1st NASA Event at Miller Motorsports Park, Crawford STi vs. Ford GT, (Video Inside)

NASA HPDE/race, Miller Motorsports Park, Utah
May 20-21: NASA HPDE/race, Miller Motorsports Park, Utah
The Crawford Performances shop car makes the trip to Miller Motorsports Park, just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah for some testing and comes home with a 3rd place in TTU class and fastest Subaru overall. Subaru TTU driver, Russ Warr began the weekend with a practice day on Friday to soak in as much of the 4.5 mile, 24 corner track. Dr. Warr said, 'While the track was difficult to remember, it was a great experience to race down the straight away 3 cars abreast and still plenty of room to breath.'

The competition between the Ford GT and Crawford STi was a site to see, no one would have expected a Subaru to keep up with a Ford GT. Saturday, Russ Warr lead most of the day over the Ford GT snagging 3rd in the TTU class, while the Ford GT took 4th. Sunday the world spun a little faster, early on Dr. Russ Warr threw down the gauntlet churning a 3:20.289, 2 seconds faster than the previous day, and a full 20 seconds faster than the next fastest Subaru.
With speeds in excess of 145 mph, Dr. Warr pushed his Crawford Performance 2004 STi to a new Subaru track record. The Ford GT did not give up easily and later that day managed to pull in a 3:20.014, nudging past the Subaru.

All in all it was a great weekend, 10 sessions, 3.5 hours of track time and it was time to come home. Congrats go out to Russ Warr and William Knose on a successful and long weekend. So how did this all go down?
Tuesday May 16, I get a call from Chiropractor extraordinaire Russ Warr:
Russ - 'Hey you want to go and check out the new Miller Motorsports track? It supposed to be this new way cool new 4.5 mile long circuit, the longest in North America' Blah blah blah
Chris - 'Sure sounds great. When?'
Russ - 'We leave this Thursday!'
Chris 'Man Russ, your killing me (long pause) Fine lets do it!'
Russ 'One more thing.(long pause)can I drive your 2005 Sti Demo car?'
Chris 'Dont ask for much, do ya! Fineonly if you spring for the tires and beer.'
Russ 'Deal'
And that, is they say was that
Well almost. I bailed out and asked I-Speed USA tuner William (Bill) Knose to go in my place. I forgot I double booked this weekend. As such, I stayed true to my word and took care of some prior engagements. Besides, I was already hating on that 14 hour drive! LA to Utah on one long lonely road in the middle of the nightyuck!
Anyway, Russ and Bill had a good time beating on the car. Russ took 3rd in class with a 3:20.289. The competition, Factory Five (3:16.909), Ford GT (3:20.014), Race Prepped RX-7 (3:21.865 ) and Pro-Charger Vette (3:22.099).

To the guys at Crawford and I Speed...thanks for a great weekend..... :D
Lets go to Buttonwillow June 9, 10 and 11....
The facility at Miller is second to none. All curbs are FIA.....this track could host F1, Nascar, Indy cars etc.....
If you have a chance to drive this track take the trip it is worth it!!!!!
The car did great even with a full interior, stereo, amps and no roll cage!!!!
BTW we took the sub out of the trunk.......
Thanks again....

cobb is still working on that car, sorting it out. I can't wait to head up there to try that track!

Our car ran a 3:20.8 on Sunday, second time its ever set tires on a track (first for MMP) so we still have A LOT of development to do! That car is still VERY much a street car, full interior, and based on the claimed power numbers about 100+ HP down on the Crawford car currently.
The Crawford STI looked great, and Russ is an awesome driver. Many congrats on a great weekend! Next time stop by the trailer and say hi, we don't bite. ;-)

FYI: Our shop demo car has full interior, no cage, decent tunes- Focal speakers, JL Audio amps (still in the car), 10 JL SUB, which we remove for track days. This car is only our Shop Demo car. Some customers either rent it, like Russ, or swing by the shop to take it for a spin. Of course its not as fun to drive as our Time Attack car :D

