WRC for PS2 is coming!!!!
Finally! I was nervous that it wouldnt come out here, now it looks like WRC will be here in March. Ive heard good things (and some bad) about this game but of course as a rally nut I must buy it as soon as it comes out. Also, if anyone out there has gt3 and hasnt yet tried the force feedback wheel than you havent lived yet. Utterly amazing...cant wait to try it out on the WRC game.

- Bam! Entertainment today announced that it has acquired the rights to publish WRC: World Rally Championship in North America this March. Long in development by Evolution Studios and published in Europe by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Bam! confirmed it's acquired the rights from Sony to bring the ultra-realistic looking rally game to the US. WRC offers more than 70 tracks, all of which appear in the 2002 FIA WRC rally stages, fantastic control, and super graphics.
"We feel that BAM! is the ideal publisher to bring WRC: World Rally Championship to the U.S. market," said Michael Denny, director of external development, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "BAM!'s knowledge of the North American market and its reputation of distributing solid licensed products made them the right choice to get this great game in front of an even greater audience of PlayStation 2 fans."
"With the critical acclaim that WRC: World Rally Championship has received since its launch in Europe, it would be a disservice not to bring it to the American market," said Bernard Stolar, President and Chief Operating Officer of BAM! Entertainment. "The team at Evolution Studios has put its heart and soul into creating one of the most outstanding rally racing games available on PlayStation 2."
"The World Rally Championship is already reaching millions of fans around the world via a wealth of media platforms," said David Richards, chairman of International Sportsworld Communicators. "The PlayStation 2 WRC game is a critical part of our strategy to bring the true drama and diversity of the real championship to a new audience. We are delighted BAM! shares our enthusiasm for bringing the unique WRC experience to gamers across North America."
"I think American race fans will come to love World Rally Championship racing, and SPEED Channel is the only place to see it," said David Hill, Chairman, Fox Sports Networks. "Besides being great TV, I'm sure the excitement and action of World Rally will no doubt make a thoroughly enjoyable game to play on PlayStation 2."
The game features several key features including:
Fully modeled 3D cockpits and cars
Satellite-based terrain
Photo realistic, massively populated environments and draw distance
Realistic weather conditions
Fully animated driver and co-driver
Deformation and damage to car and progressive mud, dirt, dust damage on vehicles
Full 10 degrees of freedom physics driving model

oh man.. my friend is going to be quite p'od...
he's a huge rally nut like me, and he decided to get the ps2 just so that he could play wrc... but after buying the system in november, he found out that wrc WASN"T coming out in north america... so he decided to have his cousin in england buy the game and ship it to him, and he would modify his ps2 so it could play it...
well.. long story short.. after a botched modification attempt, he took it to someone who knew what they were doing and had them do it.. but they had to charge him more to fix what he screwed up..
so he ended up paying like an extra 300 CDN overtop of the 500 CDN for the system....
all for wrc.... but at least he's had it for a month... so i guess that's something...

First GT3. Now WRC. Man, I'm gonna hafta earmark some cash for a PS2. No, I haven't bought one yet. I couldn't see spending money on a system that I only know of one game I'd like (GT3). I wasn't sure that I'd even care for GT3, since I have GT2 (I finally got bored of it).
| cyandell | 02-27-2002 02:49 PM |
i waited to buy ps2 until gt3 came out. I bought ps2, gt3 and the wheel all at once. Best investment ive ever made. It cost alot but playing gt3 with the force feedback wheel is better than any arcade game ever. If you set it up right with a nice seat and good tv its amazing. You wont leave your house for days. It was the only game i had for months and i didnt mind, gt3 is just really really good. WRC will be a blast, cant wait.

Very cool!
Today I saw the rally game for Xbox on the shelfs to be pre-ordered.
I also bought Rally Trophy for the PC. This is one awsome game. I really suck at the RWD cars but I can flick the FWD cars to victory :) .

Cyandell - About the force feedback wheel... Is it the Logitech? I've been thinking about purchasing it but have resisted. I was concerned it would be like the ones in the past. Totally worthless... Anyways, let me know if it is the Logitech for PS2 and I'll have to go get it...

