Back to Africa! Safari rally...Talk about it here part 1

mordy_2v 07-10-2002 06:39 PM

Back to Africa! Safari rally.

Big questions:

Will Tommi finish the race this time?

Will Solberg manage to not take a major spin in the first or second legs?

Or will it be a boring Pug vs Pug vs maybe a Ford battle?

final question: will i stay sober for once this weekend and actually watch the coverage? :p (probly not)

I think the pugs are going to die hahah

Have you seen what the roads look like after the rains???? Those little Pugs are going to be stuck in the mud! I think Skoda, Subaru and Ford will do good. Its anybodys race but I think Subaru might win. They have alot of power and like mud events
Subie Gal 07-10-2002 09:39 PM

not sure the pugs are solid enough but...
we'll soon see... they have improved the car very much this year...

and burns has fared well there in the past...

as always keep ya eye on carlos and colin....
too much experience there to just cast em off...

tommi...
who knows... i'm hoping he will be successful!!!
come on!!

and Petter! wow...
let's go baby! he's definately going to be world
champ sometime in the next 5 years....

time to get a win under his belt me thinks!!! :)

Solberg's Safari

This would be a great time for Solberg to take that top spot on the podium!!!
Go Petter!
YoungWilliams 07-11-2002 02:25 AM

Argh!!! My buddy with speed is on his honeymoon this weekend!! Stupid cable company not carrying Speed in my area!!! Grrrr......

Must find a way!

I feel like Petter's due, and Tommi will actually finish this race....around 5th or 6th.

Hungtodafloor 07-11-2002 02:55 AM

i have noticed that there were some fricken cattle in the way and the cars like slowed not to hit them. hell, they should give the teams points for hittin' those bastards!

P.S. i saw this on the commercial 10 seconds ago. SWEET!
WHTWRX 07-11-2002 11:22 AM

Got my VCR set in cash the mellon forgets. Looking forwards to seeing RIM tonight!

It's nice being on the west coast, I get to see all this stuff before bedtime!

If it rains, I'll be putting my bets on Subaru. If I were putting money down right now it'd be on Gronholm. Those little silver bullets just seem to take anything on.
TimStevens 07-11-2002 11:26 AM

No way Tommi's going to make it through this one. He can't make it through a normal rally, how the heck is he going to get through the frickin' Safari?

I think Petter will do well, but I don't think he'll win. Colin or Burnsie on top, and a Skoda somewhere in the top six :)

cyRally 07-11-2002 02:14 PM

Safari is a complete lottery. Anything can happen.

I predict the Pugs will bite it.
Tommi will finish but not win.
The Fords will be in the points.
Petter will win.
Look for a Skoda to steal some points from the big boys.
MulletSlayer 07-11-2002 03:39 PM

I Hope the Pugs don't make it. I would like to see a podium with no pug drivers on it.

I would like to see Colin, Tommi, Petter or Carlos win.
AndyRoo 07-11-2002 03:46 PM

I dont think the Pugs can take the conditions, even super cocky Gronholm was saying it wouldnt be an easy one.

My bet is Tommi or Colin.

I want Juha Kankkunen to win and if his car doesnt break like always, i'm thinkin top 5.

Skoda will do alright, they got 3rd here last year. What driver was it though?
Jewbaru 07-11-2002 04:18 PM

Armin Schwarz got 3rd for Skoda last year.
trinidriver 07-11-2002 06:45 PM

The stars are aligned, Tommi will win! *please* There's so much support for Petter here (rightly so) but Tommi should still be our number 1 dude.
jmullan 07-11-2002 07:00 PM

Petter is just hotter than Tommi. Wait a minute, what did I just say?

Perhaps Tommi just smells too much like Mitsubishi and Marlboro still.
FlooredSubaru 07-11-2002 08:10 PM

Petter is due but it wont be this one.

Ford is going to be on the top spot.

Hopefully Tommi will finish other wise Petter and Tommi need to change spots on the team

Erik S.
FLaBrit 07-11-2002 10:44 PM

Everyone will be eating Colin McRae's dust...until he crashes. Tommi wins.;)
Coati 07-11-2002 11:30 PM

Separated at birth?

