Motorsports is changing as we know it........

4:12 AM cant sleep and so I decide to go down stairs and watch TV, or at least let the TV watch me fall back asleep, maybe I'll even dream about being a ALMS driver with SNOOP as my crew chief and Anna Nicole as the team principle.. :D
So I go to the dust bowl and pull out the VCR, and find some rca jacks, hook this thing up to the regular 4x3 TV( HD 16x9 wouldnt look good).....
"..lets see,...Indy car Detroit 96'..........nahhhhh,........F1 Monaco 97,....nahhhhh.........OOOOWWWWW Rally De France 98,...YESSSSSSS !!"
So I pop in this old VHS tape of Rally De France and WOW,...Colin McRae in a WRC98 car, without the sequential shift,..these guys were actually driving. Liatti drifting through triple apex corners with one hand on the wheel and the other shifting at the exit of the corners,...!!!!! WOW,.the wife even stuck her down and said ,.." what the fu-....oh wow, that's old stuff huh?....
Yes I told her and back to sleep she went,....but it dawned on me, as that WRC segment ended and a Surfers Paradise IndyCar event came on next on this old tape,..that Motorsports is changing and we all need to get out and go to more events to feel and smell these cars and experience it first-hand.
6:19 AM I fall back asleep into a deep emotional dream and start buckling up my Takata Harness belt,...."Takata?....this cant be a Audi R8,...it has Sabelt harnesses......as I realize this is a SKYLINE R34 GTR !! I am on pole at Suzuka for the season finale of the points races in JGTC GT500 class. Garth Brooks is my crew chief and Snoop is the team principle,..huh?..SNoop?..great, cant wait to see what the trailor looks like !!
6:25 Turn one (still dreaming), I over take the NISMO 350Z and as I track out I am punted into the gravel traps by the CALSONIC NSX and I begin to here my wife,..things are wooozy for a moment and I am being told in my headset to take out the trash,..........ohhhhhhh mannnnn my head hurts ,..bad. " did you hear me honey?..dont forget to take out the trash...."
Ok,..yeah sure,..dawg,." rough night,...................
8:30 AM I check e-mail and Rallyzone.com has headlines. "Peugeot and Citron Will Not Pursue Participation in World Rally Championship beyond 2005."
So its not just me,..things are changing and we all need to get out and autocross at some point, do a track day,.drive a back road, go for a ride in a racecar at the track at lunch time,..something, even buy GT4 in a month or so. Dont justwatch SPEED and eat a cheesesteak and take a knap. Go to your local indoor go-kart track and join the league for 250.00. Dont just let this era come and go and miss out. I know next year we are going to 24Hr Daytona, Sebring, LeMans, and a host of ALMS races. As well as our regular racing support and my managing of my 4 year old baby Senna starting in comet 50cc go-karts. But I am starting with the JGTC event in December and thats more of a treat than the old FIA-GT series, as its like a 23 hr plane ride to JAPAN ( I think)..and these cars are coming from more than half way around the world.
With SCCA not supporting rallying in the USA any longerand this latest blow to the WRC,...it may be difficult to be able to turn on the TV and see these monsters on tarmac and gravel, tear it up. Its been a luxury for some of us in regions of the US with cable and SPEED channel. That could all go away and we are just left with blank-car circle racing.
9:39 AM As I drop my son off at daycare, he ask me ,.." Daddy, can we go to the go-kart track tonight?......" I tell him,...." sure,.....no problem at all.
He is the next generation of racers in this country and I will do everythingin my power to get him as far as I can afford. Thru people I know, money and my own influence he will go far, as I watch him with his Champion Audi ALMS shirt on walking into school.