Hello,
Cool. Congrats! Those are great times. Good enough to run with the USTCC. :D We're always looking to grow the field and the racing isn't very costly...
Here are the caveats - stock suspension mounting points, spec Hankook 235-wide tire, and most cars are extremely power-limited.
Our fastest qualifier was Dave Brown, in the EVO VIII, running at 3450 lbs, 17 psi boost, stock engine and turbo, unleaded 100 octane, etc., turning a 3:20.670.
During the race, the top 4 cars turned the following fastest laps:
Dave Brown in the EVO 8, 3.21.766
Dale Sievwright in a BMW 328is, 3.22.971
Toby Grohovec in a BMW 330i, 3.22.083
and the most surprising to me...
Vesko Kozarov in a Mini Cooper S, 3.21.145
Vesko had all sorts of heat soak issues from the silly stock top mount. We gave him an allowance to run a front mount but he hasn't gotten around to installing one... That little Mini was flying. There was a little too much carnage during the race, otherwise, I think Vesko would have had a chance to push through the BMWs and take the charge to the EVO.
Exciting race, great track, and considering that most of these cars put 200-240 hp at the wheels, pretty awesome driving.
C'mon and join us!
Joel

You're absolutely right Chris, that's because the track ran short of transponders. Wouldn't have mattered much for me as I was driving the car when it had the 775 numbers. We have our own CDS data acquisition onboard that car with its own non-AMB transponder so I can get my times and more importantly see what the car is doing (and my mistakes!). My fastest times in the car were only in the 3:25.x range. I definitely wasn't getting the most from the car, but being my second weekend ever on a road course I'm hopefully of continued improvement. Definitely wasn't 20 seconds slower though.... I mean I'm slow but I'm not THAT slow. ;) At least I'm trying, right? :)
The car started to show its true speed when I let local hot-shoe Matt Guiver drive it on the third session of Sunday. He had a AMB transponder so he was able to record an "official" time. As I assume you're set on proving me as lying (why I'd lie about being slower perhaps only you can explain but whatever) I'm including a pic of the car with Matt driving and his numbers on. You can also talk with Greg G @ NASA, he was aware Matt was driving the car during that session as we cleared it with him prior.
http://www.mylaps.com/results/newResults.jsp?id=326317

And for the record, Matt is an amazing driver but his experience is really in auto-x. This was also his first weekend at a NASA/Time Trial event.
And again, congrats on a great result and weekend. That car looked great and Russ is FAST. Glad you enjoyed our new track out here in Utah. We're pretty excited to finally have something of this caliber to use and test on.
Cheers,
Trey @ COBB

Trey,
Next time i will be sure to stop by..... do you have a splitter on the car???? I was experiencing a major "lack of grip" as you could hear by all the tire noise. I think with a rear wing, splitter and the canards on the car I would have had more grip. The track is still very green and when some rubber gets layed down the track should really pick up some speed. The number of "high speed" turns at this track was insane..... I look forward to going out there again... Nasa was/is talking about a date later this year........ See ya at the races
Russ

Russ,
Nope, no front splitter. Once I get more consistent with my driving I should try pulling the canards off to see if I can actually even notice and quantify a difference. I'd think a front splitter and proper bell pan would be in order to actually gain effectiveness from the canards but my knowledge of racecar aerodynamics comes from the back of Racecar engineering magazine so that doesn't really account for a whole lot. Someone like Marshall [MPME] would be able to weigh in on the subject in a much more intelligent manner.
The high speed sections are fantastic, I agree. Its going to be a great track to continue to learn, test and practice on.
If you guys come out this way again, definitely let me know. We have a team garage out at MMP now with one of our Mustang AWD dynos installed and a two-post lift, if either are ever a need for you guys while you're here.
Cheers,
Trey @ COBB

Trey - Not trying to be right or catch anyone lying  . This is the Motorsports forum, we all are here to have fun and post data from our track results. Truly, your times were not recorded with everyone elses. Thanks for the clarity. Anyway, MMP results are what they are and they will only get better with more and more practice. Certainly, a local driver or a professional always helps too.
As always we look forward to seeing better results for any and all Subarus at the track. Maybe next time we are up there we can video some head to head action. I am sure that would draw a decent crowd and some decent dvd sales!
What place did you end up finishing? Did Matt Qualify your car for Time Attack? Are you guys going to run Unlimited?
Chris
PS. thanks for the updates:) Hard core facts always help people weed out the BS.

