What are the good wipers nowadays?

Just looking for something that will freaking work. It doesn't have to be so fancy it gives you a free BJ whenever you turn them on. Aren't there ones that spread some rain-x like stuff on when the wipe? Or should I use rain-x independently?
What says you?

FYI the Bosch Icon are the same style as the Valeo's only cheaper. TireRack sells the Valeo, and any auto parts store sell the Bosh Icons. :)

Auto Barn now has the Valeo wipers, they are about $20 each which is cheaper than the Tire Rack price and you don't have to pay the high shipping charge. I believe that Auto Zone now has the Bosch Icon blades which should be the equivalent of these since both are the beam type, although I haven't tried the Bosch ones yet.
I have used the Trico Innovisions, they are a cheaper knockoff of the more expensive beam blades, my experience with them was that they were initially ok but did not last very long. After a while they would chatter intermittently, and they left deposits on the windshield after extended use which I had to keep cleaning off.
I've had the Valeos on since last summer and they are still working well. I've also put a set on the GTO and the results are excellent so far.
After using beam blades I am never going back to conventional ones, there is a huge improvement.

As far as I am concerned, wipers are wipers. They are an expendable item and need to be replaced. It is just a matter of WHEN you need to replace them. Of course the more you spend, the better they are theoritcally, but IMO windshield wipers do one job only, get rain off the glass. One is as good as the next.
| ControlFreak | 05-26-2006 04:43 PM |
I'll put my vote in for the PIAA's. I have the super sporza one, for the driver side, has a super cool spoiler on it. And the super silicone for the passenger. Great wipers, comes with a silicone treatment for the windsheild. Highly recommended, got mine for about 40 bucks for the pair, not bad.
| samwY | 05-26-2006 11:52 PM |
I installed the same combination today, in carbon finish. I'm pretty sure the towel that come with the PIAAs are RainX equivalent cause they smell exactly the same.

I got the one from Pep Boys cheap-er version.
I still have it, use it as paper weight, just looked at it now, but there's no imprint on it to say if it's valeo or not. I recomend against it. It started squeeking 15 minutes after I installed it. 30 minutes later, the squeeking became so bad I had to stop and buy another blade.
I would buy Bosch Icon.
I looked at the blade closely to try to understand what's wrong with it and the rubber is glued to the metal crooked and not even in a straight line.
I believe bosch was supplying the beam blades in Europe as OEM fitment since the mid 90's. The point of these beam blades is probably high speed function, same as the spoiler fitted to the arm

Pep Boys sells the Trico Beam blades, as per my post above I tried them and they are not as good as the Valeo or Bosch beam blades. Mine lasted more than 15 minutes, but I agree they are an inferior product compared to the original.

i use stock wipers with rain-x windshield washer fluid+bug remover. whenever it starts raining i just spray it on and let the wipers apply the rain-x then i let the beading begin :)

After 4 years of great service, my stockers are finally starting to tear. They never chattered or squeaked...just smooth, silent performance. I was going to go with OEM again (those auto parts store wipers never seem to work very well) but saw the posts on the Valeo and Bosch beam wiper blades.
I think I'll get the Bosch Icons since there's been so many good reviews here and they'll be easier to get. I was wary of Bosch because I tried the micro edge before and they sucked.

Longest lasting I've had are w/the Piaa's, just about a year. I have Icons now and honestly, not any better than the less expensive Rain-x or Michelins I've had. For $20/wiper, should last more than a few months. Icons wipe fine on the upswipe but smears on the downswipe right in my line of sight!! It's probably just my set. :(
Gonna go Piaa's or maybe that silblade one mentioned above. Silicone blades seem to work better, IMO

In my experience, Bosch ICON's are not worth the money. At 80mph, the little spoiler holds back the blades just enough to make them annoying slow, even when set on High. And they have wind noise at higher speeds that the non-spoiler blades don't have. Honestly, why would a wiper need a spoiler? I've never had "wiper lift" at any speed.
Also, they seem to not want to clean a grapefruit sized spot in the middle of my eye line. I've cleaned them with better results, but after a few sweeps in the rain, the spot comes back. Maybe it's something, oil or something stuck to the windshield itself.
Either way, the Bosch MicroEdge Excel are the best in my experience. But I have to keep the ICONs a bit longer to justify paying all this money for them.

On my old car the driver's side wiper wouldn't even smear the rain once you got to around 65mph. I got PIAA one with the wing and no longer had the problem. I'll probably get PIAA again the next time I need wipers.

I've tried a ton of different wipers. My opinion is that for my climate, there really isn't a significant difference between them. Some of the brands tend to be more consistent than then others, but there is very little overall difference in the general performance.
That being said, I usually buy the Rain-X ones from Wal-Mart. They do not coat Rain-X on the windshield, they're just a good price/performance compromise. I've had one dud (squeaked and jumped from the moment I put it on), but I just changed it out sooner.

I also believe that proper maintenance of your wipers is important as well. I always wipe them down during the car wash. Winters I wipe them before I leave the garage.