Hee Hee....It's nice to see other people obsessed with racing.
I have a little boy coming in january...and it's going to be tough for sure.... I know all the time racing took me away from school and everything else..... but the wife is supportive.
I'm in between rides right now in the ALMS....got a phone call about doing one of the IRL road races last week... not sure where it's headed. But it's tough!! for all the aspiring racers there are probably a handful of seats available at any given time...and we are competing against lots of talent from different countries where they have companies that are willing to throw in millions of dollars for them..
Keep plugging away... (myles and son)...and everyone else out there that has racing aspirations... I am doing the same.... it hasnt been easy for me either...but we keep on plugging....
Anytime anyone is at the track for ALMS weekends...please let me know...
for now...in the offseason before testing....ill throw my ambition into making some cool race-derived WRX/STi parts...
Just some thoughts...

My 14 year old isn't that excited about ACTUALLY BEING at a track ... he finds his kicks doing it on his Playstation. I loved going to the races with my dad ... but a lot of kids these days would rather do it on their video gaming consuls. Maybe he'll get a kick out of it when we go to the JGTC and Drifting events at CA Speedway in December. And take him to the Jim Hall Jr. go-kart school ...

Awesome, Im not the only one who can't sleep at night because their up thinking about motorsports :D
There is nothing more that I would want to do than be a driver in any racing series. I have my start here with the local auto-X events, and when I can afford to add some suspension, wheels/tires, and brakes to my WRX, I hope that I can persue national level competition (with lots of practice and instruction first). Id also like to get involved with track days, and learn how to drive on a track.
Who knows where it will end up at. I'm doing it because I love motorsports. The other guys in my suite (college sophomore) leave their TVs on MTV most of the time, aside from when they watch football, my TV is on SPEED all the time. Sure, they throw comments out at me, but I don't mind, because I live for motorsports.
I would hate to see WRC, F1, ALMS, etc. disappear because people can "race" around the courses on their consoles instead of being in the drivers seat. Motorsports will always be changing, but I just hope the changes can be made for the best of motorsports so that future generations can enjoy them as much as I and others do.

Myles,
I have never road raced a day in my life......BUT, it is my single biggest love affair outside of my son and my wife...........
I dream about it very often....in color.
I attend top level road racing as much as my schedule will allow.
I agree STRONGLY, that there is simply no substitute for being there; the sights, the sounds, the SMELL....I get nervous just watching racers strap in to their prototypes and BLAT,POP,CRACK out of their paddock garages.............
Even if one never gets a chance to actually race, you can still "experience" it!
Which brings me to final point: How small a world is it, really, amongst enthusiasts?!!?
I was at the Petit LeMans Road Atlanta ( an event I attend annually) a couple of years ago looking at an Audi S4, in silver, parked on the hill road to paddock entrance. My brother, (kiddjoey and MTM/RS4 pumped S4 owner) was informing me of the owner, a Mr. Chad Block, and how he was co-driving an LMP 675, an MG Lola, if i recall correctly that year. An then wammo...fast forward 2004, I see CRBD posting here...
Its a small world and DOH! Ain't the internet just too cool!

There is something to be said for the personality type that goes out in the rain and risk it all for a dozen or so spectators, and self satidfaction. I realized this when I did my first race in the rain and approached turn 10 at about 110 mph, let the clutch out too hard, and I watched everything go 360 like a bad Speedracer episode, without the crazy narrator voice. I was lucky as the car came back to dead straight, and I was still going about 80,.turned in, floored it, and never lost the lead. Going down the straight away took 12 years it felt, as alot of things went thru my head. Do I really want to do this?...Am I good?....why am I out here?............
Before I knew it, it was time to brake again, excpet this time,..I was smoooooth ,..and the car seemed to bond with me,.as it had seen its life flash before its eyes also. From that point on, its been one way,.... commited.
Thats the only way. The rest (except money and sponsorship) will come in time.

I agree with you that sports are changing..everyone dropping this or that being teams, formats and coverage...it really stinks, I'm a regular at the local indoor karting place, and in Formula SAE. Auto-x whenever I can and wish we had local rally-esque format locally but I guess I have to go to Oakland Acres...will have to make a trip out there eventually when I'm not consumed here with the Formula car.

