WRC Round 2: Uddeholm Swedish Rally Starts Feb 6th!
Monte Carlo is in the record books! What's gonna happen in Sweden? Talk about it here!
nKoan 01-28-2004 02:13 PM

Gronholm has won Sweden the past two years, and the 307 doesn't seem to be having any teething problems, so I think he stands a good chance at first place.

What seems really interesting, though, is that we will have a few people with good experience in snow driving in works or near works cars. Janne Touhino in a 03 Focus and Hennig Solberg (Petter's older brother) in a Bozian 206.

Top three is difficult for me to predict, but I'm going to guess
Gronholm
Martin
Loeb

With P. Solberg, Tuohino, Sainz, Hennig Solberg, Loix, Sohlberg and Duval rounding out the top 10 in relatively that order.
extraducksauce 01-29-2004 12:01 AM

Gronholm
Solberg
Martin

I hope Petter can get into form early on this season. . . . but hey, what a great start on the season. i wonder if any team can hold off the french on the manufactures title?
WRXedUSA 01-29-2004 07:35 PM

w00t w00t!

The countdown continues!!!!!!
YoungWilliams 01-29-2004 09:11 PM

I need to talk my buddy into saving this on his ReplayTV for me. Why my cable company no Speed?
iemonslice 01-30-2004 10:26 AM

I have full confidence in Gronholm to take 1st. He's just too good! 2nd and 3rd are a tossup. Definitely 2 of Martin, Solberg, or Loeb. If I was forced to toss one, it'd be Solberg.
ShockWave 01-30-2004 11:59 AM

Loeb hasn't pulled down a gravel win yet, so I'm not ready to put him on the podium here. And hasn't this rally only gone to Scandinavians for its entire existance? I have to go with an all Scandinavian podium.

1. Gronholm
2. Martin (practically a Scandinavian)
3. Hirvonen

I know Hirvonen for third is a long shot, but I just have a hunch.
bemani 01-30-2004 02:27 PM

No confindence on Solberg. Hirvonen crashing out AGAIN. Subaru still last place on maufacturers. :(

I say Martin 1st place. Possibly with Duval handing it to him
Gronholm 3rd place.
Opie 01-30-2004 03:11 PM

My picks:
1. Gronholm
2. Martin
3. Sainz
4. Solberg

Loeb has placed 2nd on a few non-tarmac events last season. I think he has the experience to make a great drive in Sweden.

I don't think Duval has enough experience on non-tarmac rallies to make podium.

It's a shame Makinen and Rovanpera aren't around because they'd both make top spots.
WRXedUSA 01-31-2004 06:22 PM

The weather forcast is right at 0* Farenheight. It apparently hovers around 10* during the day.

Karlstad got dumped on a few days ago. Should make for some good snow action. I hope the Rossby waves that are over the central US now don't make it all the way over to Europe by then.

<WRX'd runs to get more socks>
datageek 01-31-2004 10:05 PM

*shiver* Wales in November was cold enough for me, thanks.

So WRXed, are you going to the rally? If so, can you give us a report on your adventures? :D

There are so many great drivers to chose from on this rally! My only predictions are that Grunholm is going to win, and that we'll see a couple of privateers in the points.
WRXedUSA 01-31-2004 10:25 PM

Yes. I'm going to the rally.

I'm leaving on SAS on Wednesday. I will arrive late to shakedown. I have all my winter gear, new boots and everything. I will be staying in a older womans house 14km north of Hagfors. I arrive at 10am on Thursday. I'm renting a Ford Ka. I have all sorts of disposable cameras, I will take a bunch of pictures and get them burned to a CD and post here in motorsports.

I'm really excited about meeting the scoobynet.co.uk people and the local swedes.

If I find a internet cafe in Hagfors I'll post from there.

Cheers!

I'm excited!
Mikko 02-02-2004 05:31 AM

The weather reports didn't look that great about the weather in Uddeholm, something about hot, far above freezing weather, which would just suck.

Assuming it is snowy, I am most certainly going! I live about 4, 4 hours away. Probably for leg 2 on saturday, for a couple of stages only, then quickly back home again on the same day. Bringing my digicam and going to take as much interesting photos as possible. And I will post the best ones here. :)

Regarding how people will finish.. Duval is not going to drive in Rally Sweden. Janne Touhino from Finland is driving in the second Ford Focus.

Grnholms 307 is larger and longer than he is used to, it is not as nimble as the 206 (which is great for the narrow snowy stages). It is also still new, and I believe that something will go wrong with it in some way.

