Videos from onboard my STi5 RA in the wet
Just a few videos from the SIDC trackday at Bedford Autodrome this weekend, onboard my STi5 Type RA, hope you find them fun.

oops, loosing it

a full lap :D

wagons can slide too
WRSport 12-01-2002 05:06 PM

Ahh yeah! Very cool.

I like the oops.!

No I take that back, I like your pit entry the best

Looks a bit "slippy" out there this weekend John.:)

Judging by the amount of turnsignals I see in the full lap it looks like your still driving at a pretty decent clip.
nate49509 12-01-2002 05:43 PM

What is the white light that is going on and off on your dash?
johnfelstead 12-01-2002 05:50 PM

top speed was about 140MPH before braking for the chicane on the main straight, so it was still fairly quick in places.

the light you see coming on is the intercooler water spray low level warning light, the other light is the centre diff position indicator. (set to fully to the rear  )
HoRo1 12-01-2002 06:16 PM

"wagons can slide too"

Surely you mean estate cars :)
02 T-WREX 12-01-2002 08:19 PM

Great videos. Very entertaining.

I especially enjoyed the pit entry
paultg 12-01-2002 08:41 PM

Wow. I always enjoy your videos John.

I just hope "over confidence" doesn't get the best of you someday.

Again, very fun videos. Thank you for sharing them.

johnfelstead 12-01-2002 09:38 PM

You should see me in a rally car Paul. Dont worry, overconfident is something i am not, i only play where it's safe to do so. ;)

pretty much all the corners of the track not using the racing line in this one. :D

AndyRoo 12-01-2002 10:10 PM

good stuff!

Quick question about your center diff. When you have it set fully to the rear, does that mean all power is sent to the back wheels, effectively making RWD? And you can adjust it 40/60 etc?

just wondering...
Petrie 12-02-2002 01:31 AM

You need a quicker rack

Oh, and was that 1st car you passed (blue one) in the full lap video a Noble?
dazz1 12-02-2002 11:49 AM

Very nice!

Maybe next time we'll be able to see a footage from outside the car?
:)
paultg 12-02-2002 12:30 PM
You should see me in a rally car Paul. Dont worry, overconfident is something i am not, i only play where it's safe to do so.
:D

Glad you didn't take the comment the wrong way. I'm just use to reading about the atmosphere here in the states at events like this, and your "style" wouldn't not fly here for sure. But it sure is fun to watch. Folks here just need to keep in mind how much experience you have, and that your not at a [insert US club name here] open track event. :D

Post some Rally car footage! I could watch in-car rally footage all day long. :)

Paul G.<--laughing at the picture in my head of you coming through a turn at Watkins Glenn sideways and all the club organizers having a heart attack, and corner workers scambling for the black flags!
johnfelstead 12-02-2002 01:23 PM

With the center diff fully open, torque does go to the front as well as the rear, in a 65/35 R/F split, however, once you get the rear tyres spinning, the center diff sends all the power to the rear wheels, as the center diff LSD is open. This is what catches out most people as the transition is instantaneous and takes a fair bit of skill to control that. As you wind the diff forward, the center diff couples the front to rear more and more until you get a 50/50 torque split, this is much faster in slippery conditions, but not as spectacular to watch.

The first car is a Noble, well spotted, fabulous car! There was a very well driven Ferrari 360 modena there too, that sounded awesome as I passed it. :D

It was funny during the day, some drivers did get black flagged for giving it plenty of sideways action, but I was left alone to do my own thing. I dont normally drive like that on track, I am usually very smooth, but Bedford was incredibly slippy and I thought, what the hell, lets have a day being a loon, as it is very safe there. I would love to take an RA on a track like Watkins Glenn, I have some original cine footage from the days when the Can Am McLarens raced there, plenty of power slides from the likes of Denny Hulme. :D
chkltcow 12-02-2002 01:27 PM

John, you are officially my new hero ;)
scoobdo 12-02-2002 01:32 PM

Hi John,
Just wondering if you've ever been on track with the Evo guys. There forum www.lancerregister.com is so funny they talk as if the Evo is THE nuts, which i know it is, some good english banter going on!!
I'd love to see how competitive you are with them on track!?!
Maybe you should attend one of there track days ;)
Oh yeah the videos look awesome by the way!
-Nik.
johnfelstead 12-02-2002 01:36 PM

i have done a few MLR trackdays in my westfield, lets just say they were not in the same league. :D There is a video of me at the last MLR day taking off on a big crest, landing sideways and power sliding down the pits straight at 45 degress, leaving big tyre marks on the track, i need to get a copy of that.