Myles,
I suspect that dream of yours is even more vividly colored than expressed in words.
We've talked about as much before and I look forward to seeing Baby944TG rippin' up a track, and not just the kind setup on a family room floor.
I'm sure with your wisdom, expertise & backing as well as Mrs. 944's love there wont be anything Baby944TG can't do as he blows off competitors doors.
Keep on truckin! :)

Myles, welcome to my world. :D
IMO, the WRC is slowly fading away. Citroen and Peugeot are gone and those new 'propsed' rules for the WRC. If the rules stick, for sure Subaru will be gone too.
I liked rally before they have sequencial shifters. Technology should not replace driving experience.
If the WRC really wanted to cut costs, go back to Group A like in the early 90s.

With all of the talk of motorsports getting gutted, can anyone forsee it going back in a limited way to how it was before it go so commercial - more private racers with not so advanced machines?
This may mean that there are no more multi-million dollar contracts for drivers, but there will be races to attend (hopefully)

At least I am not the only one who drifts off to sleep with visions of racing dancing in my head. I come from a drag racing background, but circumstances have prevented me from participating in the last several years. I bought a wrx last Feb. and the love for motorsports was instantly revived. I went to an autox driving school hosted by my local region and raced in 2 events this year. I am now hooked on turning. Then last Sunday the worst thing possible happened to me. We had a track day at the local 1.8 mile 14 turn road course. My car had just been tuned on a dyno the weekend before and I was ready to try out my 310hp. It was just a fun event. The local Subaru dealers paid for the track and lunch for a wrx\sti day. The first session I learned the line around the course. The 2nd session the instructor told me to just go. I passed a car each lap after that, including stis. I am now hooked. I can't afford a dedicated race car right now, but I will spend the next several years building the wrx. Till then i'll just keep autoxing. I hope to have my competition license by the middle of next year. I already have had one instructor sign off on me. I will never race a big time series or be on TV, but I can't think of anything more fun to do. I love my wife, my job, and I get to go racing every now and then. Life couldn't be much better. Well, maybe if I win the powerball this weekend.

I have one from summer of 92' and its an old IMSA tape with GTp cars on it....sweeeeet. Oh and the best one is the whole season of 1988 SCCA PRO racing with the AUDI 5000 racecar that redefined the meaning of fear and its association with FWD And TURBOCHARGERS...............I only play it twice a yeat for special "race parties".....

Few years ago I bought the kid a alcohol kart to run at the local track. Long story short, few years pass and one day the kid says to me....this is your dream dad...I prefer video games! Dang near broke my heart. Make it worse, kid was above average driver and a few more races I expected him to podium.
Fast forward...his old man buys a WRX and NOW since the kid has matured he thinks he should SOLO2 "Pops" WRX.
Think I will let him............NOT.....I'm having too much fun myself!

Coming from a musical family, where my Dad toured with most of the famous artist from the 60s,70s, and 80s...and my brother who as well, toured with the same groups and alot of the newer large acts out ther in the 80s and 90s,....I of course ended up , by default being a very good drummer and bass player and did some touring myself. I can remember getting whipped for not practicing and for missing notes in band practice(my dad was by day an instrumental music teacher and I had him as a teacher in elementary school) I remember getting the same treatment when listening to rock music or anything other than old school traditional JAZZ. My older brother could'nt even listen to Chuck Mangione, which was more like smooth jazz bad in the early 80s.
My point here is this, there is a lot of pressure on any young person who comes from a _______family. (input whatever the passion is) My son has been exposed to racing from about the time he was 3 months old. If he started crying I could take him in the garage and start up the Porsche( open the garage door) sit with him in the Porsche and he would calm down. Mind you, no heat, no side windows, no carpet, just raw racecar. When I would take him back inside he would cry again. At 6 months old we harnessed his baby seat into the pass side Recaro SPG and took him for a ride around the block, floating rotors clanking, differential clackin', pad swealin, and exhuast smell( cam 2).......he didnt cry and never looked at me. I took him out and and he cried. 18 months old,I held him while I 5mph idled around at a indoor gokart track and let him hold the wheel. So at 3 years old when he, with padding drove the kiddies karts, it was second nature.
I dont have to influence him any longer. He is now a product of his environment. He likes it, and now at almost 5, will be able to go to the big races and hang out all day, esp if I drive next year.
I have friends growing up who wanted my life and I wanted there's. One guy for 8 years had a 40k a year budget for racing. So its all relative. I am desperately seeking sponsorship for Pro racing and feel that my son's involvement in racing will be of his own decision. I can remember being whipped with a belt and made to practice. So my son wont pushed, forced or manipulated into racing. If he does it, it will be because he wants to. I have even started placing emphasis on the "smart guy" behind the pitwall rather than the driver, so maybe he wont put all his eggs in one basket. That way, if he ended up going to a tech school and getting degree in mechanical engineering, he would be able to do anything. After all , the best drivers are the one's who understand whats going on.

