AWD 25hr Racecar that Starts with the Letter "S" part 2
So....where was the car?
It didn't even run?

No, it didn't even run. We had several unfortunate incidents with critical parts getting lost in transportation as well as parts lost in shipping. Sourcing new parts for such a new car turned out to be more challenging than anticipated. We just ran out of time.

Things finally came together very late in the game and we finally got the engine fired up. However, the fly-by-wire throttle wasn't working. Hours and hours of troubleshooting didn't reveal the culprit. Signals were not being sent from the ECU to the throttlebody, even with different ECU's.

The ECU uses CAN bus, K-link and analog signals, all mixed in. The ECU also has an immobilizer capability. We are thinking that when the car was originally gutted, a system was removed that somehow effected the ECU functionality, even though none of the systems that were removed were critical to racing (stuff like window lifts, stereo, door locks, HVAC). We still have all of the harnesses and motors and sensors, but not enough time to throw all that crap back into the car to continue troubleshooting.

I've got to say that the turbo kit that Cobb Tuning fabricated is absolutely gorgeous! There isn't much room in the engine compartment and they did a fantastic job with the exhaust manifold, turbo placement and intercooler piping. I'll get some photos up soon.

The car's racing career is just starting, so this is just the opening chapter, not the end of the book. Everyting will get sorted out and this cool little car will get out on the track shortly. We'll keep you posted.

that sux...it could be the immobilizer...need the factory ignition switch w/ key (and wiring) to fire it up...

Wasn't the car being converted to two wheel drive at some point?
Maybe something to do with that?

Sorry to hear about the troubles.
GarySheehan 12-04-2006 02:03 PM

Factory ignition was still in the car, and the car would start.

The car was converted to FWD for the 25 Hour, because the AWD system hasn't been field tested in racing conditions yet. It could be somehow linked to the ECU issue if there was a connector to the rear diff. I can't recall.

We'll figure it out now that we've got the time to do so.

Everyone involved was very disappointed. We learned a lot, though, and will move forward from here.

Gary,

That's too bad. I know how frustrating it can be when the shipping company looses parts just before a race and its impossible to replace those items.

In any event the Hydra EMS we use has CAN bus capability now along with DBW as this is what we use on the STI. The immobilizer system is a non-issue when the OEM computer is removed. I'm sure if you wanted to get rid of the OEM ecu we could help you guys out with an affordable stand-alone. Also the AIM Sports data-logging system and dash is about ready for the Hydra EMS which I know is very important for professional racing.

Thanks,
Phil

Hey Gary,

Howz it going. Saw you guys run at Long Beach in the SpeedGT and didn't see you at Laguna Seca at the finishing race. Also realized that you didn't run any other SpeedGT races either. Whats going on with you guys being in this series. Any news on an appearance in the 07 season..would love to see the car compete in the GT championship.
