WRC Rally Corsica

Tour de Course is about to start. Shakedown is finished already, and the times are as follows:
1 Duval (Ford) 4m18.6s
2 Gronholm (Peugeot) 4m18.7s
3 Loeb (Citroen) 4m20.7s
4 Sainz (Citroen) 4m22.8s
= Martin (Ford) 4m22.8s
6 Robert (Peugeot) 4m24.2s
7 Solberg (Subaru) 4m25.0s
8 Loix (Peugeot) 4m25.7s *
9 Gardemeister (Skoda) 4m26.0s *
10 Hirvonen (Subaru) 4m29.2s
11 Vouilloz (Peugeot) 4m29.7s **
12 Sarrazin (Subaru) 4m30.1s **
13 Schwarz (Skoda) 4m30.3s *
14 Bengue (Peugeot) 4m35.8s **
15 Carlsson (Peugeot) 4m48.7s **
16 Warmbold (Ford) 4m54.2s **
* not eligible for manufacturer points
** privateer entry
I wonder if Petter was taking it easy to prevent a repeat of last year's Corsica shakedown...? :p
The weather is supposed to be variable, with rain having fallen and more in the forecast. We'll see how much that helps the Pirelli-shod Subarus.

Pray for Citroen racing to have to suddenly pull out of WRX competition, leaving Loeb with no points for the last three events...
Well, that isn't going to happen, so we will have to give Loeb his due and hope for fewer failures on Petters car next season.

Very true.

even if petter doesn't win the championship i would like to see him sweep the rest of the events which should not be that hard if lobe is just trying to keep the car on the road and finish...

He just need to baby this race. He can go all out in the next 2 after he wins the championship on Sunday.

Sunday at 6PM pacific time for the preshow and 6:30 for the actual race. Same as usual.

Why couldnt Loeb just be driving a peugeot, those cars have countless mechanical errors and he wouldnt be a threat anymore.

I think, this is where we lose it.
Too reliable of a car for Frelequin's boys, and too many water splash problems for Lapworth's posse.
Oh well, it's been a good year.
Report is the Pirelli has a new compound they are going to use for this one. Sarrazin will be tough to be too guys. That's a guy to watch.

hey...i'm a big solberg fan, but loeb has just had a better year...hes mercilessly fast, clean, hell, when was the last time he even put a ding in the car? He deserves the championship, sad as i am to see solberg lose it...

They totally remodeled the Evo WRC 2004 and apparently it sucks. Most of the privateer class cars ran faster than it did. The car had barely any testing done on it and it lacked some high tech features that the other major manufacture cars have, ie paddle shift gear box. The team finally announced that they were going to do some more testing before they'll ever show up to race in a WRC event again. Basically, Mitsubushi was hoping to use WRC 2004 season as a big testing run. But, I would say thats an awfully expensive way to test new vechiles, so i guess they figured out that and decided to test on private grounds else where.

All I can say is... ouch...
maybe they tried to improve their build quality and the parts ended up not snapping together or falling apart faster than expected? :D
Anyway, that sounds pretty sad. Wouldn't they lose sponsors that way?

Most of the remodeling was aerodynamics. The rear spoiler was the most hidious thing i've ever seen and the wheel wells were pretty wierd too. Pics are on this site:

As if things aren't bad enough for Mitsu, their sales are down more than 40% in the US this year.
Loeb vs. Solberg: The official rallydefrance.com site has a post-shakedown press conference with them. Near the end, Loeb and Solberg start asking each other mock "interview" questions, bantering back and forth, pretty funny:
Question (SL to PS) : Does it help you to finish the shakedown with the car in one piece ?
PS : The car is in one piece, which is good. I was a bit stressed in the recce and the shakedown. My heart was pounding but everything is OK. It will be a very interesting rally
Question : (SL to PS) Do you think it is going to rain here ? Will that help you ?
PS : Of course, but since Catalunya you have found something special to help you in the wet and we are struggling a bit. But Corsica is a very different tarmac, abrasive and muddy, so it is very different compared with Catalunya. For me it has to rain if I have a chance and you have to do a mistake
Question : (PS to SL) : Are you just going for 5 points ?
SL : Yes, for five points . And you ?
PS : That is b***** ! I know you will go for a win from the start. That is your aim.
SL : My team wants me in the first four. You don't have to listen to Guy Frequelin every time.
Question (PS to SL) : Why don't you go over to Pirelli like Peugeot ? That might help.

Solberg has said he prefers Tarmac over Gravel events. The Pirelli tires and the impreza just seem to be off on the dry pavement. It is interesting that this has been the case for so many seasons.
Would seem they would set a priority to make the car competitive on tarmac
The car has proven very capable on gravel though.
I often wonder what this season would have been like had Richard Burns been able to drive

Cedric Robert and Stephan Sarrazin are French National Championship aces. Robert is really good, as he proved on the WRC level with a BOZIAN entry 206 in years past in Corsica, Monte and San Remo. Peugeot allows him to run a facotry WRC car on asphalt courses because of his skill and locality to the local fans.
He's good.
Sarrazin has a really strong Prodrive built WRC03 Impreza. He was very quick in person in Germany, despite brake problems amongst a few other things.
I would like to see him in a WRC04 factory car this next year.
This rally aint looking so good. I wonder what Ford cooked up while Subaru was out winning the last 3 rallies?

Except for Solberg and Sarrazin, is there a pattern?

Congrats to Sebastien Loeb! He truly deserves the title this year! It's also nice to see the good sportsmanship between him and Petter. No trash talking or attitudes, just duking it out on the stages. It made this year as interesting as last year!
The next 3 rallies should be pretty wild now that the championship is sealed! It's gonna be fun to watch!

Leob... I hate that guy! Actually, he's such a nice guy. I was kidding when I say "I hate that guy!" I just wanted Petter to win. It sucks when a nice guy wins... it makes it difficult to not like the guy and cheer for the home team. At least Petter is holding off 2nd place and not dropping dramatically in the standings. So Petter... next year, don't retire from any more rallies and finish 1st!!! ;)

Well, I love this picture. It shows the great class of Petter and the rest of the WRC drivers! Wish we could see that king of sportsmanship more often in motorsports.

Loeb was just consistantly fast all year. There was never any real race for the championship.
| montana_slim | 10-17-2004 09:04 PM |
Pirelli/Subaru have never been as competitive on tarmac as on gravel. Michelin just seems to have the better tarmac setup for whatever reason. But Petter being down by as much as he was is a bit troublesome. I wonder if the new rubber compound didn't pan out as well as everyone thought. I think Petter had a good season, but he had some reliability issues and "offs" that Loeb was able to avert. Better luck next next year for Subaru, Petter and Mikko.

I noticed that Corona was etched out this weekend on the SWRT cars. Bastard-child Corsica must have some funny laws.

I wish Pirelli could come up with a competitive tire for tarmac. I was surprised to see Peugot switching to Pirellis. Seems like they are more dominant on tarmac than gravel. Hopefully this will lead to better tarmac tires.
Any news on Richard Burns?

Ask Felstead, Burnsie won't be back anytime soon. He is in a world of hurt still.
It's kinda funny that David Richards (Head of the WRC and of Prodrive) is pushing to more gravel events (Mexico, Sardinia, Japan, Turkey) as we all know Pirelli works best on loose surfaces..
Sarrazin was on Michelins on his 2003WRC Impreza. Pretty good finish. Imagine what Petter could have done with them.
