Subaru floormats = big problems!! part 1

AWD>FWD 05-24-2006 10:15 PM

Subaru floormats = big problems!!
Today I am driving in downtown Woodinville. I had just pulled out of a parking lot and was slowly rolling down the street in 1st in the rain. I hit the gas to get up to the speed limit, shifted at 5,000 RPM's out of first, pushed in the clutch and to my dismay my car hit the revv limiter with my foot off the throttle. I threw the shift lever in the neutral position and tried to figure it out for about half a second before I cracked the key off. I turned the key to the on position to regain steering control and I pull to the side of the road. I sit there and think for a second. I have been running stage 2 since Saturday and thought maybe there was a problem with my ECU. I try to start the motor and it just cranks and cranks and cranks, but will not start. So I get out of my car and call the Smart Service employee that helped me with my Stage 2 to see if he could think of it. At this point I am pacing on the sidewalk a few feet from my car. I sit back in my car kind of hard (I'm a little angry now) and hear a THWACK! from under my dashboard and go OHHHHH the throttle pedal stuck!

The Subaru floormat had slid forward on top of the throttle! I knew that sometimes it slides down there and holds the clutch pedal down when I go to start the car.

I think that these things are a real safety hazard, think of if I had put my car in 2nd can hit a person or another car? Bad ju ju.

The floormat I am talking about are the $60 all weather floormats that were the only option on my car when I bought it.

I want to complain to Subaru. Looking closer at the floormat, there is not much to hold it in place, most aftermarket cheapies are designed better. I was mad, now am venting.
ExpO 05-24-2006 10:17 PM

Same issue here... I've just made it a habit to check it right before putting the seatbelt on.
LibertyEJ22T 05-24-2006 10:19 PM

any chance the rubber mats were put on top of your regular mats? most dealers tend to do this causing this hazard. I believe factory mats should be removed prior to putting the all weather mats in, gives that little extra clearance. at least that's what i heard from customer service
AWD>FWD 05-24-2006 10:22 PM

That's probably the problem. For a while I had the rubbers on the ground and the carpeted ones in the trunk, and when I went to the dealer for an oil change for some reason they put the carpeted ones back under the rubber ones?
eddie1982 05-24-2006 10:31 PM

I took my floormats up a long time ago and went rubber. The problem is the teeth want dig into the carpet, because there really isn't any carpet.
VTSubieRS 05-24-2006 10:36 PM

same issues here. gotta just check em periodically.
kcook 05-24-2006 10:59 PM

my floor mats are like velcrow(sp) ... they dont move at all
greg donovan 05-24-2006 11:03 PM

or you could just not bother with floormats all together.
darknightohio 05-24-2006 11:07 PM

The rubber floormats must be put over the carpet floormats in order to stay put. I have never had a problem with mine....strange.
Crashteam 05-24-2006 11:08 PM

switch the passenger side with the drivers side, It fits fine and gets stuck 0% of the time...
Tim-H 05-24-2006 11:10 PM

que? my floormat has a little clip that holds it in place preventing that from happening. If the rubber ones grip the carpet ones shouldn't the clip hold it in place? I don't have rubber ones and don't have the urge to get any. If you don't have this feature in your WRX i'd suggest installing one.
Chris Turner 05-24-2006 11:11 PM

I had the same problem with my WRX rubber floormats. My solution was to make the rubber ones hook on like the carpeted ones. I drilled a small hole in the driver's side rubber mat near the little hook on the floor. Then a short length of thin wire looped a few times to connect the two, and my rubber mats now stay in place just like the carpeted summer mats.
gslben 05-24-2006 11:27 PM

I used 2 zip ties to hook it to the little anchor on the floor. Use black ones and you don't even notice it.
ninethreeeleven 05-25-2006 12:15 AM

I have the exact opposite problem. My floormats move forward and when I hit the brakes my foot gets stuck (at the heel) and I SLAM on the brakes. Pain in the butt when coming to a rest stop off the thruway. Going 80 down to 30 sucks when all I really wanted to go down to was 50.
vorpalbunny 05-25-2006 12:28 AM

Sheet metal screws work great holding those pesky mats in place!
AWD>FWD 05-25-2006 02:05 AM

Hmm.
I like the idea of modifying the floormat to use the supplied hook. Maybe I'll try that. This just made me very nervous, knowing what could have happened, it could have turned out a lot worse if someone did not know much about their car or if it was a 4EAT and moving into neutral takes a little more thought than for a 5 speed driver.
meebs 05-25-2006 02:13 AM
my floor mats are like velcrow(sp) ... they dont move at all
+1

only had that problem once... make sure the button is snapped toward the seat.
WRXDriftR 05-25-2006 02:16 AM

THose things SUCK. The part where i rest my right foot on the floormat wore thru within 1 year. Its so bad the plastic split along the edges where it makes the ridges up and down.
john_tran 05-25-2006 02:20 AM

Yea... I have the rubber floor mats too. It holds my clutch there at times. I think some strong velcro would do the job on keeping it in place though.
Picard 05-25-2006 02:22 AM

You'd think that Subaru would design the rubber mats to stay in place with the same attachments that the carpet mats do.