It's worth mentioning that a TTB car (97 BMW M3, 270 whp, 2700 lbs) driven by Todd Green of Salt Lake City, UT beat both the Crawford STi and Ford GT by several seconds :p :disco:
Trey - Not trying to be right or catch anyone lying  . This is the Motorsports forum, we all are here to have fun and post data from our track results.
PS. thanks for the updates:) Hard core facts always help people weed out the BS.
Sure about that? That sounds a lot more like the 'Proven Power Bragging" forum you guys post to than this one.
Nobody here that I've seen tries to boast over another shop/tuner much, or feels the need to post a dozen timesheets to try and call someone out.
That Trey said his car did a certain time is more than enough here--no one else questioned it, and when challenged, he disproved that challenge...

Chris - Yes, I believe Matt qualified the car for Time Attack. Originally intended on running Street class to keep it true to what many of our customer's drive but considering the "qually" concept I don't think they really want a true "Street" class car at the Time Attack finale. Its more about Unlimited and Modified. To be competitive there, I think the car would need to be a lot more aggressively modified which sort of leads us away from our original intent. So, we're debating it as we speak honestly. The vehicle serves as an important test bed for our own product development and refinement. I'd hate to lose that by turning it into a race car.
Jeff - You're not trying to tell me the driver makes a difference are ya? :p Todd's pretty awesome, no doubt!

Trey, nice to meet you at MMP.
Todd and Matt were the only drivers that qualified for the national TT thingy at the NASA MMP event.

Chris--the arena I work in and the arena your company works in are completely unrelated, so it'd be hard to have an agenda. My point is that if you want to ask a quation, simply ask a question.
Asking a question, then taking the time to post every single time sheet you have to prove a person's time isn't on any of those sheets goes a wee bit beyond what one might consider 'just asking a question.'
I could care less who's on the receiving end of such questions, just be cool about it, maybe.

FWIW: Its always good to put up information with your questions so that everyone is on the same page. Seriously, leave that crap in the Proven Power Bragging and Drag Racing threads. The "I'm faster than you" bit with relatively inexperienced drivers doesn't fly well in roadracing type forums. We tend to just encourage others to keep learning and coach them along.
Come on, an STi against a Ford GT? There are drivers a dime a dozen out there that can drive a supercar poorly. Your post and video seem to shout, "Look, our STi is faster than a Ford GT!" when, in fact, neither car is being driven at the limit. I mean, a normally aspirated BMW with less than half the HP was significantly faster than both cars.
I'm not trying to detract from anyone's ability here or to take anything away from the obvious fun you had at the event. That's what it's all about, right? Learning to drive and having fun. It's just the "Look what we did and here's the proof, top that!" kind of attitude is out of context in this forum.
If you're using these types of events as a marketing tool for the company (which is very effective and exciting), you have to give yourself time to accomplish something significant to bring to your prospective buyers. For this event, just saying that the car ran great all day at elevation in high temps without a hiccup to 3rd place would have been a great endorsement for your product. Trying to generate excitement by highlighting that you were mixing it up with a poorly driven Ford GT falls short of the mark.

Hi Gary,
Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinions, as you so clearly have quite a few. And before you or anyone starts reading in-between the lines, no thats not a jabyou just seem to have quite a few points you want to get across. Cool!
As for celebrating the spirit of driving, arent we doing that by sharing fun vids at the track? I mean we are not talking F1 here. We are talking about people with normal jobs and normal lives that are out having a good time. It has nothing to do with ability and everything to do withFUN.
But if you want to get a little more serious, then maybe you could take one of our cars for a spin around a track? We will be at Button Willow this coming weekend. Come on by :) Anyway, I think it would be cool for everyone to see what a professional driver could do behind the wheel of one of our cars. What do you think?

