Vanishing Digital License Plate part 1

Donzo 07-28-2006 08:24 AM

Vanishing Digital License Plate
I searched before I posted this. I thought this was an awesome idea. I had something to the same effect on my GSX-R750. It was just an actuator kit that flipped the plate down when I hit the button. This seems like a better idea lol

http://www.break.com/index/digital_license_plate.html

I'd like to know where and how much I can buy one for.
DaKP00r 07-28-2006 09:08 AM

thats pretty cool, if you find out let me know :)
arod87 07-28-2006 09:14 AM

that would be nice if being chased by a cop and you decide to get away like in the movie the fast and the furious
arod87 07-28-2006 09:14 AM
thats pretty cool, if you find out let me know :)
yea let me now to!!!
DrD 07-28-2006 09:15 AM

Looks like they used an electrochromic panel (you can get that sort of thing for windows, too) - you apply current and it goes opaque. I don't know where you purchase that, but I know that 3M is one of the companies that sells the material (they had it in the demonstration center when I worked at 3M in Austin)
04ImprezaWRX 07-28-2006 10:14 AM

Yeah I seen one of those for a WRX but i cant remember the site.
Subaruski 07-28-2006 11:10 AM

ok as soon as you can buy these i want one
LastResort 07-28-2006 11:13 AM

I think that is just a regular license plate with a piece of smart glass over it.

http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/smart-window.htm

EDIT: Doh. People already pointed this out.
Damon 07-28-2006 12:38 PM
ok as soon as you can buy these i want one
why?
EJS 07-28-2006 01:22 PM

so they can try to outrun the police helicopters?
awdbeast 07-28-2006 01:26 PM

Ok, so it's cool but what do you use it for? Is there any practical application?
Is it just for James Bond / Spy Hunter fans and collectors? Impressing friends?
Cool conversation piece?
killaho 07-28-2006 01:47 PM

yeeeahah thats cool.

Of course theres application! its for outrunning police after you've done something stupid! Hiding your liscence plate before/after a chase makes you teh uncatchables!
why?
Do you have to ask. All types of reasons. If i told you i would have to kill you...
Subaruist 07-28-2006 02:20 PM

I guess you can run a red light in the middle of the night without the fear of getting spotted by those cameras. That's the only benefit I see.
WRX-ERROR 07-28-2006 02:42 PM
so they can try to outrun the police helicopters?
Not every police force has a helicopter.. I know in my town they don't..
2phless 07-28-2006 02:44 PM

I want all my existing car windows replaced with that. Arm the alarm, no one can see in, and the interior will stay cooler.
Call_me_Tom 07-28-2006 02:52 PM

I'd get it for the camera's at the intersections. I may not be doing anything wrong but I don't trust those camera's.
DrD 07-28-2006 04:10 PM

I imagine having one which is triggered by Ka radar would be nice - particularly around here - we have redlight cameras (no big deal) but they are retrofitting them to be photoradar stations as well... it's a non-moving violation, so it doesn't hurt your license, but if they stick to their guns, they promise $100 for 1mph over the limit (which is insane) up to a max of $400 for higher speeds...
dru_hill 07-28-2006 04:25 PM

It would be sweet until you left it on by accident and you got pulled over for having no liscense plate visible. :)
teh Phil 07-28-2006 04:26 PM

The only other application I could see is hiding the license plate at the track.....but you could just take it off....
WRB_in_my_veins 07-28-2006 04:38 PM

Yeah, yeah yeah, we're all discussing this oh-so-important mod but the truth is we all clicked on the Girl Of The Day link at the top of the page. WTF is up with the 7/28/06 girl? Me thinks that's a man...man.

It's actually the exact opposite. The current makes it go clear.

Stryder 07-29-2006 02:21 AM

Off topic but that lambo had a Bullrun sticker on the back. Last saturday I was driving west on I-80 in PA and saw a bunch of cars with bullrun stickers. Saw qutie a few lambo's, cruised next to a new Ford GT and a really nice 7-series BMW. Was funny to look over and see the BMW packed with four people and all three passengers passed out cold.

haha, i was thinking the same thing... how descrete is a a freaking LAMBO??? if you put that on a civic or camry that would be a lot more realistic as a way to run from the cops.
NewSTI 07-29-2006 04:30 AM

that's AWSOME man... i bet alot ppl in taiwan want those things.. dang... alot camera in taiwan lol..

Tim-H 07-30-2006 01:11 AM

That would be cool.

I wish it went black instead of opaque. That way you could turn the tint of your windows on and off, or maybe even adjust the tint level.

the ferrari superamerica's top window has this feature, same with the maybach. im sure a lot of higher end,.. rolls, bently's also have cars that have this feature, usually on the sunroof.
no more toll booths
NOW your talking my language. I would never pay a toll again. And I thought using temp dealer tags was the way to go, shucks...... :disco:
scoobdude 07-30-2006 09:51 AM

Here we paid for the roads, now they are tolling them... could be a good way to get what we paid for.
kevlarcupid 07-30-2006 02:49 PM

That was developed for one of the Bullrun teams. Hence the "bullrun" on the back of the car. It would be sweet to compete in one of those, and the speeds those guys are doing, they want to dodge as many speed cameras as possible.
Donzo 07-31-2006 08:53 AM

Scoobdude has a good point lol I'd love to have one for those street light cameras, not that I blow red lights or stop signs, but in NYC they turn green, yellow, red in 3 seconds so you end up blowing a yellow every single time. With one of these though, I'd be tempted to be a little more careless on the roads lol Road rage?? Of course! That tool on the cell phone can't get my plate when I run him off the road!! haha jk jk I don't do that
Donzo 01-26-2010 12:42 PM

Bump from the dead!

It's been almost 4 years... has anyone actually bought one for their Subaru?
Subaruski 01-26-2010 12:59 PM

They have this glass in office buildings now....

- remote click - glass goes opaque
- complete conversation
- remote click - glass goes clear
aggie113 01-26-2010 03:21 PM

This is the furthest I have ever gotten towards getting one. From an email over a year ago:
Hi sorry for the delayed reply...
if i am responding to you and you already got a response im sorry, i just have hundreds of e-mails for this glass...right now were in the research and development phase and still testing working out the small bugs...up to now all our prototypes needed a gap for 100% privacy and that gap was about an inch or so...but recently we figured out how to make it go completely black and put it right up against the plate...also when the glass was clear the power was on which meant constant power needed to stay clear...our new prototype as it sits is the opposite way and needs no power to stay clear and only goes black when it is powered on, thats no big deal though because the other way around drained such little power that it would only drain the battery if left on for a day or two without starting the car.
we hope to have this all done and ready to go soon!...also im located in canada.

Thanks for all your patience.

it doesn't matter if police get ur liscense plate if they don't catch you. they can't prove it was you driving. Just don't go straight home or you'll get caught for sure

It would be good for dodging those cameras. My town installed them for a short while. (we voted them away) Anyways, I received a ticket for running a red light by .14 of a second. Worst part was I would have been making a right turn on red anyways, which is legal.

It looks cool, but I think I would feel too deviant to actually buy one.

there are many morons who run this country, voted into power by other morons. it is a sad, terrible vicious cycle :(

for the god aweful amount of money this thing would cost i really think paying a toll 302308938023 times wouldn't add up..

I don't involve myself in politics very often; from what I understand it was a bill that was passed. WE can not repeal it because it's an indirect democracy. We can NOT vote for the people we voted to put in office who put up cameras.

But politics suck.

Moar info on the invisiplates.

Here it is, 500$ for a smart glass license plate!
