari hood? What's the quality like? I'm trying to decide on a CF hood when I go FMIC - is yours the TXS Hyperflow?
digitaltekniq 02-24-2004 11:54 PM

Oh - and cool project btw :D
OCD 02-25-2004 12:08 AM

comin along nicely, can't wait to see when its done, hopefully u finish before i go back home when schools out but if not ill have to check it out when i come back for fall semester,

OCD
scobaru 02-25-2004 12:09 AM

I wish I had skills to do stuff like that :( then I wouldn't have to pay a place to fix my stupid little dings or little spots of rust

The hood is amazing. I was really impressed. It's probably the nicest CF hood I've ever seen. The FMIC is just a Greddy, I got it for $500 with all the piping.
digitaltekniq 02-25-2004 11:34 AM

Great - thanks :D
scoobydrew06 02-25-2004 01:38 PM

are you painting the hood?
kenshiro 02-25-2004 02:00 PM

Naw, I like the CF look. It's gonna be black anyway, they look good on black cars.
phreze 03-30-2004 06:37 PM

updates?
kenshiro 03-30-2004 06:52 PM

No, not really. I got my new roof last week, that's about it.

The tasks left to do are:

remove windshield
install new roof
Fix a few more dents
sand the clear coat off
paint the car
reinstall the doors, hood, trunk, fenders

I think I should be done in like two months  :)
bullseye17 05-14-2004 11:34 AM

Hey Kenshiro, lookin good! you should come visit us at buffaloscooby sometime, you have been MIA!
el bob 07-28-2004 06:40 PM

Four months later?

I really want to drive up and see both WRX and vette.
