Window Tint

Hello, Can you tell me what window tinting % you recommend on a black 2006 WRX?
Also if you could post some of your pics with your tint % that would be most helpful.
Thanks!

I'd say go with whatever's legal where you live. But seriously, that's your call. Go with what you like & can get done. (my own preference: same % all around. gives uniformity to car.)
As far as type, depends on how much you're willing to spend and a couple other factors.
Dyed tint -- not bad, but because it's dyed, eventually it may start fading and turn purple after a few years. So long as you stay with a good brand of tint (Llumar, for example), that shouldn't be too much of a problem, but still, it's a possible eventuality. At the same time, tho, if you think you're gonna trade in after a few years, go for it. Cheapest option.
Otherwise, metalized tint is gooder: better heat rejection (which is why you should be wanting tint in the first place), won't fade, more scratch resistant, usually lifetime warranty from most places.
....but may interfere with your radio reception as the antenna is built into the rear windshield. (Also, darker % you go, harder it is to see out of windows at night; same for dyed.) If you're not big on radio, go with that! Looks really nice as well.
Hardcore option: ceramic-based tint (Huper Optik, tho there might be other brands out there). Tint itself is about 2 1/2 times thicker than "regular" tint. Even better heat rejection, not metallic so won't affect reception, but very expensive -- at least double the cheapest option, if not more (probly more). Also looks really nice: dark from some angles, not-so-much from others, even sometimes mirror-like.
May not be exactly what you asked, but since I just went through the tint search myself & others may look at this, I figured I'd pass along the basics.
For those not wanting to read all that, made the noteworthy stuff bold. Hopefully this was helpful to someone out there. :)
Oh, and I'd post a pic, but my car's white. Tint just looks dark anyway.

Legal here is 20% in the back and 35% in the front. I'll probably just go with that then.

I recently went 20% on the three backwindows, its perfect... Not to dark, from a distance it looks like 5%

20% is a pretty good level of tint.

A friend of mine has 20% rear and 50% front and it looks great. What have you guys paid for your tinting? I was figuring like $300.00 ish??
| xixco | 04-09-2006 01:14 PM |
not a good question, as it will vary depending on who's doing it, where you are located, and all that other stuff.
part of the reason i didn't give pricing in my initial post.
oh, and now that i think about it: make sure to find out how your tinter will do your back window! some people do 2 strips that slightly overlap, and you'll end up with a white-looking line up towards the top of your window. others can do one piece. didn't think/know about this when i got my GF's car done, and have sorta regreted it since.

This is going to sound like a really retarded question....but then again hence my label on the forums "Scoob Newb".
Do they make 25% tint? J/W because front legal in Az is 32% but its doesnt provide enough darkness.

| xixco | 04-23-2006 10:14 AM |
yeah man, 25% is made. I'm no tint expert but i'm pretty sure tint is made in most x0 and x5 percentages (like 40%, 35%, 30%, etc). What's strange is to find out that some makers make it in "odd" numbers like ...38%, but I guess somewhere there's a market.
Now, can you get someone to do 25% since it's lower light transmission than what you said is legal in AZ? probably, but there'll probly be a catch somewhere.
(meaning it'll either be done on the DL, or someone might make you sign a waiver saying the tinter's not responsible for whatever happens to you, haha -- or at least they will if they're smart)

Here are two pics of mine it's 15% on the back 5 and 50% on the front. I like the front it takes the glare off really well without looking tinted very much.

^^ I agree, definitely have to get the same % on the 5 back windows. In some states it is illegal to have tint on the front two, but there are ways to get around that. pm me.