I havent done a day in my RA against those guys though, i would think one or two would be faster if it's dry, as they have massive power, mine is bog standard, but in the wet i would wipe the floor with them. ;)
skuttledude 12-02-2002 01:44 PM

heheh
Bloody good stuff John! Keep up the good work:)

Truly,

Davis
scoobdo 12-02-2002 02:41 PM

Bog standard? Why haven't you upgraded anything - just curious!?
hobbzz 12-02-2002 02:52 PM

John...what exhaust do you have? It sounds really nice!
thechickencow 12-02-2002 03:32 PM

Thanks for posting the videos, they're great to watch.

My only request is a simple one: Please remove your rearview mirror so we can see the track better...
johnfelstead 12-02-2002 05:40 PM

When i say bog standard, i mean bog standard engine. (280BHP)

The car has AP Racing 4 pots with 330mm disks, Leda coilovers, steering rack shimmed to remove bump steer, Anti Lift Kit, Braided hoses, M1153F front pads, M1155 rear pads, Cusco rear strut brace, 17" mim wheels with Bridgestone SO2 PP tyres, modified geometries.

The exhaust is standard STi5 cated downpipe and resonator centre section, but has a scoobymania prototype 3" backbox.

The RA comes with lots of trick stuff as standard so doesnt need playing with too much. :D
scoobdo 12-02-2002 08:54 PM

Nice selection of upgrade goodies!!
So i'd be correct in saying you've taken a different approach than most in upgrading, so you can out brake most and steer round corners (or should that be slide :D ) than most
Sensible way to do it!!
Hows the suspension feel compared to standard is it noticeably harder.
I'm thinking of putting Tarox 40 multi grooved discs on as i can't reach to AP's or the like, need them with psycho Texas drivers and there tank sized SUV's and pick-up trucks, give'em an inch and they'll take a car length so much for braking distances
johnfelstead 12-03-2002 06:43 AM

I have improved the areas that need it for consistency, both on track and road. This is my daily driver, so it's important that the car stays reliable, the easiest way to achieve that is to leave the engine standard, 280BHP is plenty enough with the RA gearing. It would be nice to have 350BHP, but it isnt worth the expense or risk to reliability that would introduce.

I was quite happy with the standard STi5 RA suspension, i changed it because it was overheating at the nurburgring and by 3/4 of a lap the shocks were not doing anything, it was quite hairy over the 3 big jumps near the end of the lap.

With the Leda i can run the car slightly softer on the road, yet much stiffer on track, plus it has no heat problems and stays consistent to how i set it up, it's good value for money. I could have spent a lot more and gone for Proflex or DMS 50mm, but i dont need the strength or fine adjustability those allow for my aplication.

Geometry setup made a big diference to the handling, it understeered like a pig when i bought it, it doesnt anymore. :D

The Cusco rear strut brace isnt that important on an STi as it has a much more rigid chassis anyway, i won that in a driving competition, so i may as well install it.

Brakes make a huge diference, not only do they stop me much quicker (and the RA was good anyway), they are 100% consistent with no brake fade on track. I also found a brake pad for the AP's that works well on the road and track, yet costs $50 a set. The MGF cup race series use the same caliper, they have subsidised parts, so i get the latest spec mintex pads for 1/3 of the proper cost. i tend to use a set of pads every 2 track days, so it's quite a good cost saving. Rear pads i run M1155, these work really well.

Tyres, i run 2 sets of wheels, both the same spec Mim 17", i use gold for the road and silver for the track, stops me getting confused. My road tyres are Bridgestone SO2PP, tonnes of tread on those as i dont push the car much on the road. At the moment i have some well worn SO2 PP's on my track wheels too, but thats just what i was given part worn, i will use pretty much any good quality part worn tyre, they dont last very long at all, couple of days kills them off.