Emotional stuff to say the least, but its the truth. I know my dad meant well and was just trying to teach us a trade, and he went about it the only way he knew. I am lucky, because I can go out a play a gig for 4 hours and make 400.00 if I wanted to, but music isnt my "thing". Racing is. My son knows that he can take whatever path he chooses and that I think is the main thing.

Methinks you had no idea where it would morph when you started it; should be a sticky for all those wondering how a motorsports addiction can affect one's life ;)

Hey with all this reminiscing does anybody remember when someone cared what happened in Indycar or IRL or Cart or whatever they are now.
I blame that Tony guy.
Without doing a web search who won the last 4 Indy 500's.
I miss Camel GTP and Camel Lights
Juan Fangio Jr. Parker Johnstone.
Toyota vs. Nissan.
Watchign teh 1.2 liter 900 hp Toyotas going 1-2 around the track and making amusing passes where one would go to the left of a car and one would go to the right.
The Audi Quattro's driven by Hans Stuck (who was even better at driving 911's)
Oh I miss those races where drivers looked like they had fun and weren't doing this as a "business"
Just saw a Nascar spot on ESPN. Look at all of the current drivers 25-35 flashy smile and good looks. My ass they are the best that can turn left in this country. There are some good-ol boys with three teeth 4 chins and 2 beer bellies that are probably better.
Sorry to go on a rant. But it was fun to ridicule Nascar and Indycar

My favorite race cars of all time:
Porsche 917/30
Toyota Eagle MK III
Williams FW15C
IMO, racing has changed from the ideal of mechanical innovation (Chapparal anyone?) to mechanical refinement. Todays rules are simply too restrictive for any totally new outside the box thinking. You now find the racing with the most passing in series where there is relatively low areodynamic sensitivity and the cars are not all the same (I'll plug the Speed World Challenge series that I've been a crew member on since the start of the 2001 season). The top tiers of racing are all now so either aero sensitive or the cars are so close to being identical that it makes passing very difficult. For me, passing is a big part of what makes racing fun to watch.