Definately looks great on Black, but since my cars white, I don't think it will look as good. Any % on the backs is legal in Az, but your supposed to have 35 on the front. But I see dark tints left and right in Az so I'm not going to worry about it.
| ControlFreak | 04-23-2006 03:53 PM |
I have 35 on my car to its SGM though, and I agree I think the look is just about perfect.
I don't like the front and rear windows being a different tint % so its 35 all the way around.
Looks gorgeous and is legal +1

I just had my black '06 2.5i done yesterday. The tint law here in PA is foggy at best and seems up to how much your local municipality cares hassle you about any tint at all.
I went with 35% all around as well as a 4" strip across the winshield (why we don't get that from the factory is beyond me). It's Solar Gard's charcoal and cost me $220 including 6% PA Sales tax and includes a lifetime guarantee. I'll post pics ASAP.

The legal limit is 20 back 35 front here, too (I went with 35 all around) - you can get away with all 20, though, as the rules in the city proper are different from the rules in the county (20 all around)
for the cost question - as pointed out, it depends on what sort of film you get, who does it, where you live, etc. - I would make sure you get a decent film - the cheaper dye based tints will turn purple with time. (the only dye based tint I know which won't is 3M color stable - it even has a lifetime warranty) - best performance (from a heat rejection point of view) are the huper optik ceramic based ones (by quite a bit) but they are expensive.

The Huper Optik films are more reflective than the dye based or metallic based grey tints. (most manufacturers have the technical info on their websites - the H.O. film is good stuff - sadly, no one in town here works with it, so I went with 3M)

The 45% looks dark sort of speak because it's indoors. It looks very classy, and when I had them put on while in St. Louis, another man put it on his brand new Silver Cayman S (also 45%).
I used to have Madico Onyx 35% on my GTI. It was also very good, however this time I wanted something that would allow me to see out at night, especially when it rains. 35% already makes it hard to see during such conditions, and still, cops would try to peek into your window on stoplights at night.
Further, I wanted to go for the highest optics and minimum interference with the electronics (Sirius, Valentine 1, etc..), and thus settled for the 45% level, at a hefty cost though (~ $520).
I'll take a shot of the wagon during daytime for a better look. ( http://www.huperoptik.com/AutoProduct.asp?cat=NaviAuto.inc )

I'm glad V-kool was brought up, as they share the same parent company as Huper Optik, both being the highest-end window films available.
After trying out so many different brands of tints, I just decided to go with the best available this time around, and not worry about it ever again, especially since I'm interested in maximizing the V1's performance and other electronics.
I've been researching where I could have V-kool 70 installed on my front windshield in Dallas. It's literally clear and has excellent heat rejection properties.

I had my car installed with V-Kool 70 on the 4 windows and Huper Optik on the rear glass. Unfortunately, idiots attempting to break my glass and I end up installing htose cheap Johnson tint.
Although V-Kool is good, but the warranty sucks. I was from CA and an installer tint the window and he did an excellent job. Moved to Indiana and bubble started come out after like 2 years and I want to claim my warranty. I called v-kool up and unfortunately, there is no one in the state of Indiana that can install v-kool. Not even in Chicago becuase v-kool requires special skills to install it and its really hard to get someone to install it. In the end, I just bear the bubble until someone break the windows.

How dark is 35% and 20%? I am looking at getting my windows tinted and want to take a look at what my car might loook like at this level of tint. I would also like to know recommendations on a quality place to go. I'm pretty new to the area here, just moved from Dallas a couple of months ago so I don't know the area too well.
How dark is 35% and 20%? I am looking at getting my windows tinted and want to take a look at what my car might loook like at this level of tint. No idea where to send you, but most shops will have a bunch of cars done if you go visit them mid-day and you can see what different tint shades look like. 20% is pretty dark - that's about what you see on the back windows of SUVs and minivans - too dark for me at night (hard to see when you are backing up)

Go with what Sperry did. It looks really good.

anyone else got pics and specs of thier tint. i have a black 07 wrx tr and i wanna see some more before i get it done i was told mixed things about legal tint here but am thinking of just going with the 35 all the way around and i should be ok. i also wonder if im aloud to put the lightest tint on the whole windshield here too i think it would look strange with no tint