I think it will be:

1. M. Mrtin (Ford)
2. S. Loeb (Citron)
3. C. Sainz (Citron)
4. P. Solberg (Subaru)
5. M. Grnholm (Peugeot)
6. D. Carlsson (Peugeot-Bozian)
7. M. Hirvonen (Subaru)
8. F. Loix (Peugeot)

Is Duval not going to drive at all, or is he just not one of the Ford points-nominated drivers? I had heard that he was going to drive to get the experience, but Ford wanted to "take the pressure off" by not having him running for manufacturer's points.
Mikko 02-02-2004 12:22 PM

I think not drive at all. I couldn't find him on the entry list on www.swedishrally.com

Lucky lucky man. :)

Be sure to find the group of Solberg supporters. I hear they know how to have a good time.

http://www.swedishrally.com/dokument/Official%20Entry%20List%202004.pdf

Check out the entry list, he is on it as number 11. Malcolm Wilson's plan was to take pressure off Duval by nominating Janne Tuhino for manufacturer points but Duval was to keep driving for driver points.
WRXedUSA 02-02-2004 09:58 PM

Mikko,

You have anything for me?
Dr. WOT 02-04-2004 10:13 AM

I agree, you can't bet against the Scandinavians in Rally Sweden. My pick is for Marcus Gronholm.
Mikko 02-04-2004 10:59 AM

Have anything for you? What do you mean? :)

It looks as if I'm not going. Sadly, it is warm as hell here now (in Sweden) and everything is melting away. And the weather reports say it will keep being that warm until sunday, when it will turn below freezing again. Crappy..
Arioch 02-04-2004 01:07 PM

I'd love to see it as

1)Solberg
2)Martin
3)Gronholm

But I think it'll be more likely

1)Gronholm
2)Martin
3)Solberg
Dr. WOT 02-04-2004 01:17 PM

Mikko, what a bummer, I hate when you can see the road surface in this event.
Mikko 02-05-2004 04:10 AM

Update on the weather forecast (it is looking better now!):

Thursday: 3C / 37,4F "Cloudy"
Friday: 3C / 37,4F "Increasingly cloudy"
Saturday: -5C / 23F "Cloudy and snowfall"
Sunday: -4C / 25F "Cloudy and snowfall"

If it turns out that way, I'll probably go on Sunday. With my rally crazed dad and digital camera.

WRXedUSA - would you like to get a photo of yourself being pushed out on the stage just as a Impreza is about to strike you? Just kidding. I'll only be there for a brief while, a stage or two. Going into the stage looking for some good place to take photos, then I'll be heading home again. Hmm... maybe next year I'll be able to meet some of the rally junkies from here. I'm also going to Rally Finland this summer.
Big Mini 02-05-2004 09:31 AM

Petter - Road Accident!
BUT, OK and fastest in shakedown!

You always need faith...Go Petter....
I just want to see some other manufacturers competeing besides the french teams...
Mikko 02-05-2004 11:52 AM

How about Chevrolet and Pontiac? :alien:
WRXPRESS 02-05-2004 12:02 PM

I wanted to see Kia
Mikko 02-05-2004 12:05 PM

The Kia "K.I.A." rally homologation special.

I would love to see them put out a car being just as good as the Evo 8 and have all the brand-whores throw a fit, refusing to accept it.
Pua-STi 02-05-2004 12:13 PM
You always need faith...Go Petter....
I could not agree with you more. whats up :furious: nobody has any faith in Petter  GO PETTER GO !!!!!
Mikko 02-05-2004 12:19 PM

Faith in Petter? :) The guy had an accident today where some Belgians hit his Impreza with their car when he was on his way to the shakedown stage. But like a certain French tarmac rally.. Deja Vu :D

Swedish Shakedown results:

1. Petter Solberg 1:56,4
2. Marcus Grnholm 1:56,6
3. Daniel Carlsson 1:57,7
3. Carlos Sainz 1:57,7
5. Henning Solberg 1:57,8
6. Mikko Hirvonen 1:58,1
7. Markko Mrtin 1:59,3
8. Sebastien Loeb 1:59,4
9. Francois Duval 1:59,9
10. Freddy Loix 2:00,2
rupertberr 02-05-2004 12:29 PM

Good news, Solberg crashes...
...then sets FTD. :D

Gronholm second fastest on shakedown.

Let me see...what happened the last time Solberg wrecked during a WRC shakedown? :D

and this was just getting there! Everyone else is toast.
nKoan 02-05-2004 01:08 PM

So, when Solberg crashes he seems to do well. I wonder if Lapworth paid some Belgians to ..... :D
Mikko 02-05-2004 01:16 PM

Truthfully, it truly could help Solberg psychologically.
WRXPRESS 02-05-2004 02:07 PM

They could pay me to be Petter's professional pre race accident guy....Kinda like that annoying guy in Happy Gilmore....
Mikko 02-05-2004 02:27 PM

Petter might make hate pages about you then. (imagine a juvenile page full of flames of someone, made by Solberg, with bad Html skills).
Mikko 02-06-2004 06:59 AM

SPOILER ALERT - SPOILER ALERT

Current standings after SS3 (highlight text to see it clearly):

1. M MRTIN 44:24.5
2. S LOEB +14.2
3. C SAINZ +17.5
4. P SOLBERG +22.6
5. J TUOHINO +33.3
6. M HIRVONEN +41.5
7. M GRNHOLM +53.8
8. D CARLSSON +59.6

Not bad, my bet 1-4 is spot on so far. Grnholm was spanking at first, but on stage 3 he suffered power steering failiure.
rupertberr 02-06-2004 09:51 AM

Solberg up to third after SS4. Only 1.7 behind Loeb.:)
jesse370 02-06-2004 02:03 PM

GO PETTER!!!!!
brainrally 02-06-2004 04:17 PM

Mikko Hirvonen is in 7th at the end of the day. Not bad for the rookie. :)

Petter in 3rd, which is pretty good so far. I wouldn't be disappointed if he finished in 3rd, but I hope he can find that extra something to move up the podium.

