http://www.rally-america.com/story.php?article=100
Colin!
richard
pastrana
foust
block
Iorio
Choiniere
They are waiting to hear from some others and at least two spots will be named from the finishers at maine and STPR.
cool to see colin in the lineup. i think pat can take him. it has been a while since colin has driven a car of equivalent spec as a RA open class car.

IMO it really doesn't matter what car you put Colin in, he will be close to the top if not @ the top against the rest of those drivers.

i agree, i am sure he will adapt just fine though since his best driving was done before the steering wheel mounted shifters were around.
edited becuase i have repeatedly been made aware that colin rallies a old RWD escort in UK championships.

Crash McRae FTW!!!!! I want to meet that guy.
You guys can rag on Travis but I met the guy at the Sno*Drift rally up here and he's an awsome guy. Plus how may guys can say they Rally, Moto/Super X, Super Moto, Stunt Ride, and drive Monster Trucks? I would die if I got sponsered for one.

dumb question, purely because i havent been really following the xgames rally thing, but are the drivers going to be in their normal cars, or in some kind of spec supplied car ala ROC?
and good to see matt in the list there!

Mad Mike Halley lives in Tulsa and I was talking to him as he is going to be the manager and crew for Cowboy Kenny. Kenny has an invite to the Xgames in 2wd but is trying to run his newly prepped STI from VSC at Maine or STPR, cause if he was to win at either in the STI. He would get an invite in 4wd. Kenny bought Mike Halley's bug to get seat time and used it too a P win at 100AW.

Colin is a fantastic promotional move all the casual, non rally fans, fans will still know who is from the video games so all the better. Will Grist be co-driving?
| Phil Jr. | 05-17-2006 11:33 PM |
joking aside im pretty excited about xgames rally. Maybe this will get the younger generations into rally more and give WRC a future audience in the US.

I believe the idea is to give US rally a future audience in the US.
I don't know if the drivers will be in their "normal" cars, but they won't be equal, or "event supplied" cars, and Rally-America open class rules will be (strictly  ) enforced. I imagine that deals are being made concering car use / sponsorship, etc.

you dont think interest in US rally will lead to interest in WRC? Seems logical as WRC is the pinnicle of rally racing.

Let the WRC promote the WRC. (limited) Resources in the US would be better used to promote US events and competitors, rather than counting on some residual effect of having the WRC circus in for a week.
Has the USGP done anything for american road racing?
edit: by US competitors I mean the competitors who support the US events, including Pat, ACP, Norm, etc..

Colin= 1st place or crash
I'm very happy to see this get some publicity. Gets the US just a tad closer for a potential (albeit difficult) chance at a WRC event.

it's always great to compare such brilliant drivers, who have never competed against each other. the only question i have - with those liberal rules of Open class - who can provide McRae with a car that matches Pastrana's or Block's Subaru supported cars?

It should be easy to source considering the top of the field in US rallying is still made up of cars best described as Group N+, and not yet taking full advantage of the open class rules. (Iorio may be the exception)
Pastrana, Block, Pinker's cars appear to be Group N cars with a few mods and a 34mm restrictor. The SRTUSA cars were both 500+lbs over the Open class minimum weight at Oregon trail.
I've heard rumors of new cars on the way from many competitors..

That's a fine looking list. Neat to see Colin attending, as well as very fast people here who haven't been able to come out this year :D
| XenoWolf | 05-18-2006 10:32 AM |
I'm not worried about the WRC exposure involved in this event, I'm really hoping it brings more public awareness of Rally America (and subsequently NASA Rallysport). More fans equals more sponsorships for the competitors.

All Buffum would have to do is bring out the other hyundabishi and put a hurting on at STPR to earn himself a "legit" spot...
I still don't get the whole WRC to USA thing. Why would we want an event to draw from what resources there are, overshadow the emerging US championships, and that would provide no direct tangible benefits to US competitors (because it's not like anyone has a WRCar or that PWRC gets any mention...)? WRC Mexico is perfect, make a cheap vacation out of it (probably cheaper if you lived over 700 miles away in the US to go to Mexico anyway...)