Cooley !!! YOu have the same VIVID memory of the old daze as I do. PArker Johnstone put Comptech on the MAP !! You ask some kid in a Honda with a wing that scrapes underpasses who he is, and he is clueless !!!
YEs I watched Willy T. RIbbs and Scott Pruett fight it out in IMSA for years and SCCA TRANS AM too !!
If I were stupid rich(even regular rich ) I would buy ALMS and GRAND-AM and make it into one again and maske a deal with ESPN, SPEED, MSNBC and FOX to lock in for 10 years whcih would maybe secure the series for a while. THen have 4 classes out there and a race weekend would be 3 days of ALOT of racing.
ALMS, DAYTONA PROTOTYPES,GTS, GT, SPEED WORLD CHALLENGE GT,TOURING CAR, (COMBINES GRAND AM CLASSES ALSO)SCCA TRANS-AM,
BRING BACK PANOZ WOMENS GLOBAL SERIES,AND HAVE A CELEBRITY RACE OF BABES TOO !! Oh dont forget IMSA WSC(World SPorts CAr) and have a FIA like Exotic category like the FIA GT series from 97'.......
Have the Barber Dodge and karting also. Make it a true show. Ticket prices would be higher but it would be worth it and the purses would be big a poo also !!
Thats how IMSA used to be. IMSA and SCCA in the same weekend and Trans-Am.
Oh and bring IMSA back to Summit Point and other smaller tracks, where its not just about power and big budgets................
At the end of each year, have an all-star event with F1 drivers, WRC drivers, dirt track, NAscar(I know, but you have to be fair), karting, Jet boat racers, and here is the most important part,.......have a raffler of 10 non Proracers who are up and coming and have no money ( :D :D :D )who can show the big boys how level the playing field is, without money !! Let the small broke guys race with the big boys,..actually that's a great reality show right there,.hmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn............................................
let a Camera crew follow someone(cough-me) around for a year as (I)a person gets ready for LeMans or a season in ALMS,in say LMP-2. Damn, this sounds good !!!!
Throw this person in a GT car first and then ease him (or her) into a LMP-2 car at familiar USA tracks, then work them up to LeMans..........................
ANYWAY..............yes I miss the old days.

Took my son (6 yrs old) to school in the company 350Z....... (i know - no back seat...please spare me a moment)
Accelerating 'briskly' I looked over and he was SMILING.....then he said "Daddy, the engine sounds so angry!! Yeah!!"
Priceless
I hadda wait till I was 40 to get on the track and finally said to myself do it now or do it never.....
Anyone wanna buy some good used golf clubs, bag, shoes, tees, ??
Caution political content coming
I don't like fighting a war so soccer moms can burn the blood of our soldiers in there giant SUV's but I'd fight to save the priveledge of safe, fun motorsports activities...
Compare the attitude of parents at the local Friday night HS football game (atrocious) to what you typically see at a lapping day session at tracks across the country.....its not even close.
The new days aren't so bad for us weekend types.....
Still buzzing from Monday!!

Have you been to a High School football game in Texas??
Hard competition is one thing - but I'd guess that people didn't cheer when a driver crashed his car/kart.
I know your joking a little bit - my point is I think most people think they don't win unless the other guy loses. And that just takes the fun out of it.

My only point was that I've seen some embarrasingly rabid parents/crew go at each other for perceived infractions one 12 year old pulled on another.
I was only kidding up there however......
And yes, I have attended H/S football in Texas....I lived in Lake Jackson for over 10 years and "enjoyed" many games for my brother at Brazoswood H/S.

I saw more fights at regional and nation go-kart races between parents than anywhere. It gets pretty heated...most of it is dad's that couldnt afford a kart that have their son racing, and they want it more than their kids do.
My last year in karts I raced against scott pruett, lyn st james, sam hornish, mark dismore and some others....
hornish wasnt quick at all in karts, but DAMN is he good in IRL.

I used to go watch the races at Road Atlanta when i lived there in the early 90's, what a stunning circuit, very much like Oulton Park over here. They introduced a chicane since then i believe, before the pits entry if memory serves me right. It must be awesome in a GT sports racer.

A few years ago i hunted down some Video Tapes of the old CanAm races, the former race series queen, Marylin Fox Halder put these together. If you want to see some of the original races visit her website, i bought the lot. http://www.foxyventures.com/index.htm

I was really thinking about getting cable and the speed channel too... Seriuosly, is the WRC gone? What happend? When the champs retire does that mean the end for everyone? Couldn't they have just hired some stupid people to drive and lose so that the sport could live on?

Well it still exists, its just not broadcasted in the US on Speed anymore. However, you can download the Eurosport coverage, which is amazing.

Agreed.
It's just not the same anymore. I will be launching myself with my super-limited budget, into motorsports within the next year, and hoping for the best.
It seems like all people want nowdays is money. And that's what you need to get started now, LOTS of it.
What happened to the days where you could buy any old car, a helmet, and just go out and have fun?