Anyone else notice that Phil Mills looks like Wallace from Wallace & Grommit?
Coati 07-12-2002 02:30 AM

Petter's curse

Lost over 10 min with clutch problems:confused:

But Tommi's flying. What a bittersweet way for Subaru to begin the rally.
WRXMaster 07-12-2002 02:49 AM

Yea but two PUGS are dead  hahah marcus
RollingRex 07-12-2002 07:46 AM

Not bad so far, Tommi still leading - in fact just increased his gap to Colin in 2nd place by 1min 38 sec on stage three...
Too bad Petter had a problem, othere wise he could be up there with Tommi.

cyRally 07-12-2002 09:28 AM

Petter has the worst luck!

And the pugs are biting it big time..haha. A welcome change.

And Gromit's even reading pace notes.

Anyway, I do hope that Subaru does finish within the top three. It'd be a good confidence booster for all team members.
trinidriver 07-12-2002 10:05 AM
Petter Solberg (Subaru), 14th, +13m32.8s: At the midpoint split Solberg was six seconds up. But after that he got caught in Markko Martin's dust, had to ease off and lost 30 seconds. He said: "Markko didn't want to move over. The helicopter asked him five or seven times but he didn't move over for us."
What's up with Martin?
cyRally 07-12-2002 10:10 AM

Petter is out apparently...

Any of you guys listen to WRC radio on the WRC.com site?

Its pretty good..they play music and then come on and talk abou the latest updates. Good info.
trinidriver 07-12-2002 10:10 AM

On the other hand...
Tommi Makinen (Subaru), rally leader, 1h58m52.4s: "I caught Richard for about 5km but I am very grateful to Richard for pulling over as soon as he did. I backed off at the end of the stage where it was really rough." Makinen also reported having a small problem with dust coming into the car.
jaybird 07-12-2002 10:15 AM

Makkinen leads at the end of day 1. He is 16 seconds ahead of McRae who made up over two minutes on the final stage of the day. Solberg is out , I think he had major turbo failure and a fried clutch. Conditions are super bad and some of the drivers are really whining about it. There have allready been 15 retirements out of 48 cars. This Rally radio rules!
Idjiit 07-12-2002 11:13 AM

Wooooo! All I can say is: This is why I love Rally. Keep Safari in the series, please!

Whatta roller coaster... I was waiting for news to hear that Makinen had picked up a puncture or something, but it sounds like McRae just turned it on and kicked ass on SS4. Rock on! Can't wait for the coverage tonight on Speed...

In a totally unrelated note, Colin was in my dreams last night. He was hanging out at a BBQ, and we went to Circuit City or something to buy a PS2 and Colin McRae 3. Heh. My fiancee just kinda rolled her eyes when I told her in the shower this morning.
Jewbaru 07-12-2002 11:38 AM

I had a dream Marcus Gronholm retired. :D
Rodan 07-12-2002 12:04 PM

I agree that WRC radio is sweet.
Bugsie1 07-12-2002 12:57 PM

You guys should definitely use wrc.com, my friend is out in Kenya right now trying to keep the website up to date as the results come in. It's a very detailed real-time system.

Yah, exactly! Are there any WRC rules on passing? I wonder if Petter and Markko got along when they were teammates...
AndyRoo 07-12-2002 01:59 PM

Martin

Martin apparently can't take the whole adventure and even though hes in a sold sixth place, he has to cry and whine, "I want to go home." What a pansy.

Even though Kankkunen is something like half an hour back in 11th, I predict a top 5 finish.

And what about those Citroens!? They were flying! I see good things coming from them in the next few years.
driggity 07-12-2002 02:02 PM

Anyone know what happend to Makinen on stage 4? Or was Colin just driving out of his mind?
Subie Gal 07-12-2002 02:04 PM

GO TOMMI GOOOOO!!!!

:( too bad bout Petter tho... :(
damn the luck...

Jamie
www.subiegalracing.com
AndyRoo 07-12-2002 02:04 PM

I htink he said he was just driving too carefully or something to that effect.
FlooredSubaru 07-12-2002 02:29 PM

Well its good tommi isn't over driving the car. We need him to finish.

I bet if Tommi leads into the final day we will see a huge break out of colins car as he rolls it or hits a zebra or something.

Darn Petter's luck, if he gets better luck that would help.