For true gaming nuts www.desktopsims.com sells simulators for your PC (front of F1 car) for example so if you wanted to go crazy you could get them to build you something for WRC also.

I have the logitech wheel. I bought the original wheel right when it came out, but now i see that they have changed the wheel a little. Instead of buttons for shifting under the wheel there are less precise and slower paddle shifters. I have read that the original design is way better, and that you can still find those wheels. You just have to look. Getting the paddle shifter style logitech wheel wouldnt be bad but the one I have is waaaay better. I bought mine fo $90 but it came with free speakers and subwoofer....very very worth it. After playing with the wheel you will begin to ask how anyone could play with a stupid joypad controller! The force feedback is just soooo good. You feel every bump in the road, especially with the rally courses......just make sure you invest time in the setup of the chair, make it comfy and you will be in driving heaven!

My same friend that spent the 800 CDN has also just purhused the logitech wheel... he got a really good deal from future shop in canada... they had a limited time offer for 80 CDN... which was pretty much half price what they were normally charging...
problem is, he ordered off the website and has spent the entire week agonizing over it's arrival.. hopefully it'll shop up today... then I can go over and mooch off of him!
Oh.. and btw... I've played WRC on his system... it's pretty damn good... so realistic in the sense that you are driving the exact course that the real drivers drive.. one thing I found was a little odd, was you dont have a big sense of speed when you view the game from different camera angles... so before you know it you are doing 200km/hr into a turn that should be taken at 80km/hr... and you think that you aren't going that fast...
but overall.. I was impressed... make sure you have a memory card so you can advance through the different levels...

Since you have tried it can you tell me if the there is any co-driver audio? Also can you just race in the teams or do you have to work your way up? Thanks just curious about the gameplay.

tifosi77 - there is Co-Driver audio... pretty cool... different accents for the different teams and nationalities...
the first few rallys are open, but in order to unlock the rest, you must play and win all the previous rallys... it's not too hard... make sure you can save as you go... you pretty much have to start from the very beginning and then work your way to the top.. and once you've done that, you are able to unlock the 'professionnal' mode...
from what i've played of the game it's a little bit easy, because you can just go flying into corners, where any real driver would slow down and not chance the damage to car/person... but other than that, it's cool.. perhaps professional mode will make it more challanging....
body damage is AWESOME... we decided to do the Sweeden rally and just see how quickly we could trash the car... we were driving up snow banks and launching ourselves over hills and cliffs... it was just great... the car will lose lights, crack windshields and there is a 'damage indicator' inside and lets you know if your differential/engine/suspension/gearbox and a couple other things are in trouble..
all in all... this game is GREAT... especially during the races... when after watching the rally, you can then go and play the exact same stages!
OH... ALSO... when you select each rally there is an into to each event that has clips and actual footage from the real events and it describes what to expect... it's just like watching the real WRC.. very cool!
some ppl have frowned on it.. but I say it's worth... now.. whether or not it was worth the 880 CDN my friend has put into it.. i'm not sure.. :D :D :D
whoah.. sorry about the long reply..

Midwayman, you said:
Helpful hint: The logictech usb FF wheel is compatible with BOTH the ps2 and the pc. One wheel, two systems.
Do you mean ANY Logi FF USB wheel, or just the new PS2 one? Cause I have the original PC Wingman FF wheel now.
But, I do not have a PS2 yet. I just can't see buying a console when the PC is so much more. I play CMR2, Sports Car GT, TOCA2, and Porsche Unleashed. And the great thing about the PC games is that you can patch it, as well as add on new cars, skins, and tracks. SCGT has hundreds of additional cars made by regular folks, and even CMR2 has quite a few. Its really hard to see spending $300+ (well, near $500 for a PS2, GT3, Logi FF wheel, memory card, etc . . . . ) just to play one or two games.
But I have heard that GT3 might be out for the PC soon . . . .