Is this a common upgrade? I'm sure you've had a chance to climb under Jamie's car, and was wondering if you noticed if this could be done on our little ole 2.5RS? How much shimming is done?

Mike
scoobdo 12-05-2002 10:16 PM

John you have got to get that vid of you in your westfield that would be hilarious
johnfelstead 12-06-2002 01:14 PM

the steering rack shim mod can be done on any Impreza. You need toe guages to measure how much you need to drop the rack, its usually between 1-5mm, dont go more than 5mm.

I need to get that video, most of my westfield video stuff is gone, after i loaned it out to someone and they disapeared on me. I am seriously pissed off about that.

Blimey, i didnt think people would be still downloading these. I wiped them from my webserver as i needed the space to host my Monte Carlo pictures.

I could put them up on a slightly slower server if you like?

erk- John, I sent you a PM but it may have blown up before it was sent.

I have a personal web server sitting on an entire 1.5MBPS T1 doing basically nothing, and if you want a place to host/mirror some of your videos, I would be happy to put them there. The physical machine is in my office.

If you want to check out the speeds, go to www.eataworm.com and play any one of the videos there- it is quite fast. :)

Let me know,

James

Very fast server... Especially liked the spin video (nice catch!) and the ice racing... too bad we don't get such weather here.

FYI, I'm getting a 404 on the last post - sideways compilation - Is this happening to anyone else? All the others hooked up and came down fine.

mch 02-03-2003 07:20 PM

re: sideways compilation -
John,

Did you spend ANY time going straight ahead???

Seriously - what tires where you on and were you deliberately drifting or were the conditions that wet/slippery?

thanks,

mch.

p.s. I have the Ring video (driver side mirror) looped on a spare monitor. It is really quite hypnotic.
johnfelstead 02-03-2003 07:37 PM

i was just having a daft day out on track that day, so the only time i was straight was between the corners, the corners were for being a loon on. :D:lol:

I am actually on the gripiest wet weather tyres you can buy, Bridgestone SO2 Pole Positions. I was provoking that by running the centre diff open and giving it plenty of throtle, whilst doing a fair bit of weight transfer using the brakes on turnin, it basically handles like a RWD car once i get the wheels spinning with an open centre diff. I could have been a lot faster by winding some centre diff lock in, but it wouldnt have been as much fun. I was still faster than anything else out there even just looning about though. ;)

This is what my rear tyres looked like at the end of the day, you should be able to see how the tyres have big scratch marks at a 45 degree angle from where they were spinning and travelling sideways at the same time. Fun stuff.

That looks like you were having entirely too much fun! I'm still chuckling from the "pit entry" clip, and don't really want to know if it was intentional or just seemed like a good idea at the time...
johnfelstead 02-04-2003 10:51 AM

i did that every time i went into the pits, there is another time on the compilation video. Very funny stuff. :D
IXLR8 02-04-2003 12:17 PM

Yeah... just caught the other one, although not nearly as "impressive" as the left-of-the-corner-marker-sign excursion... like I said, waaay too much fun...

John,

can you get S-02s? Bridgestone does not sell them in the US anymore:(
BoyRacer 02-06-2003 01:53 PM

John,

Your vid's are AWSOME! I just got the one taken from the motorcycle with the Westie (sp?)... Great stuff!

You seem to have lots of nice cars and time (and skill for that matter) to track them. You must be either a professional driver or independantly wealthy! How do you find the time and money?

MGB
johnfelstead 02-06-2003 06:08 PM

unfortunately SO2's are no longer made, so what i have is part worn, once these are dead i'll try running some rally moulded slicks, see how i get on with those.

I wish you were right BoyRacer, sadly i am just Mr Average who works every day in IT to pay the bills. I have a long history in motorsport at a decent amatuer level though, so do most things myself or know the right people should i not be able to do a job on my own.

Timewise, i often wonder. On top of doing my own thing i mechanic on a top GroupA Escort Cosworth rally car and help run a 6 litre Lotus Esprit GT race car. I dont have many free weekends.