I was worried about that so I bought mats from Huskey Liners for the front. They're nice because they cover a large area with a deep lip and they don't move around at all. They fit perfectly.
02redwagone 05-25-2006 02:33 AM

My rubber mats stay firmly locked in place when the carpet mats are under them. If not they slide like a mofo.
STi-JDM 05-25-2006 02:35 AM
Same issue here... I've just made it a habit to check it right before putting the seatbelt on.
+1000.... I always checked my rubber mats before I start driving...
Diabolical1 CC 05-25-2006 03:49 AM

My FLoormats have broken the retaining clip and slid all over the place everytime I get in or out.

Thinking of replacing them with the cheap ones from the local tire and car parts place.

(Canadian Tire if you must know)
Spenk 05-25-2006 06:24 AM

I have the WeatherTech rubber mats -- they stay put, but I had to trim the mat so it wouldn't interfere with the gas pedal.
EDM 05-25-2006 06:56 AM

I have the rubber mats in without the carpeted ones and they stay put no problem.
daWagon 05-25-2006 07:13 AM

Hum - mine keeps working it's way up towards the pedals even when I use the clip . . . it just pops off. So I put a paper clip on or something (can't actualy remember) to hold it in place. I took it to a shop recently and when I got my car back the clip had popped out of the carpet. The whole thing, along with the restrainer thing that's supposed to hold it in. My carpet seems to be getting streached out :furious:

I guess Top Speed had more fun driving my car than I do  . . . j/k

So I need to figure out a better way to hold it in, since the clip thing only seems to delay the end result.
earshot 01-11-2007 04:43 PM

That just happened to me on the highway. It took me about 2 seconds(felt like 5 minutes) to figure it out. My floormat grabs the clutch pedal too, I remembered that right before I was going to turn the key.

Kind of sucks having your foot in on the clutch and the other foot on the brake but looking at the tach seeing it peg it self. It was a disorientating experience for about a second. I can see how something bad could have happened. Makes me wonder why the rubber mats don't have holes in them for the hooks like the carpeted ones do.

Guess I'll just poke a hole in it and use a wire tie or something.
danoodle 01-11-2007 07:09 PM

i used to have the same problem with my floormats. they would slide forward and stick to the clutch pedal when shifting.
i ended up getting some 06 STI floormats for 40 bucks and the problem is solved (there is a bracket attached to them that bolts into the floor)
badtaste 01-11-2007 07:11 PM

hell mazda is actually recalling their floor mats for the same reason
wrxsnowstyle 01-11-2007 07:32 PM

subaru has been ****ing up the floormats and the paint for a very long time now it seems...i found that the industrial velcro/ glue strips plant the mats down pretty well. audio places use the stuff to put subs and dvd players on the ground without bolting them in.
Wiscon_Mark 01-11-2007 07:37 PM

My floormats stay fine without a stay clip.

Question of curiosity - what's the bottom of your stock floormats like? Mine have those nice rubber spikes all over the bottom...they don't go anywhere.
Mavrik 01-11-2007 07:42 PM

you no longer have the floor hooks?
wrxtotoro 01-11-2007 07:53 PM

Same problem in my cheap-ass Walmart rubber mat on top of the OEM carpet mat. The spikes on the bottom of the rubber mat is just not long enough to keep it from sliding around. I ended up using two binder clips to FIX them in place.
02redwagone 01-11-2007 08:18 PM

After the second winter of the Subaru mats being overwhelmed by snow and ice I'm going with the Husky floor liners ASAP. The Subaru mats are fine for the summer and half the winter but the tracked in snow exceeds capacity quite quickly.

CN: Husky Liners FTW

I don't know what his are like but mine have the spikes--damn things slide all over the place.
you no longer have the floor hooks?
I have a 95, they didn't put the floor hooks in yet.
dwmoss_68 01-12-2007 11:24 AM

My rubber mats (installed over the carpeted mats) slide somewhat, I wish my rubber mats had the hole in them to keep them in place.

