Yellow Tinted Headlights part 1

OCD-Speed 10-07-2004 05:41 PM

Yellow Tinted Headlights
I went to VIR (Virginia International Raceway) this past weekend to watch the Grand-Am cup series and was getting an idea of trying this on my STi. I was wondering if anyone knows what they use on the GT cars, I know there is a spray and film that you can use to do this. Also how hard is it to get the spray off if you want to change it?
N'CTRL 10-07-2004 06:11 PM

Try either www.lamin-x.com or www.rockblocker.com for that film. I have it on my fogs lights and it works great. Thinking about doing it to the high beams also, but I'll prolly just eventually get yellow bulbs. Here are some pics.

I Just did yellow lamin-x on my sti headlights. I'll get some pics up tomorrow for ya. It looks awesome in my mind.
ScreaminFast 10-07-2004 06:55 PM

i was thinking about doing the yellow on my highbeam of my morettes too. I'm not sure how it would look. We should photoshop it to see how it looks :)
OCD-Speed 10-07-2004 09:23 PM

N'CTRL thanks for the links, nice fog lights!

drivrswntd I'd love to see em when you get a chance.
OCD-Speed 10-09-2004 01:24 AM

If anyone else has pics of yellow tint on a 04-05 impreza please post em.
drivrswntd 10-09-2004 02:03 AM

This is a pic in the garage, but i'll get some during the day for you as well.

N'CTRL....your car is bad ass....that is the look i'm going for....someone already beat me to it....all i needed was the lights and yellow fogs;)....

your car looks great:cool:
MikalsWRX 10-09-2004 09:38 AM

Does anyone know if the 02 foglight diameter is the same as 04. I saw they had a kit for the 04. Thanks Mikal
darioc 10-09-2004 10:12 AM

drivrswntd: how did you do that to your headlights? lamin-x?
drivrswntd 10-09-2004 11:20 AM

its just yellow lamin-x film.
OneOBS 10-09-2004 11:49 AM

Are we in France? Is this France?
PabloEscobar'd 10-09-2004 02:19 PM

Ughhkhhghoo!!! (french laugh)

I was thinking about doing something like this, but i dont know if its "DOT" approved or whatever commie garabge the Department of Transportation dictates.. :D
darioc 10-09-2004 02:21 PM

$50??? that is a crapload of money!
Hyper 10-09-2004 03:05 PM

so what's the advantage?
TexRex8 10-09-2004 03:14 PM
so what's the advantage?
To look like a true GT Tour racer...I don't know. I wonder how the cops will like it.
drivrswntd 10-09-2004 03:50 PM

yellow is better for wet weather driving and rain and snow.
Hyper 10-09-2004 05:32 PM

yellow > HID ?
AK_2002_WRX 10-09-2004 05:44 PM

any pictures of the HIDs on with the yellow film?
pistoffjstr 10-09-2004 10:48 PM

could just get yellow bulbs i did that with my truck found them on ebay
abaxter34 10-10-2004 01:27 AM
yellow > HID ?
hids have so much blue color in them that they create some pretty intense glare in rainy, snowy and foggy situations. yellow is definately better in those conditions.
AK_2002_WRX 10-10-2004 01:49 AM

haha....a little OT...but wheres your bypass valve driverswanted?
sirbryanclark 10-10-2004 03:04 AM

does the film get messed up from rocks or bugs hitting it from freeway driving and such?
ChrisRC 10-10-2004 03:48 AM

I am very confused about this whole light situation; I basically want the best legal light output. I currently have clear Osram Silverstars in my stock WRX headlights. I thought yellow bulbs reduced total light output, so I purchased these clear ones. I am planning to eventually upgrade to STi HIDs, but now the above information has really put me in a state of uncertainty. Living in Seattle and being an avid snowboarder puts me in the rain and snow quite a bit. While I heard HIDs create some glare in the rain, I figured they would still be an improvement over my stock headlights. So what does everyone recommend I get? Yellow covers? HIDs? HIDs with yellow covers? Thanks in advance for any advice. :)

In short, any lens or bulb coloring is a passive filter, reducing the total output of light passing through. Yellow coloring on the bulb or lens reduces more of the wavelength around the blue color, making it appear more yellow. In normal weather, adding a passive filter obviously means reducing the "brightness" without much added benefit. In inclement weather however, the presence of wavelengths around the blue color scatters more, thus reducing visibility.

Further detail can be found in:
http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/lights/light_color/light_color.html

I'd keep the clear bulb on the low beams and put yellow covers on the fogs. Afaik, yellow coloring on low beams is not legal in most states, including WA. I know in inclement weather, using foglights only is sometimes better because even the low beams can cause fog to light up ahead. So perhaps you'd want to get an aftermarket fogs or modify your oem fogs to light up on the lowest headlight setting (i.e. not the full low beam or high beam). Later on, perhaps a brighter output fogs, say 100W Hellas, with yellow covers.

just be sure to not go above 4300k for the HIDs and youd be fine, anything above that is to blue and bad with rain and snow yada yada
BurtonCR 10-10-2004 02:29 PM

To get the same look as GrandAM cars you need yellow HIDs. They only sell them in Europe and Japan. Im pretty sure they are illegal in the US. IIRC they are something like 3000k, but I might be wrong.