Well motorsports need to evolve as well as everything in the world. It might look more amazing back then but the technology at which the cars are at (F1, WRC, ALMS, and what have you) is just amazing. Years from now, we'll look back at the present and we'll say the exact same thing.

I'm in Hong Kong right now, and on an english channel there was a WRC coverage of a rally (even more extensive than speed :disco: ), but being there was only one TV in the flat, the rest of the family decided to catch their chinese soap opera :(
Now I think that would've been my last opportunity to catch the WRC on TV :( Really depressing.
I do wholeheartedly agree with experiencing motorsports firsthand in person. I have a hard time accomplishing this as it has been a little late for me to put aside any time for it. I never came from a motorsport family, nor any automotive related background, and not even a professional background. Your son Myles is very lucky to have a father like you. :)

Myles,
have you ever thought about starting a blog? I mean thats a great piece of writing. Its so true that today the racing that we seem to enjoy is no longer the norm (ie we like to make left and right turns ;)) and every time i dont see an A1 or an WRC race its sad. I mean i remember watching rally as a kid and screaming "WOW" as the went over a jump. Its that type of excitement(sp?) that i have for real racing. Its just now I'm finding that i have the time (and money) to start going to races and HPDEing my car.
Its sad that there is no real push to have more live (non nascar) events. I remember the speed GT with gary reading updates on HERE because the race was not on. Although i watched it the week later and still cheered like it was live, it was kinda sad that they were playing nascar re-runs and not a live race :(
Still, i think you should start writing these more often, i always love reading your threads!

I wanted to go to the Grand-Am races at VIR this weekend, but no one could go with me. :(
Just couldn't do the 4 hour trip there and back alone. Yeah. I'm a wimp. I should have just gone!

I drove to the Cleveland Grand Prix in 1993, sick, hung over, had the poops......got a ticket on the way , got a flat on the way back and lost my money on the last day.............................cop filled up my tank in Ohio....
but I loved it ....... lol
Thats when I met Willy T. Ribbs for the first time and Mansell, and Danny Sullivan. I end up dating the Walker Racing PR chic and went to INDY car rcaes for the rest of the season. So it was worth it.
Another time, Jon W. called me at 5 o clock on a Friday night and wanted to drive to Watkins Glen to a PSCR( series called Professional Sports Car Racing)
then defunct IMSA,...endurance race.
So we set out in his E36 M3 4 door to Watkins Glen. We get to the PA line and get a flat....with no spare to fit the brakes type deal..we get "roll backed" home and decide WTF, lets take the Porsche. With Lexan glass, new Hoosier, full cage, a twin plate clutch and 2 Recaro SPG's we set out( 6 hr drive) to the Glen. First I knocked the front camber back to about -1.0 and we set the toe real fast.
So we get to the Glen and its a nice field of cars and we are having a great time. The car is getting alot of attention. White 944 turbo, 18inch Fikse, on 285 front and 305 rear Hoosiers, Big crazy brakes, B & B exhaust and 968 RS rear wing, for back in the day we were motorsport pimped !! lol.
So as we sit in the grand stands by the chicane drinking Spaten .....pit, pat,...pit ..pat.....then we noticed the BLACK CLOUDS........then the ceiling DROPPED out the SKY !!! "Run for cover..."
So anyone who has been to Watkins Glen in that era knows it used to become a MUD BOWL !! And it did, and we had Hoosiers !! So we went from Motorsport Pee-imped to very stuck no matter where we went to try and watch the racing.
At any rate, the weekend turned very sloppy very fast............
BUT WE ENJOYED it....it was prob the most memorable time we had. That weekend is brought up anytime someone complains on race weekends about it being too.."anything" at all.
(sorry for the rambling).

It was either that or see Hoosier cord, which are true cords..lol. Figure this, when we got back there was a little bit of inner wear but not alot. Those fronts were retired for "transport" use later when getting body work etc done.
