Tinting Tail Lights part 1

markreda 08-24-2005 06:27 PM

Tinting Tail Lights
I have a 02 WRX Sedan I and was thinking of using a tint film (probably a smoked color, I hate the blacked out look) to tint the upper half of the tail lights.

I don't want to use a Tint paint.
I don't mind if the tint film isn't permenant, I can easily add new film when it goes bad.

Has anyone done this before?
mountjonas 08-24-2005 06:34 PM

this guy bluebatmobile has precut tinted vinyl for the sti. not sure if it's the right shape as the 02 lights, but you might want to give him and email.
go to bluebamobile(dot)com

i can't post url's yet.

i bought the tail tint from hot-subaru, but after putting one on...it looked like crappola. i still have the other one in a box. i could stencil in the shape and do it.

hmmm?
Subaru of Plano 08-25-2005 01:31 AM

If you are thinking about going the bat route, his are VERY THIN sign vinyl, nothing like our kits...

Ours our top shelf

They are hard to photograph on the service drive, but you get the idea.

Let is know if there is anything we can do for you.

Hot-Subaru.com, are those illegal?
Subaru of Plano 08-25-2005 11:23 PM

As they say check with your local laws ;) In TX the law is vague - aside from explicitly forbidding the use of PAINT - i.e. VHT Nightshades... They have to be visible at 1000 feet, and they are. When you get right down to it the vehicle inspector may have the final say. If you were to look at Neil's blue WRX (pictured) with our smoke covers out in the parking lot parked next to a Chevy Trailblazer we took in trade - the Trailblazer's tails were DARKER...

After they are in stalled and the adhesive is cured they look VERY clean, and you can even make out the DOT highlights, so in most cases they look similar to some of the Euro Sport Benz's and Porsche's you see with factory smoke tails.

Hope that helps

gorgeous!

you know...whenever i post pictures of my car i get hammered for having the HID blue headlight tints, but i think they look great. it really gives my car a lil' something and i've received nothing but compliments in person. hell...it's the only modification that i've done that my MOTHER even loved. i think i just might have to look into doing the reverse lights HID as well...

hmmm...

phoenix1112 08-26-2005 02:02 AM

assuming theyre just regular window tint, couldnt you just get a whole sheet of the stuff from walmart fo $20 and go nuts?
assuming theyre just regular window tint, couldnt you just get a whole sheet of the stuff from walmart fo $20 and go nuts?
The good ones are not window tint... Window tint is for the inside on glass, not for exterior use on plastic/polycarbonate.... We had a guy here is Dallas who put window tint on the headlights of his bug eye, changed his mind and went to remove them - they had bonded with the plastic/polycarbonate lend and had to be WET SANDED OFF... If you are going to experiment, do it on a car you don't care about - you know a Friends car

Keep in mind, like almost everything going with the absolutely cheapest possible way out in the short run is usually more costly in the long run...
live- 08-26-2005 11:30 AM

Damn, I love those things on StickerCity...does anyone know where to find them for wagons?

I'm kind of debating the all-black look or keep just the red showing...
boardertj 08-26-2005 05:12 PM

how do you order the bluebatmobile ones?
Diversion 08-27-2005 09:04 AM

But no turn-signal inserts for 02-03? Even though they show a picture of 02-03 versions on their website? Making a whole lot of sense.
dFunk 08-27-2005 01:13 PM

looks sweet, i'm thinking of doing that to mine also
WRXDriftR 08-27-2005 06:52 PM

i think the black would only look good on a black car...

no?

Thats what I think, but I have a black car...I think having an all-black back would look awesome.
99subi 08-27-2005 07:02 PM

u can buy some kind of spray on stuff, i ve seen it before but its perminent so just get the covers
siperwrx 08-27-2005 07:11 PM

=) I love havin' them... Rockblocker.
siperwrx 08-28-2005 10:09 PM

Oh ya, also, don't use the spray stuff (i.e. use tint spray plus clear coat spray), it works well but then you have to deal with stuff like drips, and also, it pretty much makes it a permanent mod unlike using the Rockblocker or Lamin-X which peels off just like window tint.

thats hot, if anyone wants a new set PM me, I've got an extra for the 04-05 tails, I bought a set and they don't fit the 02-03...
Javier 09-20-2005 02:06 AM

I like the hot-subaru tints, but it's too dark for me. I'd like it a bit lighter...
ScoobyRacer2 09-20-2005 02:50 AM

I have had a bitch of a time putting my tail tints on from HotSubaru.... Its almost like they are too big...
suiveam 09-20-2005 11:22 AM

Had the Hot-Subaru ones but i also think they were a little bigger. Also it was hard to properly install them on the round sourge of the 04-05 taillights.
tasq 09-20-2005 05:33 PM

quick chop to give ya an idea how it will look on silver and CGM :)

ScoobyChick4Life 09-20-2005 08:00 PM

I want some for my 95.
949 09-20-2005 08:43 PM

which ones of the pics are the ones from rockblocker? or are the rockblockers not dark enough?
tasq 09-26-2005 03:15 PM

DO NOT get the ones from stickercity.com !!! What a ripoff, they are too small to cover all the chrome, and they have a brown/yellowish tint to them...

The guy i delt with in email is kind of a prick too!
djerickd 09-26-2005 03:55 PM

Dave did u get a chance to install the ones I sold u?

is that black suby using the same decal being sold on stickercity??
Diversion 10-05-2005 11:19 PM

Such a shame they don't make them for the 02-03.. considering they have a frickin' photo of them installed on a 02-03 on their website, BUT they don't make them? I e-mailed the guy who sells them and he said that he just doesn't make them.. no reason as to why though. Fine, you don't want my money, guess i'll make my own =)