My current problem is that my driver side mat is cracked in the deep grooves. They won't retain any water. I need to replace it, but dont' feel like buying a whole new set for 1 mat.

:) --- Free Advertisement --- :)

For the new 2007 floor mat set, the style for the drive side is bigger and has the hole in place for the hook to go on.
I will dare to say that it fits several previous model years.

I hope this help.
tylerzero 01-12-2007 01:50 PM

I think the OEM rubber floormats are pieces of crap. The coverage area of the rear ones are a joke. I can't wait to switch mine out for a set of WeatherTech mats.
GooseMan 01-12-2007 02:11 PM

I have the OEM ones too...dealer threw em in when I got my car. They seemed kinda cool at first....but theyre way too hard and feel like theyre made of cheap plastic instead of rubber. Plus theyre a bit small...dont really do their job well.

Theres a GREAT set of floormats at Costco my g/f bought for her car....4 mats for $35 from Michelin...I gotta say, they seem like the best universal floor mats I've ever seen! Probably gonna go pick up a set of those soon.

I think this is it:

Lloyd RUBBERTITE Mats FTMFW

I love them, after going through two sets of Rubbermaid mats from Target and one set from Costco which was way too thick for me.

good match for the pedals i must say

this is exactly right... its a safety hazard if you have both the regular floor mats AND all weather mats on.. you should only have one or the other
j0nathanl3e 01-13-2007 03:36 AM

all you have to do is poke a hole in your floormat, the corner closest to your seat. then ziptie it to the base of your seat. then it wont go further up if you brake or anything. i have sti floormats that i've ziptied to the base of my seat and havent had a problem since.
lasko 01-13-2007 05:06 AM

No recall? Safety issue! You would think Subaru would want to keep as many customers safe as possible. So we would buy more cars from them:confused: My mats slip a lot I have to check them regularly. I will look into the new ones with the holes for the hooks.:disco:
The floormat I am talking about are the $60 all weather floormats that were the only option on my car when I bought it.
You people are crazy.

I LOVE my all weather mats. They are easy to clean, they keep my pedals from getting slippery when it is raining, and they look great! I was so excited when I found out that they made nice beefy all weather mats for the WRX!

I have never had a single problem with them interfering with the pedal actuation. On my 02 there is a small hole at the bottom left of both the all weather mat, and the stock mat. This hole fits over a peg on the floor board of my car just infront of the driver seat. The peg holds the mat in place and keeps it from sliding forward.

+10 for all weather mats.
wrxburton 01-13-2007 03:28 PM

I have had the same problem with my fabric mats.

Mine too, i have to peel them off the floor when i clean my car.
anthonywpg 06-05-2007 09:16 PM

I bought the Legacy mats for my Impreza. They fit even better and have a hole to put the hook in.
cloudvii 06-05-2007 09:20 PM

+1 for Weathermats FTW! Easy to clean and I place them right on top of my floormats. Got the weathermats included with the purchase.
imprezaowner27 06-06-2007 01:24 AM

I have the mats that came wiht my car....its never even moved.....i lifted it up once to see if i dropped change under there, and the carpet underneath was BRAND NEW, and you could trace the dirt around the mat
SubruWrX 06-06-2007 01:38 AM

which means that the matt has been protecting and shielding the floor beneath it from the common wear that peoples feet would have on the carpeting!! thats a genious design!! thumbs up subaru
jabba827 06-06-2007 01:40 AM

weathertech mats ftw!!! been using them for a couple months now. a little pricey, but well worth every penny. they're custom fit for whatever year your wrx is....
bluemax189 06-06-2007 05:22 AM

OP is stupid, use the new hooks on our 06/07's to hook on the mats. if you cant figure that out you shouldnt be living.

ding ding ding.... make sure the rubber floor mats aren't on the carpeted floor mats!

Although this is an old thread.
I would not call the OP (AWD>FWD) stupid.
The OP has the MY06 and already came with the old design all weather floor mats.
The '07 all weather floor mats are the ones with the new design.
It would seem that someone else needs to figure things out before posting.

What I did was buy the '07 mats and placed the new '06 mats in my wife's MY04 Forester and they fix like a charm. ;)
JeffrWRX 06-06-2007 03:47 PM

Anyone have a pic of the new design?

My OEM 02 Floormat always slids forward, and pulls the hook out of the carpet. Its useless.

joecerv 06-06-2007 04:16 PM

Check here for the new design:

I had the same issue until I replaced them with some aftermarket turds then put the fact ones in the closet for future sale of the car