ChrisRC 10-10-2004 02:49 PM

Thanks for all the information guys. If I ever scrape together the cash, I'll probably purchase the OEM STi HIDs. I don't trust the aftermarket HID companies enough to give them $400+. :D The idea of putting yellow covers over the fogs is pretty good, though it's unfortunate I only have the small foglights . . .
Extraze 10-10-2004 07:35 PM

i replaced my Highbeams with MTEC yellow (golden) Bulbs.

the difference is awesome, of course, it is not brighter than a normal halogen bulb, but the problem i find with bright colored lights (blue or white) is that alot of that brightness is reflected back at your eyes, and this effect does not occur with yellow lights.

plus the fact that yellow light scatters much more than other colors. Blue or white has a tendency to illuminate a certain spot, where a yellow bulb will illuminate evenly twice as far as a normal bulb.

i will post pictures in a moment.

here are 2 picture of how they look on the car :

If anyone wants the headlight film or fog light film in yellow or other colors let us know. We will beat anyones prices including lamin-x. We are always having sales on the product as well. Check the vendor section or shoot us an email.

new shopping cart is coming soon as well.

im kinda split i think the yellow on the headlights looks good like reminds me of a track car, but i think if i saw it on the street id think someone pissed on your headlights
drivrswntd 10-11-2004 06:55 PM

From what i was told the lamin-x if you need to take it off comes off easily. I took some pictures of the car in the day, and 1 with the lights on for ya. The dv valve is missing because i have a sard bov and it is relocated to under the intercooler.

theicewall 10-11-2004 07:44 PM

What about blue, would that decrease the light intensity as a result? Is there any loss in brightness from the yellow lamin-x ? I would assume that anytime you filter white light you are loosing some of the brightness...
piker28 10-11-2004 07:45 PM

^blue would descrese light output

again that yellow im kinda back and forth on it. although most didnt like my yellow covered fogs but they grew on me so i say nice job on being original
drivrswntd 10-11-2004 08:43 PM

They dont seem any darker, but technically they are slighter darker, due to the light passing through a filter.
AK_2002_WRX 10-12-2004 02:59 AM

your car looks great! hows the sard bov sound?
AK_2002_WRX 11-13-2004 06:09 AM

any pictures of the lights on in the dark?

i'm debating on yellow or blue film for the headlights...
RC0310 11-13-2004 11:08 AM

drivrswntd, did the light output improve or worsen after the film was put on?

Thanks =)

btw, it looks really nice on your car when the lights are on :)
i'm debating on yellow or blue film for the headlights...
Imho, even regular (uncolored) bulbs on the low beam can cause unwanted glare in dense fog. Given that, I wouldn't consider blue film.
any pictures of the lights on in the dark?
Not exactly what you're looking for here, but here are comparison on uncolored low beam & yellow tinted fogs. The yellow tint is darker than a single layer of yellow Lamin-X, but although it does appear yellow in person, it barely looks as yellow as the Optilux projector fogs w/o yellow coating also shown in the pictures below.

The setup, unlighted. Regular low beams, yellow tinted oem fogs, non-tinted Optilux fogs on the grille side pieces.

Relative color when seen head-on. The Optilux projectors give out the deepest yellow hue.

OEM low beam + yellow tinted OEM fog:

OEM low beam only, for color comparison with the above:

exhacker 11-14-2004 09:10 PM

All other things being equal (housing, optics, lenses, reflectors) HIDs are better than normal lights. Cheap HIDs are bad because they are either too focused or too diffuse. The diffusion is less common... I see a lot of aftermarket HIDs which are laser-beam tight. Horrible for wet weather and curvy roads, but great for cross-country interstate driving.

My WRX page

Check this out for pics of my Lamin-x Foglight covers. It's amazing how much detail you can see with the yellow lights. I no longer hesitate to throw the car into tight corners and aim for the inside... I know with confidence that I can see what's coming, rain, shine, fog or snow. I want to hook them up so I can do fogs-only when I start doing more early-morning driving.

My suggestion would be the European STi lights, with some Hella driving lights. Expensive as crap, but the best lights & looks for the price. I don't regret the Lamin-X, since I can drive with a little  on each shoulder now.

i got them from e-bay for around 20$ + shipping. they have been through -40's and long trips where i had my highbeams ON all the time, it's been more than 6 months now and never had a problem.

just search for MTEC on ebay and you will get all of their lights ... check for the "Ion Yellow / golden" style