I've heard the original Logitech FF wheel won't work with the PS2, but the later re-designed one will. No idea why, as they use the same drivers, but in a game review I stated that the PC Logitech wheel would work on the PS2, and got an e-mail from a reader that neither his nor his friend's would work with GT3.
I'd be very surprised if you'll ever see a GT game on the PC. Perhaps through emulation, but highly unlikely that Sony would bring their current cash-cow over to another platform.

Yah, its the new logitech USB wheels that are supposed to work cross platform. I dont think it matters if you buy the pc wheel or the ps2 wheel. (though the pc wheel is cheaper!)
If you want a really cool wheel check out www.actlab.com
The force rs has changable engines that allow you to upgrade it to work with new systems as they come out. Also available there : 6 speed h-style shifter (no more paddles!) and a nice pedal set with a clutch pedal.

The newest wheel out is the Driving Force wheel by Logitech. It even has a lap adaptor incase you don't have a proper table. It works just fine. I personally like the paddle shifters. Makes me feel like I'm driving the real thing!

srosqvist - I haven't played mcrae.. it's not too similar to gt3... from what I understand of the set up it is EXACTLY the same as the world rally championship. all the stages to each rally that is actually done in real life...
I know they have all the rallies (monte carlo, sweeden, corsica and so on....), but they may shorten the stages or extend some... I haven't had the opportunity to really play a lot of it. But stages range from 3-7 mins of play, at least for the ones that I did..
that's why it has been certified by FIA and WRC, because of its accuaracy to the actual events.. unlike mcrae or gt3 where they just make stages that are 'similar' to the rallies...
hope that helped..

Sorry :)
To make a super long story short, when the cars shift inbetween gears, there are loud explosions and fire balls(sometimes) that come out of the tailpipe.
I was totally bummed when GT3 left this feature out. That is one of the best features of the modern day WRC car, how can they NOT have it in a WRC game!!!!!!????!!! :)

Ohh.. now I see what you mean about anti-lag..
you'd better believe it... sounds just like the real thing..!!
they've tried to make this thing as realistic as possible... one of the cool things about the UK version, is that you can play it in 8 different languages... and for whichever language you choose, the co-driver will speak that language when giving the stage notes... very cool... not sure if the north american release will have this or not...

GT3 has nothing on this game... it's pure rally...
the graphics aren't the greatest... but they are still pretty damn good... you feel like you are getting blinded by the sun when you are looking right at it, low on the horizon, and shadows are very well done...
one thing is that they left all the water out of the safari rally... lots of dry creek beds, but no actual water that you get to blast through... no need for snorkels in this version....

I was at Best Buy today to finally pick up GTA3 and the guy there didn't have a release date as well as GTA3. I ended up at Circuit City. They had my copy of GTA3 but he didn't know the release date for WRC either. THe guy at Best Buy said that NFS for the PS2 will be out the end of this month though.
It looks like we will also get a Race Of Champions PS2 game too.

I'd recommend trying out the game before you buy it.
I've played it and there was lots of cool stuff but a few things that didn't seem right. I found it a bit too easy overall, and yet the pace notes can be frustratingly late. You might be in top gear and at maximum revs and come over a crest to find a 90 degree right, just as it's called. Result = big accident.
It's great how you can see a long way into the distance and the replays are pretty cool.

I definatly agree with the late calls and overall a little too easy comments... it gets really frustrating when you do 200km/hr into a hairpin the very second you get the pace note..

Does this happen everytime in the same place or is it random ?

genearlly only when you are really moving... then the calls can get a bit behind, it's not too noticable below 100-150km/hr , but as the speed increases, the co-drivers are speaking a little later and later...
my favorite was launching myself off of a cliff where a hairpin was going off to the left and i pretty much went straight off and landed on the road below (proabbly 500' below me as the road switchbacked down the mountain...)
ahh.. good times... :D :D

No point in importing... the US version will be here soon. I heard the 14th before, but now I've heard the 28th... maybe got pushed back a few weeks, or waiting for people with an Xbox to get tired of Rallisport? ;)

I picked up GTA3 a couple weeks ago. If WRC comes out soon, my crime career will more than likely get put on hold for quite a while. :D

I just happen to have a Japanese PS2 because of all the cool Japanese games that don't get released here.