Erik S>
Idjiit 07-12-2002 03:41 PM

Okay, I was leaning towards Mr. Felstead's opinion that Subaru is screwing up and not treating Petter (and his car) as they should, but this pretty much confirms it in my opinion.

I would imagine Petter is getting pretty fed up by now.

Go Tommi!
AndyRoo 07-12-2002 04:17 PM

Did anyone see the movie on the wrc.com website, with Panizzi coming close to hitting a local van?

Absolutely ilarious, but i kinda like Panizzi, and an accident like that would be terrible.

Idjiit 07-12-2002 04:28 PM

More importantly, did anyone see the "Colin Takes a Shortcut" clip? Doesn't that smack of cheating?
Ryan Smith 07-12-2002 04:38 PM

would love to see Tommi at least finish, if not win.

still can't get over that rollover crash at Rally Argentina. hard to believe he walked away from that one.
MstrDC 07-12-2002 10:35 PM

I think Markko is still a little bitter. He complained all the time how Subaru would let Solberg drive but not him. So maybe he's still a little bitter about that whole situation? Who knows!

I wonder though if the comment about wanting to go was sarcastic. He's just joking around cause of the bad day he has had? It's probably something I would say.
bliu 07-12-2002 11:25 PM

who's the stinkin' voiceover dude on speed now?!

(i've missed the last couple rallies on speed, so perhaps he's not new, and perhaps everybody's already complained about him, so sorry if that's the case)

bleh.

and wow, lots of rocks.
mordy_2v 07-13-2002 12:05 AM

Rule number 1, understand what your co-driver is saying :D

Yah, Colin's detour was pretty funny but if you looked closely there were already tire tracks there, and its not uncommon in the safari to 'straiten out the road' on the flat sections.
trinidriver 07-13-2002 12:18 AM

Don't ya hate when SpeedVison shows the same in-car clips over and over, and expects you to think it's different stages?
WRXMaster 07-13-2002 12:51 AM

 DITO!
Kilika2k 07-13-2002 01:04 AM

Crap! Tommi busted a shock! Please oh god no!!!
Berns 07-13-2002 01:23 AM

Tommy has bad luck too  Broken shock absorber causing him to lose 1st place and now down to 6th... I'm not sure who's got the worst luck... Petter or Tommi? Anyone's thoughts?

i second that! anyways so far this has been an exciting rally... makinen sure is having some luck! but solberg is another story. too bad i don't have speedvision... oh wells WRC rally radio is fine for now... *update* makinen w/ shock problems... argh! just visit WRC.com for more details!

luckily it's not as big as they first announced on rally radio... it was something like gear problems... whew! anyways hopefully makinen and solberg can run for a come back! subaru needs all the points it can get!

Tommi is buring up this stage!!!!!!!!! Hes trying to make up that time he lost. He is really taking some chances going that fast:eek:
Prestige Motorsports 07-13-2002 08:46 AM

Rally-live is reporting Tommi is out 30 Km into stage 7.... NOOOOOOOOO.....Man that sux....
BSLICKOH 07-13-2002 01:48 PM

I got a Yahoo! news alert that Tommi is out (broken strut or something), and that McRae is well on his way to the win.
WRXMaster 07-13-2002 02:29 PM

Burns Pug died hahahahah. His suspension broke and he tried to drive it to service but got stuck in a hole.
Rin 07-14-2002 12:36 AM

As much as I like wrc.com's rally radio webcast, why are they so fond of the statement (or a slight variation on) "The Safari has very long, very sharp teeth! This rally bites!" ???
Lifino 07-14-2002 09:44 AM

I wouldn't get my hopes up for McRae... He's still got three more chances to over extend himself in the attempt for a finish + flourish. In other words he's got another three opportunities to roll the car, today.
dwx 07-14-2002 10:29 AM

McRae with the win. When Panizzi is winning stages at the Safari rally you know the attrition rate has been pretty high. I have always been a big McRae fan though, no matter what he drives. I'm not sure how much longer we'll see the Safari on the circuit.
ShockWave 07-14-2002 11:03 AM

12 out of 48 finished. But most importantly, I think we should all take a moment to congratulate Kailesh Chauhan coming in 12th in a Forester!

A Forester! In WRC! What a concept!