My point exactly. The whole original post was how the STi suprised everyone and kept up with a Ford GT. When, in fact, even with the similar specs, the Ford GT would be significantly faster around the track agains the STi with an experienced driver at the wheel of each. The STi is no match for the Ford GT. Even at an elevation of 4,000 feet, which robs the GT of about 20% power, the GT would still be faster.
I wonder if the driver of the BMW driver is bragging about how he whipped a 500+ horsepower Ford GT and 500+ horsepower STi...

With speeds in excess of 145 mph, Dr. Warr pushed his Crawford Performance 2004 STi to a new Subaru track record. The Ford GT did not give up easily and later that day managed to pull in a 3:20.014, nudging past the Subaru.

Hi Gary,
As for celebrating the spirit of driving, arent we doing that by sharing fun vids at the track?
I didn't see it that way. I saw it as finding a way of getting video of you passing the Ford GT in there. That obviously wasn't Russ fastest lap or an example of his best driving, but it sure did have the GT in there.
I mean we are not talking F1 here. We are talking about people with normal jobs and normal lives that are out having a good time. It has nothing to do with ability and everything to do withFUN.
Right, which is why the whole write-up about the battle with a Ford GT just seems to have a marketing ploy on it. As well as asking for proof when an industry competitor shows up. Why so much emphasis to defend laptimes and look for proof from a competitor when it's all about fun?
But if you want to get a little more serious, then maybe you could take one of our cars for a spin around a track? We will be at Button Willow this coming weekend. Come on by :) Anyway, I think it would be cool for everyone to see what a professional driver could do behind the wheel of one of our cars. What do you think?
Well, that wouldn't be about ME getting more serious, it would be about YOU getting more serious. If you really want to showcase what Crawford/I-Speed is all about, I think that's the direction you have to take. Whether it's me or any other qualified racer driving the car, showing what the car is capable of in outright speed on a known track would be heading in the right direction for promoting the business.
I'm traveling on business during the June 10-11th weekend. But it may be worth it to get a really good driver in the car and see what kind of laptimes your car turns. Then, compare it to times of other qualified drivers and you may have something to really show off!
Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinions, as you so clearly have quite a few.
Ha! Yes, I really do. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth my time. But I really don't want to see the Motorsports forum turn into some of the pissing matches I've seen in Proven Power Bragging.
MPME -
Point taken.
FWIW: Its always good to put up information with your questions so that everyone is on the same page. It's also no secret people like to rake other people over the coals the moment factual data is NOT posted. Even then, with data to back up claims they scream of foul play.
Sorry Chris--I still completely disagree--if you feel the need to post all kinds of data for whatever reason, that's your call. Nobody else does because again, that's not the tone or timbre of this particular forum.
Do whatever you want, obviously, but don't be suprised when others don't post anything because as we saw with Cobb, no one doubted him.
This forum isn't used for much sales or bragging, so tons of supporting documentation to 'defend' yourself isn't expected.

That's not what Gary was saying. Russ is a good driver, and we all know this, but Gary, and Russ even confirmed, he was unfamiliar with the course and the setup on the car, thus leaving margin on the table.
This was a "fun run" event.

Needs elevation change. But any track with lap times over 3min has gotta be pretty damn cool!

I bet GT sales are plummetting already now that these specs and the video have hit the street. And probably Z06 sales, too, since a couple of tests I've seen have the GT slightly faster than the Z06 around a road course. But if the Crawford STi > Ford GT, and Ford GT > Z06, then Crawford STi > *!!!

Thanks for not grilling me guys....I am just out there to have fun..... with the length of the track and the number of turns it is quite a tricky lady to tame.... There was probably at least a couple of seconds left in the car as it was set up due to not being that familiar with the track....... who knows if I would have run the last 2 sessions on Sunday maybe I could have gone sub 20's....... thats why I would love to go back!!!!!! :D

Also my friend Gary was in the GT and was with a passanger when he pointed me by. He is a good predictable driver...... I do not think he will ever drive the car at 10/10's due to the car itself.......his viper has gone off track many a time...
With a set of 3 way KW's and proper allignment the GT would be a rocket....
Se ya at the track!!!!
Russ
P.S. Jamie / Marshall thanks for the bump!!!!