It would be cool to see the rookie bringing in points.

Wrc.com rally radio is going away
They just announced this morning that tomorrow will be the last broadcast. Ugh. I dont know how I'm going to live without it. It seems that this may be related to the TV affiliates objecting to a live radio broadcast prior to their delayed airings. Meh.

If you object to this and would like to try to help make a difference, please email [emailprotected]. We may be able to reverse this...let's try. Many around the world are emailing as we speak. There are some threads about it on wrc.com forums.:furious:

I was #150. And someone else had signed it before I finished reviewing my comments.

Mikko would have finished a lot higher if he hadn't gotten stuck in a snowbank and lost six minutes. Here's hoping that he'll manage to put all the pieces together and put down a solid run once we move off of the specialist rallies.

They just announced on World Rally Radio over 1000 signatures on the petition! Hope it helps.:(

Impressive performance for Loeb. He'll be a tough nut to crack this year.
Great drive for Marcus and a well done to Petter.
Skyline 02-08-2004 12:07 PM

Signed the petition as well. I cannot believe they'd take World Rally Radio away. :(

As for Loeb, that man is unstoppable. Petter's got a huge job in front of him this year.
TV3WRX 02-08-2004 01:45 PM

email them as well
Email [emailprotected], even if you have signed the petition. They are getting bombarded, we need to keep hitting them hard over the next few days. If nothing else we will make a strong point.

The Rally: Loeb has to be commended. The kid is superb, and in just 2 yrs has gone from part-time Tarmac specialist to all-terrain dominanting skill. He's visibly smoother in the car than the others even when pushing hard. Impressive. Markko was obviously very impressive as well until the mistake. I have a feeling those two are going to be on top for quite a few years to come. Not to write off Petter, though. He'll have his moments of genious, too.

The Cinderella award has to go to Janne Tuohino, finishing 4th, only 21 secs out of third. WOW. Give that guy a medal. Scored big points for Ford too.

OK guys keep it up on the radio thing.
WRXedUSA 02-09-2004 01:27 AM

You are kidding about radio right? NO wonder they looked at me when I walked up to the WRC truck and asked them to pass a message to you guys.

That sucks.

When I get back stateside, i will have some great pictures and stories for yall

I met:
Nicky grist

Carlos Sainz
Mrs. Loeb
Francois Duval
markko Martin
Malcolm Wilson
etc.

I cant remember, just wait till Wednesday...

Generally, all rally peeps were small stature. The only "freak" was Marcus and Markko. Markko is my hieght.

Gilli Gali and Daniel Elena were tiny too.

BTW, Nicky GRILLED me. I introducted myself and he says, "you arent one of those people that goes to my website and bitches are you?" I quickly calmed him down and said that I appreciate anything we get. He then went on and explained to me how the US gets better coverage that the rest of the world. Eurovision only gets 1hr. Heck, the rally didnt even make the evening news here in Sweden.

Overall, I liked Nicky, he was the best of all of them. Very interested in what I had to say.

I still can't believe Loeb won!

Hard to believe that just a year or so ago he was still a "tarmac" specialist". Geesh, that guy can learn fast.
Kinda bummed that the Scandinavian record has now been beaten, (especially by a frenchy:)) but its cool that Loeb did it.
( i was hoping Sainz would be the first non-Scand. winner)
Of course I was pulling for Solberg and Gronholm....who both made a ton of mistakes.

Mexico should be interesting!

Davis
Dr. WOT 02-09-2004 10:12 AM

Good race, I'm glad some snow came down and made it look as it should -- I think this is my favorite event in terms of the scenery.

Great result for Loeb, but frankly I'm not too impressed with his drive. IMHO Martin had the drive of the race... he was so confident, so controlled, so fast. I admidt that perhaps a little less speed would have kept him out of trouble but that's rally... a few inches makes all the difference in the world.

I'm shocked at Gronholm's driving mistakes. For sure he was pushing hard, but for him to make 2 mistakes on a surface that suits his driving is a little disappointing... and he knew it too.

Great job by Petter to make it all the way back up to third, for sure he benefitted from everyone else's attrition, but we'll take those 7 points thank you very much! Very important to get points since Loeb is off to a perfect start this year.

Anyway we're off to Mexico, I'll get my pick in early... watch out for Carlos!!