I used to actually be very interested in US rally, went to events etc. So don't take this the wrong way...but emerging US Championships??? Frankly, I think you'll be saying that 5 years from now. Rally in the us has been in a hole for several years, and except for the very limited numbers of people that are involved in it daily, the rest of use have lost interest and moved on.
But that could almost be said of the WRC for many fans too.

Love to see Buffum there...and he could earn a legit spot I'm sure. I could also see him being an alternate of sorts. IE, someone gets hurt, or a last minute dropout. I would think there would have to be alternates to insure a full field on race day

If anything, a US event becoming a WRC would only be good press (and business) for whoever got the event. There's talk about a WRC round in Ireland and they've got at least three different organizers, so there has to be a way to overcome the "RA or NASA" issue when choosing a venue.

Yes, Colin was in Rally Australia this past November. He got a factory Skoda as high as second place and looked set to finish the rally in third before a problem changing the clutch in service put him out of the event two stages from the end. Feel free to believe that Colin's not still fast. He's going to prove you wrong come August.
(And yes, he did drive without the paddle shift, because the semi-auto shifter failed and he had to drive using the manual backup.)
I can't say just how jazzed I am about all this. I wish they would hurry up and annouce where the stages are going to be so I can go and make my hotel reservations. I am so not missing Colin McRae coming to my state.

Well, remember that McRae was paid circa $7 million a year driving for Subaru and who knows how much driving for Ford. He's a former World Rally Champion, and still quicker going down twisty little gravel roads than almost any other human alive.
Somehow I doubt he'll have trouble landing a competitive ride. ;)

I'm very happy to see this get some publicity. Gets the US just a tad closer for a potential (albeit difficult) chance at a WRC event.
IMO, Colin has "grown up" a bit in the last few years since he didn't get a factory ride in the WRC (probably because of his all or nothing mantra) and will finish this without a problem (from his driving)
As for what car he'll drive, I'm sure there'll be a very up to spec car with him behind the wheel.
My question is...how can I get tickets to see this extravaganza...*cough*ChristianEdstromHookABrothaUp*cough* :D

Have to agree. I like that kid Pastrana. I met him in the pits at a supercross race a few years back. He was very personable, not at all snotty like some of his competitors at the time were. I think folks get a tad jealous b/c he comes into rally with a lot of resources immediately at hand (brought in from his previous racing exploits) and they're like "he didn't earn it!".
I figure he earned it busting his hump racing supercross/motocross for years... he didn't produce a lot of wins up in the 250 ranks, but it wasn't for lack of effort... he was a "win-it, or bin-it" kind of racer (which is probably what attracted him to rally in the first place).
If nothing else, he's good for Rally b/c he's got the 'star power' to bring in fans... which the sport sorely needs.
You guys can rag on Travis but I met the guy at the Sno*Drift rally up here and he's an awsome guy. Plus how may guys can say they Rally, Moto/Super X, Super Moto, Stunt Ride, and drive Monster Trucks? I would die if I got sponsered for one.

IMO, Colin has "grown up" a bit in the last few years since he didn't get a factory ride in the WRC (probably because of his all or nothing mantra) and will finish this without a problem (from his driving)
As for what car he'll drive, I'm sure there'll be a very up to spec car with him behind the wheel.
the real question is...
Will McRae debut his 2.5 NA AWD prototype car which is scheduled to be finished this summer?
Unlikely but it would be interesting!

I never said it was an accurate rumor...it was just a rumor I heard (or more likely misheard...)
... there are some names missing from the list that i would have expected to see
DCH perhaps?
I tried to weasel my way in but they shut the door on me with fervor. So much for the dictator thing... :D
Actually I have no interest in being famous, I'm anti-photogenic, and busy with the management aspect of things so it was never a consideration. But thank you for thinking of me!
Cheers,
-Doug

that article makes me wonder what colin's future plans are. seems like a lot of trouble to go through for a one off car.
DCH said they wanted to pick drivers that had supported/would support rallying in North America in the past/future.

It would be great to see C, A and J McRae all over here...
I'd feel right at home again!

Hmm, maybe VTSC is just giving McRae one of thier already-built loaners? It would be awesome to see Colin in the series, but I'm not reading too much into this yet.
